The Protagonists

    Daisuke Kambe

Daisuke Kambe

Voiced by: Yusuke Onuki (Japanese), Adam Rowe (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/daisuke_kambe.png

The son of the wealthy Kambe family. Using his money and advanced technology, he solves crime cases. He becomes a member of the Metropolitan Police Department's Modern Crime Prevention Task Force, and is partnered with Haru Kato.

  • Arbitrarily Large Bank Account: He's extraordinarily wealthy, using his vast wealth as a detective. In the first episode alone he ends up paying for 1,369,800,000 Yennote  in costs, paying for double the costs of incurred damages and casually buying a car from a prince for 1,000,000,000 Yen.
  • The Ace: There's no denying that Kambe is good at what he does, but his fortune makes him great at it.
  • Cowboy Cop: He doesn't play by the rules but he rather solves crime with money which is a huge headache for Kato. In fact, he even has his own arsenal of gadgets and weapons which he and Suzue can use anytime and has his own holding cell for suspects.
  • Crime Fighting With Cash: Whenever he encounters obstacles in his case, Daisuke would throw money at it to proceed. Need a vehicle to chase down a criminal? Buy the car of a visiting prince. Interrogating suspects? Bribe them for information. Need to stop a drug dealing ring? Purchase the whole building they were gathered in and bombard the place with sleeping gas. Of course, there are some limitations where Daisuke can't buy his way out unless Haru gets involved.
  • Drives Like Crazy: While chasing down a van with a bomb, he drives through classic cars, nearly hits two pedestrians, and crashes his car into a pole before buying a new one.
  • Every Man Has His Price: A believer in this. He gets a criminal to rat out his partner of 10 years by paying him his named price.
  • Fiction 500: As the son of the Kambe family, Daisuke is ridiculously wealthy, nonchalantly purchasing a prince's car for 1,000,000,000 Yennote .
  • Omniglot: Daisuke can speak Japanese and Arabic. Judging from information in the first episode, it's assumed that he can speak English since Haru and the others were told that he spent some time in London to be trained under the Metropolitan Police Service.
  • Not So Above It All: Elegant and wealthy as he is, Episode 4 revolves around him basically having a low-key temper tantrum and running away from home to stay with his best friend.
  • Non-Idle Rich: Despite being extremely rich, he's a detective who uses his money to solve crimes. Though strangely enough, he mentions that he's not going to be the family head.
  • Parental Abandonment: His mother was murdered nineteen years ago while his father committed suicide when he was a suspect for the murder. This is Daisuke's reason for becoming a detective: to find out the truth behind his mother's death and why his father murdered her.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The cool, composed Blue Oni to Haru's hot-blooded, passionate Red Oni. It can be seen in how they interact during their missions.
  • Resign in Protest: After Chosuke and Takei's deaths, Daisuke turns over his police ID so he can go after their killer who is his supposedly-dead father. While he claims the case that got Chosuke and Takei killed is strictly a family affair which he should personally handle, he had a very good reason to resign because several of the police higher-ups helped his father cover up his mother's murder case.
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: Downplayed. He's by no means an idiot, but it's clear he's so used to the upper-class life that living in tiny apartments, buying groceries, preparing food by yourself, and the very existence of instant noodles is news to him.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: How he joined the police force as a detective in the first place. He's acquainted with the police superintendent who assigns him in the Modern Crimes Division as his request. However, this causes some suspicion from Nakamoto and Takei, who suspects that Kambe is hiding something and that the higher-ups quickly close the case on the attempted assassination of the Poliador president.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Befitting his wealth, he stands out as the best dressed among the cast, wearing a suit complete with a waistcoat, watch, and collar links.
  • Spell My Name With An S: 'Kambe' or 'Kanbe'.
  • Spy Catsuit: He has his own personalized black leather suit that is equipped with camouflage and lets him move quickly.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: With Haru, who detests his materialistic methods. Haru believes that, during interrogation, the detective and suspects' hearts should connect instead of using money and technology to find out information.
  • Unkempt Beauty: He still looks good freshly showered, in frumpier clothing, and messy hair.
  • Virtual Sidekick: HEUSC is Daisuke's A.I. butler who immediately processes all of Daisuke's requests through his technological earring and sunglasses when investigating cases.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Haru calls out him for being indirectly responsible for Chosuke and Takei's deaths. Because Daisuke is more focused on finding out the truth about his father's actions, he and Haru are unable to get back to the mansion on time. As a result, Suzue was injured and Chosuke and Takei were brutally murdered.
  • With Friends Like These...: lets Haru drop into the harbor when stopping the van from blowing up a bridge in the first episode. As a Call-Back in the final episode, he lets Haru drop into the New York harbor as he writes a check for the damage he caused instead.
  • Younger Than They Look: His sharp features, sense of style, and mature mannerisms make him seem a lot older than he is, when in actuality, he's 27.

  • Hot-Blooded: He's a passionate young man, putting him at odds with Daisuke who riles him up with his materialistic methods as a detective.
  • Messy Hair: His light brown hair is an unruly mess, contrasting with Daisuke's neatly styled black hair.
  • Older Than They Look: Many fans were surprised that the baby-faced Haru with prominent and beautiful lower eyelashes is nearly thirty years old, two years older than Daisuke.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The hot-blooded, passionate Red Oni to Daisuke's cool, composed Blue Oni. It can be seen in how they interact during their missions.

Persons of Interest

    Spoiler Character

Daisuke's father and head of the Kambe family who is said to have died in a car accident after he was identified as a suspect on his wife's murder.

  • Archnemesis Dad: He is his wife's killer. Daisuke himself witnessed it when he was young which led him to become a detective so that he wants to know why his father did it. However as Daisuke tries to come closer to the truth, Shigemaru is one step ahead of him as he is one of the administrators of HEUSC and hides all of the information about the adollium research. Then, he kills both Chosuke and Takei who were the lead investigators of his wife's murder case. Then, it's subverted when it turns out that he had nothing to do with his wife's death and it's his own mother who's behind it.
  • Faking the Dead: Just when the police are about to apprehend him for questioning, his car was torched and a suicide note was found which closed the case abruptly. However, nineteen years later, he shows up alive and well, much to Daisuke and Suzue's shock. Turns out that the butler, Hattori, is the one who is posing as Shigemaru while the real one is hiding in one of the Kambe mansions in a coma.
  • Mad Scientist: Like his wife, he's a scientist who also researched the adollium and is one of the administrators of HEUSC. However, he got very greedy where he plans to sell the adollium technology to weapons dealers and corporations. This ruins his marriage with Sayuri, who was against giving the adollium because of the danger it imposes.
  • Not Helping Your Case: As revealed in the final episode, he went to his wife's house to talk to her but he found her dead with the knife on the chest. It even gets worse the police even suspect him for the crime.
  • Til Murder Do Us Part: He murdered his wife, Sayuri, because she rejected his plan to sell her adollium research. This research is the reason for the deterioration of their marriage. However as shown in the final episode, he didn't actually kill her.

Strangely enough, Suzue calls him "Master Daisuke", and appears to take on the role as his caretaker. However, in the original novel of the same name, Suzue is Daisuke's fiancée.
  • Fanservice: See all of those scenes with a person in lingerie during the opening sequence? That's Suzue.

    Kikuko Kambe

Kikuko

Voiced by: Nana Yamaguchi (Japanese), Linda Leonard (English)

The grandmother of Daisuke and matriarch of the Kambe Family.

  • Broken Pedestal: Daisuke respects her very much that he even brings his work partner, Haru, to her after he accepted his job as a detective. However, when it comes to the murder case of his mother's death, Daisuke slowly loses his trust on her when he noticed she's hiding the truth from him that eventually caused a lot of deaths particularly Chosuke's and Takai's. When it's revealed that she's the mastermind and nearly entices him not to release his parents' research which got foiled by Haru, Daisuke immediately arrests her.
  • Hypocrite:
    • After Daisuke outs her for knowing that his father is alive, Kikuko defends that it's natural for a parent to protect her child. Then, Daisuke retorts that it's also natural for a child like him to go after his mother's murderer.
    • She's even a bigger hypocrite in the final episode where she admits being behind Sayuri's death because her adollium research would be used as a weapon if it goes to the public. And yet, through her butler, who disguises himself as Shigemaru, she tries to sell the adollium to a weapons dealer.
  • Mama Bear: A deconstructed case as she'll do anything to protect her son even if it means making him a scapegoat for his wife's death which also traumatized their son for the rest of his life. As she and Chosuke explained, it's natural for a parent to protect their child. However, Daisuke calls her out for hiding the truth from him.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Her reason for killing Sayuri. While the research on the adollium is a huge breakthrough as it's considered another type of element which can be used as renewable energy similar to plutonium, she still considers it very dangerous if it falls into the wrong hands. She believes that humanity at this time isn't ready for another new type of element given their history of nuclear warfare which Kikuko herself experienced back in World War 2. She encourages Daisuke to think about it before releasing his parents' research to the public.

    Sayuri Kambe

Sayuri

Voiced by: Mamiko Noto

Daisuke's late mother who was a renowned scientist.

  • Awful Wedded Life: Initially, she and Shigemaru lived a very happy life with their son. However, her adollium research changed their lives which caused their marriage to deteriorate, eventually leading her to live in another house away from her husband and son.

  • Posthumous Character: She died nineteen years ago and her death affected her son and those involved in her case.
  • Reluctant Mad Scientist: She was an accomplished scientist who managed to develop a new type of element that is so deadly and powerful which can be both used as renewable energy and a weapon of mass destruction similar to plutonium. When her husband plans to sell it to corporations, she rejected his plans and left him. However, her mother-in-law doesn't want the research to be published so she has her killed.

    HEUSC

HEUSC

Voiced by: Kazuyuki Okitsu (Japanese), Jim Foronda (English)

An AI developed by the Kambe Corp and Daisuke's personal butler. Shigemaru can also have commands placed on it.

He's later used by the TMPD's MPCTF.

  • Master Computer: It has a huge database which gives Daisuke every available information. However, it is unable to give information related to the Kambe family because one of the administrators, who were supposed to be dead, seals, and even deletes this information.
  • Mundane Utility: HEUSC was used by the TMPD as an AI assistant to help the officers, but the MPCTF makes it do things outside of police work such as being a shopping assistant for Mahoro or Teppei's betting assistant in horse racing, although he tells him that he can't help him.
  • Sinister Surveillance: It has a huge surveillance system which lets Daisuke and Suzue see the events on the city. Ironically, Shigemaru also uses this system for his advantage over his son.

    Hattori

Jiro Hattori

Voiced by: Hideaki Tezuka (Japanese), Brian Mathis (English)

The Kambes' family butler.

  • Attack Its Weak Point: Hattori had gotten injured in the waist during the previous tanker incident, so when Haru had gotten close to Hattori, he squeezes that spot to knock out Hattori. Haru was very lucky to even pull off a stunt like that because he wasn't a target of Hattori's orders.
  • Battle Butler: Hattori has professional fighting skills, but is only limited by the orders given to him.
  • The Butler Did It: In a very literal sense. He's actually the one who killed Sayuri Kambe on Kikuko's orders. Then, he disguises himself as Shigemaru in order to fool Daisuke and the police. With Kikuko's help who has access to HEUSC, he is able to bypass the security system and kills Chosuke and Takai.
  • Hero Killer: Offs Chosuke and Takei after the end of "Money Burns a Hole in the Pocket".
  • Latex Perfection: He wears a perfect latex mask of Shigemaru Kambe, which tricked Daisuke, Suzue, and the police.
  • Meaningful Name: The last name Hattori is closely associated with the famous Japanese Ninja Hattori Hanzō. This foreshadowed his involvement as an assassin for Kikoku Kambe's crimes.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: Outside of Chosuke and Takei, he acts this way to anyone who encounters him, opting to simply injure them instead as he was ordered to. He does this to Suzue when he first arrives at the mansion, though what exactly he did to her is not shown onscreen. Then again to Haru, who is shot in the leg while trying to arrest him.
  • Undying Loyalty: He is extremely loyal to Kikuko, and will do anything she orders him to do without question, such as killing Sayuri. He also will not do anything without direct orders, as he takes a great care to not kill Kato even when he as the latter at gunpoint because Sayuri had not order him to kill Kato.
  • Walking Spoiler: His role in the last episode is guaranteed to be very spoiler-ish.
