If it's with you, then I would love to see it.

The main character of the story who we meet at the start as an old man. A cave runner from a nation called East Ocean belonging to 9th clan of the East Ocean Lumen Alliance. As a young boy, he met Kay Volan who became his guardian in place of his dead mother, swearing to one day become head of his clan and protect everyone in it. Unfortunately, during an excavation competition he was set up and subsequently exiled. Now, he travels with Kay to find lumen caves, thereby restoring his and his clan's honor. It is during these travels that he meets Eda.

  • All-Loving Hero: Downplayed, but he's a rather forgiving individual, both trying to help Bones even though the man nearly killed him and Kay and currently has a bounty out for him and being reluctant to kill the assassin after his life, due to said assassin technically being family.
  • All of the Other Reindeer:
    • He was heavily bullied by the other kids of his clan when he was younger. In the present, they're still far from fond of him, especially given his position as first in line and the one who cost them their caves.
    • To a much lesser extent, he's not wholly welcome in Thousand Peaks, which can be wary of outsiders and mildly hostile towards those from East Ocean specifically.
  • Blue Blood: He is of noble blood and often has to deal with his clan's constant infighting.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: To what degree will depend on player choices, but out of all the main characters, he's usually the one advocating for helping people in need, and Eda notes that he's always sticking his nose into others' business. It's what kicks off the main plot, as he attempts to save Eda, a complete stranger.
  • Conflicting Loyalty: He subverts this from his perspective, since when he says he'll help Eda find her master first, he means it. However, it's a point of tension for everyone else, who wonder when he's going to leave for his clan and hurt Eda in the process. When his clan does send a message to him stating that they'll welcome him back, just as the group is pursuing a lead on Red, he can potentially inform Eda and Remi that he deleted the message and goes on ahead with them, even knowing the risks.
  • Declaration of Protection: He makes one to Eda, feeling that he owes her his life. She's not shy about pointing out that Jun's the one who tends to get himself nearly killed.
  • Determinator: While a hothead, he also someone far tougher and determined than what you might first gleam from him. Apparently it is a trait of all nobles, not buckling for a second when exposed to a Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique.
  • The Exile: He was exiled from his clan and home system after an incredibly minor slight against the Emperor.
  • Guilt Complex: Frequently blames himself or worries that he made the wrong choice, to varying degrees of actual culpability. That we see the story through his lens as an old man doesn't help, as he's able to reflect even more on his regrets and what he wishes he could've prevented.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: He suffers from serious self worth issues as a result of things just never seeming to go his way. Whenever he tries his best, it always seems to find a way to blow up in his face.
  • Honor Before Reason: A lot of his hot-headed tendencies comes from how he usually can't let injustices or slights against his loved ones slide, even when it would be better to keep his mouth shut.
  • Idiot Hero: Not so much an idiot as horribly impulsive which often puts him into some quite sticky situations.
  • It Was a Gift: When he became first in line as heir, he was gifted with three items: his synthescepter (and thus he refuses to replace it); the blade Qianli, which he then gave to Kay (becoming a Tragic Keepsake when Kay dies); his ship Khun, which he's tragically forced to destroy at the start of the game to escape from Bones's base.
  • I Will Wait for You: After Eda disappears to Phoenix, he decides to wait a full 66 years for the comet to return in its orbit in order to meet Eda again.
  • Men Don't Cry: His mother instilled this mindset into him, given his potential future position as clan master. It's clearly a struggle for him to maintain, however, and eventually leads to Cathartic Crying in front of Eda when the tragedies accumulate.
  • My Greatest Failure:
    • Speaking against the Emperor, which caused his clan to lose their major caves.
    • His recklessness leads to Kay getting shot to protect him, which in time contributes to Kay's death—by the hands of an assassin after Jun, no less. It's telling that his Fatal Flaw of impulsiveness becomes less drastic after that point.
  • Naïve Newcomer: He's new to Thousand Peaks and needs much of its culture and mechanics explained to him.
  • Orphan's Ordeal: His mother's death left him alone and unloved until Kay came into his life, fueling his need to have a place to belong.
  • The Promise: He promises Eda that when Phoenix comes back, he'll be willing to put his life on pause and return to Thousand Peaks. When he made that promise, he meant that he'd go to Phoenix to look for Red with her; when he does return 66 years later, it's instead to find Eda herself.
  • Race-Name Basis: Only for a brief time, but both Remi and Bones initially refer to him as just "Oceaner" despite knowing his name. More than once he's also called "noble" by others; again, even when they know his name, giving it negative connotations or the impression of being distant as well as being a more indirect reference to how he's from East Ocean, as nobility is less prevalent in Thousand Peaks.
  • The Scapegoat: Though he did offend the Emperor, Kay points out that the Emperor was looking to seize their clan's caves anyway and simply took opportunity of Jun's blunder as a justification.
  • Supporting Protagonist: His personal struggles are as significant to the story as Eda's, but once the Red Chamber crew makes a major discovery, therefore publicly redeeming Jun, the main goal driving the plot is Eda's search for Red.
  • Walking Disaster Area: Jun has a remarkable knack for causing massive explosions.
Eda: How many caves have you blown up...?
    Jun: Before this? Three.
  • White Sheep: His clan is rife with, in Kay's words, underhanded power games, including Jun's brothers sending an assassin after him. Jun, on the other hand, has none of the scheming tendencies prevalent in his family, earning him Kay's devotion and loyalty.

     Edalune Grant

Edalune Grant

I'll take you with me...to a place I treasure deeply.

The second main character of the story. An apprentice witch who was sold off to the Witching Tower as a child due to her potential witching abilities. Unfortunately/Fortunately, her abilities were deemed inadequate which saved her from having to serve in the Lumen War but isolated her in the Tower. It was then that she met Red who would become her master and then her parent when the Lumen War ended, starting a flower selling business with her. When she turned 18, her master took her place for a military enlistment, wracking her with guilt. At the start of the game, she is attempting to find her master by looking for Lumen caves and runs into Jun on a trip to look for information.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Few characters ever refer to her full name, mostly referring to her as Eda or, in Remi's case, Eddienote .
  • All of the Other Reindeer:
    • She was bullied a lot by other witch candidates as a child, often being called a liar and the like due to her unique sensitivity to Lumen.
    • In the present, many fear or resent her for being a witch.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: While she's generally a friendly girl, notes from the game artist mention that she was given dark hair to suit how she tends to keep things close to her chest.
  • Badass Boast: When Rushell once again warns her not to involve herself further with Banshee:
Eda: I'm the Red Chamber's witch. I'll make decisions for myself.
  • Beautiful Singing Voice: She has one, unsurprisingly. It's not just Jun's bias either—a few events can have her sing for the public.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She might be the nicest character around, but test her patience far enough and she can prove surprisingly assertive. Some of Jun's possible narration has him in awe of how terrifying she can be when mad.
  • Blessed with Suck: You can find research notes revealing that every generation of witch has one woman given incredible singing potential, but is doomed to lose her voice young.
  • Can't Catch Up: It is revealed that in her past she was desperate to catch up to the other witch apprentices, only to be held back by her throat injury. It eventually is reveled to be her driving character flaw. She is so caught up in trying to be like others that she fails to not only figure out her own ideals, but also endangers those around her while chasing others.
  • The Captain: Of Red Chamber.
  • Caring Gardener: While not necessarily the only one who looks after the flowers Red Chamber keeps for trading purposes, she's the expert and one who personally likes flowers in general.
  • Cool Big Sis: She's one to Remi.
  • Determinator: Ends up deconstructed. Her drive to find Red ends up making her rash and not think things through properly with her stubbornness eventually putting not only her, but Jun and Remi in mortal peril.
  • Do Not Call Me Sir: She has to remind Jun not to call her Captain.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: While she herself was not the target of the betrayal, she is nonetheless appalled when Remi gave Jun faulty information and left him for dead to the point that she refuses to allow Remi to refer to her by her nickname.
  • Game-Breaking Injury: She has suffered a pretty severe injury to her throat which makes it so that she can't sing (or even speak) properly without a voice aid.
  • The Gift: She's naturally a singing prodigy who barely needed instruction, which caused some issues in the Witching Tower when the other kids thought she was just keeping her knowledge secret to stay ahead.
  • Happily Adopted: After being rejected by the other witches she was taken in and adopted by Red and proceeded to live a quite happy life. That is until the military tried to draft her.
  • Hates Being Alone: As Red called her out on, her greatest fear is being left behind.
  • Hypocrite: As Jun points out via lumen sprite should you do the translation, Eda chides him for being impulsive but has no more regard for her own safety than he does.
  • It Was a Gift: Her voice aid, given to her by Red. It's why she refuses to get a new one, even though this one is essentially an antique.
  • I Will Find You: A big motivator for her is to find the Banshee excavation crew which her mentor and adoptive mother Red was part of that went missing years before.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: She's one to Remi, whose life centers around her.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: As they attempt to leave Banshee she ends up realizing that her stubbornness in finding her master put others into mortal danger as the Red Chamber is falling apart all around them after having been hit by debris from the comet.
  • Oh, My Gods!: As she follows the Myrian religion she uses "Myria Everlasting" in a similar way to "oh my god".
  • Only Sane Man: She has her moments, next to the honour-driven Jun and overprotective Remi, such as when Remi tells Jun to watch Eda's back and Jun responds in the affirmative only for Eda to point out that they're all in seatbelts. Inverted and Played for Drama where searching for Red is concerned, however, as Jun and Remi more than once try to temper her emotional decision-making.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: While normally friendly and amicable, she does not take Remi leaving Jun for dead very well with her straight up demanding that she refers to her as Captain from here on out despite having been against in in the past.
  • Orphan's Ordeal: Zig-zagged. She's not bothered by never knowing her birth parents, since being sent to the tower allowed her to meet Red. Red's disappearance, on the other hand, was devastating to her.
  • The Promise: At the Lumen Ziggurat she promises Jun that if they ever leave Thousand Peaks then she will take him to her homeworld to show him the flowers that always bloom there. And even though she presumably died, in the end she managed to keep it in a way.
  • Tsundere: Mild case and dere more often than not, but she defaults to snark when embarrassed over Jun's sappiness, including at one point muttering for him to just go back to East Ocean already.
  • Uncertain Doom: She ends up wounded and stranded within the comet Phoenix as it is heading out of the Thousand Peaks system in its 66 year orbit. When Jun finds it again, it is pretty clear that she is dead even though her body is never seen.
  • You Are Number 6: Before she was given her proper name of Edalune by Red she was simply known as number #108.

    Remi Dorian

Remi Dorian

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/remi_4.png

Why do you make me hate myself so much?

An orphan of the Lumen War that lived on the docks for ships. She made a living repairing ships and forging passes to survive. She met Eda and Red after repairing the Red Chamber, and joined the crew after Eda invited her on. Loves Eda like a sister and is fiercely protective of her. At the start of the game, she is, along with Eda, looking for Red by looking for Lumen caves

  • Ambiguous Situation: Over the 66-year timeskip, it's mentioned that she left Thousand Peaks after splitting up with her lover (Benzel, presumably). Jun chose not to ask about it, so it's never revealed what exactly happened, especially considering that the war may have still been going on.
  • Beautiful Singing Voice: A potential event can reveal that, like Eda, she sings beautifully, which comes as a surprise to Jun who's used to Remi shouting and screaming at him.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She was the victim of a human trafficking ring, and even after she was rescued by a friendly United Mining soldier she ended up on the streets, having to forge illegal documents for food.
  • Dartboard of Hate: Keeps a dartboard with a photo of Jun on it in her room.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: In her past she was called Snake Eyes when trapped in a human trafficking situation due to her piercing stare.
  • Hackette: On top of managing the ship, she is also skilled in hacking. A skill she puts to use to spy on Jun's messages. Though unfortunately, this doesn't give her the full context.
  • Hates Being Alone: Not as prominently as Eda, but a younger Remi, when trying to articulate what she liked and didn't like, asked Eda if it was okay that she disliked being alone.
  • Humanizing Tears: When she breaks down in tears and lays out to Eda how miserable she is. It's a turning point for her character and especially how she treats Jun, as she lets go of her hatred towards him with this.
  • Identical Stranger: She resembles the late princess of the Rumani clan, with it being hinted that she could even be said princess's missing child—though, as with many things in the game, it's never said one way or another.
  • Killed Offscreen: She dies sometime just before the epilogue, presumably of old age.
  • Line-of-Sight Name: When a soldier asked for her name after rescuing her, she named herself after the chocolate he gave her.
  • Muggle Best Friend: She is a normal human helping her best friend Eda, a witch, in any way that she can.
  • The Nicknamer: On Eda's recommendation to nickname people she's close to, Remi started calling her Eddie. She later appoints Bones as Laurie after he saves Jun yet again.
  • The Runaway: She was once adopted into a family that believed girls should Stay in the Kitchen, so she ran off to live on the streets. It's telling that this is one of the least traumatic aspects of her past.
  • Shipping Torpedo: She's painfully aware of the Ship Tease between Jun and Eda and despises it, thanks to her own dislike of the former and fear that Eda will run off with him.
  • Sorry That I'm Dying: According to a Lee clan member, her final words for Jun were apologizing for not being by his side to the end, as she passes away just before he leaves for Phoenix.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: She can be quite mean, but at the end of the day, she's just a sad and lonely child, not unlike Jun and Eda.
  • Sour Supporter: She is quite cynical and especially abrasive towards Jun. A stark contrast to Eda.
  • Teen Genius: She's the youngest member of the cast but one of the most knowledgeable, and Jun describes her as the best pilot he's known.
  • Too Much Alike: As it turns out, one reason to why her relationship with Jun is so toxic is simply due to the fact that they are far more similar to each other than she wants to admit.
  • Tsundere:
    • Hinted at from the item description when buying a wrench. She acts angry and disappointed, but Jun could swear that she almost seemed appreciative afterwards. Ultimately zig-zagged: it's initially subverted as her vitriol towards Jun isn't for show; she hates him enough to try and get him killed. However, she later has a change of heart, and while her attitude never really changes, it's implied she cares for him by the end.
    • Played straight in regards to Benzel, whom she regularly spurns, and yet she keeps a handwritten letter from him and later goes on to enter a relationship with him.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: While their relationship is genuinely strained in places, Jun's narration mentions that he looks back fondly on the days he'd bicker with her.
  • What Beautiful Eyes!: Her gaze has creeped out more than one person, but Eda describes it as beautiful.
  • Wrench Wench: She is the one responsible for keeping the Red Chamber in working order as well as making any upgrades the crew needs.
  • Yandere: She is extremely protective of Eda to the point that she is constantly looking for ways to get Jun out of the picture due to her viewing him as a threat.

     Kay Volan

Kay Volan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kay_8.png

Promise me you'll find the caves and become a worthy clan master.

  • Defector from Decadence: It eventually becomes clear that at this point, he's loyal to Jun rather than to the Lee Clan, after growing disillusioned with all of the latter's infighting and seeing Jun as its only hope of redemption. He declined the chance to serve the current head, instead choosing to follow Jun into exile.
  • I Let Gwen Stacy Die: The Gwen Stacy in this case—Jun frequently remembers and blames himself for Kay's death.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: All he wants is a worthy master to follow, but he's aware that those are in short supply. Fortunately, he met Jun, whom he actually respects for being something of a Wide-Eyed Idealist since childhood.
  • Manly Facial Hair: Easily identified by his beard, and he stands out as the largest character in the cast as well as one of the few Lumen War veterans.
  • Men Don't Cry: When he first met Jun and Jun told him not to cry, he told the young Jun that he wasn't crying. For the record, Kay's tears can be seen in the CG just before this moment.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: While he initially seems to subvert this trope, surviving his original injuries, he eventually suffers from a fatal wound after fending off an assassin.
  • Mr. Exposition: He serves as the initial tutorial, explaining how to explore lumen caves in Thousand Peaks to Jun.
  • Papa Wolf: Though officially Jun's subordinate, he essentially serves as a Parental Substitute towards him and is fiercely protective.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: Has some shades of this; it's mentioned that for an East Ocean warrior like him, being wheelchair-bound would be the same as death to him. More than one line also establishes that Kay adheres strictly to East Ocean-brand honour (e.g. disapproving of underground arenas), compared to Jun who's potentially more willing to adjust to Thousand Peaks' culture.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: His death firmly establishes what the tone will be like for the rest of the game.
  • Shoot the Hostage: At the start of the game, he warns Jun ahead of time that he'll do this to Eda if it comes down to it. Jun makes it very clear that he is not to do so.
  • Undying Loyalty: Towards Jun, complete with an actual vow of fealty.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: He ultimately dies keeping an assassin from reaching Jun.

     Dr. Rushell Moore

Dr. Rushell Moore

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ruchell.png

Give up now and move on with your life.

  • Brutal Honesty: As she herself puts it, she always speaks her mind—right before she tells Eda that she doesn't have what it takes to find Red. Jun's narration mentions that while she was always nagging them, he misses that dearly.
  • Dressed to Heal: Visibly wears a labcoat and a stethoscope around her neck.
  • Dr. Jerk: She's a good person but doesn't bother with niceties. As Kay puts it, her attitude is poor but her skills are the real deal.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: As a veteran of the Lumen War and friend of Red she helps Eda best she can, though not without plenty of stern warnings and cynical advice at how foolish she is being.
  • Shipping Torpedo: Not to Remi's extreme, but she thinks Eda should avoid getting attached to Jun and tells Jun that he should leave sooner than later since he'll break Eda's heart.
  • Tsundere: Towards Red, whom she insists she absolutely does not and would never miss, thank you. There's also her tendency to tell Eda to give up and then turn around and give her exactly the intel she needs.
  • Uncertain Doom: After the disbandment of the Lumen Association she vanished and was never heard from again.

     Red Grant

Red Grant

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/red_87.png

Don't try to be me. Don't try to be anyone.

  • The Atoner: She is trying to atone for all the death and destruction she caused during the Lumen War by entering in the flower trading business.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: Her parting words have her refer to Eda as #108 again, dehumanizing her, but it's evident she does so to make a point about how Eda has yet to find herself and needs to stop clinging to her.
  • Mentor in Sour Armor: After going through the Lumen War and knowing how worthless being a recognized witch is, she's not impressed with Eda's desperation to be one.
  • Never Found the Body: It is pretty clear to most that Red is already dead after having vanished 5 years prior despite how much Eda wants to believe otherwise. Eda eventually comes to accept this reality, but still wants to at least find Red's body so that she can get some closure, a task she succeeds in but in doing so also sealing her own fate.
  • Parental Substitute: To Eda and Remi.
  • Present Absence: Finding her is Eda and Remi's (and, by association, Jun's) goal.
  • Stern Teacher: She acted as an incredibly stern mentor towards Eda and didn't mince words, though she did all this cause she ultimately cared for her.

     Bones

Bones / Lawrence White

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bones_8.png

  • Boxed Crook: He ends up serving United Mining as a way to reduce his sentence.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Says this almost word for word to Jun, upon the latter realizing how much he cared for his (now dead) men.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He points out that it's more than a little messed up how Jun's own family is trying to have him killed.
  • A Father to His Men: He created the brigade to give his men from the war a livelihood. When Kay demands that they don't touch Khun in return for releasing one of Bones's subordinates, Bones clearly isn't pleased—Khun's worth a lot of money—but then wryly tells said subordinate that congrats, he's worth an entire ship now.
  • Heel–Face Turn: While he starts out antagonistic, he eventually helps out Jun when he finds himself in a tight spot twice over.
  • Noble Demon: In his own words, he's a pirate, not a butcher; he won't kill Eda just for stepping into his territory. Unfortunately for her, his men don't share the same sentiment.
  • Space Pirates: Starts as a space pirate before Jun sparing his life causes him to give himself in.
  • Starter Villain: He's the first obstacle of the series, both in terms of Jun and co. having to escape his base and then dealing with the bounty he put on their heads for about a chapter.
  • Uncertain Doom: During the second Lumen War he joined the asteroid belt resistance and went MIA in all the chaos during the war.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: While a notorious criminal nowadays, he's regarded as a war hero among many in Thousand Peaks. It's part of why some people are happy to go after the bounty on Jun and co.'s head—not even just for the money, but because it's Bones asking.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: He's not exactly nice to Jun, but it's telling that he willingly acts as a pen pal of sorts towards him.
