What happens if you mix a traditional Pokemon game with an RPG such as Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger? The answer is right in front of you...

Pokémon Dark Energy is a ROM hack of Pokémon Silver made by Miksy91. The gameplay focuses on story; instead of just collecting Pokemon, Badges, and being Champion.

Year 1571, and it's been around a thousand years since the great war, The Crisis, ended in Suden. The world has had a long lasting peace, but now, shady character Maxime has founded an organization for his mysterious plans - to collect magical Elemental Orbs that no one else seems to know about.

A year later, archaeologists, working for the university of The Capital, discover an interesting writing in Rocky Mountain. The writing describes the same Elemental Orbs Maxime had already known about. One thing leads to another, and eventually, the main character and his classmate end up journeying to the Rocky Mountain in order to help the university do research on the Elemental Orbs. Little did they know, their simple task was yet to become an epic, and hazardous adventure..

The game is on its fifth beta here.

Tropes used in Pokémon Dark Energy:

  • 100% Completion: There are Sidequests to complete in the game, that can net you rewards like a rare item, or even rare Pokemon. They take more precedence, as there are no badges in the game to collect, but plot items to progress.
  • Action Bomb: Koffing, Weezing, Electrode, are present in plot battles, and can come out of nowhere.
  • Big Bad: Maxime, the founder and leader of the evil organization called Team Darkness, who kickstart the plot searching for the Elemental Orbs, which led to Professor Moe being kidnapped.
  • Boss in Mook's Clothing: Camper Roland looks like any other Camper. Justified because he is one of the Main Character's classmates, and a potential rival. Even has the GSC Rival Theme. This comes heavily into play when he shows up in Professor Joke's lab.
  • The Brute: Darkness Captain is a high ranking enforcer of Team Darkness, who is more than willing to sic an overleveled Steelix on Pokemon Trainers, even have it attack them directly.
  • The Computer Is a Cheating Bastard: There is an illegally evolved Weezing on one of the Team Darkness grunts.
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: You might think leveling Magikarp up to level 20 would immediately net you a Gyarados, but it turns out it evolves by Water Stone, which you only get once you reach a certain town.
    • There no indication whatsoever that the drawers you can found insides houses (a decoration element in the original game) contain in Dark energy, money or in one occurence a page from the Eevee book ! Same can be said for the object cupboard in the thief hideout.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: The Green Guardian, who tries to eliminate the archeologists and the player. It is also the point in the game where non-standard game over is present.
  • Disc-One Final Dungeon: Granaldo Cave, where meet up with scientist discovering the green elemental orb, only to be confronted by one of the Guardians.
  • Disc-One Nuke: Some rare, but very expensive Pokemon prizes from the Battle Simulators, can qualify as this.
  • Guide Dang It!: While unused, the method to obain Mew in beta 4 was this : you have to prove to be a true master, something who could have only been acomplished by being able to reach the zone more faster. How doing this ? Buying the most expensive prize of the battle simulator (yes, the second one with question mark...) for reseting the total time of the game.
    • The Eevee Book page you originaly recovered from beating Neals, is now replacing the battle prize described above.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: The first encounter with the Team Darkness Captain is meant to be an unwinnable battle, as he is far overleveled compared to the grunts, and beating him (which is supposed to be impossible) still results in him using his Steelix to strike you down.
  • Mook Lieutenant: The Captain of Team Darkness
  • Mythology Gag: As an Onix grows older, its shape becomes smoother and much darker colored. There is an abnormally large Onix, known as the Super Onix, that is shaded differently from the usual. Looking at the Pokedex, it is more than twice as long, and almost three times as heavy.
  • Olympus Mons: Super Onix is classified as a Legendary Pokemon, because it is unusually large, and aggressive. It's base stats are roughly doubled.
  • Palette Swap: Machamp, and a few other Pokemon like Skarmory have different colored Pokemon Silver Sprites.
  • Villain Forgot to Level Grind: Averted by the Darkness Grunts; even after you beat them the first time, they wised up and evolved some of their Pokemon, and leveled up slightly. On the other hand, the Captain plays this straight.
