Fanfic / Ruby Rose of Class 1-A

Go To

Since she was a child, Ruby Rose had always dreamed of being a hero. And after getting into U.A.'s famed hero course, she finally is on the path to achieving her dream. Making friends among her class, schoolwork and hero training should've been the only things she had to worry about. But the shadow hovering over U.A. seems to think otherwise.

Ruby Rose of Class 1-A is the first story in the RWBY in My Hero series, a RWBY and My Hero Academia crossover collection written by baileek313 on Archive of Our Own. The first story is complete as is its sequel A Peace Sign to the Sky. A short fic based on the events of the first movie I-Island Vacation was also published. The third story, Falling and Rising, has been published and is concluded in October 2021. The fourth volume of the story, Day by Day, originally due for release in spring 2022, was published in January 2023 and is currently in progress.

The author also has a Tumblr where she answers various questions, it can be found here, (please note that there are numerous spoilers about the story, read at your own risk!)

Ruby Rose of Class 1-A provides examples of:

    open/close all folders

    The series as a whole
  • Adaptational Badass: As a part of her preparation to get into U.A., Ruby has been trained by her sister, uncle, and father in hand-to-hand combat. As a result, she's more than capable of handling herself in a physical fight without weapons.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Weiss is much nicer to Ruby and the others compared to her canon counterpart early in the story having befriended Ruby and company prior to the first volume. She is even very protective of Ruby and is constantly looking out for her well being.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Some of the characters from RWBY have different relationships from their canon counterparts.
    • Canon Jaune and Ruby met during their initiation into Beacon Academy. Here, they're childhood friends and neighbors.
    • Weiss, Blake, and the rest of Team JNPR are also close friends with Ruby much earlier than compared to their canon counterparts.
  • Adaptational Wimp: The story takes place in the My Hero Academia world, so all the characters from RWBY lack their Aura, meaning that they aren't as durable as their original counterpart. This hits Yang especially hard, as her Quirk, like her Semblance, requires her to take damage to use it, which is far more dangerous without Aura to protect her.
  • All-Loving Hero: Deconstructed with Ruby Rose. While she has no problem fighting villains and will fiercely defend her friends, she becomes visibly uncomfortable with the idea of having to play the role of a villain in the mock battles and doesn't want to hurt her classmates. Aizawa outright states that she has a tendency to split people between friend and foe too easily and needs to see that the world is not always so black and white. This causes her to constantly hold back and hinders her training. Yang tries to snap her out of this mindset by making her go all out while training for the Sports Festival. Aizawa also seeks to break her habit by forcing her to fight Ozpin, someone she trusts wholeheartedly, during the final exams.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Ruby suspects that Mirio and Tamaki are secretly a couple, and she thinks the same with Blake and Yang. However, she also admits to herself that she is not absolutely certain if it is the case.
  • Book Dumb: Ruby is by no means stupid; however, because she has ADHD, she struggles to stay focused while studying for exams. Thus she only passes the written part of the entrance exam with the bare minimum and she places sixteenth in her class standings.
  • Death by Adaptation: While her situation in the original series is left ambiguous. Summer Rose is confirmed to be dead before the events of this story. She was killed by All for One.
  • Disabled in the Adaptation: Ruby has ADHD in this fic, which causes her to struggle with her school work. At one point Weiss even asks her if she remembered to take her medication. Bakugo also suffers from hearing loss as a side effect of using his quirk. This becomes relevant in I-Island Vacation when Midoriya communicates with All Might via sign language and explains why to Ruby. In Falling and Rising, it's revealed that Kaminari has ADHD as well.
  • Doting Parent: Taiyang in nearly every chapter he's in likes to praise his daughters and remind them of how proud he is of them.
  • Everyone's Baby Sister: Ruby is this for Yang's friend group, with all of them caring a lot about her, helping her train and study, and being protective of her.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Ruby's presence in the MHA world causes some minor changes within the original canon storyline.
    • Ruby ends up taking Aoyama's place on Shinsou's team during the cavalry battle and the tournament in the second volume. Thus, she ends up going on to eliminate Ashido in the first round of the tournament and even defeats Tokoyami in the second round, taking his place as the third-place winner of the tournament.
    • Mineta does not appear during the I-Island incident.
  • Headbutting Heroes: Aizawa and Qrow do not like each other with Qrow describing the former as "stubborn and hardheaded." Taiyang points out that Qrow isn't so different, much to Qrow's chagrin. It's so bad that Taiyang has to make Qrow leave the house when Aizawa comes over, and their first scene together results in a fight in the parking lot. Word of God states that the reason for their mutual dislike goes much deeper. It is later revealed that Aizawa blames Qrow for the death of Summer Rose and Oboro Shirakumo.
  • Healing Hands: Jaune's quirk allows him to amplify and transfer energy, which can be used to boost his or someone else's strength or stamina or can even heal injuries faster than normal. Recovery Girl has him as her assistant from time to time. Jaune uses this to heal Ruby's bruises after the USJ attack, and he later heals Uraraka, Midoriya, and Ruby after their respective fights during the Sports Festival.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Although Ruby's presence causes some minor changes within the MHA storyline, the overall story changes very little.
    • Even though Ruby is part of Iida and Bakugo's team during the mock battles, she is reluctant to attack her classmates and contributes very little to the overall battle with the exception of providing some assistance to Iida. Thus, the outcome remains the same with Midoriya and Ochako winning.
    • Despite advancing pretty far in the tournament, Ruby still loses to Bakugou in the third round of the tournament. Thus, Bakugou still goes on to win first place.
    • Even though she participates in the fight against Stain, her fighting style is ill-suited against Stain's. She ends up paralyzed during and out of the fight, and she is unable to prevent the others, especially Iida, from being severely injured during the fight.
  • Kick Chick: Rather than use a scythe, Ruby uses her Super-Speed Quirk to launch powerful kicks at her enemies. Because she relies on her Quirk to build up the necessary force, most of her attacks are kicks.
  • Power Incontinence: Ruby's control over her quirk can vary depending on her emotional state. It can spontaneously activate when she is in a panicked state, and she has a tendency to shed rose petals whenever she gets excited.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Canon Ozpin had no relation to Amber and Oscar Pine, other than Oscar being a vessel for Ozpin's soul. In A Peace Sign to the Sky, they are revealed to be his children; Amber is his stepdaughter, but whether Oscar is his biological child or adopted is never specified.
  • Running Gag: A few show up throughout the series:
    • Weiss restraining an enraged Bakugo with her glyphs becomes this.
    • Ruby refers to Bakugo as an "Angry Pomeranian" several times throughout the series.

    Ruby Rose of Class 1-A
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In the original canon, both Hitoshi Shinsou and Itsuka Kendo don't appear until the Sports Festival Arc. Here, however, Ruby encounters them both during the entrance exam. While they are not explicitly named, their descriptions make it unmistakable to their identity. The Big Three also make a minor appearance as part of Yang's class during the USJ attack.
  • Adaptation Expansion: After the battle trial class, the rest of 1-A's first day in U.A is expanded instead of being skipped since Ruby is the point of view protagonist and Izuku is out of commission for the day.
  • Animal Metaphor: Played for Laughs. Due to Bakugo's aggressive personality and blonde hair, Ruby tends to compare him to an angry Pomeranian.
  • Badass Normal: Roman Torchwick is Quirkless, which he makes up for by being a skilled enough fighter to hold his own against Ruby and Kirishima at USJ.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Yang is fiercely protective of Ruby and even offers to "take care" of Bakugo for her. Ruby, of course, declines because she doesn't want to make things worse. Played for Drama when the USJ is attacked and Yang is prevented from leaving her classroom to help her sister. She becomes increasingly panicked as she begs Ozpin to let her go with the heroes to make sure Ruby is safe.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Bakugo of all people ends up saving Ruby when Torchwick has her at his mercy and is about to strike the finishing blow on her.
  • Crash-Into Hello: In a non-romantic way, this is how Ruby first meets Bakugo and Midoriya. The former ends with Ruby nearly getting blown off the map before Weiss intervenes. The latter goes much better and they even manage to strike up a conversation about their quirks.
  • Disaster Dominoes: Similar to what happens in the original series, Ruby's first day at UA goes horribly wrong. After Yang ditches her in the courtyard, she trips and bumps into Bakugo, who then proceeds to yell at her. In her panic, she sneezes. This sets off her quirk, causing her to collide with Bakugou. Then, they both collide with Todoroki. This accidentally sets off both boy's quirks, resulting in an explosion with snow scattering all over the courtyard. Todoroki simply gets up and walks away while giving Ruby a Death Glare. Before she can apologize to Todoroki, Bakugo gets up and starts yelling at her some more. While desperately trying to apologize, she accidentally presses his Berserk Button by bringing up the "Sludge Villain Incident" and she nearly gets blown off the map by an enraged Bakugo. Fortunately for Ruby, Weiss intervenes and separates the two before it can escalate any further.
  • The Empath: Lie Ren is given the ability to sense negative emotions in addition to his usual powers. This allows him to sense how bad the USJ situation is when he sees Iida at the front gate, noting that the fact he can sense Iida's fear from their classroom shows just how strong it is.
  • Fatal Flaw: For Roman Torchwick, his pride leads to his capture during the USJ incident. As Cinder points out, he could have got away with it if he hadn't been so determined to get revenge on Ruby.
  • First-Name Basis: Ochako Uraraka is one of the few friends who actually refers to Ruby by her first name, which Ruby is cool with as she can refer to her as Ochako.
  • Heroic BSoD: Played for Laughs in one instance with Ruby. After the mock battles, Ruby unwittingly calls Ochako a friend. Ruby is suddenly so stunned by the idea that she already made a friend with someone her own age that she experiences a mental shutdown. Jirou snaps her out of it by shocking her with her earphone jacks.
  • It's All My Fault: Because Torchwick came to the USJ and went after her specifically, Ruby feels personally responsible for the villain attack on the USJ and the injuries sustained by Aizawa and Thirteen all because she chose to interfere during the robbery in the first chapter.
  • Mythology Gag: Much like in RWBY, Ruby accidentally runs into a mean classmate, sneezes, and causes an explosion on her first day. Ironically, Weiss, the mean classmate in RWBY, is instead the one to bail her out of the situation.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: In the first chapter, Ruby uses her Quirk to knock out some goons who were trying to rob a store. When two actual Pro Heroes arrive on the scene, they drag her to the police station, due to the fact that public display of one's Quirk is against the law. It's ultimately subverted, however, since Ruby used her power in self-defense, and she's free to go home.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Cinder Fall has a very low opinion of Tomura Shigaraki and believes that All for One coddles him too much.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Bakugou, Todoroki and at least a good number of Ruby's 1-A classmates note that Ruby is too idealistic for wanting a fairy-tale like happily ever after and said inspiration being the reason why she wants to become a Hero.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Roman Torchwick has no reservations about injuring, maiming, or potentially even killing Ruby simply because she wounded his pride by foiling his robbery.
  • You Remind Me of X: While Ruby is being interrogated by Glynda (who goes by the hero name of Madame North), Ozpin enters the room, and is taken aback for a moment by Ruby's appearance, mistaking her for Summer Rose. Ruby corrects him by saying she's her daughter, and Ozpin quickly apologizes, saying that she and her mother look incredibly similar.

A Peace Sign to the Sky
  • Avenging the Villain: After Torchwick is arrested and sent to prison, Neopolitan is determined to get revenge on Ruby. She eventually joins the League of Villains as a means to achieve her goal.
  • Berserk Button: Upon learning the truth about Endeavor, the very mention of his name is enough to put the normally cheerful and friendly Ruby into a foul mood. Praising or defending him will send her into a tirade. She very nearly snaps when Endeavor instructs Midoriya not to hold back against Shouto during their fight.
Izuku: "H-He's only trying to support..."
Ruby: "He's not! He just…! I mean, I don't know why he's trying to do this, but I know what he's trying to do. And it's nothing good! He's pushing him farther than he could go… Not even my dad did that to me when we were training. He always stopped when he knew I was at my limit. But… but he doesn't. He kept pushing Todoroki more than he should have, and even his mom… He pushed her over the edge. He made her snap and hurt Todoroki! I've wondered about how he got his scar before but that… I can't imagine what he did to the rest of his family…"
  • Best Served Cold: In an Omake, Tensei gets his revenge on Tenya for something that happened in his youth. When Tensei got into his food fight with Aizawa, Yamada, Kayama, and Shirakumo, Tenya ratted him out to their mother immediately. So when Tenya came home after his food fight, Tensei was waiting with a very smug grin on his face and proceeded to call their mother.
  • Broken Pedestal: Endeavor becomes this for Ruby when she accidentally eavesdrops on Todoroki's conversation with Midoriya about his family and the circumstances surrounding his scar.
  • Defrosting Ice King: Todoroki is initially aloof towards Ruby after their disastrous first meeting; however, he warms up to her after she learns his secret. Eventually, he becomes one of her closest friends and the first person to promise Ruby that if they ever decide to do something dangerous, that they won't do it alone.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Shinsou initially rebuffs Ruby's attempts at being helpful as pitying him, and he is genuinely surprised that she wants to join his team willingly.
  • Food Fight: This happens during the second chapter of the story, where various kids from class 1-A start using their Quirks to fight each other. Midnight convinces Aizawa to go easy on them by reminding him that she, Aizawa, Present Mic, Tensei Iida, and Shirakumo got into a similar situation years before.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: It's revealed in conversations that Summer Rose and All Might were good friends despite the fact that the latter was at least ten years older than the former.
  • Keeping Secrets Sucks: After Todoroki confronts Ruby for eavesdropping on his conversation with Midoriya, he makes her promise not to tell anyone. She reluctantly agrees but has a difficult time keeping her emotions in check whenever the topic comes up. It doesn't last long as she ends up blurting out in front of Midoriya after ranting about Endeavor in front of him. Later, Taiyang is also able to coax it out of her after the sports festival.
  • Leg Focus: While peeping on the girl's locker room, Minetta mentions wanting to see Ruby's "sculpted thighs and calves" among the other girls' features.
  • Must Have Caffeine: Dr. Oobleck, aka. The Doctor, regularly drinks coffee in order to fuel his Super-Speed. If he consumes too much, however, it will put a strain on his heart.
  • Noodle Incident: Jaune had apparently gotten in trouble for an unspecified incident known as the "Kid Knight thing." Not much else is known other than it's implied that Jaune used his quirk without a license.
    • Played for Drama with Blake and Yang. During their internship with Dr. Oobleck, Blake was accosted by an unknown assailant (implied to be Adam Taurus) and Yang fought back against him. The details are unknown, but Yang mentions that the fight was going poorly for them until Dr. Oobleck intervened. Blake was left traumatized by the incident and is visibly shaken when she is reminded of it.
  • Not So Stoic: When his home is attacked by an unknown villain, resulting in Amber being hospitalized and Oscar kidnapped, the normally composed Ozpin completely breaks down in front of All Might.
  • The Promise: After the fight with Stain, Ruby asks Iida, Todoroki, and Midoriya to make her a promise in that if any of them decide to do anything dangerous like that again, that they will take her with them because "Friends don't let friends do stupid things alone." They all agree.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: After defeating Stain, Dr. Oobleck tells Ruby that while she technically broke the law by fighting a villain without a license, she ultimately did the right thing by trying to save lives. He then gives her advice on knowing when it is better to fight or to go get help, and he even tells her that he hopes to work with her again in the future.
  • Repressed Memories: Heavily implied when Ruby encounters Tomura Shigaraki accosting Midoriya in the mall and she sees his eyes for the first time causing her to completely freeze up. Soon after, Midoriya asks Shigaraki about All For One, causing Ruby to pause and wonder why that name sounds so familiar. When Ruby asks Taiyang if her fight with Torchwick during the attempted robbery was the first time she ever encountered a villain, her father confirms her question; however, she isn't totally convinced.
    • In Falling and Rising, Ruby mentions that she doesn't remember much of her childhood prior to her quirk awakening. And later, All For One's sudden appearance nearly causes Ruby to have a panic attack as he experiences flashbacks.
  • Shout-Out: Todoroki, while carrying Ruby after she was paralyzed by Stain's quirk, remarks that carrying her is like holding a pair of grapes.
  • So Proud of You: Ruby is initially dejected after her loss to Bakugo, thinking she let everyone down by not winning the tournament. Taiyang reassures her that this is not the case and that he is immensely proud of her for getting as far as she did.
  • Stalker without a Crush: During her internship with Dr. Oobleck, Ruby notices that Neopolitan is shadowing her. This is because Neo is looking for revenge against Ruby.
  • Two Aliases, One Character: Ruby is well acquainted with Toshinori Yagi, but all she knows about him is that he was a friend of her mother's who also works for All Might. What she doesn't realize is that "Mr. Yagi" and All Might are the same person.
  • Wham Line: After Midoriya's fight with Todoroki, Ruby and the rest of Midoriya's friends rush to the infirmary to see if he's alright. Who she sees there leads her to say this line:
    Ruby: "Mr. Yagi?"
  • And Zoidberg: Ruby does this when unveiling her "Class 1-A Ultimate Bonding Plan."
    Ruby: "Friends. Classmates...Bakugo."
    Bakugo: "I heard that, Red!"

    I-Island Vacation
  • Adapted Out: Mineta does not appear as he does in the film, although it has very little effect on the overall story.
  • Agony of the Feet: Ruby puts her feet through a lot of abuse throughout the story. First, she has to wear heels for the reception which she hates. Later, during the villain takeover of the island, she ends up ditching the heels to fight barefooted. The only protection that she has is her friction-resistant stockings to protect her feet from her own quirk. When the whole class has their victory celebration, her feet are still sore from the night before.
  • Combat Stilettos: Subverted in Ruby's case as she ends up taking them off and opts to fight barefooted because the heels were making it hard for her to run and fight.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: In the epilogue, Ruby accidentally blurts out to her classmates that Blake may or may not have a crush on Yang. When she realizes this, she desperately tries to deny it, but she only makes things worse. She ends up fleeing the table and burying her face in the ice cooler out of sheer embarrassment.
  • Epic Fail: Kaminari tries to flirt with Yang, Weiss, and Blake at the same time, only to get rejected by all three at the same time. Ruby and Jirou are quite amused by this.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: When everyone arrives dressed up for the reception, Ruby becomes noticeably flustered by Melissa Shield's appearance. Yang playfully teases her about this. This becomes a relevant plot point in Falling and Rising when it's revealed that Ruby may be bisexual.
  • Post-Victory Collapse: After the final battle, Ruby collapses into Midoriya's arms after her quirk exhausts all of her stamina. She is so exhausted that she later passes out in Yang's arms and sleeps for a whole ten hours afterwards.
  • Put on a Bus: During their special training class, Present Mic mentions that Ozpin has taken a leave of absence from UA after the attack on his home.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: While Ruby is trying to prevent Midoriya from falling from the escaping helicopter, she can't support both their weights and starts to lose her grip. In her moment of desperation, her eyes begin to glow, indicating that her silver eyes are starting to awaken.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Kaminari is quite pleased by seeing the RWBY girls dressed up for the reception.
    Kaminari: "Whoa… Rose… You… look like a girl."
  • Worthy Opponent: During the beach party, Kirishima suggests that Bakugo respects Yang after witnessing her in action, and he even thinks that Bakugou wants to fight her. Ruby is aghast at this idea.

    Falling and Rising
  • Actor Allusion: During the villain attack on the training camp, Ruby is disturbed by how similar Dabi sounds to her uncle, Qrow. This is a reference to the fact that both characters are voiced by Jason Liebrecht.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Yang overhears Ruby, Todoroki, and Kirishima's plan to rescue Bakugo after they visit the others at the hospital. She forbids Ruby from leaving the house, and the two get into a very heated argument which results in Ruby sneaking out and shutting off her phone after Yang repeatedly messages her.
    • Qrow, and later Taiyang, is understandably pissed when he catches Ruby and friends in the Kamino Ward during the battle against All For One and finds out that they were there to rescue Bakugo.
  • Change the Uncomfortable Subject: When Kirishima asks Ruby about her hair, he lets it slip that he dyes his, leading to this exchange:
Ruby: "Wait, Kirishima, do you -?"
Kirishima: "Oh, look at that! The race is about to start, you should get to the other side of the pool—!"
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: When Ruby gets split off from her friends, she gets double-teamed by Neo and Mercury. She's barely able to get any hits in before she gets trapped by Compress.
  • Damsel in Distress: Ruby briefly gets captured by Compress's quirk, but she gets saved at the same time Tokoyami is freed.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Says this word-for-word when Ruby realizes that her room is on the second story of her house as she is trying to sneak out through her bedroom window and again when Todoroki points out that he could have just made an ice ramp for her to slide down.
  • Epic Race: Ruby finally manages to convince Iida to race her during training camp. Sadly, neither of them end up finishing the race, as Aizawa has to stop Ruby from running off a cliff.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: When Bakugo berates Ruby over her rose petals getting everywhere and making it hard to see, she gets a sudden moment of inspiration for her new super move.
  • Fright-Induced Bunkmate: The night after telling each other scary stories, Mina gets spooked by strange noises in the dorm and asks to stay in Ruby's room for the night.
  • Gayngst: While all the girls are talking about romance during the slumber party. Ruby suddenly has a revelation that she might be bisexual when she starts fantasizing about both the guys and girls of her class. This causes her to internally panic out of fear that her friends might reject her. Fortunately, they don't and are very supportive of her.
  • Gosh Dangit To Heck: In contrast to Bakugo, Ruby is incapable of cursing. This leads to an interesting exchange between the two:
Ruby: "That doesn't change the fact that you just told Kirishima to eff off."
Bakugo: "I told him to fuck off, not eff off."
    Ruby: "That's what I said."
Bakugo: "No, you didn't! What? Can't curse? It's not that hard! Just say fuck."
Ruby: "Those words do not exist in my vocabulary… and my uncle said that if I use them, my lips would fall off."
Bakugo: [There is a Beat then he starts laughing hysterically]
Ruby: "It's not funny, Bakugo, knock it off!"
  • Innocently Insensitive: During the slumber party, the group starts talking about which girls would be great boyfriends. When everyone starts praising Kendo, Mina thinks it's strange that everyone is getting "lovey-dovey" over a girl. Ruby, having just realized that she might be bisexual, then questions what's wrong with liking girls. Upon realizing what she just said, Mina instantly regrets it and profusely apologizes to Ruby.
  • Mêlée à Trois: Ruby tries to break up the fight between Midoriya and Bakugo. However, when they both tell her to stay out of it, she winds up joining in the fight.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Ruby is very excited about the Test of Courage, comparing it to going into haunted houses. Blake is also mentioned to be a fan of the horror genre, which is how Ruby acquired her taste for it.
  • Papa Wolf: Ozpin swears that if any harm has befallen on Oscar, what he will do to the villains will be less than heroic.
  • Pervert Revenge Mode: Ruby, having had enough of Mineta's antics, conspires with the girls of 1-A and 1-B to lure him into a trap and finally teach him a lesson.
  • Pool Scene: The first chapter introduces Class 1-A at their "endurance training" session at the pool.
  • Rule of Pool: Bakugou shoves Ruby into the school's pool when she teases him about the mock battles. It's also mentioned that Mirio frequently does this to Ruby whenever she hangs out with her third-year friends. Kirishima manages to tackle Bakugo into the water after his race.
  • Slumber Party: After getting their revenge on Mineta, the girls of Class 1-A and 1-B decide to have one in celebration.
  • Spit Take: Cinder practically chokes on her drink when she hears from Kurogiri how Midoriya fought Stain and won.
  • The Stinger: The story ends with Oscar, trapped and captured by the Shie Hassaikai, vowing to escape with Eri.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Qrow angrily scolds Ruby, Jaune, Todoroki, and Momo for risking their own lives coming to the Kamino Wards to rescue Bakugo.
    • Taiyang later confronts Ruby when he discovers her rose petals at the scene of the Kamino raid and reprimands her for putting herself and her friends in danger. Ruby ends up grounded for the remainder of her Summer break and is forced to do household chores as her punishment.
