Main Characters

    Dracula

Dracula / Alexander Grayson / Vlad Tepes

  • Adaptational Attractiveness: In the source material, he's a hideous monster (until he drinks blood) but here he's played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers, face of Hugo Boss.
  • The Charmer: Is seductive to women and in public with his Grayson persona, he's kind of a cheeky industrialist type, a Victorian era vampire Richard Branson.
  • Fake American: In-universe. Dracula is Wallachian. He pretends to be American so others consider him a newcomer to the country.
  • Pet the Dog: Dracula of course has a soft spot for Mina, but he also seems to care about Renfield a good deal - when they first met he rescued Renfield from being beaten up and possibly killed, for no ulterior motive, and when Renfield is captured Dracula comes to his rescue while carrying out a Roaring Rampage of Revenge on the people who tortured him.
  • Politically Correct Villain: Dracula is a very progressive person for the 1890s, having no problem with gay people (albeit he's not above using this for blackmail, with it implied he may be bisexual as well himself), accepts Renfield into his employ (here an African-American attorney who was unable to get work as a result of racism in the US) while specifically Renfield's race doesn't matter to him and he wants to provide cheaper energy via wireless electricity (though it's partly to crush his foes, who invest in oil), while he's still of course a brutal vampire. He also views women as his equals.
  • Try to Fit That on a Business Card:
"And you are Vlad the Third, prince of Wallachia, second son of the House of Basarab, also known as Vlad Tepes, Vlad the Impaler—Dracula."
  • Vampires Are Sex Gods: He wastes little time seducing Lady Jayne, and from her enthused reactions when they have sex, he's very good.
  • Villain Protagonist: While the Order of the Dragon is plenty evil, Dracula himself is no saint.
  • Wicked Cultured: Enjoys the finer things in life, and in this adaptation, displays a kind of P.T. Barnum/Edison vibe, selling his wireless electricity all over London.

    Mina

Mina Murray

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/murray_mina_1676.jpg
Played By: Jessica De Gouw

A medical student and the reincarnation of Dracula's long-dead wife.

  • Alliterative Name: Mina Murray
  • Brainy Brunette: She's a woman with dark brown hair who's a medical student, while also doing some scientific research on her own. As this is the 1890s, she's more notable by having intellectual pursuite than would be the case otherwise.
  • Burn the Witch!: In her previous incarnation, this is how she died.
  • Composite Character: She has some of John Seward's traits from the books, since both studied medicine under van Helsing.
  • Nice Girl: She's a sweet young woman who's usually kind to everybody else.

    Van Helsing

Prof. Abraham Van Helsing

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/van_helsing_abraham_9299.jpg

Mina's lecturer at university and secret ally of Dracula.

  • Enemy Mine: He is the one to release Dracula from his crypt; this is due to their shared enmity toward the Order of the Dragon.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: He has no qualms about murdering innocent people to get his revenge against the Order.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He kidnaps Browning's children cuts off the finger of the son and sends it to them, then feeds them both Dracula's blood, turning them into vampires and setting them on Browning as he burns all of them in a building.

    Lady Jayne

Lady Jayne Wetherby

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wetherby_jane_3419.jpg
Played By: Victoria Smurfit

A fashionable woman who is immediately enticed by the King of Vampires. She's also a secret member of the Order of the Dragon.

  • Ancient Conspiracy: She's a high-ranking member of the Order of the Dragon, which has been manipulating Western civilization for centuries.
  • Badass Longcoat: She often has a long leather coat on, usually while fighting, which whirls around her while she's beating opponents gracefully.
  • Canon Foreigner: She never appears in any original material. However, she's possibly the first of Dracula's "brides", given some of her traits.
  • Dark Action Girl: She singlehandedly kills two vampires in the London Underground and decapitates a third later on. She's a high-ranking member of the Order of the Dragon, a secret society that has been covertly manipulating Western civilization for centuries.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: She scoffs at the idea that Grayson might be a vampire, only for Lord Browning to accuse her of this trope, given that he's a very handsome man whom she finds attractive (and also has sex with, though he doesn't know they're lovers at the time).
  • The Dragon: She is the chief lieutenant to Lord Browning, leader of the antagonistic Order of the Dragon.
  • Eternal Sexual Freedom: Despite living in the Victorian Era, she seduces Grayson without any particular regard for social norms, and doesn't seem to suffer any consequences for it either.
  • Lady of War: She's an elegant, stylish aristocratic woman who is also a skilled fighter. While fighting she moves gracefully and easily defeats most opponents.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: Lady Jayne is a lipstick bisexual, a Lady of War favoring leather, though still in a feminine style. Jayne encourages Lucy to act on her feelings for Mina, revealing she'd had multiple female lovers before ever seeing any men.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She's often in revealing clothes, with a preference for leather, and she frequently wears a corset showing deep cleavage. More than once she also has passionate sex with Dracula. No other female character ever shows this much skin and has so many sex scenes.
  • Of Corsets Sexy: She often has a corset on which shows off her cleavage.
  • Uncertain Doom: She's stabbed, but Dracula feeds on her not long after. There's a good chance she was turned.
  • Vampire Hunter: She's skilled at killing vampires, prowling London's streets to find and hunt them down while not in her usual business.

    Jonathan

Jonathan Harker

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/harker_jonathan_9065.jpg
Played By: Oliver Jackson-Cohen

A gauche journalist who's desperate to climb the ranks of aristocracy.

  • Adaptational Job Change: From a solicitor in the novel to a journalist.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: The primary reason he eventually turns on Dracula and joins the Order of the Dragon is the other man's interest in Mina.
  • Social Climber: His desire for greater social status and a better paycheck leads him to work for Alexander Grayson, ferreting out information and writing stories that Grayson wants written.

    Renfield

R.M. Renfield

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/renfield_r_m__8339.jpg
Played By: Nonso Anozie

Dracula's loyal confidant and keeper of secrets.

  • Adaptational Badass: While in the book, Renfield was a sycophantic slave and utterly insane bug-eater, here he's a cool and collected man.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Reinfield undergoes this throughout "The Devil's Waltz", at the hands of Davenport's agents, who are trying to find out who Grayson loves most, so that Davenport can have revenge for Grayson's role in his son's death. To his credit, Reinfield doesn't talk, and holds up until Dracula rescues him.
  • Honest Advisor: To Dracula. Since the two started working together, Renfield made it clear that he would only give Dracula his loyalty if Dracula was honest with him in turn, and Dracula is often shown confiding in Renfield about everything from business matters to honestly answering Renfield's questions about why he wouldn't turn Mina into a vampire.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: For Dracula. He arranges everything that Dracula can't, such as daylight business.
  • Race Lift: His race isn't mentioned in the book, but Renfield has always been depicted as a white fellow. In this adaptation he's played by Nonso Anozie.
  • The Renfield: To put it elegantly, DUUUUUH. That said, this version is far more competent and mentally stable than the traditional Renfield, who was often portrayed as an expendable sycophant at best, with Renfield serving as Dracula's confidant.
  • Servile Snarker: Often makes truly deadpan sarcastic remarks to his employer; also, he is the only one allowed to affect mannerisms that Dracula would find disrespectful from anyone else.

    Lucy

Lucy Westenra

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/westenra_lucy_3876.jpg
Played By: Katie McGrath

A rich society girl who harbors secret romantic feelings for Mina, her best friend.

  • Adaptational Sexuality: Lucy is straight in the novel (and the vast majority of previous adaptations) but a lesbian in this series.
  • Adaptational Villainy: In the book, she was one of the sweetest characters while human. Here, she's manipulative and lustful, working with Dracula and against Harker.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: She's in love with Mina, engaged to Jonathan.
  • Anguished Declaration of Love: Lucy tearfully confesses that she loves Mina romantically, not just as a friend. Mina doesn't reciprocate, gets uncomfortable and tells her to leave.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She's prone to sarcastic remarks and makes no secret of how boring she considers Jonathan to be (this may partly be a result of her desiring Mina, Jonathan's intended, for herself).
  • Incompatible Orientation: Lucy loves Mina romantically, but the latter is straight and doesn't return her feelings that way.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: Lucy is a feminine lesbian, wearing copious amounts of ultra-feminine dresses, mostly in varying shades of pink and purple, while she secretly loves Mina.
  • Matricide: Maybe. In the final episode, her first act as a vampire is to bite her mother. If she changed her into a vampire or not is unknown due to the series cancellation.

Recurring Characters

    Lord Browning

Lord Browning

Played By: Ben Miles

  • Affably Evil: He always presents himself as a polite, respectable, gentleman when speaking to others and is always very cordial with those that he works with. However, he will not tolerate failure from his underlings who do not bring him results and he will show just how ruthless he can be when provoked.
  • Ancient Conspiracy: A high-ranking member of the Order of the Dragon.
  • Bad Boss: He has no qualms with threatening those that serve him with severe punishment or killing those under him without the slightest hesitation if they should fail him.
  • Big Bad: He's seemingly the current leader of the Order of the Dragon in London.
  • Knight Templar:Believes what he and the Order of the Dragon are doing is in the best interest of England and the world; justifying their cruel and malicious actions, self-righteous, and cold-blooded murder of innocents and their war profiteering in the name of God.
