Characters of the fanfic Renegade. So far, there aren't any major OCs, but the canonical characters have undergone several changes.

Global Defense Initiative

Commander Shepard

A female biotic Commando with the Colonist origin and both the War Hero and Sole Survivor backgrounds. Her Paragon/Renegade status is still unclear.

  • Action Girl
  • Action Survivor: From Akuze.
  • An Arm and a Leg: In Chapter 12, Tali has to cut off her arm to save her from a Scrin Corrupter.
  • Commander Badass
  • Cyborg: After Chapter 12, Her left arm and spine are replaced by cybernetic augments.
  • Determinator: When she loses her arm, it doesn't really even slow her down. She actually has to stop for a moment to remember that her arm is missing when she's running down the hallway.
    • Heroic RRoD: She keeps herself going through a combination adrenalin, focus, a little berserking, and shear willpower... plus combat drugs. A LOT of them. She flat-lines after taking a blast from a Scrin Battlemind, but she caused enough damage to it that her teammates were able to finish it off and get her e-vac'd; saving her life.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: When she gets her new mechanical arm, Shepard is able to project a powerful, one-directional biotic shield.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Shepard is good at pressing people's buttons and getting them to reveal information they're trying to hide.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Against slavers after Elysium, per the Sole Survivor background. When it's explained that she took on a ship full of batarian slavers single-handed ( the cover story, since Nod actually destroyed them), nobody objects.
  • Scars Are Forever: Shepard's face is seriously messed up after a close encounter with Scrin buzzers on Akuze.
  • Shrug of God: Shepard's appearance is deliberately kept vague, allowing the reader to project whatever image they want onto her face.
  • Touched by Vorlons: By interfacing with the Tacitus, which means that she's adapting to her cybernetics absurdly fast, as well as letting her activate and control Prothean technology.
  • Why Did It Have To Be Scrin?: Thanks to her encounter on Akuze, the Scrin unnerve Shepard to the point that she'll start shouting at them in anger or terror while fighting them.

Lieutenant Kaidan Alenko

A Tiberium mutant and biotic serving alongside Shepard.

  • Big Damn Heroes
  • Combo Platter Powers: A Tiberium mutant and a biotic? Pity his enemies.
  • Super-Strength: being a Tiberium mutant, Kaidan has enormous physical power. He is able to hold a closing hydraulic door open with brute strength, and with a bit of help from his biotics, chuck a two-ton Mini-Mecha through the air.

Lieutenant Jacob Taylor

A GDI Zone Marine on Eden Prime who joins the Normandy's crew after the geth and Scrin attack.

  • Powered Armor: He's a Zone specialist, and thus wears the current generation of GDI Zone Trooper armor.

Gunnery Chief Ashley Williams

As in the original timeline, stationed on Eden Prime. Only this time, she's a Zone Marine. Word of God has confirmed that she and Jacob will permanently be switching places in the storyline.

Admiral Nick "Havoc" Parker V

Descendant of Nick "Havoc" Parker, legendary GDI commando and consummate fan of explosions and violence. Head of GDI Special Operations.

Lieutenant Anastacia Telfair

An Orca pilot on the GDS Kursk who provides air cover during the attack on the GDI Embassy and later is transferred to the GDS Normandy. Word of God is that she is the descendant of Sandra Telfair from Tiberium Wars.

  • Ace Pilot: With the attitude to back it up.
  • Badass Boast: When told that they're up against a superior number of fighters, four frigates, and a cruiser with just the Normandy and four Orcas:
Telfair: They might as well just blow themselves up, save us the trouble.
  • Generation Xerox: Very closely resembles her ancestor, with the exception that she has blue eyes and blonde streaks in her hair.

Citadel

Nihlus

A turian Spectre who accompanied the Normandy to Eden Prime.

  • Big Damn Heroes: As a result of not being Doomed by Canon, he's able to use his Spectre authorization to push the GDI gunships through Citadel security to help fend off the Scrin attack.
  • Doomed by Canon: Subverted so far - Nihlus is still alive.

Garrus Vakarian

A Citadel Spectre, investigating the deaths of a group of quarians in the Wards.

  • Big Damn Heroes: Saves Shepard and Anderson from some Mercs.
  • Cowboy Cop: Even more so than in canon. Sparatus specifically assigns him to act as the Spectre agent for the Normandy because he wants Garrus to kill Saren by whatever means possible.
  • Crazy Is Cool: In-Universe. In the author's own words, "An unholy fusion of Jack Bauer and the Kool Aid Man." Even the Scrin think he's crazy, and attach a "Qualifier: Insane" tag to his designation.
  • Deadpan Snarker: His reaction to a Battlemind blasting down a wall to announce its presence is to comment that its stealing his moves.
  • Dynamic Entry: His whole schtick. If there's a wall, he'll knock it down.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Garrus ended up being a Spectre in this timeline as a result of this. GDI's existence caused the Citadel to expand the number of Spectres, and Garrus took the opportunity when it came up to join after spending only a year in C-Sec. As a result, he doesn't have the restraint that would have been ingrained in him, leading to him being excessively violent and over-the-top when it comes to his job.
  • Guns Akimbo: Dual-wielding Werewolf submachineguns to take on Scrin.
  • Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique: Kneecaps!
  • No Kill Like Over Kill: Overkill?
  • There Was a Door: In his own words:
"I've yet to encounter a potentially dangerous situation that can't be defused by smashing through a wall."
    • His behavior suggests that Garrus simply does not know how to use a door. He can only enter through a wall.
  • Unflinching Walk: Subverted. He wants to do one, but he thinks its unprofessional. Though he ends up doing a variant of it when fighting the Battlemind, where he unflinchingly moves between cars being flung by it while lining up a shot.

Brotherhood of Nod

Kane

The long-dead leader of the Brotherhood of Nod. As of the fifth chapter, he's back - again, and apparently has an interest in Shepard. Apparently he knows at least something about the Reapers, but what he's really up to and what exactly he knows is unclear.
  • Big Good: Starting to look like it. At the very least, he actually manages to indirectly that GDI and the Citadel into cooperating against Saren, and warns Shepard about the Reapers.
    • Gets a bit more ambiguous with the "Ghosts" interlude, considering that Shepard's Tacitus dream-vision involves a Prothean figure labeling something closely resembling Kane as the "enemy."
  • The Chessmaster: He even compares Shepard to a pawn in a chess game. It's a lie. Kane has been out of touch with the galaxy for thousands of years and is scrambling to get information and establish a network now that he is outside of the "closed system" that was Earth, and he is desperate to figure out what's going on. All the indications that Nod is everywhere and he is in complete control are smoke and mirrors.
    • Its up in the air as to what Nod's resources are, exactly, considering they're able to build something as huge as Temple Prime without anyone seeing it coming.
  • Cool Starship: Temple Prime.
  • Dark Messiah: Well, he is Kane...
  • Large Ham: His grand entrance involves the holo-projection rig in the Council chamber and his fan-favorite line "you can't kill the Messiah".

Miranda Lawson

An agent of the Brotherhood of Nod. Aids Shepard at Elysium and appears to be one of Kane's trusted assistants.

  • Author Appeal: As the author put it, "Miranda + Black Nod Catsuit = VICTORY!"
  • Cyborg: Has a form of subtle, "nanoweave" cybernetics that give her abilities like sensor transparency, improved aiming, and improved mobility.
  • Heroic BSoD: Has a minor one that Kane has to shake her out of as a result of her nearly getting killed by a pair of Scrin Intruders.
  • Number Two: To Kane.
  • Phlebotinum Rebel: As per her canon self.
  • Spy Catsuit: In her first appearance. In later appearances, she's wearing Nod combat armor.

Quarian Migrant Fleet

Tali'Zorah vas Neema

Quarian engineer who was part of a team that was trying to bring critical evidence regarding Saren's activities to a contact on the Citadel. Pay attention to her full name - it not being "nar Rayya" is intentional.

  • Adaptational Badass: Tali was still badass in her own way in canon, but she's a hell of a lot more dangerous in this fic. Between her cloak, her gadgets, and Nod laser weapons, she's surprisingly badass.
  • Break the Cutie: Even sooner than in canon. Nearly the entire team that was sent with her to the Citadel was killed, with the sole exception of Kal'Reegar. As a result, she's determined to rescue him, and refuses to leave Shepard behind even as a Corrupter is bearing down on them. Then she gets a double whammy in the next chapter, when it looks like Kal'Reegar and then Shepard are killed by the Battlemind.
  • Damsel in Distress: Inverted. In this timeline, she's rescuing Kal'Reegar.
  • Energy Weapon: Armed with Nod-supplied laser weapons.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Even moreso than in canon. She can even modify her omnitool to generate omniblades in mid-combat, when it never had that functionality before, and later jury-rigs it on the fly to spray plasma hot enough to burn down a Scrin Ravager.
  • Invisibility Cloak
  • Shoot the Dog: Cutting off Shepard's arm to save her.
  • Spy Catsuit: Her suit is a combination of this and a Latex Space Suit.
  • Stealth Expert: Coupled with her gadgets, she's pretty much the quarian equivalent of Sam Fisher.

Kal'Reegar

A quarian Migrant Fleet Marine assigned to escort Tali on the Citadel. Captured in an ambush, he has to be rescued, but proves more than able to hold his own.

  • Big Damn Heroes: "Then Kal’Reegar came around the corner opposite the Scrin, having gained half his bodyweight in gun."
  • BFG: The Multibarreled Assault Weapons System.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: Is assigned to bodyguard Tali after the GDI Embassy is attacked. She is not pleased.
  • Made of Iron: Nope, he's not letting those interrogation drugs stop him from taking up a weapon and getting ready to kick some ass.
    • He then tanks a direct kinetic attack from a Scrin Battlemind. Note that this is a weapon that is regularly blasting apart walls and killing soldiers in Zone armor.
  • Planet of Hats: Averted. When people assume that as a Quarian, he hacked the door, he reveals that he just flash-forged some explosives and blew it up.
  • Stupid Sacrifice: Tali berates him for being fully prepared to draw off enemy fire to let her escape, when the entire reason they're pinned down is because she came to rescue him.

Phoenix

Locke

GDI Commando during the Shanxi War who fought the turians and asari commando teams, and was a major character in Eagle's Fall. As of the Renegade timeframe he is still alive, but has gone rogue and joined the Phoenix organization.

  • Beware the Quiet Ones: To a mild extent. In both Eagle's Fall and Renegade, it's noted that his footsteps are balanced in such a way that he doesn't make noise when he walks.
  • The Big Guy: He's described as being as tall as a Zone Trooper, minus the armor.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Locke never loses his cool in combat.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Blinding him with ECM does not prevent him from putting bullets into your center mass.
  • Lightning Bruiser: For his size, he moves fast. As in, being able to dodge out of the way and return fire in the time it takes a laser beam to burn halfway through his helmet's armor. And he does it in armor that makes him even taller than a Zone Trooper.
  • Screw Destiny: He actively defies Marked commandos' probability calculators. Even with Locke armed with nothing but half a combat knife and a sidearm, the Marked quickly realize that their chances of successfully escaping are plummeting the longer they spend time in his company.
  • Torture Technician: In Eagle's Fall he tortures a Nod spy so brutally that the Marked commandos who rescue her have to give her a Mercy Kill.

Independent/Other

Liara T'Soni

An asari scientist studying a wrecked Prothean ship. Roped into the plot thanks to Saren becoming highly interested in what said ship is carrying.

  • Adventurer Archaeologist: By necessity, she knows how to fight and how to delve into dangerous ruins. The Hesano excavation is the first time she's had serious support.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Aside from being a competent fighter with powerful biotics, she has sufficient steel in her spine to stare down Wrex.

Grenck

A vorcha who specializes in engineering and explosives. Part of Liara's science team.

  • High-Class Glass: His monocle visor, taken with the other things mentioned below....
  • Stuff Blowing Up: A demo specialist, and he loves doing it.
  • You No Take Candle: Inverted; he adjusted his autotranslator so that it doesn't transmit his words in broken dialect. In fact, it actually gives him an upper-class tone that to humans sounds British.

Zaeed Massani

Human mercenary hired by the Shadow Broker to deal with Fist and recover the data possessed by Tali's group.

Urdnot Wrex

A mercenary serving on Eden Prime, and later on the Prothean wreck being explored by Liara's science team.

  • Better to Die than Be Killed: Initially opts to go out in a blaze of glory when he realizes the situation on Hesano is hopeless, until Liara stands her ground and forces him to protect the scientists in a last stand.
  • Blood Knight: Takes an enormous amount of pleasure in combat, as with most krogan.
  • Metronomic Man Mashing: Does this with a Scrin Intruder, after blowing its head off with a shotgun.
