YMMV / Monsters Among Humanity

Go To

  • Complete Monster: Derek Hunter is an egotistical and xenophobic hunter who believes all non-humans are weak. When Derek and his fellow hunters found some lamias living in the wild gathering together, he shot one of them, provoking all the other lamias and pressuring the other hunters into helping him massacre the lamias until most were dead, even killing one of his own hunters simply for refusing to kill a lamia. When Nesusi was fleeing with her egg, Derek chased her and shot her in the back, causing her to die in front of Joshua Scaleton. Derek then tried to convince the other villagers to help him wipe out every lamia left in the forest, but was arrested. Twenty years later, Derek escaped with Heather's help upon seeing Zephixa perform on stage, wanting to kill Zephixa out of spite. After Zephixa gets away, Derek threatens her that he would blow up part of their village with everyone in it if she didn't hand herself in, but it was made clear that he planned to blow it up anyway.
  • Jerkass Woobie: In order of increasing Jerkass:Woobie ratio:
    • Cassie may have started the story as a bully, but in the end, it was done to fit in, and she didn’t mean any of what she said about Zephixa’s non-human nature, given that she herself is a vampire, and was jealous of Zephixa for being able to go without having to mask her race. Learning of her backstory slides her squarely into this territory, as she lost her entire family simply because they were vampires, so she had to hide her own vampirism or risk more Fantastic Racism.
    • Midnight may be the least evil of the antagonists of the story, and the only one with any standards whatsoever, but he’s still the one who killed Cassie’s family, and has killed numerous other vampires because he is driven by his Fantastic Racism against them. However, he genuinely believes he is doing the right thing and that vampires are a serious threat against humanity. This stems from his own past, where his village was destroyed by a hostile group of vampires, and he lost his mother, before being taken in by vampire hunters.
    • Heather is a notorious murderer and criminal, and tortured Charlotte out of a dislike for her, but her past is very pitiable, as she grew up poor and tried to make use of her only talent - singing - to provide for her ungrateful, abusive parents. When that didn’t work out, she turned to a life of crime, a life she’s been living ever since.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Gabriel Moreau, also known as Midnight, is a highly intelligent veteran vampire hunter. Believing that vampires are evil, Midnight wishes to protect humanity from them, so he tracks vampires and hunts them down, having killed over thirty vampires in his career. Suspecting that Cassie may be a vampire, Midnight follows her to Japan and begins to observe her, using various methods to slowly gather information about her. After Cassie is exposed and escapes, Midnight puts a bounty on her head in an attempt to flush her out. Midnight forms a partnership with Derek and Heather to hunt their targets together. However, Midnight quickly comes to dislike Derek due to his vile intentions, even being shocked at his intentions to blow up the village. Midnight pretends to go along with Derek's plans, but then phones the cops, pretending to be a terrorist so they arrive faster. After Midnight sees Cassie defuse a bomb, Midnight begins to realize that not all vampires are evil, and then turns on Derek. After turning himself in, Midnight becomes a Bounty Hunter to take out criminals and protect humanity properly.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Derek crosses it in his very first appearance, when he almost succeeds in driving the lamias into extinction, and kills his own friend Corey simply for not wanting to participate in the brutality.
    • Heather crosses it when she tortures Charlotte, who has already been taken hostage, and then blows one of her legs off with a shotgun.
  • The Woobie:
    • Zephixa's life has been a struggle since the moment she was born. She struggled to fit among humans, and ever since middle school, she has been intensely bullied and discriminated against, causing her to become shy and timid. Even as an adult, she would face constant Fantastic Racism and struggle to find her place in the world. She mentions being autistic and gay, so she also deals with ableism and homophobia. And that isn't even the end of it, as she was soon hunted down by Derek Hunter, who wanted her dead out of petty revenge.
    • Miyuki counts as this, as she had a difficult home life. Her mother died giving birth to her, which caused her entire family to hate her and start abusing her, to the point where she ran away from home to get away from them, seeking a new life with Zephixa and her friends.
