Juspion and his allies

    Juspion

Megabeast Investigator Juspion

Portrayed by: Hikaru Kurosaki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/juspion_ep1.jpg
An orphan raised by Ejin. After Satan Gorth returns to conquer the universe, Juspion dons the Metal Tec Suit and pilots the robot Daileon to fight Satan Gorth and his army of Megabeasts.
  • Accidental Murder: It's actually not pointed out in-universe, but after Satan Gorth heavily injured Ejin, it was Juspion who accidentally let his foster father fall to his death by hitting Satan Gorth without realizing he was holding the old man.
  • Ball of Light Transformation: Juspion does have this ability, but it is extremely underutilized in comparison to previous Metal Heroes series. It's rarely used at all, and mostly just to evade threats except for the one time he did it as a Cosmic Lightning Dash against a kaiju.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Daileon is a wrestler mech who takes on any monsters and even Satan Gorth with his bare hands. It's only at the very end that the Golden Bird creates him a giant sword to finish off Super Satan Gorth.
  • But Now I Must Go: At the end of the series, he adopts the chosen baby and departs from Earth to Ejin's planet with Anri.
  • Character Development: Starts off a borderline Idiot Hero, but becomes much more mature and serious as the show goes on. This was at the insistence of his actor, who wanted to give a more dramatic performance. Oddly enough, Juspion then goes back towards acting noticeably silly on occasion towards the end of the series.
  • Conveniently an Orphan: Lost his parents while he was very young and was taken in by Ejin.
  • Dub Name Change: Was renamed "Jaspion" in the Brazilian dub.
  • Finishing Move:
    • Daileon's Cosmic Crash involves him empowering himself with lightning before gliding foward and hitting the enemy with both fists, mortally wounding and blasting them over several yards. In at least one episode he instead dramatically uppercuts an airbone enemy and drops their corpse to the ground.
    • Juspion's Cosmic Halley is his take on the series' laser blade finisher that started with Gavan's Gavan Dynamic. He lights up the sword and lands multiple diagonal cuts on the enemy, who typically explodes upon falling dead. At the end, Daileon uses the giant Golden Sword to perform this technique against Super Satan Gorth.
  • Funny Afro: Has an afro in earlier episodes of the series, though he eventually slicks it back.
  • Henshin Hero: Dons his Metal Tech Suit to fight Satan Gorth's army.
  • The Hero: The main hero of the series.
  • His Name Really Is "Barkeep": "Juspion" is his real name, both in and out of the suit.
  • Humongous Mecha: Daileon, which Juspion pilots to fight the Megabeasts.
  • Laser Blade: Juspion's Plasma Blazer Sword, which he lights up whenever he's about to execute an enemy with Cosmic Halley.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is a portmanteau of "justice" and "champion" and he's what you could call a champion of justice.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: Towards the end of the series, Juspion is trapped within a mega beast-infested zone where he's prevented from summoning Daileon. So instead Juspion easily kills a mega beast on his own despite never being able to do throughout the series. And he does it by finally remembering he can use his Ball of Light Transformation as an attack and following it with an aerial and vertical version of Cosmic Halley.
  • The Nose Knows: Owning to his upbringing among beasts, Juspion smells a monster lurking nearby a school despite it being in another dimension. This is another ability that is never seen more than once.
  • Wild Child: Juspion was adopted by the space prophet Ejin and raised amongst mega beasts. One of the theme songs even calls him a "galactic Tarzan", which is relevant to the story as he names the chosen baby Tarzan upon adopting him.

    Anri

Anri

Portrayed by: Kiyomi Tsukada

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/anri_ep1.jpg
An android built by Ejin to assist Juspion.
  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: In episode 2 she gets hacked by an evil satellite and turned against Juspion, though she goes back to normal after Juspion damages the satellite. Noticeably, the only time Anri is ever portrayed as a capable fighter is when she slaps Juspion around in this state.
  • Amusing Injuries: Sometimes Anri gets shot down and at one point is even implied to have been tortured offscreen, but only ever becomes stunned making funny noises as a result before Juspion gets her back to her senses.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: Suddenly shows off rocket boots while saving Juspion and Mika during the penultimate episode, in what's one of the very few times she ever got to do anything cool in the series.
  • Red Is Heroic: Wears a red suit and is the key ally to The Hero.
  • Ridiculously Human Robot: If not for her freezing up on occasion, it would be very easy to forget she's a robot.
  • Running Gag: She often gets into a tussle and ends up freezing up with her limbs outstretched, causing Juspion to have to restart her.
  • Sidekick: Juspion's main helper and ally.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Starts off like a grumpy and strict jerk to Juspion, but he later brainwashes her by installing a new personality circuit in her by force — which is of course Played for Laughs. Anri doesn't change all that much, but is noted to have started liking animals all of a sudden despite the opposite never being shown on-screen outside of her initial resistance to bringing Miya aboard the Daileon.

    Ejin
A galactic prophet and the decipherer of the Galactic Bible. He is the one who raised Juspion to fight against the Megabeasts.
  • Big Good: Ejin is Juspion's mentor and father figure who is frequently targeted by Satangorth for being the one to discover him and research his weaknesses. Even as an old man, he is able to drive the giant away with just his magic staff.
  • The Mentor: Raised Juspion to fight the Megabeasts.
  • Old Master: He's constantly harrassed by Satangorth at his home planet but drives him away every time. When Ejin travels to Earth, he fights Satangorth's forces alongside his pupil Juspion, and even as a hostage he shows defiance to the villains and calmly resists Gilza's mind-reading powers.
  • Parental Substitute: Raised Juspion after he lost his parents.
  • Sacrificial Lion: The only good guy in the series who dies, at the very end, while encouraging Juspion to find the chosen baby and defeat Satan Gorth.

    Miya
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/miya_ep1.jpg
An alien Juspion and Anri find on planet Beegee. After she saves Juspion and Anri from some evil hunters, and Juspion in turn saves her from being killed, she joins Juspion and Anri on board the Daileon.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: She gets Juspion out of deadly peril by flailing around and shooting spikes at Mad Gallant, Gilza and all of their minions. By the time Gallant pushes Miya out of the way, Juspion had already recovered his stolen soul and is ready for action once again.
  • Token Non-Human: Juspion and Anri's visibly alien companion.
  • The Unintelligible: Starts out speaking like "mimimi", though Juspion and Anri can understand her just fine. Every so often, Anri can be seen teaching Miya to speak, and by episode 28 she can cheer Juspion on with complete sentences.

    Boomerang

Boomerang

Portrayed by: Hiroshi Watari

A warrior who fights Madgalant's organization to avenge his brother.
  • Battle Boomerang: He dual wields boomerangs to fight.
  • But Now I Must Go: After Juspion saves Boomerang from slavery at Mad Gallant's hand, he leaves Japan to improve his combat abilities and doesn't return until episodes 31 and 32... where he fails to exact revenge upon Mad Gallant and departs for good to work with the International U.S. Marshalls.
  • Dub Name Change: Called "Boomerman" in the Brazilian dub.
  • Failure Hero: A lot is said of Boomerang being an effective fighter but he has little to show for it on-screen. Juspion saves Boomerang from being brainwashed and later from being enslaved to Mad Gallant, so the guy leaves the country to become stronger. When he returns, all he does he get his ass kicked and toss his boomerangs at random objects. After failing to damage a helper robot with his Cross Cutter attack, Boomerang chases after Mad Gallant but is defeated and pushed off a cliff. Juspion saves him and watches him leave Japan again, while Anri gives a particularly sad-sounding goodbye to cap such an underwhelming performance off.
  • Put on a Bus: He's introduced as a recurring sidekick for Juspion, only to get written out because his actor had to leave for health reasons. When he does come back, it's just to have some measure of closure for his character arc before getting removed for good.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: Hiroshi Watari broke his leg in a traffic accident after the end of the Space Sheriff trilogy and played Boomerang in this series with pins from surgery still in the fracture. Boomerang was written out after episode 12 because Hiroshi had another surgery to remove the pins. The character briefly returned in episodes 31 and 32 after Hiroshi's full recovery, but just to have his part on the story closed off for good — and on a loss to Mad Gallant at that.
  • You Killed My Father: His brother was a interpol agent who attempted to infiltrate Mad Gallant's gang but was discovered and executed. Unfortunately, Boomerang fails to defeat Gallant on his own and leaves the task to Juspion as he completely disappears from the series.
  • The Worf Barrage: He learns to toss both boomerangs at once as a "Cross Cutter" attack and first unveils this by hitting a random tree and getting dope slapped by his assailants. Really. This attack proves worthwhile to help Juspion kill the gangsters in episode 31, but fails to faze either the robots or Mad Gallant in the next episode.

Megabeast Empire

    In General
  • The Empire: Satan Gorth's vast, expansionist domain.
  • Mooks: Uniquely, the Empire's human-sized ground troops are a variety of aliens all with distinct heads and features, as opposed to the identical Faceless Goons you normally see as grunts in Toku shows.
  • Religion of Evil: They appear to have one centered around Satan Gorth and worship of him.

    Satan Gorth

Satan Gorth

Voiced by: Shōzō Iizuka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/satan_goss_ep12.jpg
A colossal being from the Dark Galaxy who seeks to conquer the universe by creating an army of corrupted Megabeasts.
  • Big Bad: The ruler of the Megabeast Empire, the one corrupting the Megabeasts and the source of all the problems in the series.
  • BFS: Wields a sword that's almost as long as he is tall.
  • The Corrupter: Drives the Megabeasts to rampage with a beam he fires from his eyes.
  • Dark Is Evil: Wears a suit of dark armor and exudes dark energy.
  • Dramatic Unmask: On episode 35, he takes the helmet off at his recovery chamber and gives viewers a glimpse of his true monstrous form.
  • Eldritch Abomination: Beyond his massive size, the dark aura he exudes, his mysterious way of traveling between planets and very inhuman nature indicate there's much more to Satan Gorth than what we can comprehend.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: As bad as he is, he does truly care for his son Mad Gallant and seeks to pass his empire onto him.
  • Evil Overlord: Is titanic in size, clad in dark armor, rules over a vast interstellar empire and has "Satan" in his name.
  • Galactic Conqueror: Satan Gorth's campaign stretches across numerous worlds, and he ultimately plans to conquer the entire universe.
  • Green Thumb: As Super Satan Gorth, he attacks Juspion with vines and transforms urban areas into ancient jungles filled with mega beasts. Naturally, all of it gets magically reversed as soon as he dies.
  • Large and in Charge: He's the size of a Kaiju and the undisputed ruler of the Megabeast Empire.
  • One-Winged Angel: In the finale he reveals his true form a Cthulhu-esque kaiju who can breathe fire, fight with tentacles and vines, and transform urban areas into prehistoric jungles.
  • Orcus on His Throne: Satan avoids direct combat for most of the series until he completes and unleashes his true form, so he will typically pop in from out of nowhere, enrage a giant monster and then just leave while Juspion fights it. In episode 43, he does openly destroy a city out of frustration and even beats Daileon but is too unstable to finish him and Juspion off.
  • Painful Transformation: "Molting" from his armor to become Super Satan Gorth turns out to be a painful process, so Mad Gallant has a girl kidnapped to serve as a blood sacrifice to ease the pain. When the ritual fails, Satan Gorth's transformation is initially incomplete and he's unable to focus and kill Juspion after dragging him to a hellish dimension.
  • Power Incontinence: On his death throes, Satan Gorth releases a burst of lightning that just so happens to take down all of his remaining minions.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Has red eyes, which light up whenever he fires his enragement beam at a Megabeasts.
  • Satanic Archetype: Is a force of pure evil who corrupts other beings into acting malicious.
  • Spell My Name With An S: While "Satan Gorth" seems to be the official romanization, his name has alternatively been spelled as "Satan Goss", "Sathan Goss", "Satangorth", "Satangos" and, much more humorously, "Satan Goose".
  • Take Over the World: His objective on Earth is to devolve human civilization back to prehistoric ages and rule over it.
  • The Voiceless: For most of the series he doesn't speak a word, at most making grunts that seem to only be intelligible to Mad Gallant. Around two thirds of the way through, however, he starts speaking.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: The Golden Bird holds the secret to killing him for good. Early on, Satan Gorth is terrified of this and Juspion merely shouting the Golden Bird's name completely incapacitates him. At the very end, the chosen baby's sudden appearance leaves him frozen in place and allows Daileon to cut him down like it's nothing.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: When Juspion faces him in episode 12, Satan Gorth has the clear advantage thanks to his sword and knocks Daileon down but fails to destroy it because Juspion exploits his fears of the golden bird. Satan Gorth then just warps away after tanking a Cosmic Crash.

    Mad Gallant

Mad Gallant

Portrayed by: Jyunichi Haruta

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mad_gallant_ep15.jpg
Click here to see his human form.
Satan Gorth's son and right-hand man, as well as Juspion's rival throughout the series. He dons a jet black Metal Tec Suit similar to Juspion's whenever he enters the field.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Mad Gallant has a very Undignified Death. After so much training and effort he ends up mortally wounded by jumping on Juspion's raised sword and stumbles around in pain until he gets executed by the Cosmic Halley once again. Still clinging to life and enraged at being beaten by a puny human, he transforms into a second Satan Gorth just to immediately die from his injuries, and then his father mourns him before beating the crap out of Daileon in a rage.
  • An Arm and a Leg: On their first Duel to the Death, Juspion slashes Mad Gallant's sword arm before executing him with the Cosmic Halley. The severed arm is left still holding on to the sword when it lands on the ground.
  • Back from the Dead: Falls to Juspion in episode 29, but is brought back soon after by Gilza.
  • Dark Is Evil: Wears black armor, just like his father.
  • The Dragon: To his father, acting as his second-in-command and chief enforcer.
  • Dragon Ascendant: Is being groomed by Satan Gorth to become this, by one day inheriting his empire.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Greatly respects his father and seeks to help him achieve his dream of a galaxy dominated by Megabeasts.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Juspion, serving as his most prominent enemy and wearing armor that's similar to his, but black.
  • The Heavy: While he doesn't appear until episode 4, he's Juspion's main enemy on the ground and the mover of most of the episode plots, all while his father lurks in the shadows.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: In episode 29 he kidnaps Juspion's ally Sachi and attempts to marry her to make her one of his wives.
  • Inertial Impalement: How he's defeated for the second and final time. He leaps over Juspion to stab him, but misses and lands on Juspion's raised sword instead.
  • Mook Lieutenant: Leads the assortment of alien Mooks that serve the Megabeast Empire.
  • No Body Left Behind: When Mad Gallant is killed for the first time, he's torn to pieces and Gilza puts him back together. When he's killed for the second time, he fades into a burst of lightning.
  • One-Winged Angel: He manages to transform into a second Satan Gorth... when Juspion has mortally wounded him, so in a subversion of this trope the giant just collapses and perishes for good.
  • Orcus on His Throne: In the first few episodes, Mad Gallant has to work on his evil plans by himself and actually duels Juspion several times because he has no elite mooks to rely on. Once he does get powerful warriors and assassins under his employ, then he just sits back while they fight Juspion for him.
  • Overlord Jr.: The son of Satan Gorth, who is grooming him to one day succeed him as Evil Overlord of the Megabeast Empire.
  • Sinister Shades: Wears a pair of black shades in his human form, but switches to a helmet after Gilza revives him.

    Evil Four Deva Kings

Evil Four Deva Kings

Portrayed by: Toshimichi Takahashi (Ikki), Misa Nirei (Brima), Daikaku Sekine (Zampa), Kei Anan (Gyol)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/evil_four_deva_kings_ep13.jpg
From left to right: Brima, Ikki, Zampa and Gyol
A quartet of space outlaws hired on by Mad Gallant.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: Zampa actually gets Juspion on the ropes thanks to his sturdy android body, but Juspion critically damages him with a shot to the eyes.
  • Bodyguard Babes: Gyol and Brima are regularly seen side-by-side with Mad Gallant and fight Juspion more often than her does.
  • The Brute: Ikki, a musclebound warrior who serves as the heavy hitter of the group.
  • Dwindling Party: Ikki gets killed a few episodes after his debut and Zampa dies not long after. Brima and Gyol last for most the series after that, until they combine into a monster to battle Juspion and are finally killed.
  • Elite Four: A team of four skilled and powerful space mercenaries.
  • Evil Genius: Brima, a space prophet with a number of mystical abilities at her command.
  • Revenge by Proxy: Galactic authorities put an end to Zampa's reign of terror when he shot and injured Juspion's father Gary, who was an important environmentalist. As such, he is presumed to be responsible for killing Juspion's parents and also holds him in comtempt after learning their connection.
  • Robotic Reveal: Initially appearing to be a Human Alien just like the others, it turns out in episode 18 that Zampa is a robot.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: They typically flee when Juspion has them cornered. Ikki is only killed when he challenges Juspion to a straightfoward duel to the death and Zampa later suffers the same fate due to his grudge towards Juspion's family.
  • You Killed My Father: It is implied that Zampa shot down Gary's and Anna's spaceship when they were travelling to Earth.

    Gilza

Gilza

Portrayed by: Atsuko Takahata

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gilza_ep35.jpg
A galactic witch summoned by Satan Gorth to assist the Empire in fighting Juspion.
  • Evil Genius: An intelligent spellcaster in the service of the Megabeast Empire.
  • Evil Sorceress: Aids Satan Gorth with her knowledge of the dark arts and variety of mystical abilities.
  • Light Is Not Good: Wears shiny silver armor but is wicked to the core.
  • Losing Your Head: The first time Juspion defeats Gilza, he decapitates her and destroys her body... but the body just reappears unharmed and holding her head, as she laughs like it doesn't bother her.
  • Mind Probe: She's capable of using her mystical powers to peer into someone's mind and read their thoughts, though some such as Ejin are able to resist her.
  • Not Quite Dead: Juspion decapitates her and seemingly destroys her body, but it doesn't take. Then on episode 36 he just stabs her with both her own knife and the Laser Sword before performing the Cosmic Halley and it kills her for good.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Juspion has an easy time killing her in their second fight because she's distracted by visions of the baby chosen by the Golden Bird.

    Gilmarza

Gilmarza

Portrayed by: Yukie Kagawa

The sister of Gilza and a powerful sorceress as well.
  • Avenging the Villain: She's out to avenge Gilza's death.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Her: She outlasts every other antagonist in the series, but just to randomly die to the burst of lightning that Satan Gorth releases as he explodes.
  • Evil Genius: More or less fills her sister's role as this.
  • Light Is Not Good: Like her sister she has a bright and shiny appearance in spite of her evil ways.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Has reduced several planets to ruin through manipulation and trickery of their populations.
  • Red Baron: Is known as the "Spectre Queen of the Dark Galaxy".

    Five Space Ninjas
A team of five skilled ninjas created by Gilmarza with her magic.
  • Ball of Light Transformation: They transform into spheres of light and charge towards Juspion, who in spite of having this ability himself had never used it as an attack for the entire series.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The last two transform into a tank-man and a blob of magma ammunition that look like an interesting challenge, but Juspion slays both of them in the blink of an eye.
  • Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: Space Ninjas that are actually monsters.
  • One-Winged Angel: Each ninja reveals a monster or robot form when they're cut down by Juspion.
    • One is a centipede monster that can cast a spiritual projection.
    • The second is a mechanical spiked ball that fires lightning and that can drain the energy of Juspion's suit by stabbing it.
    • The third is a human wielding a piece of cloth and then a naginata.
    • The fourth bursts into a tank-man and the final one becomes a floating blob of magma to give him ammunition.
  • Praetorian Guard: Gilmarza's elite soldiers and servants.

    Megabeasts
Colossal creatures found on numerous planets across the universe. It is the goal of Satan Gorth to corrupt them into serving in his army so he can use them to conquer the universe.
  • Forced into Evil: Most aren't evil of their own free will, and only rampage because they were hit with Satan Gorth's enragement beam.
  • Kaiju: Giant monsters who often wind up rampaging through cities thanks to Satan Gorth's corruption.
  • Monster of the Week: Most episodes see Juspion having to contend with one.
