    Mr. and Mrs. Kageyama

Nobuhiko Kageyama voiced by: Yoshinori Muto (Japanese), Kyle Hebert (English) Foreign VAs

Mrs. Kageyama voiced by: Kayou Nakajima (Japanese), Philece Sampler (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/parents_7.png

Mob and Ritsu's birth parents.

  • Fantastically Indifferent: Compared to most Shonen parents who would be flabbergasted over their child having unique and special powers, these two aren't bothered by Mob having OP esper abilities. At most, the mom treats it like a bad habit while the dad brushes it off as a puberty thing.
  • Good Parents: Average as they are and as favoritist as Mrs Kageyama is, they're still decent people who do love their boys.
  • Informed Attribute: Mob mentions that his dad can be really strict. Yet most of his screentime shows him with a mellow nature.
  • Parental Favoritism: Mrs Kageyama often shows more preference for Ritsu over Shigeo due to the former being a stellar student who's involved in the student council.
  • Parental Obliviousness: Played with. They're fully aware of Mob and Ritsu having psychic powers along with him working for Reigen at Spirits and Such, but they don't really know about the high-stakes adventures that their sons frequently go on.
  • Put on a Bus: During the World Domination Arc, Shou provides them a free trip to an extravagant resort and spa in order to keep them away from Seasoning City where the ultimate battle of good vs evil would take place.
  • Smoking Is Cool: The dad is implied to smoke and enjoys it according to Mob.
  • Unnamed Parent: The mother's name is unknown.

    Origo Hoshida
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/origo.png

A 3rd year student at Peppercorn High School. He was once a former disciple of a phony psychic (not Reigen for once).

  • Birds of a Feather: Origo strikes a friendship with Tome thanks to their shared love of the supernatural
  • Broken Pedestal: He quits being Dozen's apprentice after the wicked man decided to abandon him in the middle of a haunted forest on the grounds of having business matters to attend to.
  • Hopeless Suitor: He develops romantic feelings for Tome after their spiritual adventure. To his dismay, the girl is totally clueless and prefers the occult over ogling bros.
  • Nice Guy: A chipper young man who is quite courteous to others.

Salt Middle School

    Tome Kurata

Voiced by: Atsumi Tanezaki (Japanese), Cherami Leigh (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tome.png

The president of the Telepathy Club, Tome Kurata (暗田トメ; Kurata Tome) has one passion: the paranormal. Her initial goal is to communicate with aliens via telepathy, and she demands that Mob help her find espers in hopes of locating a telepath.

  • Agent Mulder: She's the only one in the Telepathy Club who actually believes in telepathy and using it to contact extraterrestrials, while the other members are just there to slack off.
  • Ascended Extra: She assumes the role of the main character in Reigen, since she's an unofficial employee of Spirits and Such by that time.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: In Reigen, she's the first ONE protagonist not to have any sort of special abilities, either earned or naturally-gained. Also unlike Mob, instead of being more interested in living a normal life and being more popular, but sort of happening into unusual situations, Tome wants to become more deeply entrenched in the supernatural and occult of the world while being pushed away from it by others, and doesn't care about more mundane goings-on in life.
  • Damsel in Distress: She ends up in at least three perilous situations in the Reigen spinoff. It's justified in the sense that each of them were supernatural and Tome has no powers or past experiences to rescue herself.
  • A Day in the Limelight: She and the Telepathy Club are given the spotlight during the titular Telepathy Club Mini Arc.
  • Determinator: Will overcome any kind of hurdles to keep the club afloat, even when the other club members point out that they really don't do anything of substance.
President... we haven't done anything so far.
    • She also hounds Reigen for a job at Spirits and Such, refusing to take "no" for an answer.
  • Foil: To Tsubomi Takane. Both of them are dark haired girls who have significant involvement in Mob's school life. But while Tsubomi is presented as dignified, feminine and composed, Tome is shown to contrast her as an uncouth, overexcited tomboy. Tsubomi is presented as a crush for Mob whom he rarely talks to while Tome is a close friend that he interacts with on a daily basis. And while Tsubomi is shown to be the most popular girl in school with a legion of male admirers, Tome is on the bottom of the social hierarchy with the three Telepathy Club boys as her entourage.
  • Goal in Life: She wants to figure out telepathy so she can use it to communicate with aliens and other extraterrestrial lifeforms.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: During the Reigen spinoff, she voices a desire for psychic powers and hangs around the Spirits & Such office in the hopes of finding a way to obtain them.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: As stubborn, selfish and crude as she is, she does have a good heart and cares for her friends. This is best shown during the Marathon Arc where she forces the Telepathy Club (who were trying to skip the race by pretending to be sick) to participate to support Mob.
Tome: Even Mob is lining up to do this. SO YOU'RE RUNNING TOO!
  • The Lad-ette: She's loud, crass, obnoxious, and loves video games (and aliens). She also seems to get along better with boys than with girls.
  • Large Ham: She has a tendency to overreact and showcase her eccentric side when interacting with people.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Can be this at times—she's particularly fond of Crocodile Tears as a means to an end.
  • Not Like Other Girls: Subverted in the Reigen spinoff. When Tome reaches high school, she feels it's impossible to relate to the other girls in her class because of her weird interests and even comes to resent them as shallow and boring despite their efforts to befriend her. This changes after she comes across a discarded draft of one of their standup comedy sets and soon learns every single one of those "Other Girls" is a Closet Geek convinced they too were Not Like Other Girls, which prompts Tome to realize she was just being childishly presumptuous and actually accept their overtures of friendship.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite having the most drive to make contact with aliens and espers, she's just as slothful as her club members.
  • Odd Name Out: Compared to the rest of the Telepathy Club members whose names are based on characters from the fairy tale Momotarō, Tome's name isn't based on anyone from the story.
  • Plucky Office Girl: By Chapter 101, she's been the secretary at Spirits & Such for a few months, and accidentally causes Reigen to drop his birthday cake in an attempt to get a raise. Reigen reveals that she isn't really paid at all, meanwhile, and in fact just sort of decided she works there.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She's the only female member of the Telepathy Club, although she is their leader which makes for an unusual variation of the trope.
    • In Reigen, she's the first, and only, girl to join the Spirits & Such team.
  • Spotlight-Stealing Squad: Despite the name of the spin-off, Tome is the main protagonist while Reigen continues as the deuteragonist.

    Telepathy Club

Mameta Inukawa voiced by: Seiichirō Yamashita (Japanese), Chris Hackney (English) Foreign VAs

Shirihiko Saruta voiced by: Daiki Hamano (Japanese), Chris Cason (English) Foreign VAs

Haruto Kijibayashi voiced by: Ryunosuke Watanuki (Japanese), Kaiji Tang (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/telepathy.png
Left to right: Mameta, Shirihiko and Haruto

Three stooges who are part of the (defunct) Telepathy Club. Unlike their president, they only joined the club so they can goof off and spend their freetime eating junk food and playing video games.

  • Ambiguously Brown: Shirihiko has a dark skin color compared to his friends.
  • Big Anime Eyes: Mameta sports these after coming back down to Earth, though it seems they only come up when aliens are brought up.
  • Big, Thin, Short Trio: Shirihiko would be the 'Big', Haruto is the 'Thin' and Mameta is the 'Short'.
  • Flat Character: We don't know much about their personal interests or goals in life.
  • Foil: To the Body Improvement Club. While they're genuinely good hearted kids who want to enjoy their youth, they prefer to spend that time lazing around and eating junk food compared to how health conscious and physically productive the BI Club is.
  • Hero of Another Story: Mameta ends up being taken by aliens due to a misunderstanding. During his ten day journey, the boy becomes something of a popular idol among the aliens as he looks for a way to return home.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: They feel instant regret during the Telepathy Club Mini-Arc when they realize that their indifference to Tome's sorrow and lack of research progress made her feel even worse then before.
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: Despite their club being dedicated to researching aliens and the supernatural, they use it as a cover just to goof off.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: Their last names are based on the animal characters featured in the Japanese fairy tale Momotarō. Inukawa has "inu" which means "dog", Saruta has "saru" which means "monkey" and Kijibayashi has "kiji" which means "pheasant".
  • The Slacker: They're only known for their unwillingness to improve themselves and would rather play around all day.

    Tsubomi Takane

Voiced by: Uki Satake (Japanese), Ryan Bartley (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tsubomi.png

"Get a clue."

Tsubomi Takane (高嶺ツボミ; Takane Tsubomi) is an attendee of Salt Middle School that Mob also goes to, making them classmates. Apparently, she and Mob were childhood friends, and Mob has a rather huge crush on her.

  • Adaptation Expansion: Just barely, the anime attempts to give Tsubomi more of a presence in the few instances she originally appeared in the manga (especially on the series' final third season) along with slightly altering her personality as seen below, possibly to have the audience understand why Mob grew to like Tsubomi in the first place more easily; in comparison Tsubomi as seen in the manga is a borderline enigma, with almost no expression, and even less presence.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: Downplayed. But Anime Tsubomi is notably a little more cheerful and lively than her Manga counterpart, who comes across as a little more introverted and demure. Anime Tsubomi was also seen to actually be impressed by Mob's powers at first before getting bored later, while manga Tsubomi was not impressed from the get-go. Anime Tsubomi is also shown more to act like she has known Mob and considers him a friend as she should be as seen with her trying to cheer Mob on during the marathon (before stopping suddenly) as opposed to the manga where she is only seen in a single panel looking at Mob without saying anything.
  • Childhood Friends: She and Mob used to be pretty close when they were younger. Although they somewhat drifted apart when Tsubomi lost interest in Mob's powers and began to hang out with other kids.
  • Crush Filter: Mob's for her is so strong it makes everyone around her look like vegetables. The third season of the anime removes the crush filter when she's not viewed from Mob's perspective, showing she's actually not as over-the-top cutesy as Mob makes her out to be.
  • Dude Magnet: A lot of her male classmates find her attractive, with Mob included.
  • Fantastically Indifferent: Used to be impressed when Mob showed off his powers to her as kids, but the novelty quickly wore off. At one point she is glad to see him using his powers to help others, though.
  • Foil: To Tome Kurata. Both of them are dark haired girls who have significant involvement in Mob's school life. But while Tome has an over the top and aggressive personality, Tsubomi is shown to be more refined and ladylike when she interacts with others. Mob also views Tome as a good friend whom he speaks to freely while Tsubomi is treated as an unobtainable crush that Mob continually works hard to find the right opportunity to speak to her. And Tome is shown to be a loser who mainly hangs with the unpopular Telepathy Club boys while Tsubomi is one of the most popular kids in school and has a legion of boys who have crushes on her.
  • Gaussian Girl: Mob tends to view her with a faint, sparkly pink glow around her, while everyone else just looks like walking vegetables to emphasize his tunnel vision towards her.
  • Heroic Willpower: She is said to be strong-willed, the kind of person that doesn't follow the crowd. She was one of the last people to join the broccoli cult, as her will resisted with ease for a long time.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • While we've seen very little of her, Dimple claims that she's 'too much woman' for Mob to handle based on what he's observed, and Ichi claims that she's hiding her real self. We know that she isn't impressed by Mob's power, and her reaction to a tornado coming her way in the midst of a city-destroying earthquake is to sit on a bench and wait for the person she's meeting when everyone else had already evacuated.
    • She also seems to be more perceptive than she looks. When she visits Reigen's office with a friend who's looking for relationship advice, she makes up a story about liking someone and asks advice from Reigen to test if he's really legitimate. In Season 3, it's established that she ranked fourth in Salt Middle's Academic Rankings.
  • Just Friends: Ultimately, how she sees herself and Mob. She does care for him, but she never really saw him in a romantic light and rejects his confession near the end of Chapter 100.
  • Malaproper: In the live action version, she does this a minimum of once per episode. In fact, a fake love letter designed to lure Mob does the Kanji version of this, substituting the kanji for "like" with the kanji for "boner"... demonstrating that she's notorious in-universe for this trope.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: In the anime, her eyes are drawn in a more typical anime style, being bigger and shinier, as opposed to the beadier eyes the rest of the cast has. However, in Season 3, she's drawn closer to how she looks in the manga, indicating that her previous eye design was just a result of Mob's Crush Filter.
  • Peerless Love Interest: Everyone thinks that she's way out of Mob's league and that he doesn't have a shot with her. They're right.
  • Satellite Love Interest: Other than being Mob's childhood friend and the subject of his crush, she doesn't have further character development and rarely appears at all because Mob and every other boy doesn't have the guts to even talk to her.
  • School Idol: Of Salt Middle School.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: She doesn't show up a lot, but impressing her is a large part of what motivates Mob and fuels his Character Development.
  • Tareme Eyes: Her anime counterpart has noticeably big rounder eyes than her manga counterpart. In Season 3, they're changed to being more in line with her manga design when not viewed through Mob's Crush Filter.

    Musashi Gouda

Voiced by: Toshihiko Seki (Japanese), Patrick Seitz (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/musashi.png

"I'm not gonna give him up! We are training buddies! You've always been working so hard!"

The president of the Body Improvement Club. Despite his appearance, he is an extremely kind soul who despises violence and wants nothing more than to support those who want to improve their bodies.

  • Dumb Muscle: He's the least knowledgeable of his crew. In compensation, Musashi has a great sense of justice.
  • Face of a Thug: Has been confused for a delinquent multiple times, even though it could not be farther from the truth. It's implied that this being true for him, as well as the rest of the Body Improvement Club, is why they're introduced with only just enough members to count as a club, while the manga ends with much more novice members due to Mob's less threatening appearance.
  • Growing Muscles Sequence: Played for Laughs whenever he gets serious and flexes. Played for seriousness when Dimple takes over his body and turns him into a much larger, muscular version of himself.
  • Heroic Build: Is quite muscular, and is an extremely Nice Guy with a great sense of justice.
  • Hot-Blooded: Musashi has one setting, and that setting is 100% Pumped Up.
  • Justice Will Prevail: A strong believer in this trope.
  • Lovable Jock: Shares this trope with all fellow members of the Body Improvement Club.
  • Martial Pacifist: He hasn't built his body for violence, but when he hears another school took Mob as a hostage, Musashi flips out.
  • Muscles Are Meaningful: When Dimple takes over Musashi to protect Mob from an esper with psychically-enhanced muscles, he points out Mob was right all along and that the villain's power is no match for Musashi's diligent training.
  • Nice Guy: He's willing to stick up for anyone who needs help, and is supportive of Mob. He even allows the Telepathy Club to continue using the room they were in, since they really only needed a place to store their equipment. When Tenga is falsely accused by the Student Council of being a pervert, tainting his reputation, Musashi decides to help him shape up. Musashi also knows that Tenga isn't actually a pervert and defends Tenga from Shinji when he tries to get him expelled.
  • The Worf Effect: His group is a force to be reckoned with, but they're no match for Teruki's psychic powers or any antagonistic espers they come across.
  • Younger Than They Look: The muscled president of the Body Improvement Club is actually fifteen-years-old.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/body_improvement.png
Left to right: Hiroshi, Jun, Hideki and Ryohei

A group of good-hearted lads who are dedicated to improving their physical fitness through exercising and intense training.

  • Academic Athlete: Jun is revealed to rank number 2 among Salt Middle's Academic Rankings, showing that he has excellent grades on top of being physically fit.
  • Berserk Button: They will become hostile if anyone tries to hurt their club member Mob.
  • Delinquent Hair: Hiroshi has a blond mohawk and Ryohei has an exceptionally pointy hairstyle. But they're far from delinquents once you get to know them.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Hideki has a dislike for bell peppers.
  • Dumb Muscle: Zigzagged. Jun is a full-on Academic Athlete, and while the rest aren't all that great with studies, each member has one or two subjects that they're good at.
  • Face of a Thug: Like Gouda, they look like delinquents, but are really just good guys who want to collaboratively bodybuild in peace. Ryohei in particular is almost a parody of a stereotypical Japanese Delinquent thanks to his absurdly huge, pointed pompadour.
  • Fantastically Indifferent: The Body Improvement club is fully aware that Mob is an extremely powerful esper who could crush all of them without lifting a finger; they just don't think it's all that big a deal.
  • Foil: To the Telepathy Club. While they're good-hearted kids who want to enjoy their youth, the BI Club is dedicated to daily training and improving their physical stamina. Compared to the Telepathy stooges who spend their days eating junk food, reading manga and playing video games.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Hiroshi is good at art and has the most work experience out of the club.
    • Jun has an interest in animals and dreams of being a veterinarian, and gets excellent grades.
    • Hideki is really great at singing.
  • Lovable Jock: Bless these boys, their hearts are as big as their bodies and they're always considerate and kind to each other and those around them.
  • Passing the Torch: In Chapter 101, Jun Sagawa becomes the new president of the club with Mob as his vice president.
  • Sixth Ranger: Tenga decides to become a permanent member of the club since they were the only ones to support him when he was being targeted by the student council.
  • Younger Than They Look: Just like their president, they're 14- to 15-year-old boys with the appearances of full grown adults.

    Ichi Mezato

Voiced by: Ayumi Fujimura, Yu Shimamura [3rd season](Japanese), Abby Trott (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ichi.png

"This is your chance to man up. What will you do, Mob?"

A member of the News Club who met Mob during her investigation on the LOL cult. Afterwards, she becomes a member of the Psycho Helmet cult, former members of LOL who see Mob as their savior and are on a search for him. She keeps pestering Mob to take over the cult, but also realizes that he's far from ready for such a role of leadership.

  • Adapted Out: She does not appear in the live action version in any capacity.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: Despite being in middle school, she's the main organizer of the Psycho Helmet cult with many of its members being adults.
  • Behind Every Great Man: Due to her desire of uplifting the Psycho Helmet Cult through it's messiah, Mezato puts alot of effort in pushing Mob to participate in important events that could potentially boost his popularity.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: While it's not the only reason she is helping the cult, Dimple points out that a large part of her desire to see Mob take his place as Lord Psycho Helmet is just because she wants to have played a part in such a massive event.
  • It Amused Me: A big reason why she wants Mob to take the role as the Psycho Helmet cult? It's just fun, she guesses.
  • Intrepid Reporter: She is first introduced infiltrating a shady cult in order to write a story about them.
  • It's All About Me: Mezato has an opportunistic streak in her, taking advantage of Mob's reputation and dreams to further her own.
  • Kid Detective: She likes investigating mysteries, and given that she finds out the truth about Mob but doesn't tell anyone seems to point to her liking the detective part of her job more than the reporter.
  • Secret-Keeper: A member of the Psycho Helmet cult, and the only one who knows that Psycho Helmet is actually Mob.

    Tenga Onigawara

Voiced by: Yoshimasa Hosoya (Japanese), Ray Chase (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tenga_7.png

The bancho of Salt Middle School. Despite his rough reputation, he has a perfect school attendance record.

  • Book Dumb: He's unfortunately second to last in his school's Academic Ranking system.
  • Bully Turned Buddy: He first uses and intimidates Mob enough that Ritsu decides to frame him and destroy his life. By the end of his arc, he comes to like and respect Mob enough that he ends up instantly forgiving Ritsu, simply because he's Mob's brother and Mob asked him to, and also joins his school club.
  • Delinquent Hair: Sports a "Regent" pompadour, and is a delinquent.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: He experiences this trope when a female classmate (and his only friend) believes Shinji and Ritsu's accusations of being a pervert, despite them being total bullshit.
  • Exhausted Eyebags: Has very prominent ones despite being a teenager.
  • Hated by All: Deconstructed. Because of his violent behavior, no one in the school likes him. His own friends aren't afraid to talk negatively about him to his face. He learned this the hard way when Shinji and Ritsu frame him for stealing the girls' recorder mouthpieces and licking them. Even if it was obvious that he's being set up, everyone hates him to the point that they don't care if he did it or not and just use this as an excuse to get rid of him. Even his friends won't talk to him after the incident, including his female childhood friend. He was so hurt by this that he stopped showing up to class, which ruined the perfect attendance record he was so proud of. Once he realized how much he was hated, he decides to change himself after the incident and he gets better once he joins the Body Improvement club.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After his suspension, Tengan decides to give up the bancho life and becomes part of the Body Improvement Club. However, he still has his ill-temper.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite his delinquent behavior, he's proud at maintaining his perfect attendance at school.
    • He also dreams of becoming a mangaka when he grows up.
  • Hot-Blooded: Is willing to punch someone at the first sign of provocation.
  • Japanese Delinquents: The story takes place in Japan, and he's a delinquent, so automatically he's this.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Despite (badly) lying that he doesn't care what people think during the School Cleanup, Onigawara skipping his classes tips off the Body Improvement club as to just how badly he was hurt by it.
  • Obsessed with Perfect Attendance: Despite his abyssmal grades, Tenga is proud of his perfect attendance record. That's why his skipping classes was a sign of how much the School Cleanup incident hurt him.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: The Oni Rush, a 16-hit string of punches. It's a Shout-Out to Josuke's stand Crazy Diamond. Very fitting considering they both sport the delinquent with a pompadour look.
  • Unprovoked Pervert Payback: He at one point is accused of stealing and licking recorder mouthpieces belonging to several female classmates, causing him to be seen as a pervert and verbally assaulted by the whole class. He was actually the target of a school-wide Frame-Up created by Ritsu and Shinji.
  • Worthy Opponent: Despite never facing him in direct combat, Tenga has deep respect for Mob's "shadow leader" power and refers to him as the strongest of them all.

    Shinji Kamuro

Voiced by: Koji Yusa (Japanese), Doug Erholtz (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shinji_kamuro_anime.png

The Student Council President of Salt Middle School.

  • Abusive Parents: Has strict, controlling parents and lives in the shadow of an arrogant brother who berates him constantly, which explains why Shinji looks and acts so shady.
  • Always Someone Better: His brother, apparently. The fact that his brother also emotionally abuses him doesn't help at all.
  • Arc Villain: Along with Ritsu, he's this for the Big Cleanup Arc.
  • The Atoner: He resigns from his position after the Big Cleanup goes out of control, admitting his mistake to the other students. They reelect him anyway.
  • Big Brother Bully: His older brother emotionally abuses him by constantly deriding his lack of talent and academic skill. Eventually when his brother realizes his constant berating statements are making Shinji perform worse rather than motivating Shinji to work harder and prove him wrong, he relents and begins trying to patch things up. His parents are still assholes, though.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: Has deep worry lines, with the undersides of his eyes being extremely dark. After he's removed from and reinstated to his position of Student Council President during the Big Cleanup, his resolve to be a better person makes his face look much healthier. Parodied later when, upon seeing his healthier face, one of the council members yells "President! I see you stopped wearing eyeshadow!"
  • Jerkass: He instigated the Big Cleanup of Salt Middle School so he can vent his frustrations over being the target of his family's emotional abuse and feel better about himself. He even laughs at the suffering he caused.
  • Knight Templar: As Student Council President he takes great issue with the delinquents of Salt Mid.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Ritsu, increasingly disgusted with Shinji's actions, leaves him to be beaten up by the very school delinquents he wrongfully framed. His face is disfigured with bruises afterwards.
  • The Resenter: Unable to fight back against his Big Brother Bully, he projects that resentment onto the School Idol, Ritsu, and sets him up to be The Scapegoat of the Big Cleanup.
  • Student Council President: His role in the school, until he resigns after the Big Cleanup. Double Subverted as he ends up reelected anyway.
  • Trash of the Titans: His bedroom, which is brimming with trash bags.
  • The Unfavorite: Is constantly treated like crap by his parents and brother for not being talented or smart, which screwed him up badly. He still ranks very highly in his class.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: To drive away all the delinquents of Salt Mid, Kamuro and Ritsu frame them for perverted thefts and scandals, from which they couldn't defend themselves due to their reputation for violence. Ritsu, however, argues he's just doing it to relieve the stress he gets from his abusive family.

    Emi

Voiced by: Eriko Matsui (Japanese), Jeannie Tirado (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/emi_57.png

An aspiring writer who becomes Mob's "girlfriend" after the Salt Middle School election.

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Thanks to Mob reconstructing her novel with his miracle power along with his vow of cherishing what's important to him, Emi rekindles her love of writing and decides not to let her "friends" influence her anymore.
  • Bookworm: She loves reading and dreams of becoming a professional author one day.
  • Brutal Honesty: When she comes clean about the bet to Mob, she also points out how the boy is quite a pushover as he doesn't have his own opinions and just does whatever people tell him to do (ex. him participating in the election despite having no interest in it).
  • Just Friends: She and Mob ultimately become this at the end of her arc.
  • The Muse: Inverted. After her miraculous encounter with Mob, Emi decides to base her next writing project on a boy with psychic powers.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Downplayed. During the Divine Tree Arc, she points out to Mob how a lot of girls are starting to show interest in him which leads the esper to become more full of himself, resulting in 100% Getting Carried Away.
  • With Friends Like These...: She doesn't have the best support group. It's because of them that she went out with Mob due to losing a bet between them. And afterwards, they make fun of her writing talent and tear up the novel she was working on all while laughing about it.

    Momozou Takenaka (Spoilers)

Voiced by: Ikuji Nose (Japanese), Jon Allen (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_7fe2971417601d2ca314aae2d5c7701f_82249e2e_1280.jpg

A former member of the Telepathy Club who is later revealed to be an esper. His quitting the club directly led to their disbandment.

  • Betty and Veronica: Is interested in Tsubomi, and his haughtiness and concern for appearances vs Mob's earnest attempts at self-improvement make him the Veronica to Mob's Betty and Tsubomi's Archie.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He appears in the last episode of Season 2 in a crowd shot taking a gander at the giant broccoli tree.
  • I'm Not Pretty: In one omake, he notices other students leering at him suspicously from a distance. Suspecting that they planned to ambush and bully him, he decides to read their mind so he can plan out a defense strategy. Turns out, they just thought he was cute, a fact which he has no idea what to do with.
  • Hidden Depths: Starts off appearing like some kind of Jerk Jock and at first just finds the Telepathy Club's interest in trying to contact aliens foolhardy. But through a pep talk from Mob he partakes in their mission and slowly comes out of his shell, he even goes out of his way to actually memorize the incantation ritual to summon the aliens (even if he knows it isn't real).
  • Irony: The person whose resignation led to the Telepathy Club's disbandment turns out to be a telepath himself.
  • Jerk Jock: Shows up to the Telepathy Club and mocks them for being freaks during their first real push at finding other Telepaths. In the meantime, he's joined the Tennis Club which, while not a stereotypically Jock-ish activity, is still a sports club. Although this gets downplayed later on once he helps the club in contacting extra terrestrials, not only does he get swept up in the group's camaraderie but he also takes the trip and mission seriously.
  • A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Read: Grew jaded with his telepathy due to how aware it made him of the disconnect between peoples' words and thoughts.
  • My Skull Runneth Over: His telepathy originally had this drawback, and he related a story where he couldn't sleep due to all the thoughts and emotions of his neighborhood blaring in his skull during a huge soccer match. He eventually learned to block out other thoughts.
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: The only real aversion among the Telepathy Club, as he originally joined hoping it would be a support group for telepaths like himself, only to find that no one really cared about studying psychic powers except Tome, and even she spends most of her time being swept away by the laziness of the other members.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: Just like the rest of the Telepathy Club boys, he is named after the characters from Momotarō. In this case, the titular character himself. It's no wonder he turned out to be the most important (ex)member of the club.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He's a secondary character in the grand scheme of things, but it's due to him leaving that the Telepathy Club reaches out to Mob in the hopes of saving their club.
  • Telepathy: On a much stronger level than the Shiratori Brothers, being able to read and transmit thoughts among the people around him.
  • Translator Buddy: A variant, his telepathy allows him to tell his group what the Aliens are thinking, their intentions and how they feel.
  • Walking Spoiler: Originally his only role in the story was starting the chain of events that led to Mob meeting the Telepathy Club and joining the Body Improvement Club. After the Divine Tree Arc, he gains a much more prominent role.

    The Transfer Student (Spoilers)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/d02ef5ab_5c85_4b66_927b_e10b56f98745.jpeg
A transfer student who starts classes at around the same time the "Devourer" begins killing people. With the end of the series, his fate remains unknown.
  • Adapted Out: His mini-arc doesn't get adapted in the anime.
  • From a Single Cell: Reigen and Mob have both destroyed his Devourer body, but he seems to come back from it every time.
  • Humanoid Abomination: Looks like a middle school student but is an immensely powerful entity who kills people in their dreams.
  • Too Spicy for Yog-Sothoth: Traps a powerless Mob in a dream world like his other victims, only for ???% to emerge and obliterate his "Devourer" form. He actually leaves town out of fear of Mob, telling the latter he is "not normal".
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: He was driven out of town, but never properly exorcised.

Awakening Lab

    Kenji Mitsuura

A young man who hails from a wealthy family. Kenji Mitsuura (密裏賢治; Mitsuura Kenji) is the founder of the Awakening Lab, hoping to awaken psychic abilities in normal people such as himself and others.

  • Funny Afro: He has a light brown afro.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Does research on Esper power so he can learn how to awaken it in normal people such as himself. Ritsu noted how foolish his dream is.
  • Nice Guy: His desire to be an esper notwithstanding, Kenji's really friendly and sociable. He's also really attached to the esper kids who came to the Awakening Lab to learn how to wield psychic abilities and is distraught after they are kidnapped by Claw.
  • Non-Action Guy: Due to him not having psychic powers, or being willing to face villains head on like Reigen, Kenji can only contribute so much when fighting Claw.
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: Despite coming from a wealthy background and being able to do so much with his resources, Kenji is more interested in pioneering the development of psychic powers in non-espers.

Rei Kurosaki (黑崎麗; Kurosaki Rei) is one of the participants of the Awakening Lab, who was revealed to have psychic powers.

  • Curtains Match the Window: Sort of. Her hair is light brown, but her eyes are a darker shade of the same color.
  • Pink Means Feminine: She wears a pink track suit, and is a girl.
  • Psychic Powers: ESP — she has an extremely great chance at knowing what to do or where to go. It's not infallible, but she's able to complete a test of picking a specific card out of 10 with 60% accuracy, which is noted to be rather impressive. She later uses her ESP to help her friends and Ritsu escape captivity after they were kidnapped by Claw.
  • Seers: Is shown in her debut to possess clairvoyant/ESP abilities. She later uses them to help Ritsu and her friends escape captivity after they are kidnapped by Claw.

    Takeshi Hoshino

Takeshi Hoshino (星野武史; Hoshino Takeshi) is one of the participants of the Awakening Lab, who was revealed to have psychic powers.

  • Bishie Sparkle: Sometimes appears with these.
  • Blatant Lies: Clearly overestimated how powerful his telekinesis is, when viewers know he can only bend spoons (albeit with great difficulty).
  • Delinquent Hair: Sports a downwards pompadour that covers one of his eyes.
  • Elvis Impersonator: His pompadour and white, high-collared outfit make him appear as one.
  • High Collar of Doom: Subverted, as he is not evil despite his outfit having a high collar.
  • Psychic Powers: Telekinesis, but on a much less impressive scale than that of the main characters. Under Teruki's guidance, he was able to increase his powers beyond mere spoon-bending and can lift up to 10 kilograms.
    • At least in the anime, he has trained to the point he is stronger than the artificial espers he was once hopelessly outclassed by. He and Gou even coordinate to whip up an impressive fire tornado. He’s still weak compared to most other espers, but he’s no longer pathetically so.

    Gou Asahi

Gou Asahi (朝日豪; Asahi Gō) is one of the participants of the Awakening Lab, who was revealed to have psychic powers.

  • Blatant Lies: Clearly overestimated how powerful his pyrokinesis is, when viewers know he can barely ignite a spark.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Has blonde hair. Also one of the more heroic characters.
  • In the Hood: Wears a light blue hoodie, but it's subverted in that he never has the actual hood on.
  • Playing with Fire: What his powers are revealed to be.
  • Psychic Powers: Pyrokinesis, but not very well developed — though he has enough power to melt a spoon. Under Teruki's guidance, he's able to increase his powers to beyond a spark.
    • In the anime he was able to create a vicious looking fire tornado with the help of Takeshi, showing he’s a real, if somewhat still underwhelming, pyrokinetic now.

Kaito

Daichi and Kaito Shiratori (白鳥大地&白鳥海斗) are twin brothers. They proved instrumental in helping Mob and his friends defeat the Claw Organization via their psychic powers.

  • The Bus Came Back: After being partly forgotten during the Second Claw Arc in favor of showing the other Awakening Lab Students, the brothers get a bit of solo screen time following the Divine Tree Arc where they finally interact with the people who'd be most interested in them: the Telepathy Club.
  • Hidden Eyes: Their eyes are always hidden by their glasses.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: They would've looked exactly the same if it weren't their wearing different clothes and their physical appearances being based on two different shapes (Daichi's is a circle, while Kaito's is a square).
  • Psychic Powers: Twin Telepathy. They eventually manage to train under Teruki enough to use their powers to act as a Living Lie Detector against another, much more powerful Esper, though they still can't directly read or transmit anyone's thoughts but each other's.
  • Spanner in the Works: Their shared telepathy lets them see through Claw's plans to fake their deaths and drive Ritsu's group to despair so the kids could be brainwashed into becoming Claw soldiers.
  • Telepathy: What the twins have. At first, they just have Twin Telepathy, but thanks to Teruki they learn how to mind-read others as well. That said, they can't really send their thoughts to anyone else, as it just sounds like an annoying ringing in their ears.
