A list of characters who appear in LEGO Racers.

Main characters

Rocket Racer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lr_rocket_racer.png
The greatest racer of them all, Rocket Racer has brought together some of the greatest heroes and villains from LEGO history to complete in his championship. After he is defeated for the first time, he begins the Galactic Racing Championship on Xalax.

Veronica Voltage

Veronica Voltage is the host of the Time Trials in LEGO Racers.

  • Everyone Is Related: She is the granddaughter of Professor Ignatius Voltage. This would've come full circle in LEGO Racers 2 with Professor Voltage as The Mentor, but he was replaced with Sparky before the game's release.
  • Never Bareheaded: Averted. The intro to the N64 version of Lego Racers shows her without her helmet.
  • Original Generation: Veronica Voltage is not based upon any physical LEGO minifigure.
  • Racing Ghost: Since she appears in the Time Trials, her car is intangible, unlike all other CPU racers. This means she cannot collide with the player's car, she is immune to red brick powerups, and any powerups she picks up are still available to the player.
  • Superboss: In the main story, she only appears to introduce you to Rocket Racer. The Time Trials are an optional side mode where the player must face her on every racetrack, and she is easily the toughest opponent in the game since she takes advantage of shortcuts and warp powerups.
  • The Unfought: She's this in the main story, and can only be raced against in Time Trial.

Sparky

The player's guide and mentor throughout LEGO Racers 2.

  • The Mentor: Sparky guides and teaches the player as they learn the mechanics of LEGO Racers 2 and gives them tips on every race.
  • Original Generation: Sparky is not based upon any physical LEGO minifigure.

Bosses

Captain Redbeard

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lr_captain_redbeard.png
The notorious buccaneer from LEGO Pirates, Captain Redbeard is the Hosting Champion of Circuit 1.

  • Dub Name Change: Also known as Kaptajn Rogernote  (Danish) and Kapitein Knoestnote  (Netherlands).
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: While not always a villain in LEGO Pirates, Captain Redbeard seems perfectly fine putting aside his differences with Governor Broadside and competing in a friendly race.
  • Pirate: Captain Redbeard is a pirate from the LEGO Pirates theme.
  • Talk Like a Pirate: Captain Redbeard begins his intro by saying "Arr," and he calls you "matey."

King Kahuka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lr_king_kahuka.png
The king of the Indigo Islanders from LEGO Pirates, King Kahuka is the Hosting Champion of Circuit 2.

  • Dub Name Change: Also known as Rey Uka Shaka Ukanote  (Spanish) and Kong Kanukanote  (Danish).
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: King Kahuka constantly spams the shield power-up, making him practically invincible to projectiles and hazards.
  • You No Take Candle: He speaks in simple broken English, fitting his stereotypical native appearance.

Basil the Bat Lord

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lr_basil_the_bat_lord.png
The creepy lord of the Fright Knights from LEGO Castle, Basil the Bat Lord is the Hosting Champion of Circuit 3.

  • Dub Name Change: Also known as Grev Flagermusnote  (Danish) and Floris de Vleermuisriddernote  (Dutch).
  • Fangs Are Evil: Basil's alternate facial expressions depict him with a pair of vampire fangs.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: According to the American storyline, Basil is a villain who is willing to engage in a friendly racing competition. According to the European storyline, Basil is a hero who is willing to compete in friendly races with his villainous arch-enemy Willa the Witch.
  • Ominous Opera Cape: He appears wearing a cape during his intro cutscene to cement his creepy vampire-esque appearance, though he does not wear it in the races.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: One of his alternate facial expressions depicts him with red eyes.
  • Spell My Name With An S: On the results screen and in his intro cutscene, Basil the Bat Lord's name is written as "Basil the Batlord" (though, oddly enough, it is written "Bat Lord" on the main menu).

Johnny Thunder

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lr_johnny_thunder.png
The brave explorer from LEGO Adventurers, Johnny Thunder is the Hosting Champion of Circuit 4. He reappears in LEGO Racers 2 as a regular racer.

  • Degraded Boss: In LEGO Racers, Johnny Thunder is a boss racer. In LEGO Racers 2, he is just an ordinary racer.
  • Dub Name Change: Also known as Jonny Exploradornote  (Spanish) in the first game.

Baron von Barron / Sam Sanister

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lr_baron_von_barron.png
The greedy treasure hunter from LEGO Adventurers, Baron von Barron is the Hosting Champion of Circuit 5. He reappears in LEGO Racers 2 as Sam Sanister, now the boss racer of Adventurers Dino Island.

  • Dub Name Change: Also known as Barón von Tyssennote  (Spanish) and Mr. Hates (Danish) in the first game.
  • Fragile Speedster: In LEGO Racers 2, Sam Sanister's Island Racer is one of the fastest cars in the game and can easily leave you in the dust. However, unlike Riegel's Red Planet Protector or the Berg, it is vulnerable to items and can even be destroyed like any regular racer's car.
  • Funetik Aksent: In LEGO Racers, Baron von Barron's text is spelled with V's instead of W's and Z's instead of S's. Averted in LEGO Racers 2.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: He is the main villain of LEGO Adventurers, but is willing to compete in a friendly racing competition.
  • Gratuitous German: Baron von Barron uses the German conjunction "und" instead of "and" in the first game. Averted in the sequel.
  • Spell My Name With An S: In some languages like Dutch, Baron von Barron's name is spelled "Baron von Baron" in LEGO Racers. In LEGO Racers 2, his surname is spelled Sanister instead of Sinister.
  • Sudden Name Change: In LEGO Racers 2, Baron von Barron was renamed Sam Sanister.
  • The Von Trope Family: Baron von Barron follows this naming scheme, at least in the non-Danish versions of the first game.

Gypsy Moth

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lr_gypsy_moth.png
The queen Zotaxian from LEGO Space, Gypsy Moth is the Hosting Champion of Circuit 6.

  • Ace Pilot: She introduces herself as a veteran pilot to boast about her racing skills.
  • Aliens Speaking English: She is a Zotaxian, and she apparently speaks fluent English.
  • Dub Name Change: Also known as Navigator Sharp (Danish).
  • Humanoid Aliens: Unlike the later Martians, Gypsy Moth has a standard minifigure build like all other Zotaxians.

Workman Fred

A construction worker from LEGO Town, Fred is the first opponent on Sandy Bay.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Fred is relentlessly mocked by the other Sandy Bay racers (including the player character) for using a Digger as his racecar. He doesn't take it well.
  • Named by the Adaptation: LEGO Racers 2 gives a name to this previously-unnamed construction worker minifigure.

Mike the Postman

A postman based upon LEGO Town, Mike is the second opponent on Sandy Bay.

Fireman Gavin

A fireman based upon LEGO Town, Gavin is the third opponent on Sandy Bay.

P.C. Bobby

A police chief from LEGO Town, Bobby is the fourth and final opponent on Sandy Bay.

Riegel

Ruler of the Martians from LEGO Life on Mars, Riegel is the boss of Mars.

  • Aliens Speaking English: Riegel is a Martian who speaks perfect English (or Simlish), although he uses a different dialogue track.
  • Exact Words: He boasts that his vehicle is indestructible. When the player character retorts that no car is indestructible, Riegel reveals that his vehicle is the Humongous Mecha Red Planet Protector, much to the player character's shock.
Riegel: I never said my vehicle was a car... Prepare to race!!
  • No-Sell: Riegel's Red Planet Protector is completely immune to all powerups.
  • Sore Loser: Riegel gets angry upon his defeat and kicks his Red Planet Protector in frustration before storming off. While Sam Sanister and the Berg give you powerups as a reward for beating them, the player character has to resort to stealing Riegel's shield generator while he's not looking.
  • Spell My Name With An S: LEGO Racers 2 uses the "Riegel" spelling of his name, while some other sources call him Rigel.

The Berg

An Ice Monster who dwells in the Arctic, the Berg is the boss of Arctic World.

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: After losing his race, the Berg is depressed, but the player character compliments his racing abilities. This considerably cheers him up, and the Berg thanks the player by rewarding them with giant wheels for greater grip.
  • The Computer Is a Cheating Bastard: The Berg starts running before the race begins, already giving himself the lead and leaving icicles in the player's path.
  • Hulk Speak: The Berg speaks in simple broken English and refers to himself with Third-Person Person, fitting his Hulk-like appearance.
  • An Ice Person: In addition to being literally made of ice, the Berg creates icicles in his wake.
  • No-Sell: The Berg is completely immune to all powerups.

Minor Racers

In LEGO Racers, you compete against Governor Broadside, Rob-N-Hood, Ann Droid, and Pharaoh's Mummy in Circuits 1 and 4; Islander, Royal King, Commander Cold, and Achu in Circuits 2 and 5; Willa the Witch, Blackjack Hawkins, Sam Sinister, and Alpha Dragonis in Circuits 3 and 6; and Admiral, Black Knight, Nova Hunter, and Gail Storm in Circuit 7.

In LEGO Racers 2, you compete against Baron Rosso (PC/console), Scooter (GBA), Frankie Solido, Johnny Thunder, Pippin Read, Mr. Cunningham, Mac, and Cassiopeia on Dino Island, Mars, and Arctic World. On Xalax, you instead race against the Ramas: Lightor, Warrior, Ghost, Freeze, Chill, Duster, and Snake.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: The Black Knight had red hair in the Black Knights subtheme of LEGO Castle, but has black hair in LEGO Racers.note
  • Adaptation Name Change: In the Dutch version of LEGO Racers, Governor Broadside's Dub Name Change is Kapitein Bakboord. This differs from Governor Broadside and Admiral Woodhouse's names in Netherlands LEGO catalogs: Gouverneur Grootzeil and Admiraal Blaaskaak, respectively.
  • Adapted Out: Baron Rosso does not appear in the Game Boy Advance version of LEGO Racers 2, while Scooter does not appear in the PC/console version.
  • Aliens Speaking English: Warrior is a Rama who speaks perfect English (or Simlish), although he uses a different dialogue track.
  • All There in the Script: The only way you would know the names of Baron Rosso and Frankie Solido is by looking in the game files of LEGO Racers 2, since they are never mentioned in the game itself.
  • Composite Character: "Governor Broadside" is actually combining the name of Governor Broadside (the Imperial Soldiers' leader) and the physical appearance of Admiral Woodhouse (the Imperial Guards' leader). This is carried over from Shop At Home catalogs and Disney Adventures comics, which referred to Woodhouse as Broadside.
  • Demoted to Extra: In LEGO Racers 2, Achu and Slyboots only appear as NPCs during Explore mode, and they no longer partake in races.
  • Dub Name Change: When set to various languages, the first LEGO Racers gives certain characters different names instead of literal translations, with these being some of the most notable cases:
    • Governor Broadside: Governador Flinnnote  (Spanish), Kapitein Bakboordnote  (Dutch)
    • Ann Droid: Indradroid (Spanish), Robotina (Dutch)
    • Pharaoh's Mummy: Farao Hoteps Mumienote  (Danish)
    • Islander: Uhu (Danish)
    • Royal King: Koning Leeuwenhartnote  (Dutch)
    • Commander Cold: Capitán Hielonote  (Spanish), Capitano Ghiaccionote  (Italian), Ijskapiteinnote  (Dutch)
    • Achu: Tempelkoningnote  (Dutch)
    • Willa the Witch: Heksen Hylianote  (Danish), Hella de Heksnote  (Dutch)
    • Sam Sinister: Slyboots (Danish), Sluwe Samnote  (Dutch)
    • Blackjack Hawkins: Barbanegranote  (Spanish), Jack il Falconote  (Italian)
    • Alpha Dragonis: Dragon Alfanote  (Italian), Chamon (Danish)
    • Nova Hunter: Aramis la Cazadoranote  (Spanish)
    • Gail Storm: Tormentosanote  (Spanish)
  • The Generic Guy: Ann Droid, Islander, Willa the Witch and Gail Storm all use carbon copies of Black Knight's racing car, for some reason. Everyone else gets their personal custom car in the first LEGO Racers.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: Willa the Witch, Sam Sinister, Alpha Dragonis, Black Knight, and Mr. Cunningham are all villains who partake in this friendly racing championship.
  • Humanoid Aliens: Unlike the later Martians, Alpha Dragonis has a standard minifigure build like all other Zotaxians, although his face is considerably more alien-looking than Gypsy Moth's face.
  • Named by the Adaptation: The generic unnamed Islander is named Uhu in the Danish version.
  • No Name Given:
    • King Richard is only identified as the "Royal King" and Cannonball Cordoba/Don Diego de LEGO/Sergeant Speedy is only called "The Admiral" in LEGO Racers. The Islander and Black Knight are also left unnamed, though to be fair, they had no names in the original lines.
    • Two characters in the second game (Frankie Solido and Baron Rosso) aren't named in the game, as they only show up as racers and never in explore mode as someone you can talk to. The only way you'd be able to know is by hacking into the game files.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Blackjack Hawkins' Spanish name translates to "Blackbeard", but he actually has a grey beard.
  • Original Generation: Although loosely inspired by the LEGO Town theme, Frankie Solido and Baron Rosso are original to LEGO Racers 2 and are not based upon any toyline characters.
  • Pirate: Blackjack Hawkins is a pirate from the LEGO Pirates theme.
  • Previous Player-Character Cameo: Scooter is one of the default playable characters in LEGO Racers, and returns as an opponent racer in the GBA version of LEGO Racers 2.
  • Secret Character: Using a Classic Cheat Code, you can play as Cassiopeia on any Mars race.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Sam Sinister/Slyboots, Baron Rosso, and Frankie Solido wear fashionable suits even while competing in high-octane races.
  • She's a Man in Japan: Nova Hunter's Dub Name Change in Spanish is "Aramis la Cazadora", which translates to "Aramis the Huntress".
  • Spell My Name With An S:
  • Sudden Name Change: In LEGO Racers 2, Sam Sinister and Gail Storm were renamed Slyboots and Pippin Read, respectively. Though, in the Danish version, this is averted by Slyboots, since that was what he was called in the first game.
  • Vocal Dissonance: The first game mixed up the voices of dang near every opponent (the PC version, for example, gets exactly one of the twenty-three opponents). While Rob-N-Hood speaking with the voice of Captain Redbeard isn't much of a deal, hearing Willa the Witch Talk Like a Pirate in the grumpy voice of Blackjack Hawkins is all kinds of wrong.
  • You Don't Look Like You: The Black Knight is a character from the Black Falcons and Black Knights subthemes of LEGO Castle, but he looks almost completely different in LEGO Racers due to using minifigure pieces from Dragon Masters and Fright Knights instead.

Minor NPCs

The Explore mode of LEGO Racers 2 allows you to meet and talk to many other characters who do not compete in the Galactic Racing Championship.
