All the Young Dudes is a Harry Potter fanfiction written by MsKingBean86 on Archive of Our Own. It spans over 500,000 words, 188 chapters, and covers a period of 27 years. Told from the point of view of Remus Lupin, a werewolf who grew up in a boys’ home, readers watch him grow up, discover his sexuality, fight in a war, and deal with the events of the Harry Potter series.

All the Young Dudes contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Jerkass:
    • Downplayed with Remus Lupin. While he is a lot more aggresive because of his rough childhood, he is still a good person deep down when one gets to know him.
    • Played a bit more staright with a younger Severus Snape. In canon, he was bullied by the Marauders, with James and Sirius particularly being guilty of harrasing him for no reason on occasion. In this fic however, he is instead a snobbish prick who picks and insults Remus practically from the time they meet, thus making the Marauders' actions against him a lot more justifiable, with James and Sirius instead coming out as simply trying to protect their friend. Despite this, he still has a relatively good relationship with Lily Evans.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Remus Lupin gets this in spades. In the books and films, despite his condition, he still had a relatively normal childhood. Here, after he was bitten, his father killed himself because of it, while his mother abandoned him at a muggle children's home in England, where he was constantly mistreated and had no friends, which made him a bit rough and angry. However, this also allows for his bond he eventually forms with James, Sirius and Peter to become a lot more meaningful.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Marlene, towards Mary.
  • Alone Among the Couples: Remus feels this way during his fourth year, when all of his friends seem to be single-mindedly pursuing relationships.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Remus is definitely attracted to men, but occasionally shows interest in women as well.
  • Animorphism: James, Sirius and Peter once they become animagi.
  • Beach Kiss: Remus and Sirius rekindle their relationship during a vacation to Cornwall with their friends.
  • Big Brother Instinct: James. Specially after Remus comes out.
  • Clock Tampering: In their fourth year, the Marauders carry out a prank which involves changing Hogwarts' master clock so that all the timekeeping devices in the castle display the wrong time.
  • Closet Gay: Considering that this is a coming-of-age story set primarily in the 1970s, this applies to almost all of the LGBTQ characters at some point, including: Remus, Sirius, Christopher, and Marlene.
  • Cool Teacher: Professor Leo Ferox, the Care of Magical Creatures teacher in Remus’s third and fourth years. He's also Remus's first crush.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: So many.
    • First off, Remus himself. He was bitten by a werewolf at age five, then his father committed suicide, and his mother gave him to a boys’ home, where he was frequently bullied. Overlaps with Orphan's Ordeal.
    • Sirius was raised by pureblood fanatics, who abused him and disciplined with the use of a curse, and eventually used the Cruciatus Curse on him.
  • Disinherited Child: Sirius was cast out of the Black family. Luckily, he got an Unexpected Inheritance from his Uncle Alphard.
  • Doorstopper: At over 520,000 words, the fic is about half the length of the entire Harry Potter series.
  • Gayngst: Sirius, because of his homophobic family.
  • Good Parents: Fleamont and Euphemia Potter are undoubtedly good parents to James and to his friends, and they’re a rare example in the series.
  • I Have No Son!:
    • Grant Chapman was kicked out by his uncle for being gay.
    • Walpurga and Orion to Sirius.
  • Maternally Challenged: Hope gave up Remus after Lyall's suicide because she didn't think she could raise him alone.
  • Messy Hair: James’s hair is described as only laying flat when he’s fresh out of the shower.
  • Mr. Fanservice: There are many, many passages spent describing Sirius’s good looks.
  • Pseudo Canonical Fic: It's almost entirely canon-compliant, with the exception of some original characters and Remus's backstory. Instead of growing up with two loving parents, his father committed suicide and his mother placed him in a Orphanage of Fear.
  • Rouge Angles of Satin: MsKingBean89 misspelled "Walburga" as "Walpurga." It remains this way for the rest of the fic.
  • Royal Inbreeding: The Blacks in general. Invoked when they try to force Narcissa and Sirius into an engagement, which Remus secretly helps prevent with an Unbreakable Vow.
  • Secret Relationship: Remus and Sirius keep their relationship a secret for much of their time at Hogwarts.
    • Also applies to Grant and Remus's relationship before fifth year.
    • And Yaz and Marlene, for a bit.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: Once they finally get together, James and Lily.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: While he enjoys the attention girls will give him, James only ever shows an interest in Lily.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: despite still being a nice guy, James can come out as this occassionally, which his friends are aware about.
  • Titled After the Song: Named after "All the Young Dudes" by Mott the Hoople. The characters listen to the song during their holiday in Cornwall.
  • Tone Shift: Things get pretty dark as soon as the Marauders leave Hogwarts and end up in the middle of the First Wizarding War.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Remus, undoubtedly. By the time he goes to Hogwarts, he can definitely hold up in a fight, and at thirteen he begins helping an older gang of boys break into pubs and shops. Once back at Hogwarts, he starts up a business selling cigarettes to older students.
  • The Unfavorite:
    • Sirius, amongst his family. Despite being the heir, he doesn’t tow the family line and resultantly bears the brunt of Walpurga’s abuse.
    • Remus and Peter sometimes feel this way within the Marauders group.
