Fanfic / Bloodedge of Fairy Tail

Go To

Bloodedge of Fairy Tail is a crossover between BlazBlue and Fairy Tail by Storm-VII that has Ragna fall into Earthland at the start of the Fairy Tail plot.

Bloodedge of Fairy Tail provides examples of:

  • Actor Allusion: Ragna notes that Laxus' voice sounds uncomfortably like his own, a nod to both being voiced by Patrick Seitz.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • Ragna and Gray meet Juvia on a job well before the Phantom Lord arc.
    • Jose appears to visit Makarov during Ragna and Mirajane's cooking competition, a full two arcs ahead of his debut in canon.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: Natsu and Happy provide more logical reasoning behind their decision to try an S-Class job with Lucy. They bring up that S-Class jobs are a universal standard, pointing out Fairy Tails S-Class members are in a league of their own, and easily agree to Lucy's condition of bailing as soon as things get too tough.
  • Amazon Chaser: Rather than being intimidated, Mirajane showing off her Satan Soul Take Over actually impresses Ragna, who starts flirting with her afterwards. After giving an account of their job together (which she used as their 'date') and his impression of it, he outright tells the others he's into that sort of thing.
  • Anchored Ship: Downplayed, but Ragna and Mirajane both state they are uninterested in pursuing a relationship with one another even after their date, citing they are both busy enough with their respective jobs.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • After Ragna killed the twelvth Blade of Gilgamesh to save Lucy and Levy, it looks like the guild is giving him the cold shoulder because of it. Natsu and Happy then reveal it's actually because his 'sweetheart' comment to Mirajane was taken as him flirting with her. Ragna's not sure whether to be relieved or disappointed.
    • Invoked by Ragna who gives an account of his 'date'/job with Mirajane involving the sheer power he sensed rolling off her Satan Soul form, and making the others think that scared him off... before slamming down his mug and giving the below declaration.
Ragna: JOKES ON ALL OF YOU! I'M INTO THAT SHIT!
  • Berserk Button: As the story goes on, being mistaken for an old man becomes an increasingly sore spot from Ragna, and the words are enough to send him into a foul mood.
  • Big Brother Mentor: The role Ragna plays towards Natsu during their job, agreeing to spar with him and during the fight with the golem, he gives him the challenge to take it down with minimal property damage to try and get him to improve. He also expresses pride when the Dragon Slayer manages to accomplish this.
  • Birds of a Feather: Ragna and Erza quickly hit it off due to both being blunt, no-nonsense individuals who are frequently tasked with reigning in their more eccentric guildmates. Notably, he's one of the few people willing to have a frank conversation with her since he's not afraid of her at all.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: Erza's assessment of the argument between Natsu and Lucy about going on jobs that will involve facing Vulcans. She tells Natsu he should value his comrades wishes more, and that not every job has to be combat oriented. Meanwhile, Lucy needs to acknowledge that not every job she takes can be easy or in her comfort zone, sooner or later she's going to have to learn to face proper combat.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Having the BlazBlue out of commission means Ragna loses access to most of his powers, is down his right eye and arm, all on top of not even having Aramasa with him any more. Nevertheless, he retains all his skills and physical strength, and delivers Curb-Stomp Battle after Curb-Stomp Battle to anyone foolish enough to underestimate him. Best showcased in his fight with Erza, where he manages to match the S-Class Wizard blow for blow even as she decides to go all out, the two wrecking the landscape around them.
  • Censored for Comedy: Non-swearing example. When Ragna tells Mirajane his actual age, the number is covered by his attack names.
  • Combat Pragmatist: The twelveth Blade of Gilgamesh is heavily implied to be this, outright stating the only reason he didn't just follow Ragna and kill him in his sleep being he has to defeat him in one-on-one combat per their organisations rules.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When the others question why Ragna keeps reading a magical theory book, he informs them that not being thorough is what results in towns being destroyed. Gray agrees, saying that reading it properly means you'll be able to destroy two towns instead. Ragna doesn't bother to correct him.
  • Cruel Mercy: Played for Laughs. After enduring the many 'old man' insults from the other participants of the manliness contest he entered with Elfman, Ragna initially decides to break the arms of his opponents in the arm-wrestling segment. Instead, he effortlessly (and even gently) pushes all his opponents hands down, taking glee at having crushed their spirits with how easily he did so.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Ragna dishes these out like candy for most of his early fights, including the Vanish Brothers and Gilgamesh XIII.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: Discussed by onlookers during Natsu's fight with Erza, with several noting this is probably the best he can hope for given the power gap and her being too pissed to hold back. Natsu manages to pull one off by catching her off guard and landing a clean hit, though is knocked out immediately after.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Several of the chapters of Ragna's Fetch Quest has him joined by a member of Fairy Tail, giving them some more Character Focus.
    • Image of Rehabilitation has him on an escort mission with Loke.
    • Image of a Sunset has Gray join him on a job to kill a monster at Port Hargeon.
    • Image of Brawniness he joins Elfman in competing in a manliness contest.
    • Image of the Guardian he is joined by Lucy and Levy on a job to bodyguard one of their previous clients.
    • Image of the Fellowship has Natsu taking him along on a job to protect several archeologists, wherein Ragna starts to pplay a mentor role to his friend.
  • Deadpan Snarker: As per usual, Ragna, which is mainly how he handles the sheer insanity that is Fairy Tail. Surprisingly, Mirajane joins in as well.
Ragna: (upon seeing Natsu's "Ragna" disguise) ...Am I allowed to be offended here, or do I have to settle for near crippling disappointment?
Mirajane: No one would blame you if you felt both, moreso surprised at the near part.
  • The Dreaded:
    • Erza to the rest of the guild. When Ragna starts using Requip magic everyone instinctively flinches.
    • Played for Laughs, but Ragna admits that he finds Mirajane and her ability to read people much scarier than Erza. Much to her chagrin when Gray relays it to her.
  • Epic Fail: When going out on a job while Ragna is busy with another one, Lucy makes Natsu promise to look for one without any Vulcans, which he agrees to. They end up having to deal with five, though Natsu protests that even the guide said they'd never been seen in the area before.
  • Exact Words: Played for Laughs. When Ragna agrees to a spar with Natsu during their job, he says to keep it street level, with Happy as the referee. After Ragna protests when the Dragon Slayer unleashes a massive wave of flame, Happy says that it would just about destroy a street, so it's valid.
  • Experienced Protagonist: Ragna comes straight off the heels of BlazBlue: Central Fiction, and has fought numerous Physical God's and Eldritch Abomination's by this point.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Inverted. After Ragna deals with Erigor, Natsu starts to panic when he sees the Rune Knights approaching, quickly saying they should get out of their since they'll want to arrest them for property damage... only for the group to realise they actually haven't caused any major property damage when pursuing the dark guild, so they're in the clear for once.
  • Fetch Quest: A more long term variant. Porlyusica says she can make something that will let Ragna use his right arm and eye again, but he'll need to get several rare ingredients for her to do so. This forms a mini-arc where he takes jobs with each of the ingredients as a reward.
  • Foil: Ragna and Mirajane. Both are white haired, powerful fighters who are the eldest of three siblings, very capable cooks, and have mellowed out greatly from their angry demeanors from when they were younger. Ragna is outwardly gruff and intimidating, while being rather supportive and nurturing to his friends with minimal prompting. Mirajane by contrast, is openly friendly and helpful to others, but is easily capable of intimidating those who push the wrong buttons, being an S-Class wizard. Lucy even notes the two fit the roles of Team Dad and Team Mom amongst Fairy Tail.
  • Handicapped Badass: Even down an eye and an arm, Ragna is still a physical powerhouse and an incredibly skilled fighter, barely being slowed down thanks to prior experience with this condition.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Loke may be The Casanova, but makes sure to look after his guildmates and exploits his popularity to help get better deals with clients. In his job with Ragna, he convinced the client to just have him accompany her, while 'convincing' Ragna to leave early by paying him off, ensuring that he gets more money (which he needs) and doesn't have to deal with a stuck-up noble any more than he has to.
    • Ragna quickly notes that Mirajane is scarily perceptive when it comes to reading people, and is able to easily motivate others. What's more, Elfman reveals she actually handles a lot of the business side of the guild in keeping the tavern running, including stocking food, drink and updating the noticeboard.
    • During his mission with Ragna, Natsu manages to give some insightful perspective on both Ragna' actions defending Lucy and Levy and the guild members reactions. He accurately accurately notes the rest of the guild won't hold him killing someone to protect his guildmates against him, at least not for long.
    • The members of Fairy Tail themselves are surprised that Ragna is such a proficient cook, and actually enjoys doing so to boot.
  • I Read It for the Articles: Lucy insists to Ragna that this is why she reads the Sorcerer Weekly, and takes offense when he calls it a pinup magazine. In response, he dryly points out she has all the pages with centerfolds bookmarked, to her embarrassment.
  • Irony:
    • In his home series, Ragna was (initially) one of the more hot headed characters who tended to favor the direct approach in a setting full of Chessmasters, something that frequently landed him in hot water. By the time he arrives in Fiore, he's overcome the worst of his flaws and learned the value of planning ahead... right in time to join a guild full of people even more reckless than he used to be and forcing him to be the voice of reason and reign in their quirky and destructive behavior.
    • Ragna notes that the job request from the Magic Council is suspiciously convenient for him, with his guildmates telling him he's being overly paranoid. A few scenes later has Siegrain confirm to Ultear that he gave him the request in hopes of learning more about the potential Spanner in the Works, before commenting he'd have to be incredibly paranoid to suspect anything.
  • Joke and Receive: Ragna and Elfman go to a manliness contest held by a local duke. When asking how he made his fortune, Ragna jokingly asks if it was through protein shakes and muscle powder, which Elfman confirms.
  • Lesser of Two Evils: A comical version. Ragna accepts Natsu and the others calling him 'dad' since he finds it more bearable than 'old man'.
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: Ragna, Natsu and Happy all agree to tell the others the archaeologists they escorted on a job dug up an old treaty, rather than an ancient porn book.
  • Mundane Utility:
    • Ragna learns Requip magic and uses it to avoid carrying around books to read on jobs.
    • Since he defeated the Vanisher Brothers before they could use their attack reflecting frying pan, Ragna fails to learn of it's abilities and primarily uses it as an actual frying pan.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Averted by Elfman, who has no issues with his sister potential starting a relationship with Ragna, internally noting she can take care of herself. He also admits it would be amusing to see her fans reactions to her officially being off the market.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Lucy notes that despite Ragna's annoyance at Natsu, Happy and herself calling him 'dad', a fair amount of his actions involve looking out for them, scolding them when they act out and generally playing the part of one.
  • Not So Above It All: Erza generally comes across as one of the saner members of the guild, and most frequently tasked with maintaining order, but there are several moments where she displays the same level of eccentric behavior as her guildmates.
    • Upon hearing about several of the others calling Ragna 'dad', rather than discourage it she actually joins in, to everyone's shock.
    • She joins the others in their horror over averting their usual Destructive Savior tendencies, calling the very idea unnatural.
    • Later on, as Ragna decides to indulge in these same tendencies when a client tried to screw him out of his payment, despite being elsewhere, she admits to feeling a sense of pride without knowing why, implying she would approve of such an action.
    • During Ragna and Mirajane's cooking competition, she declares Mirajane's strawberry shortcake wins, and intimidates Natsu and Gray into voting for it as well. She also more or less promises to beat the crap out of Natsu for defying her afterwards.
  • Oblivious to Love: Juvia is just as smitten with Gray upon meeting with him as she was in canon, to the point where Ragna considered it blatantly obvious. As the two head back to the guild, Gray asks Ragna if there was maybe a sign that she was interested in him.
    Ragna: ...Godspeed Juvia Lockster, Godspeed...
  • Oh, Crap!: The noblewoman who hired Ragna to deal with the elemental wolves on her property (which she stated were direwolves on the job description) refuses to pay him for 'failing' to complete the job, before mockingly asking if he thinks she'd pay a member of some no-name guild. She has a moment to realise her mistake when he flashes his Fairy Tail emblem.
  • Only Sane by Comparison: Ragna notes that despite having more common sense than most of Fairy Tail, Lucy's fixation on her appearance and becoming a prominent member (having unintentionally implied a desire to be just as destructive as the rest) means in several ways she's just as quirky as her new guildmates.
  • Only Sane Man: Ragna frequently finds himself as this to the rest of Fairy Tail, even moreso than Lucy, expressing shock at everyone's Bunny-Ears Lawyer and Destructive Savior tendencies.
  • Parental Substitute: While calling him 'dad' started as a joke, by the later chapters it's made clear that Lucy has genuinely come to see Ragna as a father figure, with him reciprocating the sentiment by internally calling her his surrogate daughter. She continues calling him such even after his eye and arm are restored.
  • Properly Paranoid: Ragna is suspicious when a job from the Magic Council falls into his lap which just so happens to have one of the ingredients he needs for Porlyusica's medicine, wondering if that means someone is keeping tabs on him... which is perfectly accurate, as Siegrain arranged for it to get a feel for the mans capabilities.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Episode 8 has Ragna slowly reach his. Throughout the morning, people repeatedly mistake him for an old man, grating on his nerves. Then he takes a job to clear out two direwolves from a noblewoman's property. only to find out that they are actually elemental wolves, and there are five of them (each with a different element) who have excellent teamwork. After a tough fight he returns to the mansion of the client, where he has to strongarm his way into meeting her. She then proceeds to insult him, his guild, on top of refusing to pay him when he asks for compensation for the faulty information on the job. He then proceeds to flash his Fairy Tail guild emblem for intimidation and wreck half the mansion before leaving.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure:
    • While not happy about it, Makarov elects not to punish Ragna for killing the twelveth Blade of Gilgamesh, noting that he did so to save Lucy and Levy, and opted to come forth about it immediately rather than try to keep it hidden.
    • Despite everyone's fear as a result of her personal distaste of killing people, Erza also plays this role to Ragna. She asks to hear his account of events before coming to a decision, and rather than punish him for it, recognizes he was put in a difficult spot and elects to help him train with a sparring match instead.
  • Running Gag:
    • People mistaking Ragna for an old man, to his increasing ire.
    • Lucy can't seem to avoid encountering Vulcans on jobs, even encountering one on the way back from a job with team Shadow Gear.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • Seeing the obvious attraction Juvia has for Gray, Ragna makes sure the two have time alone together on their joint job, and mentally wishes her luck when Gray asks if he thinks she might have a crush on him.
    • Lucy is rather receptive to the idea of Ragna and Mirajane becoming an item, and is disappointed to hear neither is interested in taking it past a first date.
  • Ship Tease: Between Ragna and Mirajane, who build a rapport while working together on preparing food and drinks, and the latter goes out of her way to help the former with several of his problems. The two even go on a job as a date after his eye and arm are destroyed.
  • Sincerity Mode: After hearing about the above Rage Breaking Point moment, Mirajane praises Ragna for his restraint upon hearing he only destroyed half the mansion. By Fairy Tail standards, that is considered rather restrained.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Natsu displays plenty of clever tricks in his sparring match with Ragna despite agreeing to keep it at "street level", and catches the reaper off guard several times. He also manages to come up with a move to take down a security golem with next to no collateral damage less than a minute after Ragna challenged him to do so, displaying impressive creativity and an application of basic physics.
  • Supreme Chef: Ragna's proficiency at cooking is such that he's able to earn some steady income assisting Mirajane at the bar, herself an example of this trope. After having his eye and arm restored, the two even have a cooking duel which is evenly matched for the most part.
  • Taught by Experience:
    • Ragna quickly deduces the nature of the XII Blade of Gilgamesh's ability due to the similarities it had with Taokaka's Overdrive.
    • Likewise, he deals with Erza's Heavens Wheel armour and its Storm of Blades better than she expected thanks to experience fighting Nu.
  • Team Dad: Ragna serves as this to the strongest team, Lucy especially, to the point where Natsu and the others semi-jokingly call him 'dad'. Later chapters have her more or less admit she sees him as a Parental Substitute.
  • Took a Level in Badass: To compensate for his reduced arsenal, Ragna starts learning basic magic from Makarov, including flame, lightning, and requip.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Almost everyone who meets him for the first time dismisses Ragna as a grouchy old cripple. He takes great joy in proving them wrong.
  • Worst. Whatever. Ever!: Seeing Natsu and Happy's attempts at being 'ninjas' (really just wrapping his scarf and a mask around their faces respectively while punctuating sentences with 'nin-nin'), Ragna declares them the worst ninjas he's ever met... before amending they're the second worst ninja's he's ever met upon recalling Bang and his No Indoor Voice.
  • Younger Than They Look: Due to a combination of his inactive eye and arm, scowling face and white hair, people mistake Ragna (who is in his mid-to-late twenties) for an old man. Mirajane discovers when both eyes are open he looks like his actual age. After having both restored and arriving at the guildhall the others initially don't believe that it's him.
