Tropes used by this author include:
- Adaptation Expansion: A good amount of Lightyearpig's stories do this to the shows involved, allowing for concepts either rarely explored or not at all to be given more focus, such as the reactions to Era 3, the origins of Haruko Haruhara, and much more.
- Christmas Episode: Mixed with Yet Another Christmas Carol, Ghosts of Past, Present & Future is a Transplanted Character Fic of A Christmas Carol featuring characters from My Hero Academia playing the story's characters, like Katsuki Bakugo as Ebenezer Scrooge.
- Years later came the release of Fooly Falls: A FLCL Christmas in Gravity Falls, which is this for Fooly Falls where the Pines family go on an adventure with the Krampus to clear Santa Claus's name.
- Crossover: Most of Lightyearpig's stories are crossovers, though he has dipped his toes into writing for one show, such as his Steven Universe: Alternate Future series.
- Dead Fic: A few of these have met this fate. For example, Lightyearpig wrote two chapters of Black Fist, a crossover between One-Punch Man and Villainous, before suddenly stopping. Subverted with Steven Universe: The Fantastic Mutants and Sly Cooper: Boiling Blood, where the author states he plans on returning to them someday.
- Doorstopper: By the end of Steven Universe: Snake Eyes, the Steven Universe: Alternate Future franchise totals at 497,030 words across six stories of 90 individual chapters, and a one-shot.
- Fix Fic: While not to the extent of other fanfictions, some of Lightyearpig's stories do address and explain certain controversial plot elements and character beats from the source material in their own fashion, chief among them being Steven Universe: Alternate Future, which addresses many criticisms about the source material while also greatly expanding the lore beyond what was seen in the show.
- Fusion Fic: Many of his crossovers merge both worlds of each show together. For example, Gravity Soul has the casts of Gravity Falls and Soul Eater existing in the same world only a few states apart, and Shelluva Boss featuring the Hellaverse's version of Hell as the Hell that the Turtles interact with.
- Halloween Episode: You'll Never See It Coming is a Halloween one-shot featuring Webby Vanderquack, Huey, Dewey & Louie Duck, Lena & Violet Sabrewing, Gosalyn Waddlemeyer, and Boyd Beaks dressing up as the Phantom Thieves of Heart and try to steal the Holy Grail from Scrooge to use as a trick or treat basket.
- "Not So Different" Remark: Charlie Morningstar believes this after meeting Mark Grayson and hearing about his life after discovering his powers, since they both had to deal with strained relationships with their fathers (Lucifer Morningstar and Omni-Man) and the people closest to them keeping secrets (Amber Bennett and Vaggie).
- Obvious Crossover Method: Has been prone to this a few times, usually by having characters from two different series taking place in the same world, only living a few states apart, like Gravity Soul positing that Gravity Falls is just a few states away from Death City.
- Odd Friendship: A Recurring Element of his where two characters from completely different works become best friends. Examples include Stan Pines and Haruko Haruhara, Lapis Lazuli and Thor Odinson, Ford Pines and Blair, Lilith Clawthorne and Carmelita Fox, and Michelangelo and Millie.
- Recurring Element: Particularly when it comes to his crossover fics.
- Two or more villains from the series involved enter a Villain Team-Up, usually adding in a Legion of Doom consisting of other villains from their respective shows. Likewise, the heroes of both shows also team up to stop their enemies.
- Two characters form an Odd Friendship with each other, with their interactions providing a good dose of comic relief.
- Expansion of one show's lore that connects it to the other.
- One or more villains form an Enemy Mine with the heroes, sometimes resulting in a Heel–Face Turn.
- A Big Badass Battle Sequence with all the heroes and their allies against the villains.
- Characters who usually don't get much screentime in the source material are given bigger roles due to either being Ensemble Darkhorses, victims of They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character, or the Creator's Favorite.
- Related to Odd Friendship, two characters becoming friends through a Commonality Connection or two.
- Reference Overdosed: Due to Lightyearpig being raised on shows like The Simpsons that thrived on these, his stories are also filled with them.
- Villain Team-Up: Done quite a few times in his crossover fics. Oftentimes, this will result in a Legion of Doom made up of various villains from the series involved.
- The Marvel Gems Universe: Holly Blue Agate and Titus in Clod on the Run, Thanos, Mephisto, and the Diamonds in Secret Wars, and Doctor Doom and Magneto in The Fantastic Mutants.
- Gravity Soul: Bill Cipher and Kishin Asura.
- Sly Cooper: Boiling Blood: Emperor Belos, Penelope, and Clockwerk. This story in particular is notable for mainly featuring original characters making up the majority of the villains.
- Shelluva Boss: The Utrom, Tengu, and Cyber Shredders, along with characters such as Kavaxas, Striker, Verosika Mayday, Fizzarolli, Sir Pentious, and many others.
- Super-Shy: Klarion the Witch Boy and Stigma.
- Weird Crossover: Many crossovers by Lightyearpig mix series that not many would expect to go together, like Gravity Falls and FLCL, or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Helluva Boss. And that's not even getting into his planned stories.
- What If?: A question asked by many of his crossovers.
- Fooly Falls: What if Haruko Haruhara met Dipper and Mabel Pines instead of Naota Nandaba?
- Marvel Gems Universe: What if the Crystal Gems existed in the Marvel Universe?
- Gravity Soul: What if Bill Cipher struck a deal with Kishin Asura?
- Sly Cooper: Boiling Blood: What if Sly Cooper was sent to the Boiling Isles at the end of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time instead of ancient Egypt?
- Shelluva Boss: What if the Immediate Murder Professionals were hired to kill the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by the Utrom Shredder?
- You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Has done this a few times, with two dedicated one-shots featuring this.
- Let the Pain Be Shared, a The Owl House one-shot featuring Eda and Lilith Clawthorne shows Lilith having reoccurring nightmares about failing to save Eda from being petrified before becoming petrified herself. At Hooty's suggestion, Lilith visits Eda in her nest to vent her frustrations before the two engage in some sisterly bonding. The author then ends the fic with this line.
- Super-Shy is a crossover between Superman and Shy where, after Teru has a 10-Minute Retirement out of guilt for not saving Iko Koishikawa, Superman arrives to comfort her in a scene clearly meant to reference the Signature Scene of All-Star Superman.
Superman: I heard what happened to that other girl on the roller coaster, Miss Momijiyama. It's never as bad as it seems. You're much stronger than you think you are, trust me. - You Are Not Alone:
- The Invincible/Hazbin Hotel one-shot An Invincible Kindred Spirit in Hell has Mark Grayson getting a pep-talk from Charlie Morningstar and friends when he lands in Hell during his fight with Angstrom Levy. Mark then learns about how Charlie had to deal with parental issues and people she loves keeping secrets from her too, leading him to declare that they're not so different. When a portal appears to presumably take Mark home, Charlie says goodbye by saying this.
Charlie: Just remember, no matter how horrible things get, you are never alone. Even if we're universes apart, I'll always be cheering you on.- The third chapter of Sly Cooper: Boiling Blood has Luz learning about the death of Sly's parents by Clockwerk and tries comforting him by talking about the death of her father. This Friendship Moment between the two is what allows them to become Like Brother and Sister.
