    Arata Hoshino

Arata Hoshino

The main protagonist of the drama. A slacker of a college student, Arata has no interest in looking ahead to his future. Given a Future Diary by his friend Rui Moriguchi, Arata finds himself in a future he does not want, accompanied by his own stalker Yuno Furusaki.

  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Quite smart, self-sacrificing and chivalrous, but too lazy to claim his future.
  • The Chosen One: Chosen by Deus to complete Olympia.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility: Shortly after Arata gets his Future Diary, he spends a night gambling and partying with friends following his diary's predictions.
  • Expy: Of Yukiteru, although there's little to compare between the two other than being stalked by Yuno. Arata is very brave, independent, and dislikes using Yuno as a weapon.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Gave up the chance to return to the real world in order to please Deus, but is able to send Yuno and the other diary owners home. Implied he may awaken from his coma some day.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: Despite his objectivity, he is a very kind and caring person, refusing to kill anyone (unless having no other choice).
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Arata forgot Yuno before the survival game after her apparent death in a fire. He remembers his time with her by the series' end.
  • Necessarily Evil: He is forced to break Megumi's diary to save Yuno.
  • Ordinary College Student: Just a normal guy in college who has little ambitions in life til he gains his Future Diary.
  • Selfless Wish: His only reason to win the game would be to revive everyone who died.
  • The Slacker: Not the most enthusiastic guy about seeking a future, but this changes as the survival game goes on.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: Unless he has no other option. He is forced to break Megumi's diary to save Yuno, and then Haruna's, although the latter asks him to.

    Yuno Furusaki

Yuno Furusaki

Arata's personal stalker and love interest. Yuno is devoted to Arata and has Yandere qualities to her, but maintains a more subtle sense of madness to her. She refers to Arata as "A-kun", her diary able predicting everything Arata does or even feels. Like the original Yuno, she is implied to have had a troubled childhood and may have one or two secrets hidden in her house.

  • Abusive Parents: Her mother is implied to have locked her in a closet countless times. Both of her parents are dead by the time the series starts.
  • Action Girlfriend:
  • Always Save The Guy: Subverted, Arata has saved Yuno from death several times.
  • Ax-Crazy: Not as much as her manga counterpart, but it is still there. However, it turns out she is completely sane, just desperate to protect Arata, after failing to care for him during the fateful fire.
  • Broken Bird: Implied to have been abused by her parents, and when they died, she was left broken until meeting Arata.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Seems to have hostility towards Haruna, likely because she knows she is a diary holder.
  • Expy: Of Yuno, minus the pink hair and miraculously sane.
  • Girl with Psycho Weapon: Only used a knife on occasion, but tried to use a broken jar to kill Megumi.
  • Go Through Me: To protect Arata.
  • Good All Along: Despite the belief she was behind the whole game and secretly wanted to win it, it turns out Yuno was sent into Olympia to protect Arata from Deus.
  • Lack of Empathy: Subverted, as she actually sympathises with both Yousuke and Kinjiro.
  • Room Full of Crazy: Two rooms in her house. The closet where she was trapped by her mother, and the basement where someone is trapped behind a metal door. Revealed to be a secondary Yuno who seems more crazier than the first. It then turns out the trapped Yuno is merely an NPC of the virtual survival game and stabbed Arata as payback. The digital Yuno is freed in the second round of the game, armed with a diary, and tries to kill Arata and the real Yuno. In the end, Arata ends up approaching her in Olympia post-game, implied to pursue a relationship with her, real or not.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Averted. Yuno was Arata's actual girlfriend before the survival game, but he forgot about her in Olympia.
  • Tragic Keepsake: A small ball Arata won for her when they were dating.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Arata.
  • Yandere: To a lesser extent than her manga counterpart. Loses this completely by the end of the show.
