Arahabaki

Pilot

    Hosomichi Kudo

The main character. He was saddled with a large amount of debt by his parents and had to work at an underground Host Club to get money. After the True Army attacks Kabukichō and his workplace is destroyed, Hosomichi's guarantor forces him to earn money by joining Arahabaki as their only pilot.


  • Blind Without 'Em: Everything looks blurry to him when he isn't wearing his glasses, which is a problem whenever he takes them off for his "host mode".
  • Closet Geek: He has been a fan of the tokusatsu anime Zaburn since he was a kid and still keeps its theme song as his ringtone, but is embarrassed to admit his geeky interest at first.
  • Disappeared Dad: His father fled shortly after the True Army's invasion, leaving Kudo with his debt. Kudo points out that he was a bit of a Jerkass to his family.
  • Falling into the Cockpit: When the True Army sets Kabukichō on fire, Hosomichi finds the collapsed Garanndoll and takes shelter inside its cockpit. Since he's the only one able to perfectly synchronize with the Battery Girls, he becomes the Garanndoll's pilot.
  • The Glasses Gotta Go: He takes his glasses off when gets into his "host mode" to make himself more attractive for women.
  • The Hero: He's the protagonist and pilot of La Résistance's Humongous Mecha.
  • Loony Friends Improve Your Personality: The Battery Girls' eccentric personalities and passionate interests help Hosomichi grow out of his cynical and pessimistic outlook.
  • Only Sane Man: Out of an organization consisting of a Hot-Blooded crew and his often drunk former boss desperate for money, Kudo is the only one who has his head on his shoulders. He does this as a reminder to not become like his dad.
  • Rebuilt Pedestal: Hosomichi forgot his passion for anime, especially Zaburn, after his father neglected and finally abandoned him because he was a Workaholic who devoted all his time to his creative work. Bonding with the Battery Girls and getting inspired by their passions, especially Rin's love for Zaburn, makes Hosomichi remember why he loved the fiction his father created.
  • Resigned to the Call: By his own admission, Hosomichi prefers not to get involved with any of goings on of the situation, instead wanting to pay off his debts. He really didn't want anything to do with Arahabaki and their fight against the True Army, but his workplace was destroyed during one of their battles. Since Munakata threatened to sell his organs if he didn't find a new job immediately, Hosomichi had no choice but to become the Garanndoll's pilot for the money.
  • Stepford Smiler: In the first episode, it's pointed out that Hosomichi is good at putting on fake smiles when serving his clients at the Host Club.

    Rin Akagi

Battery Girl for Shark 1. Because of her admiration for heroes, she values justice and unity.


  • Ascended Fangirl: She has been a big superhero anime fan since she was a child and thanks to her passion for heroism, she joins Arahabaki to be the power source and co-pilot of their Garanndoll.
  • Blue Is Heroic: She's the Battery Girl with the biggest desire to be a hero of justice and her Shark 1 is blue. Shark 1 later changes to red in its new mode inspired by the red Zaburn mecha from the cancelled second season.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Her short hair reflects her tomboyish personality.
  • Cosplay Otaku Girl: When she gets inside the Garanndoll, Rin puts on a Sensual Spandex body suit inspired by her favorite anime hero Zaburn. Hosomichi at first thinks it's a real pilot suit, but Rin actually just likes doing cosplay.
  • Fiery Redhead: She's a very passionate and enthusiastic redhead.
  • Heroic BSoD: At the end of Episode 2, Rin literally shuts down inside the Garanndoll as a result of getting demotivated by Hosomichi not sharing her enthusiasm for heroism. She recovers in the next episode after Hosomichi joins her in battle while wearing a Zaburn cosplay.
  • Heroic RRoD: Whenever she uses up all her passion in a battle, she's left in a scatterbrained state until she recharges.
  • Hot-Blooded: Rin is constantly burning with passion for tokusatsu anime, which is a good thing for her to charge the Garanndoll.
  • Manic Pixie Dream Girl: Rin's passion for tokusatsu anime inspires Hosomichi to become a hero like those he admired as a child.
  • Nice Girl: She's friendly and outgoing.
  • Otaku: She's a big fan of tokusatsu anime, especially Zaburn.
  • Sensual Spandex: When she gets inside the Garanndoll, Rin wears a very skintight full-body suit.

    Yuki Aoba

Battery Girl for Rabbit 2. She is the only remaining underground idol of Rabbit Foot, with the other members having been arrested by the True Army. She's kidnapped and recruited


  • Attack Drone: In Episode 12, it's shown that Rabbit 2 can unleash drones that look like stuffed bunnies.
  • Badass Adorable: All the Battery Girls count, but Yuki stands out for being a cute idol who makes the Garanndoll take the form of a pink bunny to kick ass.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She acts like a sugary sweet pop idol in public, but is very bad-mouthed and bossy in private.
  • Bunnies for Cuteness: Yuki makes the Garanndoll take the shape of a bunny because of the cute and lovable image she wants to project as an idol.
  • Cute Bruiser: Her Rabbit 2 looks like an adorable bunny, but it can punch hard and fast.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She's a cutesy idol with pigtails tied at both sides of her head.
  • Glasses-and-Ponytail Coverup: In Episode 5, she briefly quits being an idol and works as a convenience store clerk with just a ponytail and glasses as her cover.
  • Idol Singer: She was originally part of an underground idol group, but all of the other members were arrested by the True Army. Arahabaki recruits her as a Battery Girl because of the passion that she inspires in her fans.
  • In-Series Nickname: She's nicknamed "Yuki-rin" by her fans.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Yuki is self-centered, vain, and abrasive, but she's an idol because she genuinely wants to bring hope and dreams for people.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: She wears her pink frilly idol dress as her combat attire when going into battle inside the Garanndoll.
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: Yuki is a popular Idol Singer with tons of fans even within Arahabaki, but away from the public's eyes, she's mean, haughty, and demanding of her "manager" Hosomichi who she treats like a servant. She also uses alternate accounts to attack her anti-fans online. However, she really loves being an idol to make her fans happy and fights the True Army to defend the idols' rights to perform.

    Misa Kuroki

Battery Girl for Cat 3. Also known as the genius hacker "WerdNya".


  • Animal-Eared Headband: Her headphones have cat ears.
  • Berserk Button: When Hosomichi opens the cardboard box where she's hiding, Misa punches him and attacks him with a stun gun.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: She starts to become friends with Hosomichi after he beats her in a video game.
  • Gamer Chick: She loves video games because her father used to play them with her.
  • Headphones Equal Isolation: Her cat-eared headphones reflect her status as a Hikikomori.
  • Hikikomori: Before Arahabaki recruited her (or rather, kidnapped her), Misa lived shut off from the outside world and never left her house because her father's disappearance made her too scared to go out.
  • Minor Living Alone: After her father disappeared one day, Misa had to fend for herself by becoming a hacker and living off deliveries until Arahabaki recruited her by force.
  • Nervous Tics: She says "Meow" whenever she's nervous or scared.
  • Pointless Band-Aid: She has a band-aid on her left knee, despite showing no indication of being injured.
  • Shrinking Violet: She gets shy and anxious around people because of the time she spent as a Hikikomori. When she joins the team, she doesn't even introduce herself and hides inside a cardboard box.
  • The Smart Girl: As a hacker, she's well-versed in digital gadgets.
  • Token Mini-Moe: She's the youngest and smallest of the Battery Girls.

Commanders

    Nastassja Tanaka

The mysterious top commander of Arahabaki, who always wears a mascot costume.


  • Big Good: The leader of Arahabaki.
  • Phosphor-Essence: For some reason, Tanaka's actual body is always surrounded by a glowing aura.
  • Rebel Leader: Tanaka is the top leader of Arahabaki, the only armed force opposing the True Army's attempts of eliminating all Otaku culture and entertainment from Japan.
  • Older Than They Look: Outside of her costume, Tanaka looks like a little girl, but Mimi affirms that she's much older than she appears.
  • Samus Is a Girl: In Episode 10, it turns out that Tanaka is a girl.
  • The Voiceless: Tanaka never speaks until she takes off her costume.

    Balzac Yamada

The second-in-command of Arahabaki.


  • Color Failure: He goes grayscale when Mimi reveals the real reason behind her causing the Garanndoll to go berserk was Yamada's insensitivity towards her romantic feelings for him.
  • Eyes Out of Sight: He wears sunglasses to cover his eyes at all times. His eyes are finally shown in Episode 12.
  • Expy: It doesn't take much to see that he's an expy of Kamina, in both look and over-the-top, loud character and mannerisms.
  • Ignore the Fanservice: He has no reaction to seeing Rin, Yuki, and Mimi naked in the bath because he's only interested in 2D girls.
  • Large Ham: Tends to say things out loud, even when he's in Akihabara.
  • My Greatest Failure: He was the Garanndoll pilot who accidentally caused the explosion that wiped out the Asakusabashi district because he transmutated the passion of the Battery Girl inside the machine. He regrets his actions and warns Hosomichi to not make the same mistake he did.
  • Number Two: He's the second leader of Arahabaki, right after Tanaka.
  • Sunglasses at Night: He never takes off his sunglasses, even at night. He says he won't remove them because of what happened the day he accidentally caused the explosion in Asakusabashi.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Ten years ago, Yamada nervously turned down Mimi's feelings for him when they were riding the Garanndoll. This resulted in the Asakusabashi district being blown again by an explosion.
  • Voice for the Voiceless: Tanaka only communicates through whispering in Yamada's ear and letting him convey the message.

    Mimi Kagurazaka

The mechanic in charge of the technology of Arahabaki.


  • Angst Nuke: She was the Battery Girl riding the Garanndoll when it went berserk and blew away the entire Asakusabashi district. Yamada thought the explosion was the result of the romantic attraction between him and Mimi, but Mimi reveals that it was really caused by Yamada making her pissed with his thoughtless rejection of her feelings.
  • Animal Motifs: She has a fox motif, as she used to wear a fox girl cosplay when riding the Garanndoll as a Battery Girl.
  • Cleavage Window: She wears dress with a large cleavage cutout.
  • Cosplay Otaku Girl: Mimi used to be a cosplay fan in her younger days.
  • The Engineer: She's responsible for the maintenance and new development of Grandoll, as well as taking care of the battery girls.
  • Labcoat of Science and Medicine: She wears a labcoat, denoting her role as a scientist and mechanic.

    Anjū Munakata

Hosomichi's guarantor. He presses Hosomichi to repay his debts at every opportunity, and even though he cooperates with Arahabaki, he was looking for money to be paid to Hosomichi as a pilot.


  • Loan Shark: Not him directly, but he gets regularly hounded on by them, and equally hounds Kudo into trying to get said money to repay them.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Outs Kudo as part of Arahabaki and where the group's base of operations is all while highly intoxicated.
  • Only in It for the Money: He decides to join the side of Arahabaki and forces Hosomichi to become their pilot, only because Tanaka promises a large money compensation for it.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: He and Kudo take the Garann to the True Army at the end of "Look at That! Turning the Tables (of Treachery)!" in the (presumably fruitless) attempt to get the debts paid off.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: In Episode 10, he persuades Hosomichi into betraying Arahabaki and selling their Garandoll to the True Army so they can rebuild their host club with the money. Fortunately, Hosomichi comes back after the Battery Girls are even more persuading.

True Army

  • The Four Gods: Akatsuki pilots the The Phoenix Ho'oh (representing the Vermilion Bird), Hayate pilots the White Wolf Hakuro (representing the White Tiger), Musashi pilots the Dragon Princess Ryuki (representing the Azure Dragon), and Yakumo pilots the Thousand Year Tortoise Banki (representing the Black Tortoise).
  • Heel–Face Turn: They join up with Arahabaki to go against the rest of the True Army, after their superiors decide to do the Colony Drop plan sooner than expected against Akatsuki's wishes.

    Akatsuki Shinonome

A colonel in the True Army. He is a man of action who has infiltrated Akihabara, and is highly trusted by his subordinates.


  • Affably Evil: He's fully intent on antagonizing and oppressing all Japanese who indulge in "idealistic fantasies", but he's very cordial and civilized all things considered.
  • Big Bad: The leader of the True Army branch stationed in "Real" Japan, and the primary threat against Akihabari.
  • Commissar Cap: His cap shows his military rank as a colonel.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: In Episode 9, Akatsuki infiltrates Akihabara and ends up having a casual chat with Hosomichi as both eat at a ramen shop, with neither of them knowing the other's true identity until the end of the episode.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He's a very androgynous and attractive guy with long black hair flowing down his back.
  • The One Guy: All of his subordinates are women.
  • You Have Failed Me: Gets this from his superiors after a string of failures. Instead of berating and disposing of him for someone else, they suggest that he use more drastic approaches to defeat them.

    Hayate Makami

A True Army officer from a samurai family. She dresses like a ninja.


  • Dark Action Girl: A kunoichi in the service of the True Army.
  • Dual Wielding: Her personal Garann, White Wolf Hakuro, dual wields Laser Blades.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: In Episode 3, Mimi provides a distraction for Hosomichi to get to Rin by telling Hayate that they need to have one last talk since he was going to kill Rin. Hayate agrees to it.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: In Episode 9, Hayate runs into Rin while infiltrating Akihabara. Since neither knows they're enemies, Rin shows Hayate around Akihabara and they eat kebabs together.
  • Ignored Enamored Underling: She's infatuated with her commander Akatsuki who doesn't seem to return or be aware of her feelings.
  • Laser Blade: Besides her Garann's laser katanas, Hayate wields a laser dagger.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: She wears an orange scarf around her neck, and is a Garan pilot under the service of the True Army.
  • Sexy Slit Dress: She wears a long skirt with slits showing off the sides of her legs.
  • Signature Headgear: She wears a hair accessory that looks like a shuriken, fitting into her ninja theme.
  • Stalker with a Crush: When out of the battlefield, she spends her time following her beloved Akatsuki like a shadow.
  • Undying Loyalty: Out of Akatsuki's subordinates, Hayate is the most fervently loyal to him.

    Musashi Sashigami

A sadistic soldier blessed with a wealthy family and great talents for battle.


  • Blood Knight: After getting her own Garran, he directly disobeys her commander's orders and goes to attack Arahabaki because she wants to start a battle right away.
  • Ojou: She's the daughter of a magnate.
  • Sociopathic Soldier: Musashi is brutal and sadistic even by the standards of the True Army.

    Yakumo Kamizuru

The chief mechanic of the True Army.


  • Antiquated Linguistics: She speaks an archaic dialect of Japanese.
  • Magical Floating Shawl: Yakumo excels in both magical and scientific fields by being a talented mechanic descended from onmyoji. She dresses like a miko with a pink hagoromo levitating around her.
  • Token Mini-Moe: She's short and flat-chested, making her the youngest-looking member of Akatsuki's faction.
