The Colony

The main characters of the story.

  • Mouse World: In a world with no humans, this is basically the setting.
  • Nice Mice: They are the heroes of the story. Subverted with Resher and his followers.
  • You Dirty Rat!: Averted with Umf, who is friendly and helpful. Most rats prefer to keep to themselves.

    Mice/Rats

Wix

Species: House Mouse

Despite his small stature, Wix is one of the best scavengers in the colony. He is deceptively fast and can avoid traps and poison better than any other mouse, but his overconfidence and impatience can get him into trouble at times.

During a mission, Wix is all business, thoroughly searching every crack and crevice until he finds something of value. He insists that anything found goes back to the colony, keeping nothing for himself. He doesn't need it. To him, the search is its own reward. He's at his happiest when digging through an old house in search of loot.

Because of this, he tends to be a loner and is generally aloof when it comes to affairs of the colony, though he enjoys raiding with Umf and occasionally annoying Pict.

Wix has become impatient with the elders for only sending him to the nearby houses, as they have been thoroughly searched and looted many times. He yearns to join the scouts searching far from the colony for new targets to scavenge, but the elders are reluctant to send the brash young mouse too far, preferring the older, more experienced mice for scouting.

  • Anti-Hero: Prefers to be alone and has a bit of a brash side, but ultimately cares for his friends and the colony.
  • The Ace: The best scavenger in the whole colony and the best in evading poison and traps.
  • Ear Notch: Wix has two in his right ear, a sign of having learned mastery of scrounging the hard way.
  • The Hero: The main focus of the story.
  • Took a Level in Badass: From evading feral cats to facing a pack of wolves.

Pict

Species: House Mouse

Pict is a spirited and intelligent mouse being groomed by her father Orim to lead the colony when he is gone. A natural leader taught the finer points of diplomacy by her father, she has become a powerful voice in council meetings, though her temper can flare when dealing with those she sees as corrupt.

Like many in the colony, she is worried that the elders are being overly cautious with their wait-and-see approach to the current crisis, but her solution is seen by most as too extreme, if not outright ridiculous.

Though she dutifully cares for her aging father and works to lead the colony, she often feels imprisoned by her obligations and wishes she could leave the colony house to explore the outside world like the scavengers she organizes. She also worries that this lack of experience is seen as a weakness.

Umf

Species: Rat

Generally, rats and mice do not get along, but Umf is a good-natured exception.

According to Umf, he became tired of life in the city and wandered into the neighborhood by chance. Initially regarded with suspicion by the mice, his friendly disposition and guilelessness won them over. Now he is a welcome member of the colony, and is eager to help by scavenging, though some complain that he eats more than his fair share. He became close friends with Wix after a particularly hairy scavenging run, and the two have been partners ever since.

Umf is quite large, even for a rat, and is often seen as clumsy and foolish. Many are surprised he has survived this long, but Umf always manages to make it out of any jam.

  • The Big Guy: Quite large and one of the friendliest characters you will ever meet.
  • Big Eater: Has a large appetite and many complain that he eats more than his fair share.
  • True Companions: He is a close friend to Wix and to an extent, Pict.

Mottle

Species: House Mouse

Mottle is a young orphan mouse who spends most of her time rummaging through the storeroom looking for tasty bits to eat. She is too young to leave the colony house, but dreams of becoming a scavenger or scout one day like her hero, Wix (who brings her special treats if he finds any.) She is too naive to be concerned with the plight of the colony, and has a silly, carefree attitude most of the time.

Orim

Species: House Mouse

Master Orim is the leader of the mice and father of Pict, and is regarded by nearly everyone as wise and fair. Ancient by mouse standards, Orim has led the mice through many difficult years, but even he may be ill equipped to handle the current crisis. Some have whispered that he has become too cautious in his old age, but Orim still has the support of the other elders.

After the humans left, it was Orim who unified the neighborhood nests of panicked mice into one colony. He organized scavenging raids and established storerooms for food and medicine for the whole colony. Though stores are now running dangerously low, without his leadership the mice would have ran out of food months ago and the colony would be shattered.

Pict is Orim's youngest and only surviving child, and he is extremely protective of her. He is pleased that she has decided to follow in his footsteps, but worries that there won't be a colony left to lead if things don't change soon.

Kessel

Species: House Mouse

Kessel is Orim's right hand and captain of the scouts and guards. He has worked tirelessly to safeguard the colony since it was created, and leads the most important scouting missions personally. He has a great fondness for Pict, though he has doubts that she is capable of leading the colony.

Kessel is exceptionally tall for a mouse, almost resembling a rat. He has a slender frame and moves with a natural grace and agility, and thus avoids predators with amazing ease. Many of the colony mice are envious of his ability, but admire him nonetheless. Still, some complain that the guards have become lax and even abusive recently under his watch, leading to rumors that he doesn't have as much control over them as he likes to think.

  • The Mole: Kessel is working with Resher, although he's far from happy about it.
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: Kessel tries to save Pict and Wix when Resher attempts to murder them, and he even tries to have Resher arrested for everything he's done. Resher immediately has one of his goons stab him in the back, killing him.

Resher

Species: House Mouse

Resher is the head of a western nest of mice who reluctantly joined the colony after a fire destroyed their home. Resher was not born into power, coming from a lowly family in their rigid society, but rapidly moved up the ranks using flattery, bribery, or intimidation, the latter due to his large size and gang of henchmice at his command. He is an extremely ambitious and power hungry mouse, and is adept at gaining followers and resources.

A mouse of action, Resher views the Council of Elders as ineffectual and has been pressuring them to abandon their suburban neighborhood and move to the city, which he believes is still occupied by humans and will provide the lifestyle they are accustomed to. In Resher’s mind, only he can lead the colony to prosperity, and is taking steps to undermine the elders and take control. He will stop at nothing to make sure that the colony follows him to the city.

  • Big "NO!": He lets out one as he's carried off by Nemesis in Chapter 9.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: Resher initially wants to save the colony and believes that waiting until things get better will result in everyone starving to death. But he goes to extreme lengths to accomplish this, such as by having cats attack scavengers, attempting to murder Pict when she finds out about his schemes, and fatally poisoning Master Orim. It's made clear in Chapter 9 when Resher leaves the entire colony to die in a fire that he orchestrated that all he cared about was being leader of the colony, not the colonists themselves.
  • The Starscream: He is treacherous enough to pay the cats with catnips just to move the colony by having them kill a party of loyal scouts. Later he fatally poisons Orim.
  • Would Harm a Senior: He assassinates Orim by poisoning him just so he could usurp his position.

Skek

Species: House Mouse

Skek is Resher's number one henchman. Cantankerous and foul smelling even by mouse standards, he spends his time away from the others, usually skulking in the colony house's basement until Resher needs him for something. No job is too low for Skek, and he can be counted on only as long as the bribes keep coming.

Utt

Species: House Mouse

Utt is the vain and corrupt overseer of the storerooms. Besides gorging on more than his share of the food supplies, he also sneaks larger rations to Resher and his followers, who he views as the savior of the colony. He isn’t terribly bright, but wants what’s best for the colony, if only for his own survival. Resher was able to exploit his fear and vanity to gain his support, and now has free reign of the colony’s supplies, which he uses to bribe others.

Akama

Species: House Mouse

Akama is not technically a member of the colony. In fact, she isn’t a mouse. She is an emissary of the Shade Run rats, a mysterious and reclusive group of rats who control the northern end of the neighborhood.

It is said that long ago the ancestors of the Shade Run rats controlled the entire neighborhood, until a poison outbreak nearly wiped them out. The survivors retreated to the northern houses, and largely avoided the mice that arrived in their absence.

After the humans left, Orim approached the rats and offered them a place in the colony, to the shock of both the rats and mice, who historically did not get along. Though the rats were struggling as much as the mice, they refused to move to the colony and share supplies. However, they were impressed by the wise mouse and agreed to work with them to find a solution to the problems facing both groups. The secretive rats are not known for sharing information with outsiders, but they have thus far been very helpful with coordinating scavenging missions and sharing information about predators in the area.

Akama was chosen as the rats’ ambassador to the colony. She is intelligent and shrewd even by Shade Run standards, but unlike most of her fellow rats, she is more diplomatic and open to working closely with the mice. She is very curious about mouse society, and has taken a particular interest in Pict, who Akama believes is well suited for leadership over the colony. Thus she supports the little white mouse in council meetings and offers advice, but only Akama knows if she is doing it for the good of the colony or because of some hidden agenda of the Shade Run.

The Cats

A group of feral cats that terrorize the mice.

  • Cats Are Mean: All the felines show sadistic delight in catching and eating mice.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: Like all predators, their eyes seem to glow when they hunt.
  • Sapient Eat Sapient: They can talk and think like the mice, but that doesn't stop them from eating them.
  • Starter Villain: They only appear in the first three chapters, after which the wolves take over as the main threat.

    Cats

Titan

Breed: Tortoiseshell Cat

Titan is a large, powerful cat with razor sharp claws and a fiery tortoiseshell coat (a rarity for a male). Born a sickly stray and left to die by the other cats in the neighborhood, he underwent a great growth spurt that made him a massive beast, and he took his vengeance on many of the other strays that had spurned him. He’s now covered in scars from battles with other cats for territory and supremacy, and is the unquestioned leader of the cats, who he rules with brutality. Thoroughly nasty to his prey, he enjoys cruelly toying with his victims before finally killing them.

Unfortunately for the mice, Titan is also a great hunter, and any mouse caught out in the open is easy prey for the big cat. Wix is the only mouse to ever escape his clutches and outrun him, but only after losing part of an ear to a last swipe of Titan’s claws. Titan has never forgotten, and constantly searches for the red mouse, hoping to make up for his one failed hunt.

Ork

Breed: Himalayan Persian

Ork was a spoiled and well groomed Himalayan house cat before being abandoned by her owners. They didn't even remove her collar and bell before they left. This has made it difficult for her to survive on her own, as her bell warns any mice away long before she can sneak up on them.

This would be a sad story if not for the fact that even before she was abandoned, Ork was a particularly nasty beast who, despite being well fed, delighted in tormenting any small creature she could get her hands on.

Her hair has become matted and an infection has taken one eye, but this has only increased her viciousness. What she lacks in stealth, she makes up with sheer brutality.

Scratcher

Breed: European Shorthair

Scratcher is a young stray who has grown up without relying on humans for food. He has speed and agility to make up for his small size, and though he's not particularly bright, he has enough craftiness to occasionally sneak up on something.

Lately he has taken to following Ork around, as he has discovered that Ork's bell sends mice scurrying away from the large feline and into Scratcher's waiting paws. Ork hates the sniveling Scratcher trailing behind her wherever she goes, but she has learned to tolerate his presence, for when Scratcher does catch something, the big Himalayan can take it away from him with brute force.

Gizz and Fig

Breed: Unknown

Gizz and Fig are usually too lazy to go hunting with the others. They prefer lounging around during the day, and rummaging for scraps when they get hungry, though they'll happily chase any mouse that comes their way. They think the other cats are idiots, though Gizz and Fig aren't really any brighter. They usually bicker among themselves, arguing over what tastes better or whose turn it is to dive into the dumpster.

Allies and Supporting Characters

Animals that help or assist the colony.

    Refugees

Snag

Species: Douglas Squirrel

Snag is a cantankerous old Douglas Squirrel who lived deep in the woods until they became flooded. He was persuaded to move to The Refuge with the others, but keeps to himself in the trunk of a dead tree on the southern edge of the island. He is gruff and prefers his solitude, but when he sees a mouse fall out of the sky, he ventures out to help guide her to safety.

Arken

Species: Beaver

Arken is the Master Engineer and Architect of the Beaver dam. His knowledge of dam building is unmatched among the beavers, but even he is hard pressed to meet his king's unreasonable demands. Privately, he questions the king's sanity, but he remains loyal and is determined to finish the dam, no matter the cost.

  • The Ace: He is the best Engineer of the beavers and is in charge of building the Beaver dam.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: He is aware of the king's sanity, but remains loyal to him.

Flik

Species: Flying Squirrel

Flik is a flying squirrel who hangs out with the forest mice, who she finds more friendly than the solitary tree squirrels. She has little to fear from wolves or other land predators, but takes pity on her earthbound friends, so she helps them out, acting as a lookout for any signs of trouble. She is always happy to help foil a wolf’s hunt, and is eager to help the mice fight back against their enemies.

Atlas

Species: Moose

Atlas is a great moose from another forest in the east. Not long after the humans left, his forest began to wither and the herds fell ill. Most of the surviving moose, deer and elk moved away to find food and escape the wolves, but only Atlas went west towards the city. He searches for a mysterious guardian who may be the key to saving the forest.

  • Big Good: One of the largest and most heroic characters in the series.

Skoga

Species: Snapping Turtle

Skoga is a large and ancient snapper turtle who has lived in the woods longer than any other living creature. He has no interest in the comparatively brief lives of others and wants to be left alone. He has lived in torpor in the stream for months as the cold weather has lingered on, and hates to be disturbed.

  • The Hermit: He prefers to be left alone and does not like to be disturbed.

The Witches

Species: Red Fox

The witches are a strange trio of fox sisters who silently stalk the forest, making their presence known only when they choose. They manipulate certain events for reasons that are only known to them. For some strange reason they want to help Wix, but it’s unclear if they are just playing a game with him, or if they have other motives.

The Empress

Species: Grizzly Bear

A large grizzly she-bear who ruled over the forest and kept the wolves at bay. However, after losing her son, she retreated into her cave and hasn't left it for years. Her absence leaves the other animals vulnerable to the wolves.

  • Achilles in His Tent: One of the strongest characters, but falls into depression after the death of her son. She snaps out of this when Pict pokes her nose with a stick.
  • Bears Are Bad News: A rare heroic example. After she snaps out of her depression, the first thing she does is tear through the wolf pack.
  • Big Good: Is this for the entire forest.
  • The High Queen: She is the ruler of the forest.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: The death of her son caused her to sink into depression.

Other Antagonists

Animals that eat or terrorize the mice.

    Predators

  • Predators Are Mean: All the predators are either trying to eat the heroes or the other animals of the forest.

Erebus

Species: Timberwolf

A mysterious wolf prowls the woods near the neighborhood houses. It watches and waits. Erebus and his pack didn't dare to enter the neighborhood for fear of its humans, but now that the humans are gone...

  • Bad Boss: Has no qualms of killing his own pack mates when they are injured or weak.
  • Big Bad: He is the true main antagonist of the story. Bonus points for being a Big Bad Wolf.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He is this in spades. He makes stabs at this from time to time, but the small matter of his bloodcurdling insanity gets in the way.
  • God of Evil: Erebus pulls this off effortlessly. He even has a raven death cult worshipping him, and his more normal packmates do not dare go against him - even to the point of devouring one of their own.
  • Savage Wolves: A leader of a pack of wolves, and a ruthless, murderous one at that.
  • Villain Decay: As the comic goes on, Erebus undergoes this, looking more and more like an ordinary wolf rather then the outright Animalistic Abomination of before. After the second book, his own pack starts openly criticizing him. He takes it as well as you'd expect.

Nemesis

Species: Harris Hawk

A Harris's hawk silently glides through the mists in search of prey for her chicks. As the mice have ranged farther out in the open in search of food, the neighborhood has become her favorite hunting ground.

  • Animals Not to Scale: She is the size of an eagle.
  • Brutal Bird of Prey: She tries to eat Pict in her first appearance.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: She returns in Chapter 9 after being absent since Chapter 3. She ends up saving Pict by abducting and presumably killing Resher, the same way Nemesis abducted Pict when she was hiding in a birdhouse.
  • The Voiceless: She doesn't speak in her scenes, only screech.

Nyll

Species: Common Raven

Nyll is the leader of the mysterious ravens and head advisor to the king of the beavers. In return for food from the refugees' stores, the ravens act as the beavers’ eyes and ears in the forest and oversee the workers at the dam. Nyll is always in the presence of the king, and constantly complains of Arken's inability to finish the dam.

Secretly, Nyll and the ravens serve the wolves and work to sabotage the dam in order to bring about the “Great Feast”, a feast of carrion at the end of time that will begin when the wolves take over the forest.

Gorgon

Species: Northern Water Snake

Gorgon is a Northern Water Snake who makes her home in a plastic kiddie pool discarded by the humans. The cold water makes her sluggish, but she is still more than capable of hunting anything that crosses her path. The ravens, who view the snake as their pet, occasionally drop hapless creatures into the snake’s lair as a form of deranged entertainment. The snake has no idea why these ravens do this and thinks they are fools, but she tolerates them as long as they drop off food.
