Due to sprite limitations, it should be mentioned that the characters use Palette Swap (or not) of original character of Pokémon Silver. Therefore, Expy and Palette Swap should not be mentioned except particular case.

    Main Characters 

Cactus

The Hero of the game send by professor Moe to find the Elementals Orbs. Use a orange colored Blue sprite.
  • Kid Hero: Averted, he is 20 years old, and has just graduated from university.
  • Party in My Pocket: Cactus take this role...whith Oscar entering his body and lampshading this trope.
    Cactus: What?! Did you just walk inside me?
    Oscar: Huh? It's no big deal. Have you ever played Final Fantasy games? Side-characters often travel inside the main one, and only appear in some events.
  • Teen Genius: He is a graduate from the Capital University.
  • Thrown Down The Well: The Red Guardian attempts to entomb Cactus in a cave in one last attempt to stop him from taking the Elemental Orb. If Cactus doesn't have the escape rope...

Oscar

The Best Friend of Cactus who travel with the latter. Use a blue colored Silver sprite.
  • Big Damn Heroes : Downplayed. During the whole fight with Team Darkness, he just hide and watch before taking Cactus (who just have been attacked by Steelix) to Dr Frank. Cactus mention he wouldn't never make alive, if it was not for Oscar.
  • Out of Focus: After the event of North Suden, he doesn't make any apparition until the player talk to Ashlyn in her house (wich is an optional aparition, his next mandatory aparition is in Centralgate city : the last city of West Suden.

Ashlyn

A mysterious girl Cactus found in the Jungle. Use Erika sprite.
  • Damsel in Distress: She firstly seen to be attacked by an Arbok, who Cactus have to fight.

     Team Darkness 

In General

  • The Dreaded: Everyone in Suden are terrified of the sight of Team Darkness. The Professor refers to them as dangerous criminals.

Maxime

"...This was way too easy."
  • Affably Evil: Very polite with his subordinates and business partners.
  • Badass Cape: Aquires one three years after creating Team Darkness.
  • Big Bad: The main villain of Pokemon Dark Energy, the leader of the evil organization that are tracking down the Elemental Orbs, and the orders to kidnap Professor Moe came from him. He also possesses one of the Elemental Orbs, so a confrontation between him and the player is inevitable...
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: 3 years ago, he appears rather unremarkable, apart from some magic. Years later, he is the boss of a very feared and capable organization.
  • The Leader: He is the founder and leader of Team Darkness.
  • More than Mind Control: Implied to have subtly influence Mr. Burton when he initially refuses Maxime.

Rosalyn

  • The Ace: One of the most powerful trainers in the world, and is the reason why she chose to work for Team Darkness. She quickly became the General of Team Darkness.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: She is powerful enough to easily defeat one of the strongest gym leaders, and she states that she used her talents to climb up the ranks of Team Darkness.
  • The Battle Didn't Count : While her battle in Granaldo was technicaly supposed be an Hopeless Boss Fight (her pokemons does being overlevelled), and you don't Black out if you lose. She only use 4 pokemons and is beatable. Justified because she doesn't use her full team, as she just wanted to test Cactus.
  • The Dragon: To Maxime, as the General of Team Darkness.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Not fond of the Captain's brutal tactics.
  • Expy: Of Clair.
  • Victory Is Boring: She considers her status as a powerful trainer, that fights are no longer fulfilling. It is a major reason why she joined up with Team Darkness as a very high ranking member.

Captain

"Steelix, attack!"
  • The Brute: A vicious field officer of Team Darkness, who can unleash a huge, powerful Steelix to attack trainers and their Pokemon.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Orders his Steelix to attack Cactus outright, in an attempt to kill him, after the battle. Double with Kick Them While They Are Down if you lose and Sore Loser if you win
  • Expy: Of Lt. Surge.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Known only as the Captain.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: The player's first encounter with the Captain has him go up against an overleveled Steelix (and an Hyper Potion), where you are meant to lose. Even if you manage to beat him, he'll order his Steelix to attack the trainer.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: It is implied that he has more pokemon than Steelix, and much more powerful than expected.
  • Jerkass: He work for Team Darkness, try to kill Cactus and, (on rocky village), doesn't pay his beers
  • Knight of Cerebus : The first true treat encountered in the adventure.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: The moment Sage Neal, one of the most powerful trainers in Suden, defends the player from the Captain, the Captain orders his crew to retreat, and leaves.
  • Mook Lieutenant: A high ranking member of Team Darkness, just below the General.
  • Tail Slap: Steelix has Iron Tail, and he severely wounds the player with this move.
  • This Cannot Be!! : If you beat him during the first battle.
    Captain: Imposible ! You weren't supposed to win.
  • Signature Mon: Steelix, which he uses to attack the player in battle and outside.
  • Wham Line: "We also kidnapped Professor Moe."

Grunts

  • Establishing Character Moment: The Grunt that is in the shop threatens the shopkeeper, with no music playing, leaving an ominous atmosphere. This is Team Darkness.
  • Jerkass: Threatening civilians, kidnapping, and even plotting to steal Pokemon from a farm don't make them pleasant. Their idea of fun involves Miltank tipping.
  • Kick the Dog: Tries to perform cow-tipping with a Miltank Farm.

Mr. Burton

  • Mysterious Backer: Maxime comes to him for a deal, to create a large organization dedicated to finding the Elemental Orbs.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He is only seen at the very beginning of the game, accepting a deal from Maxime to fund an organization searching for the orbs. 3 years later, Team Darkness is a powerful organization feared in Suden.

     Dark Energy Villains 

The Guardians

The five guardians charged to protect the elementals Orbs at all cost.
  • Ax-Crazy: They are vicious towards anyone they perceive as a trespasser, and will pull no punches in destroying the threat, even outright implied to kill Cactus if he loses or doesn't have the escape rope...
  • Bad Vibrations: The Green Guardian when he approaches the Scientists inspecting the Elemental Orb.
  • Buried Alive: The Red Guardian tries to collapse the cave to trap and crush Cactus inside.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: Each Guardian has a different color from the energy they emanate. The Elemental Orbs they protect matches their color.
  • Energy Beings: They are beings made of Dark Energy.
  • Humanoid Abomination: They take the shape of a trainer, and are emanating energy and darkness, with pupiless eyes.
  • Knight of Cerebus: They are the most imposing enemies in the entire game; stakes are elevated once the player encounters one of these beings. There is no levity or humanizing elements to lessen their sheer ruthlessness. As a gameplay example, they place the player in situations where if they make a mistake, they can face a non-standard game over.
  • Macguffin Guardian: They defend the Elemental Orbs from intruders.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: They have powerful teams, with full intent to kill. If that's not enough, some can find other ways to destroy intruders.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: They have unique sprites compared to other trainers, considering they are ancient guardians.
  • Non-Standard Game Over: In one case, the Green Guardian defeats the player, the game is ended.
  • The Quiet One: The Green Guardian doesn't say anything except Visible Silence.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: The Red Guardian has red eyes, and tries to collapse the cave with the Player trapped inside.
  • The Unfought: The guardian of the area 104, due to have been already beaten by the captain.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: Despite the title Pokemon Dark Energy, the general atmosphere of the game is nothing too serious, (with some exceptions, like the arrival of the Captain). Until the player encounters the Guardians, who fully intends to kill whoever encounters them if they try to take the Elemental Orbs.

Criminal Mastermind

The boss of Yellowleaf town's thief. Use Blaine sprite.

Other Crooks

Super Onix

Scientist: "The Beast is closing in..."
The Exceptional Pokemon. An abnormally large Onix that is feared by the inhabitants of Argent Central.
  • Achilles' Heel: Despite being so large, and having immensely higher base stats, it still has the two 4x weaknesses to Grass and Water.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: This Onix is massive even by regular standards of Onix, and it is very aggressive.
  • Ax-Crazy: During its rampage, it almost killed a Scientist onscreen, and re-shaped the landscape.
  • Broken Bridge: It attacks with earthquakes, causing the route to be blocked off by massive rocks.
  • The Dreaded: The townsfolk are really terrified of this particular Onix, and the instant it appears, everyone runs for their lives.
  • The Giant: Regular Onix are already massive. Super Onix is much longer and heavier than a STEELIX.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: This can cause earthquakes indiscriminately, and its rage makes Gyarados look pleasant.
  • Olympus Mons: The Pokedex actually classifies this as a Legendary Pokemon.

     Gym Leaders 

Ritch

The Ground type Gym Leader of the Capital. Use a recolored Brock sprite.

Brady

The Grass type Gym Leader of Little Stone. Use a recolored Whitney sprite.

Arnold

The Flying type Gym Leader of Highland Town. Use a recolored Price sprite.

Issac

The Fighting type Gym Leader of Greenwood Town. Use Bruno sprite.
  • Making a Splash : His Poliwrath
  • Shock and Awe : His Pikachu.
  • Signature Mon: Machamp, who shows up in the overworld sprite as well. It has Ancient Power as its special move.
  • SNK Boss: At first his team starts off with Machoke, Pikachu, and Primeape. Then he states that he's done warming up, and unleashes 2 much higher leveled fighting types with Powerful Moves.
    • As it was mandatory to beat him in his warm-up fight in older version, the 'true' fight was an Hopeless Boss Fight.

Sapphire

The Water type Gym Leader of Argent Central. Use a recolored Bugsy sprite.
  • Bait-and-Switch: The Water type gym trainers imply that Sapphire hands out the Surf HM when you beat her... until she gives out a Magnet.
  • Making a Splash: She use Water type Pokemon.
  • Signature Mon: Blastoise with Magnitude.
  • Undesirable Prize: A Magnet. Her reaction imply she normaly give no prize and only did it because Cactus ask her.

Pierce

The Electric type Gym Leader of Brightbulb City. Use a recolored Morty sprite.

Ichirou

The Ghost/Dark type Gym Leader of Centralgate City. Use a recolored Koga sprite.

Raven

The Gym Leader of Granaldo City. Use a recolored Blue sprite.

     Grand Tower 

Master Sage Neal

The 5th and strongest sage of the Grand Tower.
  • The Ace: The Grand Tower master of the sages is so powerful, even the Captain retreats.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: He is the Master of the Grand Tower, and one of the highest leveled trainers in the game, far stronger than the 4 sages before him.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Rescues the Milky Village and the Player from Team Darkness, just before the Captain unleashes his true power.
  • Graceful Loser
  • Took a Level in Badass: After being defeat by Cactus.

Sage Red

The 4th sage of the Grand Tower.

Sage Blue

The 3rd sage of the Grand Tower.
  • Badass Boast
    Blue: I've heard about you from my master. He believe that one day, you'll arrive to take him on. But you won't get to challenge him. I will stop you here!
  • Graceful Loser: See Worthy Opponent below. He give Cactus the Exp Share which is the best reward of all the trial.
  • Took a Level in Badass: After Cactus defeat Neal.
  • Underestimating Badassery: He doesn't show it, but he will mention when you beat him.
  • Worthy Opponent: After being beaten, he oppenly recognize Cactus as great opponent and appologize for underestimating him.
    • After beating Neal, he declare that's an honor to see him again and, if you beat him again, will predict you will being able to defeat Red (despite warning you of the later during the first encounter).
  • The Worf Effect: He was beaten by Raven, 3 years before the events of Dark Energy.

Sage Green

The 2nd sage of the Grand Tower.

Sage Orange

The 1st sage of the Grand Tower.

     Other Characters 

Professor Moe

  • Distressed Dude: He gets kidnapped by Team Darkness once the player reaches Dr. Franks house.
  • Expy: Of Professor Oak.
  • Mr. Exposition: Gives the history of Suden in the intro, and gives the details of the Mission to Cactus.
  • The Professor: A professor in a Pokemon University.

Camper Roland

  • Boss in Mook's Clothing: He looks like an ordinary camper, but has unique boss music, and his lineup gets more and more powerful as you face him. This is especially true when he shows up at Professor Joke's lab
  • The Rival: To Cactus, a classmate from university who challenges Cactus whenever their paths cross.
  • They Look Like Everyone Else: He bears a near identical resemblance to the campers, only with a blue spriting and unique battle music. The beginner trainer in Professor Joke's lab? That's him

Wizard Jin

  • Wizards and Witches : Maybe ? While he is impliying being one, the NPC outside his cave, say he never saw him cast any Spell.
