Cassie Sidero

She may seem cold, but get to know her and she’s… bloody nice!

At first glance, Cassie is a bully towards Zephixa. However, it’s soon revealed that Cassie is suffering herself. She’s secretly a vampire, and has to keep her identity secret, or risk her and her grandmother being killed. Soon, she warms up to Zephixa and befriends her.

  • Beta Bitch: She served as this to Nicole back in school. Subverted when Nicole spikes her food with garlic powder, giving her an allergic reaction, causing Cassie to cut ties with her and leave school.
  • Bully Turned Buddy: While she used to bully Zephixa, she eventually became her friend, and later her lover.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: While she may be a vampire who wears some rather dark clothes, she isn’t evil or a bad person.
  • Daywalking Vampire: In this story, vampires have no problem with daylight. Cassie is no exception.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: At first glance, she’s a cold and rude person. But upon Zephixa finding out her secret, at first she’s nervous about it, but then trusts Zephixa and warms up to her. By the end of the story, she is safely able to expose her identity, and come out of her outer shell. She becomes very loving towards Zephixa, too.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Downplayed. She has very pale skin and a dark colour scheme, but her hair, while it does have some black stripes, is mostly dark blue.
  • Friendly Neighbourhood Vampire: She’s secretly a vampire, but she won’t attack people for blood.
  • Interspecies Romance: She’s a vampire, but she falls in love with Zephixa, a lamia.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While she may seem mean at first, once your nice to her and help her out, she’ll gladly return the favour and more, and will stand up for you and protect you from others, while supporting you to no end.
  • Lesbian Vampire: Defied. While she is bisexual and ends up in a same sex relationship with Zephixa, as stated below, she does NOT drink the blood of sentient beings due to her morals, no matter what their gender is.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: Has a rather feminine appearance. And again, she’s bisexual.
  • Vegetarian Vampire: Sort of. She doesn’t drink the blood of sentient beings. She only goes after wild animals or blood banks.

    Miyuki Nekolia

Miyuki Nekolia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/db117d15_a1d0_4e19_91fa_7d1712933216.jpeg
A cat girl who actually acts like a cat!

An eccentric neko from Japan, Miyuki quickly warms up to Zephixa, and starts to help her out. She was abused by her family due to her birth causing her mother’s death, causing her to run away from her family.

  • Cat Girl: She is a neko, a type of monster that looks like a human, but with cat ears, cat tail, and sharp claws.
  • Genius Ditz: Usually, she isn’t the brightest due to her cat like behaviour. However, she is the one who ends up finding the secret society with lamias and vampires, and also gets them to find Zephixa and Cassie when their lost, which proves to be very helpful. She also manages to trick Heather into thinking her trick worked, then proceeds to stab Heather in the stomach.
  • Little Bit Beastly: While she looks mostly like a normal human and could easily disguise herself, she still has cat ears, sharper claws and a cat tail.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She feels pretty bad after stabbing Heather, despite everything she did.
  • You Monster!: Says this to Heather in the climax after she shoots off one of Charlotte’s legs.

    Charlotte Mythic

Charlotte Mythic

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/934be947_69e6_437c_9158_4c0608db612f.jpeg
Up and coming singer, preaching for equality!

Charlotte Mythic is an up and coming singer, who upon meeting Zephixa, wants to use her for her concert. Charlotte wants an accepting society, and tries to sing about it, such as her using Zephixa, Cassie and Miyuki in her concert to prove that non-humans aren’t bad. It’s later revealed that she actually wants to be an actress, not a singer, but was pressured.

  • Ambiguously Gay: She fawns out over Zephixa and Miyuki, especially the latter, expressing a desire to cuddle her for being so adorable. The two even lie together in a hospital bed comfortably.
  • An Arm and a Leg: She has her leg shot while being tortured by Heather and, as a result, needs to get it amputated.
  • Genki Girl: She’s very excited and hyper almost all of the time.
  • Idol Singer: She’s quite young, but she’s a very good singer with a lot of fans, enough to have a concert.

Zephixa’s adoptive father.

Zephixa’s adoptive father. He took her in as an egg to fulfill her mother’s dying wish.

  • Good Parents: He is a great father to Zephixa, always supporting her dreams no matter what.
  • Nice Guy: He’s a friendly and nice person.
  • Open-Minded Parent: He doesn’t mind that his daughter is a lamia, autistic or a lesbian, he still loves her and supports her. He even encourages her to ask Cassie out, despite what happened with her in the past.

Antagonists

    Derek Hunter

Derek Hunter

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/22ab4ab3_5968_4425_9012_94d906e260dd.jpeg
Proof that humans are sometimes worse than monsters.

A brutal hunter who enjoys hurting non-humans, Derek was the one responsible for Zephixa getting among humans in the first place, thanks to him massacring the lamias. He ended up in prison for his actions, but later breaks free, wanting to kill Zephixa to finish his job.

  • Absolute Xenophobe: He hates every single non-human, especially the lamias, to the point where he tries to wipe them out in the past and finish them off in the present.
  • Big Bad: Not only did he cause the events of the story, but he is portrayed as the biggest threat.
  • Dying Smirk: When he is pinned by Zephixa in the end, and Zephixa expresses how she wants to kill him, he mocks her, telling her how she proved herself wrong. Heck, even when his neck is snapped and he’s completely dead, he has a nasty smile on his face.
  • Egomaniac Hunter: He lives and breathes this trope. He hunts non-human creatures for the sheer fun of it and to fuel his own massive ego and power complex. He shows no regret for how many he has killed.
  • Fantastic Racism: He has a burning hatred for all non-human races, especially lamias.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: We don’t care if he was neglected or felt insecure. He had no right to turn into such an egotistical and sadistic asshole. Zephixa went through far worse, but she turned out really nice.
  • Hate Sink: A nasty, racist person who has no redeeming qualities, and likes to hurt non-humans simply to make himself appear strong, he is hated by almost everyone in the story, and isn’t very likeable to the audience either.
  • The Heavy: His genocide on the lamias was what caused Zephixa to end up living among humans in the first place.
  • It's All About Me: He views everything through the lens of how it affects him and only him, not caring about how anyone else feels.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Gives this to Zephixa during their first meeting about their similar backstories of being rejected and neglected by people.
  • Punished for Sympathy: When one of his hunters refused to kill a lamia, Derek killed him.
  • Steven Ulysses Perhero: His name is Derek Hunter. He's a hunter.

    Midnight

Midnight

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aec47d3d_b4a3_49b9_9883_a02a7320d991.jpeg
He may hunt vampires, but he does it to protect.

An intelligent vampire hunter, Midnight (aka Gabriel Moreau) seeks to protect humanity from vampires, as he believes that they pose a threat, due to their bad reputation, and his village being taken away by vampires. At the end of the story, Midnight realises that not all vampires and evil, and becomes a bounty hunter instead.

  • Affably Evil: He is very polite, calm and collected.
  • Anti-Villain: While he does hunt vampires, he genuinely thinks he’s protecting humanity, which is why he does it.
  • Bounty Hunter: His new job after turning himself in.
  • The Chessmaster: Midnight is very good at making events go his way. He disguises himself as a security guard at Charlotte’s concert, plus he got Zephixa’s publisher into a car accident so he wouldn’t publish her stuff, then closer to the final battle, he pretends to be on Derek’s side, but then phones the police, pretending to be a terrorist, causing them to arrive faster.
  • Dark Is Evil: He wears rather dark clothes, and hunts vampires for a living. Although, calling him evil is a bit of a stretch.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: A rare example of someone fitting both tropes at the same time. While he is an infamous vampire hunter, he has good intentions at heart and wishes to protect humanity. He even completely subverts his vampire hunting at the end.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He ends up horrified to discover what Derek plans to do to lure Zephixa and starts working against him as a result.
  • Freudian Excuse: His mother was killed by a vampire when he was a kid. In fact, his entire village was under attack by hostile vampires, which resulted in his village being blown up, fuelling his beliefs that vampires were all evil.
  • Heel–Face Turn: During the climax, he realises how vampires aren’t all bad, and he redeems himself by fighting against Derek, then defending Zephixa, Cassie and Miyuki from the police, then turning himself in.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He manipulates people quite a few times. For example, when he pretends to be a fan of Zephixa, and starts asking her questions, when he was really just getting information on Cassie. Plus, there’s when Cassie gets exposed, he makes the public think she’s dangerous, and puts a bounty on her head to make sure she can’t hide in her own village.
  • The Strategist: He’s excellent at planning his every move.
  • Vampire Hunter: What he specializes in, having already killed 30 vampires before the story starts. But this changes after he realizes that not all are evil.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Again, he wants to protect humanity from threats, and he believes vampires are threats.

    Heather Pepitone

Heather Pepitone

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/756f1ea7_a609_4aed_a999_36e5af7a0e75.jpeg
A cunning, ruthless thief. Hey, at least she isn’t racist.

Heather is a cunning thief and ruthless gangster. She does what she can to get her hands on money. In the past, she used to try to provide for her poor parents by earning money, even though her parents hated her merely for existing, but stopped upon realising her parents would never appreciate her.

  • Abusive Parents: Her parents had her by accident, and were poor, so they made her childhood absolutely hell.
  • The Chessmaster: In the prison escape, she causes a prison riot to distract everyone so she can escape.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: When she saw Charlotte tampering with the bombs, she attacked her, but she got heated due to hating her and then began to get really brutal while keeping her alive, to the point where it was effectively torture. While she showed no sadism, it was clearly brutal and Charlotte even described it as being tortured.
  • Dark Is Evil: She wears black leather all over, and also has a black eyepatch. It fits her gangster theme.
  • Face–Heel Turn: She used to be a helpful person to her parents, trying to get money for them due to them all being in poverty. However, she eventually left her parents due to their ungrateful attitude and abuse towards her, and became a street gangster, who would do anything to get money for herself, even if it involves stealing from people, or even killing people on cold blood.
  • Freudian Excuse: She was abused by her parents, but she still tried to help them out with money, going really far to help them. Unfortunately she couldn’t take off as a singer, which was her dream, which made her parents hate her more, which resulted in her leaving them with a hole in her heart. She turned to a life of crime due to not being able to make money legally.
  • Hell-Bent for Leather: She wears a leather jacket and leather pants.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Due to living a life of crime and gangs, she manipulates people often to get what she wants.
  • Only in It for the Money: Literally all she wants in the story. She’ll kill people if it means she can get some cash.
  • Outside-Genre Foe: Downplayed. While the other villains have problems with other races, and the main conflict of the story is racism, Heather has no prejudice against other races at all, to the point she feels out of place from the other antagonists due to not being a part of the main problem of the story. She’s just a greedy criminal who happens to help the other antagonists and also has something against Charlotte. However, she’s not completely far fetched for the story, she’s just an ordinary human that’s placed in an unordinary world.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Not Heather herself, but her parents. Despite all the efforts Heather made to help them financially, they never showed her any gratitude, and told her to “stop wasting everyone else’s time like you do with us”. It’s no wonder Heather cut ties with them.
  • Villain Respect: When Miyuki sees through her trick and stabs her, she congratulates her.
