Pirate Heroes is a My Hero Academia and One Piece crossover by The_Mad_Mystic on Archive of Our Own. In it, Izuku dies after successfuly saving Eri from Overhaul, only to meet a robotic entity called Jeroth, who offers to send him to the world of One Piece, along with six others, figuring that that world could use a few new heroes, and return them to their own world at the exact moment of their deaths once their journey is complete, keeping any new powers be they Devil Fruit or otherwise, upon their return. Accepting, Izuku is then sent to the East Blue, where he soon runs into Luffy during his fight with the Alvida Pirates...

Contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Badass: Nami eats the Rumble-Rumble Fruit after Enel's death.
  • Achievements in Ignorance: Zoro goes swimming at Drum Island and somehow ends up in a castle on top of a mountain.
  • Adaptation Distillation: Due to Nami eating the Rumble-Rumble Fruit and the Straw Hat Pirates taking Enel's gold ship to replace Going Merry, the G-8 Filler Arc gets skipped.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Izuku and Ochako get together some time after they join Luffy's crew.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Fujitora appears during the Alabasta Arc instead of Dressrosa like canon.
    • Donquixote Doflamingo shows up during what would have been the Davy Back Fight Arc.
  • Adaptational Karma: At the end of the Arlong Park arc, Garp confronts Nezumi with the knowledge that he's been making deals with pirates.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": Setsuna's pet T-Rex from Little Garden, Rex (affectionately Rexy).
  • Ascended Extra: Kaya ends up joining the Straw Hats, unlike canon.
  • Battle Couple: Usopp and Kaya team up to fight Mr. 3 and his wax mecha.
  • Beware the Nice Ones:
    • Izuku is usually pretty nice, and a hero down to his heart, but push his buttons, like Arlong did when he betrayed Nami, and you'll usually regret it. His moniker on his bounty is "The Eldritch" (later "Eldritch Nightmare") for a reason. Not to mention that he starts showing more and more signs of being a Blood Knight as time goes on.
    • Ochako is really sweet, kind, and passionate. If you make the mistake of thinking that makes her weak, she'll correct your assumption by throwing you around with her Gunhead Martial Arts, hitting you with her explosive hammer or straight out sending you flying with her Quirk, and like Izuku is developing a thirst for battle. She's "Valkyrie", after all.
    • Kaya is a sweet and kind young girl... whose alchemical concoctions positively terrify her (saner) crewmates.
  • Blood Knight: Izuku and Ochako just love getting in a good fight, yet they're in complete denial about it. Kirishima worries he might be becoming one too when fighting Mr. 1.
  • Brick Joke: When Izuku and Ochako finally get a Relationship Upgrade, Setsuna hopes they remember to use condoms. Luffy asks what a condom is, leaving Setsuna horrified at the idea that the One Piece world doesn't have birth control. Later after Izuku and Ochako have their first date, Nami says she made sure they had a condom to use, and explains that their world does have birth control. Luffy's just an idiot.
    Setsuna: "Yeah that tracks."
  • Brutish Character, Brutish Weapon: Ochako ends up taking a hammer (it also has a spear function, but she doesn't really use it) from Don Krieg that makes an explosion whenever it impacts a target, the strength of the explosion dependent on the strength of the impact. In the hands of Ochako, who can render its incredible mass completely weightless, thus limiting the strength of the explosion to how hard she can swing it...
  • Chekhov's Gun: When Sanji dives into the remains of Going Merry, one of the few things he manages to rescue is a tangerine. Nami takes it with her to the fight with Enel, and at the end it turns into the Rumble-Rumble Fruit.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: One of Izuku's more important duties as first mate is helping keep Luffy focused and on track.
  • Contrived Coincidence:
    • Ochako finds and eats a Devil Fruit that boosts her Gravity Master Quirk.
    • Just after she mentioned having to find the Sand-Sand Fruit after Crocodile's death, Vivi accidentally eats the thing when it shows up in her dish.
    • The sole tangerine Sanji recovers from Going Merry's remains just happens to be a perfect match to reincarnate Enel's fruit.
  • Covert Pervert: Ochako has a Nose Bleed when she considers how fun Blackwhip can be.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • Izuku accidentally kills Kuro after he uses Full Cowling 20% to make Kuro loses his footing while the pirate was using his Pussyfoot Maneuver.
    • Crocodile is killed when Vivi shoots him in the heart in revenge for everything he's done to Alabasta.
    • The Straw Hats kill Enel in retaliation for him destroying their ship, with Nami landing the killing blow.
  • Death by Irony: Kuro dies from losing his footing while using his Pussyfoot Maneuver during his fight against Izuku, as the speed he loved so much proved to be his downfall without something to keep him balanced.
  • Diabolus ex Nihilo: Discussed. When Nami sees the Arlong pirates having fun with Izuku, she realizes that Arlong is more than just the man who ruined her life but an actual person, who possibly has a family.
  • Die Laughing: When he realises Vivi shot him and the wound is lethal, Crocodile laughs and tells Vivi "Well played, princess."
  • Dies Differently In The Adaptation:
    • In canon, Going Merry dies from the collective strain of her Grand Line journey culminating in her falling apart after the escape from Enies Lobby. Here, Enel destroys her during the Skypiea arc.
    • In canon, Bellamy lost his crew when they tried going to a Sky Island. Here, Doflamingo kills them.
  • Easily-Overheard Conversation: A caravel is not exactly built for things like privacy, especially when you’re not really putting an effort into keeping things hush-hush.
Ochako: “You know, the key to being sneaky... IS TO BE QUIET!”
  • Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors:
    • Nami defeats Mr 1 with a single Thunderbolt Tempo. She attributes this to Mr 1 turning his body to steel to block it without knowing what kind of attack is coming making him more vulnerable.
    • Both Wyper and Luffy are able to counter Enel's lightning due to being metal and rubber respectively. However, Enel uses his lightning to induce magnetism in Wyper's body and tears him apart.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Izuku sobs when he learns he's been nicknamed "Eldritch Nightmare".
  • Everyone Has Standards: Sanji may be a Casanova, but one thing he doesn't do is going after women who are already in a relationship.
  • Explaining Your Powers to the Enemy: This is lampshaded a few times, particularly when Ochako fights Miss Valentine and Mr. 5, with the heroine wondering why they're explaining their Devil Fruit powers mid-fight.
  • Genius Ditz: Luffy's no genius, but he's not completely stupid. He does know how to effectively run a crew, especially when one of them gets hurt or sick, like what happens with Nami when she contracts a fever after the trip to Little Garden.
  • Gold Fever: Nami, of course. When she's told the Rumble-Rumble Fruit might be the Straw Hat Pirates' only way to commandeer Enel's ship, she hesitates if eating it is the best option. The moment Zoro says they can't take the gold they've found without the ship, Nami inhales the fruit.
  • Heel Realization: After the Arlong Pirates leave Cocoyashi, Arlong admits that they were as tyrannical as the Celestial Dragons they hated, and he resolves to try to be just a little bit better.
  • Heroic BSoD: Izuku falls into one after killing Kuro that Uraraka talks him out of after the battle against the Black Cat Pirates.
  • Horrifying the Horror: Mr. 4 and Miss Merry Christmas beg to be allowed to surrender after having to deal with Hatsume Mei's "baby testing".
  • Hypocritical Humor: When Setsuna berates Sanji for kicking her "baby T. Rex", Sanji wonders what kind of crew he's joined... only to realize that he fits in with the lot of them.
  • I'll Pretend I Didn't Hear That: When Smoker finds Nico Robin in Alubarna, he's willing to turn a blind eye on her since there's bigger stuff to deal with, as long as she's gone before he returns.
  • Identical Stranger: A vocal variation. The first time Ochako hears Zoro she thinks he sounds familiar, most likely thinking about All Might (both he and Zoro are voice by Christopher Sabat).
  • Impromptu Tracheotomy: Nami skewers Enel in the throat with her broken staff after he is stunned by contact with seastone.
  • Ironic Echo: When Garp tells Luffy the World Government wants to make him one of the Seven Warlords, Luffy refuses, but Garp refuses his refusal, much like Luffy did when Sanji refused to join the Straw Hats.
  • Irony: Luffy may be an Idiot Hero who can't tell when the World's Most Beautiful Woman has a crush on him, but even he can detect the romantic tension going on between Izuku and Ochako.
  • It Amused Me: Doflamingo brutalizes the Foxy Pirates when they make the mistake of challenging him to a Davy Back Fight. He then informs Foxy that he only did it to kill some time while waiting for the Straw Hats to show up.
  • It's Personal: Enel destroys Going Merry with the intention of making the Straw Hats conflict with him very much personal. It works... much to Enel's detriment.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Enel meets his downfall at the hands of the Straw Hats as a direct result of deliberately provoking them with the destruction of their beloved ship.
  • Malicious Misnaming: After mishearing Enel as "Anal", the entire Straw Hat crew takes to calling him just that. Enel is not amused.
  • Mirror Match: Setsuna and Buggy, who have similar abilities, face off against each other at one point. Setsuna can regenerate while Buggy can't, but she lacks both a weapon and his immunity to blades, so he narrowly has the advantage before the other otherworlders intervene. Once his weapons are gone, she easily finishes him off.
  • Mugging the Monster: Bellamy goes out of his way to be a jerk to Luffy, not realizing that he's the newest Warlord, and only escapes a beating from him, Izuku, Ochako, and Zoro (all four of whom are apparently capable of using Conqueror's Haki) because he decides to let him off easy. Later, after getting clued in on his status, once he hears that the man he stole the gold from is a friend of Luffy's, he's quick to give it back.
  • Mythology Gag: In the original group battle against Enel, Nami was the last person standing and pretended to accept his invitation. In this fanfic, Nami is the last person standing but manages to disable and kill Enel.
  • Oh, Crap!: Crocodile when Izuku figures his weakness is water.
  • Pre Ass Kicking One Liner: Chapter 30 ends with one as Ochako makes it clear the Straw Hats are out for Enel's blood after he kills Going Merry.
Ochako: We're going to put the fear of us into god.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner:
Enel: Now-now, think about it girl, are you ready to take a life?
    Nami: You know what? Yes.
  • Pulling Themselves Together: Wyper's metal body is nearly torn apart by Enel, leaving him badly disformed and unconscious. However, after waking he's able to pull his organs and limbs back to their normal position thanks to his devil fruit.
  • Putting the Band Back Together: One of Izuku's objectives is to find his friends that are spread around the One Piece world.
    • Ochako is working as a waitress in a restaurant at Shells Town, dying during the Overhaul raid.
    • Setsuna is at Orange Town, after dying during the Paranormal Liberation War.
    • Tsuyu is currently living in Fishman Island. As of Chapter 24, she's Jinbe's apprentice.
    • Eijiro is helping Doctor Kureha and Chopper on Drum Island.
    • Mei lives in Alabasta, and develops desalination machines to help the people while avoiding Crocodile's assassins.
    • The last one is currently under care of Dragon, Luffy's father and leader of the Revolutionaries.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
    • Izuku gives one to Arlong on how he and his crew have become as tyrannical as the Celestial Dragons they despise so much:
Izuku: Look at them! They’re terrified! Of YOU! You told me what the Celestial Dragons did to your people. Attacking, enslaving, humiliating them for the sake of their hate! Do you understand yet?! ARLONG?!
Arlong: No! I’m nothing like them!
Izuku: And yet you caused the same kind of pain. You forget the simple fact, no matter your species, you are alive and you feel. Did you honestly think humans were different in that regard?
    • Zoro calls Crocodile pathetic when he reveals he wants to look for Pluton.
Zoro: You gave up. You’re searching for an easy way to win, because you gave up on improving yourself. Because you’re a damn coward. That’s why you’re here at the start of the Grand Line, ain’t it? You got your ass kicked by some big name pirate and decided to attack weaker ones as a petty act of catharsis.
  • Red Baron: The Straw Hat Pirates pick up a few of these when they get their bounty posters. For example, Izuku becomes known as "The Eldritch" (later upgraded to "Eldritch Nightmare"), while Ochako goes by "Valkyrie".
  • Shout-Out: The awakening of Mister 1's fruit is a shout out to Shirou Emiya's Reality Marble.
  • Shut Up, Kirk!: Zoro's critique of Crocodile during their fight doesn't cause a breakdown, it actually reignites his pirate spirit. The Warlord decides to abandon his pursuit of Pluton and return to the seas as a pirate after he either kills or recruits the Straw Hats.
  • Sizeshifter: Setsuna's pet T-Rex from Little Garden, Rexy, can shift between full-size and small enough to be a Head Pet to her. Anyone's best guess is that he somehow ate an unknown Devil Fruit.
  • Spanner in the Works:
    • Crocodile's plans hit an unfortunate (for him) snag with the presence of Mei Hatsume, who has invented desalination machines to counter his artificial water shortage. He can't even sabotage them, because she just fixes them each time, and she keeps accidentally blowing up his assassins when he sends them to try and kill her!
    • Due to the Government offering Luffy the Warlord position left after Crocodile's death, Robin joining the Straw Hats means she's now untouchable. Sengoku is furious on realizing the mistake, whereas his old friend Garp however, finds it predictably hilarious and his own way of getting back at the Elder Stars for screwing up his own plan for getting Luffy as a Warlord.
  • Spotlight-Stealing Squad: The hero students unknowingly become this for Sanji. In canon, Sanji had plenty of opportunities to demonstrate his strength and was easily ranked as a member of the "Monster Trio". In this fic, the students are the ones who handle most of those fights, resulting in everyone thinking that Sanji is a mid-tier fighter.
  • Talk to the Fist: During their fight, Crocodile offers Luffy, Izuku, and Zoro a place in his crew. All three of them answer by attacking him - with Luffy punching him in the face.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Mr 1 awakens his Devil Fruit after Nami beats him with a single Thunderbolt Tempo because he could not accept being defeated that way. It takes the combined powers of Nami unleashing another Thunderbolt Tempo and Mei using one of her more powerful guns to beat him in Round 2.
  • Touché: When Zoro calls Crocodile's Revenge motive pathetic and claims that Crocodile is only searching for an easy way to win after getting defeated by a powerful pirate, Crocodile becomes furious at first before he recalls his defeat at Whitebeard's hands and concedes Zoro is right.
  • Tranquil Fury: The Straw Hats are clearly going through this after Enel kills Going Merry.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: When Shanks calls Buggy to get info about why Luffy accepted a position as Warlord, Alvida reacts with shock at how Buggy talks to one of the Four Emperors, whereas Mohji and Buggy don't see anything wrong with the latter speaking with his old crewmate.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Inverted. Asui Tsuyu appears on Fishman Island, and is taken in by Jinbe. The news of this event puts Arlong in such a good mood that the Cocoyashi arc is able to end with the start of a Redemption Arc for him.
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: When Ohm offers to make Izuku's death painless if he surrenders, an annoyed Izuku asks if that ever worked and is surprised when Ohm answers yes.
  • Wham Episode: Chapter 23. Ochako eats a Devil Fruit that boosts her Quirk, Vivi accidentally eats the Sand-Sand Fruit, and Garp forces Luffy to replace Crocodile as a Shichibukai.
    • Chapter 30. Enel kills Going Merry.
  • What If?: Doflamingo killing Bellamy's crew results in him joining up with Buggy.
  • What You Are in the Dark: After the explosions hit Alubarna, Nico Robin sees all the chaos they caused. She could have slipped away without being detected... but realizing how many children are now suffering, the same way she suffered when Ohara was destroyed, she decides to use her Devil Fruit powers to help the innocent people that are trapped or injured.
  • Wrong Context Magic: Devil Fruit powers and Quirks are explicitly different things here, (and if the otherworlders eat one of the former, they'll stack with the latter, as will other powers like Haki). More than one One Piece character is baffled by what Izuku and company can do while still retaining the ability to swim.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are:
    • Ochako gives Izuku a pep talk on the Going Merry after the battle against the Black Cat Pirates to reassure him that he's not as bad as he thinks he is for killing Captain Kuro:
Izuku: That doesn’t make it right.
Ochako: No, but that does mean they would have died regardless. He died in the middle of a fight, too. He was willing to kill everyone on the island. You saved them all. You’re a good person.
Izuku: I feel like a monster.
Ochako: That’s how you know you aren’t. You didn’t even intend to kill him. Sometimes… people die. Accidents, tragedies, murders. But what matters is what we do afterwards. You aren’t gonna let this stop you, and we both know it. You just have to be careful. People… are fragile. I honestly don’t know what to say, but I can at least remind you. You aren’t alone.
    • Kirishima encourages Chopper by pointing out that, even if he thinks himself a monster, it's not as bad as he thinks.
