"Why words slink n' slide off a tongue, when we need them most? If my tongue'd been more bold, could I have stopped all that diresomes about to happen?"
Played By: Tom Hanks
Dubbed By: Jean-Philippe Puymartin (European French)

"Lonesome night. Babbits bawlin', wind bitin' the bone. Wind like this full of voices. Ancestry howlin' at you, yibberin' stories. All voices tied up into one. One voice different, one voice whisperin' out there, spyin' from the dark. That fangy devil Ol' Georgie hisself. Now you hear up close and I'll yarn you about the first time we met, eye to eye."

A Valleysman who helps Meronym find something that's hidden on the island where he and his tribe live.

  • Age Lift: He's a teen in the book, but is aged up to the middle-aged Tom Hanks in the film.
  • The Atoner: For letting his brother-in-law and nephew die without trying to save them.
  • Badass Native: From the indigenous populations that try to survive in Hawaii after the Fall, that is.
  • Birthmark of Destiny: In the film only—in the book, it is Meronym who has the birthmark, and is the only one of the stories' protagonists who does not appear to be the reincarnation of the previous one. Especially meaningful as towards the end of his life he insists to his children that Meronym is Sonmi reborn, which she very well could be.
  • Cool Old Guy: When it cuts to him telling his story.
  • Dirty Coward: During the first Kona ambush, following Old Georgie's "true-true" advices.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Old Georgie accuses him of this when he's helping out Meronym.
Old Georgie: You ain't let go of that rope cuz you were lustlin' for that darky sweet meat!... You judissin' your kin for a piece of ass!
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: He ends up escaping the island with Meronym, goes to an offworld colony and winds up Happily Married with her.
  • Exact Words: The Abbess tells him never to slit the throat of a sleeping enemy. So when he finds a Kona asleep in his house, he slits his throat as soon as he wakes.
  • Eye Patch Of Power: He gets one of these near the end of his story.
  • Facial Markings: Like most people in his tribe.
  • First-Name Basis: Save for Abbess referring him by his full name when he freaks out over a dream, his last name is almost never used.
  • Happily Married: To Meronym, at the end.
  • Hearing Voices: Courtesy of Old Georgie.
  • Papa Wolf: Fiercely protective of his niece, as she's a reminder that he could have saved her brother and father but didn't.
  • The Patriarch: He's a respected elder and his niece and sister clearly defer to him. Later, he and Meronym have several grandchildren.
  • Scars Are Forever: The wound across his eye from the second fight with the Kona is still there in his old age.
  • The Storyteller: He tells his story and several others to a group of children gathered around a fire.
  • Survivor Guilt: His sister and the rest of the tribe are killed, leaving him and his niece alive. He's more than a little unhappy about this.
  • Took a Level in Badass: From Dirty Coward who always tried to avoid the Kona to capable badass when he is forced to fight them.
  • Wasteland Elder: He's an elder of a post-apocalyptic tribe of people living on the Hawaiian islands.

    Meronym

Meronym

"If you fall I catch you."
Played By: Halle Berry

"All true. But they got somethin' else. A hunger in their hearts, a hunger that's stronger than all their Smart."

An ethnologist from the most advanced human civilization left after the Fall.

  • Action Girl: She can more than hold her own in a fight.
  • Birthmark of Destiny: In the book, and she's the only one of the comet-marked that isn't the protagonist of her story. In the film, the birthmark is given to Zachry.
  • Cool Old Lady: In the epilogue.
  • Deuteragonist" Of Sloosha's Crossin'. Zachry is the viewpoint character, but the story revolves around Meronym's quest. In the book, she is implied to be the reincarnation of the other protagonists instead of Zachry.
  • Ethereal White Dress: Wears white to emphasize her mysterious, otherworldly nature. Her knowledge of history and technology gives her a connection to the past that seems almost magical to Zachry's less advanced culture. And of course, she's implied to be a reincarnation of all the past protagonists of the book.
  • Happily Married: To Zachry at the end of the film.
  • Martial Pacifist: She believes in peaceful resolutions, but will resort to violence if necessary.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name means "a part of something referred to a whole".
  • Mighty Whitey: Inverted, she's a foreign black woman who uplifts a "savage" tribe of white natives.
  • Perfect Pacifist People: The Prescients are this.
  • Promoted to Love Interest: With Zachry at the end.
  • Sufficiently Advanced Alien: A variant. She and her people are human, but are so far advanced in terms of technology compared to Zachry's that they may as well be alien. She has all the technology required to move the plot forward.

    Old Georgie

Old Georgie

"Ain't no blade can protect you from the True-True!"
Played By: Hugo Weaving

If Sonmi is God to the Valleymen, Old Georgie is the devil. He is said to exist atop Mauna Kea, which is, in turn, a feared spot for the Valleymen. He appears regularly as a vision to Zachry. He is dressed in old, ruined black clothes and top hat, reminiscent of the dress worn by Adam in the opening scene of The Pacific Journal of Adam Ewing. Zachry believed that Old Georgie was the one who "tripped the Fall" before being corrected by Meronym.

  • Bad Angel: To Zachry.
  • The Corrupter: He continuously encourages Zachry to do the wrong thing, as it's the easy way out.
  • Dark Is Evil: He's dressed head to toe in black, and is pretty much the devil.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Described as having a deep Voice of the Legion.
  • Evil Is Hammy: Big time.
  • Femme Fatalons: A male version.
  • God in Human Form: Possibly.
  • Hearing Voices: How Zachry describes him.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: He may very well just be a hallucination, a product of Zachry's psyche and possibly chronic usage of mind-altering herbs. However, the fact he throws Dr. Goose's motto back at Zachry, even saying it's something he's often said before, raises the possibility he's the real deal.
  • Obviously Evil: Can't get any more obvious than green skin, black outfit, and a hideous face.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: His battered suit is a subversion, and marks him out as a specifically post-apocalyptic version of the Devil.
  • Spirit Advisor: Of the Evil sort, naturally. He eventually starts to disappear when Zachry almost stabs Meronym, and when the Kona clan are chasing after Zachry, he appears to mess with him. Zachry ignores him and he is never seen again.
  • Voice of the Legion: Zachry describes his voice as like this.
  • Wall Walk: While Meronym and Zachary are climbing a wall, he approaches Zachry with ease despite being on the vertical.

    Abbess

Abbess

"We are bound together from womb to tomb."
Played By: Susan Sarandon

"Bridge'a'broken, hide below, Hands'a'bleedin', can't let go, enemy sleepin', don't slit that throat."

A well-regarded spiritual leader within Valleysmen.

  • Eye Colour Change: During her "auguring" of Zachry's fate, cycling from her natural light brown to blue, then green, then finally an Asiatic nut-brown — presumably, Sonmi's.
  • Facial Markings: Has them.
  • High Priest: She seems to function as the religious leader of her tribe, who worship Sonmi like a god.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: We never know what happened to her after the cannibals attacked. It would be safe to assume that she died along with the rest of the villagers.

    Rose

Played By: Zhou Xun

Zachry's sister, who loses her husband during a raid by the Kona tribe.

    Kona Chief

Kona Chief

Played By: Hugh Grant

The Chief of the savage, cannibalistic Kona tribe.

  • Skull for a Head: His facepaint is meant to evoke this.
  • Slashed Throat: His favourite method of execution. And later, Zachry slashes his throat as he wakes up.
