The Allies of Zendikar

    Vorik

Race: Human

Former leader of the militia of Sea Gate, he became the Commander-General of the refuges of Sea Gate and the Sea Gate forces after the rise of the Eldrazi.

  • Killed Off for Real: Mortally wounded by a Eldrazi of Ulamog's lineage in a skirmish. Vorik's death leads to Gideon's promotion as his successor.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: While he is only featured in a few Uncharted Realms articles, Vorik's decision to name Gideon rather than Tazri as Commander-General to succeed him plays an important role in the story and the overall strategy of the allied army of Zendikar as Gideon decided to liberate Sea Gate from the hordes of Eldrazi while Tazri opted for a more defensive option by attempting to find a safe haven.

    Tazri

Color: White (primary), 5 color
Race: Human
Class: Ally, Warrior

A once famed caravan guard captain of the Tazeem roads, who fell on bad times due to a curse set upon her when she agreed to mercy kill a heavily wounded angel who fought against a group of vampires. After killing the angel, Tazri suffered from a series of bad caravan jobs and lost much of her credibility as a guard. Eventually, she joined up with the Sea Gate militia group led by Vorik and became his second-in-command.

After the Eldrazi overran Sea Gate, Vorik became the leader of the survivors with Tazri as his second-in-command. When Vorik succumbed to his wounds from a skirmish with the Eldrazi, he chose Gideon as his successor instead of Tazri, to her dismay and shock. Tazri is now a leading officer and a general of the allied armies.

  • The Ace: She was a famed caravan guard before the age of twenty and an expert swordsman.
  • Broken Ace: After the angel incident.
  • Curse: She was said to be cursed due to killing an angel.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Was unable to find purpose or value in herself after her series of failed caravan jobs until she met Vorik who believed in her and helped her. In fact, it is suggested that she has sought a purpose her whole life if the visions caused by Kozilek are to be believed.
  • Four-Star Badass: Vorik's second-in-command and one of Gideon's leading commanders.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Towards Gideon, who was named successor by a dying Vorik. This is made more evident in her hallucinations caused by Kozilek as she felt happiness when she witnessed Kozilek crush Gideon in its hand in the vision.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Suffered from this after a series of failed caravan jobs until she met Vorik who saw potential in her.
  • Mercy Kill: Killed an heavily wounded angel who begged Tazri for death to avoid a slow and painful fate at the hands of the vampires she was battling.
  • Mind Rape: Due to Kozilek's reality warping presence. However, the experiences and visions caused by Kozilek's distortions ultimately help her grow as a leader and move on from her curse.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Even though the angel had asked for the Mercy Kill, killing her still caused Tazri to become cursed.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Tazri keeps the halo of the angel she mercy killed and wears it around her neck.
  • You Are in Command Now: When Gideon goes missing after the emergence of Kozilek and the allied forces are routed, Tazri resolves to take command in his stead and rallies the remaining forces left. Is eventually given the position of Commander-General permanently after the final battle against Kozilek and Ulamog as Gideon cannot stay on Zendikar forever due to his obligations to the Gatewatch.

    Drana

Color: Black
Race: Vampire
Class: Shaman, Ally, Cleric

The ancient and powerful bloodchief of the Kalastria vampires, the wealthiest of the five vampire families of Malakir on Zendikar. Drana foiled Kalitas's plot to turn all of the vampires of Malakir into thralls of the Eldrazi, taking Malakir back from House Ghet and driving out Kalitas. However, Drana's victory was short-lived as the Eldrazi pushed her and her subjects out of the city. As such, she led her people away from Malakir to seek a refuge from the ever-growing horde of Eldrazi. Most vampires have either joined Drana or Kalitas after the rise of the Eldrazi.

Drana joined her forces with Gideon when news reached her that he was assembling an army to liberate Sea Gate from the Eldrazi, she became one of his leading commanders during the retaking of Sea Gate.

  • The Ageless: A few thousand years old at this point.
  • Anti-Hero: Has become this as of the Battle for Zendikar block, being forced to work alongside the mortal races against the Eldrazi.
  • Badass Cape: Wears one in both her cards.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Is willing to employ orphans as child soldiers against the Eldrazi and allow the Kors sent by Gideon to selflessly sacrifice themselves as distractions to the Eldrazi to cover her retreat.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Not entirely evil at least, she's willing to work alongside the other mortal races and take orders from Gideon (and from Tazri, after Gideon goes missing).
  • Heroic Willpower: Is able to break out of an Eldrazi's attempt to enslave her through her sheer will alone.
  • It's All About Me: In a good way, sort of. Drana channels the power of a Eldrazi she absorbed into her forces, and resolves to fight for her people and subjects rather than planeswalking away with said Eldrazi power as she believes that they belong to her (and as such, it is her duty to protect everything that is hers).
  • Last of Her Kind: Drana is one of the two known remaining bloodchiefs alive (the other being Kalitas). The bloodchiefs were originally humanoids transformed by a magical Eldrazi disease and numbered in the hundreds, but were cut down to only around a dozen in the years before the Eldrazi were freed.
  • Monster Lord: Leader of the Kalastria vampire clan.
  • Really 700 Years Old: One of the oldest vampires of Zendikar, she has lived for thousands of years, but she doesn't look any older than a woman in her mid-to-late 20s.
  • Status Buff: Empowers her forces with the energy of a Eldrazi she absorbed in one Uncharted Realms article. Drana also buffs her entire board in one of her actual cards when she deals combat damage to a player.
  • The Fog of Ages: Drana has trouble remember much of her memories with clarity due to her longevity, the only thing she clearly remembers is her commitment of serving no one.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: One of the original vampires, which were humanoids who were contaminated by a infection of Eldrazi origin.
  • Vampire Monarch: As bloodchief of House Kalastria.

    Noyan Dar

Color: White and Blue
Race: Merfolk
Class: Ally

Formerly a powerful merfolk lullmage (a wizard able to calm and control the force of the dangerous and terrain-altering Roils of Zendikar) and iconoclastic scholar at the Sea Gate lighthouse. Noyan Dar is now a roilmage who uses his powers to rouse Zendikar's Roils to combat the Eldrazi threat, and the founder and leader of the new merfolk capital of Coralheim Refuge. He also has a small number of apprentice roilmages under his tutelage.

Noyan Dar and his roilmages are recruited by Gideon to join his united force to retake Sea Gate from the Eldrazi after Gideon personally comes to visit him.

  • Badass Bookworm: Formerly a iconoclastic scholar from the Sea Gate lighthouse, and now a leader of Coralheim Refuge who fights the Eldrazi on a almost daily basis.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He was pretty snarky to Gideon when Gideon came to recruit him.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: As a lullmage, he has the ability to create earthquakes and such by rousing the Roils of Zendikar.
  • Elemental Powers: Able to create earthquakes and such by riling up the Roils.
  • Heroic BSoD: Suffers from a minor one after finding out most of his roilmages are dead after the allied forces are routed by the Eldrazi. However, Tazri is able to get Noyan to regain his composure and channel his anger into fighting the Eldrazi.
  • Ignored Expert: According to the Art of Magic the Gathering: Zendikar book, Noyan Dar had hypothesized from his studies that the merfolk deities (distorted memories of the three Eldrazi Titans) were destroyers and not benevolent beings. He received much criticism from his academic peers at the time.
  • Our Mermaids Are Different: Zendikari merfolks are bipedal as opposed to having fishtail body.
  • The Rival: He has been rivals with Thada Adel since their school days in the Merfolk Enclave when he tried to recruit her into his circle of cronies; she took an instant dislike to him and has been enemies with him ever since.

    Munda

Color: Red and White
Race: Kor
Class: Ally

A kor who is a close friend of Gideon. While it is unknown what Munda did before the Eldrazi were freed, he now serves as a leading figure of the survivors. Munda is called "The Spider" by his allies for his great skill with ropes for trapping and immobilizing enemies. Gideon appointed Munda as a squad leader during the retaking of Sea Gate.

  • Badass Normal: Fights Eldrazi with nothing but ropes and a pair of sickles. Munda isn't a planeswalker like Gideon, vampire like Drana, or wizard like Noyan Dar either.
  • Colonel Badass: Badass and one of Gideon's officers.
  • Frontline General: One of Gideon's leading officers and often found on the frontlines fighting the Eldrazi.
  • Red Baron: Called "the Spider" by the allied forces of Zendikar.

    Jori En

Color: Blue and Red
Race: Merfolk
Class: Wizard

A archaeologist and friend of Kendrin, a human scholar who had been close to cracking the "puzzle of the leylines," who was killed by the Eldrazi when they invaded Sea Gate. This puzzle was believed to be crucial as it may allow the Zendakaris to understand how the magic of the hedrons could be used—and turned into a weapon against the Eldrazi.

Jori En, trapped at Sea Gate due to the Eldrazi attack, was rescued by Gideon and his forces due to her importance as she knew something about the puzzle of the leylines. Afterwards, she continued the work of her late friend and continues to crack the puzzle, hoping that it will ultimately prove to be Zendikar's salvation from the Eldrazi.

  • Adventurer Archaeologist: Jori En is a relic hunter, as such, she ventures into old ruins.
  • Married to the Job: "Some relic hunters have given up exploring and gone to fight the Eldrazi. But I know our work is more important than ever. The secrets we uncover could lead to the world's salvation."
  • Our Mermaids Are Different: Zendikari merfolks are bipedal as opposed to having fishtail body.

    Zada

Color: Red
Race: Goblin
Class: Ally

A goblin who is somewhat knowledgeable about the hedrons due to the fact she grinds them up and eats them, something that makes the goblins of Zendikar stronger. Zada overthrew the leader of the Tuktuk goblin tribe, Tuktuk, by convincing the other goblins of the tribe that Tuktuk had been contaminated by the Eldrazi and was a dangerously unreliable leader. She shattered him into many pieces and became the new leader of the tribe.

She encountered Jace when he was making his way to the Eye of Ugin in his jounrey to crack the puzzle of the leylines.

  • Eat Dirt, Cheap: Zada, like many goblins of Zendikar, eat grinded up rocks as it makes them stronger.
  • Status Buff: Gameplay-wise, her card can buff all your creatures with instant and sorcery spells you cast targeting her.
  • The Usurper: Convinced the goblins of the her tribe to overthrow their leader Tuktuk.

Eldrazi-aligned Characters

    Kalitas

Color: Black
Race: Vampire
Class: Warrior

The bloodchief of the Ghet vampires, formerly the poorest and least powerful of the vampire families of Malakir on Zendikar.

Unlike Drana, Kalitas seeks to aid the Eldrazi and plotted to turn all the vampires of Malakir into thralls of the Eldrazi. However, due to Drana's interference, he and his clan were driven from the city. Most vampires have either joined Drana or Kalitas after the rise of the Eldrazi.

  • The Ageless: Presumably, if Drana is any indicator.
  • Face–Monster Turn: Both of his in-game cards do this to other creatures, turning them into vampires or nulls (faceless zombies) under his control.
  • Last of His Kind: Kalitas is one of the two known remaining bloodchiefs alive (the other being Drana). The bloodchiefs were originally humanoids transformed by a magical Eldrazi disease and numbered in the hundreds, but were cut down to only around a dozen in the years before the Eldrazi were freed.
  • Monster Lord: Leader of the Ghet vampire clan.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Comes with being a vampire and a bloodchief.
  • The Quisling: Has the title of "thrall of Ulamog" and "Traitor of Ghet" due to his submission to the Eldrazi.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: The vampires of Zendikar are not the traditional undead bloodsuckers, they're actually descended from humanoids who were infected by an Eldrazi-created disease meant to turn humanoids into servants of the Eldrazi.
  • Vampire Monarch: The bloodchief of House Ghet.

    Ayli

Color: White and Black
Race: Kor
Class: Cleric

A kor who was a cleric of the goddess Kamsa or Emeria, the long lost and warped memory of the Eldrazi Titan Emrakul. After the rise of the Eldrazi and the revelation that the Zendikari gods were actually false interpretations of the Eldrazi Titans, Ayli has become the high priest of a cult that worships the Eldrazi called Eternal Pilgrims.

  • Go Mad from the Revelation: A possible interpretation of her character.
  • Religion of Evil: The Eternal Pilgrims are this, they worship the Eldrazi and kidnap survivors and offer them to the Eldrazi. They attempted to offer Jori En and Jace as living sacrifices to Ulamog when the two were making their way to the Eye of Ugin. It is also said in the Art of Magic the Gathering: Zendikar book that the Eternal Pilgrims perform raids on survivor camps.

Others

    Anowon

Color: Black (primary), Blue
Race: Vampire
Class: Shaman, Rogue

The scion of a powerful vampire family in Malakir and an renown expert on ruins, runes, and ancient languages. In his relentless search for answers, he has left a trail of corpses. He is seen as a powerful mage, knowledgeable scholar, and notable expedition leader in some settlements; but, some regard him as a murderer and ruthless power seeker. Despite whatever opinions others may have of him, most can agree that he is respected by friend and foe alike.

While initially a "son" of the House Ghet under the tutelage of Bloodchief Tenihas, he eventually left, leaving Tenihas and the bloodchief's retinue slaughtered with the only survivor claiming that Anowon killed the bloodchief in rage. It is believed that this was the result of growing animosity between Anowon and Tenihas over ancient texts that alluded the enslavement of the vampire race by "famished gods," most likely the Eldrazi.

Anowon spent the following decades as a mercenary and expeditionary leader until he found a powerful scroll now known as the "Dragon's Fire." After this event, he renounced his loyalty to the expeditionary house he served and he disappeared. He assumed a new identity as a human scholar at the Sea Gate lighthouse and attempted to find the Eye of Ugin. However, after an event that exposed his identity as a vampire, he was nearly beaten to death and ousted from Sea Gate by some of the residents. He eventually established his own league of explorers, adventurers, and mages to help in his search of the Eye of Ugin. Inadvertently, Anowon aided in the release of the Eldrazi by leading both Chandra and Jace to the Eye of Ugin.

After the release of the Eldrazi by Chandra, Jace, and Sarkhan, Anowon became enslaved by the Eldrazi broods until he was freed by Nissa Revane and Sorin Markov. He then accompanied the two planeswalkers to the eye of Ugin; however, after Nissa freed the Eldrazi Titans they fled together to Affa where they parted ways with Anowon retreating back to his league and beginning to rebuild it.

  • Adventurer Archaeologist: Many on Zendikar find themselves with this occupation.
  • Badass Bookworm: A notable scholar and powerful mage.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Betrayed House Ghet, the expedition house he was working for, and Chandra.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: While the benevolence of Anowon varied depending on who you asked, he became more cutthroat after being beaten almost to death by the angry folk at Sea Gate.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: The vampires of Zendikar are not the traditional undead bloodsuckers, they're actually descended from humanoids who were infected by an Eldrazi-created disease meant to turn humanoids into servants of the Eldrazi.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Led both Chandra and Jace to the Eye of Ugin, as Nicol Bolas had planned. This ultimately weakened the prison that held the Eldrazi when Chandra, Jace, and Sarkhan met at the Eye and unwittingly unleashed the Eldrazi broods onto Zendikar.

    Iona

Color: White
Race: Angel

A powerful archangel and minor deity of sorts who refuses to let the Eldrazi ravage Zendikar. Strangely enough, unlike many of her brethren who wear their searing halos over their eyes as a reminder of their unpreparedness when the Eldrazi first re-emerged, she does not wear a halo over her eyes. Due to her notable power and importance, she is ironically associated with the Zendikari god Emeria (who is a distorted interpretation of Emrakul) and is called the "Shield of Emeria."

After the release of the Eldrazi, Iona has left her post to combat them. To this day, Iona continues to defend Zendikar from the Eldrazi that seek to destroy it.

  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Even compared to most other Zendikari angels (and for that matter most other life forms in Zendikar), she is utterly gigantic.
  • BFS: Although Iona's sword is somewhat reasonable for her size, she's big as a mountain... so her sword's pretty large.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: Iona's in-game card's ability to prevent casting spells of a certain color doesn't work against the colorless Eldrazi cards; this displays the fact that her formidable power does nothing to fend off the colorless magic of the Eldrazi.
  • Glowing Eyes: Although not a characteristic of all Zendikari angels, Iona has them.
  • Guardian Angel: Iona, like most Zendikari angels, is sworn to stand for justice and righteousness.
  • Large and in Charge: Iona is one of the most powerful angels on Zendikar whose hand is bigger than an average human.
  • Mystical White Hair: A powerful angel with white hair.
  • Power Nullifier: Iona's card is able to prevent the casting of all spells of a named color.
  • Red Baron: Known as the "Shield of Emeria" by most Zendikari, she traditionally stood guard over the passage to the Sky Ruin, which is believed to have once been the home of the goddess Emeria.

    Linvala

Color: White (primary), Blue
Race: Angel
Class: Ally, Wizard

Another notable angel of Zendikar. Similar to Iona, Linvala chooses not to put a halo over her eyes. As the Eldrazi Titans and their broods reemerged on Zendikar, Linvala has begun combating them along with the other angels.

    Thada Adel

Color: Blue
Race: Merfolk
Class: Rogue

A former merfolk adventurer and scholar before the Eldrazi were freed, she now leads Tikal Harborage, a large merfolk outpost half-submerged in a pool upriver from Sea Gate.

  • Adventurer Archaeologist: An adventurer and relic seeker.
  • Our Mermaids Are Different: Zendikari merfolks are bipedal as opposed to having fishtail body.
  • The Rival: She has been rivals with Noyan Dar since their school days in the Merfolk Enclave when he tried to recruit her into his circle of cronies. Thada took an instant dislike to him and has been enemies with him ever since.

    Tuktuk

Color: Colorless (formerly Red)
Race: Golem (formerly Goblin)

The leader of the Tuktuk tribe of goblins, he was known as a brave explorer. Tuktuk was forever changed during one of his explorations into an ancient ruin in which he emerged as a stone golem of sorts. Somehow, a magical trap in the ruins remade his body into stone and implanted his memories into said body. Tuktuk returned to his tribe and would lead it for five decades until Zala convinced the tribe to overthrow and kill him.

  • The Ageless: After he was turned into a golem of some sort.
  • Adventurer Archaeologist: Was one during his days as a goblin.
  • Killed Off for Real: He's killed sometime before the Battle for Zendikar block when Zada usurps him by convincing his tribe that he was contaminated by the Eldrazi.
  • Made of Iron: Literally, being now a metallic golem impervious to damage.
  • Psychic Powers: Can communicate telepathically.
  • Rock Monster: He was a goblin before he got turned into a living, goblin-shaped construct of stone after triggering a magical trap.
  • Telepathy: Gained telepathy to communicate with others after he got turned into a golem.
  • The Speechless: Being turned into stone golem without a mouth resulted in him being this.

    Omnath

Color: Green (primary), 5 Color
Race: Phyrexian Elemental

A elemental that is a powerful manifestation of the wild and chaotic mana of Zendikar, said to be able to cause great destruction. Initially sealed away on a high mesa of Ondu, Omnath was ultimately broke free from his prison in response to the Eldrazi Titans ravaging Zendikar.

  • All Your Powers Combined: By the time of invasion of New Phyrexia, Omnath embodies all five colors of mana. The black mana is Phyrexian mana. Omnath is compleat.
  • The Berserker: While its rage is aimed towards the Eldrazi, Omnath will not hesitate to destroy other beings in its path.
  • Elemental Embodiment: Omnath is an elemental embodiment of Zendikar's mana.
  • Nature Spirit: Omnath is a manifestation of Zendikar's mana.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Not necessarily evil, but Omnath was sealed away in a prison for an unknown reason and is kept sealed due to the belief that it would cause mass destruction if freed.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Omnath is rampaging against the Eldrazi and manifesting the mana of Zendikar as elementals in response to the Eldrazi and their draining of Zendikar.

    Lorthos

Color: Blue
Race: Octopus

A large monstrous octopus who lives in the oceans of Zendikar, the merfolk of the plane believed Lorthos controlled the tide.

Lorthos was summoned by Kiora after the Aligned Hedron Network that held Ulamog fell apart and Kozilek emerged from under ground due to Ob Nixilis's interference. After being summoned from the deep seas, Lorthos began to battle the emerged Kozilek and was quickly killed by the Eldrazi Titan.

  • Back for the Dead: Returns in one Battle for Zendikar block Uncharted Realms article and is ripped in half by Kozilek as a display of the titan's overwhelming power.
  • Giant Squid: One of the largest on Zendikar actually, Lorthos is so large that it is said he can control the tides with his movements.
  • Kaiju: A really giant octopus, he's big enough to match Kozilek in size. It even gets into a giant monster fight with Kozilek, although this goes very poorly for Lorthos.

    Akiri, Zareth, Orah and Kaza

Color: Red-White (Akiri), Blue-Black (Zareth), White-Black (Orah), Blue-Red (Kaza)
Race: Kor (Akiri and Orah), Merfolk (Zareth), Human (Kaza)
Class: Warrior/Soldier/Ally (Akiri), Rogue (Zareth), Cleric (Orah), Wizard (Kaza)

An adventuring party that Nahiri recruited to help her recover a mysterious artifact known as a Lithoform Core.

  • Fantasy Character Classes: The group are based on the Party-mechanic, which was again based on a typical D&D-style adventuring party:
    • Akiri is a Warrior
    • Zareth is a Rogue
    • Orah is a Cleric
    • Kaza is a Wizard
  • Properly Paranoid: Zareth's concern that Nahiri's goals of "restoring" Zendikar are mainly selfish, as he worries that there will be no place for adventurers in the restored world, but he is right to worry: While Nahiri has good intentions, her lithoforming will be dangerously detrimental to Zendikar's ecosystem.
  • Taken for Granite: Nahiri accidentally petrifies Zareth in the Zendikar Rising trailer, although she doesn't seem particularily concerned.
