Protagonist

    Fukami Suguha

Fukami Suguha

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5688_1360397945.jpg
The protagonist of the story, a former kendoka who starts as a shut-in highschooler playing eroge all day with a knack for Japanese history. After getting forced by his sister Kojiri to go visit the Sengaku-ji temple, he's suddenly transported in the past in 1701, as the Ako incident is about to begin.

Awakening in a family working for Kuranosuke, he adapts quickly to his new life as he realizes he cannot go back to his era, at least for the time being. Following the death of the daimyo Asano Takumi-no-Kami, he decides to join the Ako ronin after their disbanding, with the intention of changing history and prevent their deaths...
  • Age-Gap Romance: His first Love Interest Kuranosuke is a mother who already has a grown child who's almost the same age as him.
  • Amazon Chaser: Develops feelings for Kuranosuke and Yasubee, two of the strongest Ako Ronin.
  • Anti-Hero: He doesn't have noble goals per se, instead helping the ronin carrying out their plan of assassination and later deserting the Ako ronin altogether in Chikara's route.
  • Big Good: On the final route, he essentially controls every action of the ronin and coordinate them to victory, with some help from his ally Ichigaku.
  • Character Development: The many experiences he underwent while being trapped in the Genroku Era forced him to be a better and more proactive person, having grown attached to his newfound family and his many friends.
  • Chick Magnet: By the end of the story, he had a romance with no more than four different ladies across the routes. Other characters also showed interest in him such as his adopted sister Sayo, Yasubee's aide Shinroku, Kira's retainer Ichigaku as Kosa Kazumi, the vagrant Shinpachi, and Kazuemon.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Starting from Chikara's route, he begins to use sneaky and unortodox tactics to fight opponents stronger than him.
  • Genre Savvy: Thanks to his knowledge of Japanese history and the many series of The 47 Ronin, he can devise plans to help the Ronin in their vengeance.
  • Guile Hero: To protect his fellow ronin from danger, he's willing to manipulate and deceive other people to gain victory.
  • Heroic BSoD: During the two thirds of Chikara's route, he chooses to distant himself from the ronin, fearing that his actions will alter history and cause them to suffer like him. The death of Kayano at the hands of Shinpachi hits him hard.
  • Loser Protagonist: At the very beginning of the game, he's shown to be very lazy and unwilling to go out with his few friends, but he's far from asocial.
  • The Movie Buff: Downplayed. He's not a cinephile, but he watched a lot of Jidaigeki and it gave him sizeable knowledge about the 47 Ronin.
  • My Greatest Failure: The reason he stopped kendo altogether and refuses to kills his enemies is because he accidentally sent one of his fellow kendoka in the hospital out of rage, putting her in a deep coma.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: His policy to never kill anyone bites him back when Saruhashi kills him at the end of Kuranosuke's route, and his hesitation to kill Kaguya at the end of the game allows her to transform into her final form, forcing him to kill her.
  • Now, Let Me Carry You: Twice.
    • Kuranosuke protected him for the majority of her route, being her caretaker, but one fateful has him taking care of her after picking her up in a host bar, completely drunk and unable to walk normally.
    • Yasubee sheltered him near her apartment as her personal teacher for swordsmanship and guide in Edo, but after she gets injured by Kazuemon, he instead helps her for menial tasks when her arm was healing.
  • Out with a Bang: He can potentially die in Chikara's route if he chooses to sleep with Shinpachi, in which he accidentally reveals his affiliation to the Ako Ronin, prompting her to murder him after the act.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Refusing to get involved with the ronin anymore, he decides to flee Yamashina in Chikara's route to deal with his guilt of failling to change history.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Has black hair along with a slightly darker skin, and he's fairly good looking.
  • Thou Shall Not Kill: He absolutely refuses to kill his enemies, no matter the circumstances.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Downplayed. At the end of the story, he's arguably one of the strongest swordsman amongst all ronin, thanks to the years of experience he had across the loops, learning techniques from Kuranosuke and Yasubee, and despite having less raw power than them, he makes it up with his wits.

Yamashina Residence

    Ōishi Kuranosuke

Ōishi Kuranosuke

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5688_797298424.jpg
Voiced by: Hatsumi Takada
The head chamberlain of the Harima Province and part of the former Ako domain, making her the second most powerful person behind Takumi-no-Kami. As such, she manages its economy and day to day running, but she largely shirks this responsability to enjoy her personal hobbies and her ability to govern is often questioned by the other retainers. She also has a surprisingly childish personality to the point her daughter Matsunojou has to take care of her, and it eventually earned her the nickname "Daylight Lantern", due to her perceived uselessness.

After the loss of the Ako Domain, most of the ronin joined her in the hopes of fighting back against the shogunate and getting revenge on Kira, becoming the leader of the ronin in the process. However, unlike the majority, she prefers to step down and instead attempts to restore the domain through negociations and patience, causing the ronin to split into different factions.
  • Absurdly Youthful Mother: She has a child who is already a young adult, yet she looks like her older sister instead.
  • Being Personal Isn't Professional: Downplayed. She still acts childish at work and it causes some of the ronin to think of her as a nuisance, but she will immediately drop the act if things become serious.
  • Big Good: For the first three routes, she's the main spearhead of the good guys and leads all of the ronin by herself.
  • The Chessmaster: Many of the ronin's successes come from her ability to always think ahead of her enemies and sometimes her own allies. One of the few major examples is when she accepts to joins the Edo Radicals in order to control them from above.
  • The Leader: To the pacifists, and later the Ako Ronin as a whole after reuniting the other factions under her command.
  • Xanatos Gambit: During the first confrontation with Yasubee, a duel is requested to decide whether Kuranosuke joins the plot to assassinate Kira or force Yasubee to step down. Regardless of who wins, it benefits Kuranosuke since losing the match would mean she would take control of the radicals from the inside.

Ōishi Matsunojou / Chikara

Voiced by: Jun Miruno
The beloved daughter of Kuranosuke, who often has to remind her mother of her duties because of her childish personality. Because of that, she tries a little too hard to become a great samurai herself to inherit her mother's place, but she's often scolded for being immature and impatient.
  • Love at First Sight: Falls in love with Suguha in mere seconds after he saved her from rabid wolves.
  • Naïve Newcomer: She starts as a very amateurish samurai with next to no skills in swordsmanship, and spends half of the game training under Suguha and Kuranosuke. It's also the main reason why the latter refuses to let her join the assassination plot.
  • Took a Level in Badass: After the loss of the Ako domain, she starts living with her mother in a remote forest, and begins to train with the sword and assist her mother with the domain restoration.

    Fuwa Kazuemon

Fuwa Kazuemon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5688_1611798498.jpg
Voiced by: Kei Mizusawa
A former samurai from the Ako Domain, who was expelled from causing problems following a certain incident. However, she has a strong loyalty towards her lord, and immediately came to Kuranosuke following Asano's seppeku, vowing to become her bodyguard no matter what.

She enjoys challenging strong foes in sword fights and is rather rash, becoming one of the most powerful assets of the Ako Ronin in their plan to kill Kira, but she has a hard time getting along with Yasubee, the only warrior rivalling her strength.
  • The Big Guy: Courtesy of acting like a beast in battle and towering over most of the other ronin.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Uses an unorthodox fighting style and is not above using her environment to gain the upper hand in a fight.
  • Foil: With Yasubee. She stands out as one of the most powerful Ako Ronin along with her, but she has a very rough personality and lacks common sense.
  • Large Ham: She has very over-the-top lines and talks like a brutish thug.
  • Stripperiffic: Being homeless, she has a very exposing costume showing her cleavage and underwear.

    Kayano Sanpei

Kayano Sanpei

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5688_1170527036.jpg
Voiced by: Masako Hiura
One of the two messengers who rode on the palanquin to deliver news about the death of Asano Takumi-no-Kami. Formerly a vassal of the Oshima Clan, she came to work for the Ako Domain at the recommandation of her lord, something she accepted but leaves her somewhat conflicted about her loyalty because of her earnest personality.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: She's the bodyguard of Kuranosuke, the strongest of the Ako Ronin.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Downplayed. She first appeared along with Hayami when transporting the palanquin to deliver the news about the death of Takumi-no-Kami, but left the Ronin some time after. She's formally introduced in Chikara's route as a bodyguard for the Yamashina residence, because of Kuranosuke being ill at the time.
  • Sacrificial Lion: She dies at the hands of Shinpachi, buying enough time for Suguha to save Chikara afterwards. However, her death causes him to snap once again.

Edo Radicals

    Horibe Yasubee

Horibe Yasubee (born Nakayama Taketsune)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5688_218366976.jpg
Voiced by: Atsumi Tanezaki
The single strongest warrior of the Ako Ronin, behind Kuranosuke herself. Originally part of the samurai nobility of the Shibata Domain, her father became the victim of a conspiracy resulting in his death, and she became a ronin at a young age after killing the conspirators in cold blood. She later become (in)famous for killing over ten people in the Battle of Takadanobaba, and was later invited to work for the Ako Domain.

After her lord's death, she gathered many followers as the leader of the Edo Radicals, who prefer vengeance above all else, including the restoration of the domain.
  • Barehanded Blade Block: She manages to win her first duel against Kazuemon by stopping her sword with her arm. However, it also causes her to stop using a sword for a while, due to her large wound.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: After injuring her left arm, she's left unable to fight for a few weeks and thus delaying the revenge plot.
  • Honor Before Reason: Easily the most honor-driven character of the story. After witnessing the death of her lord before her very eyes, she has made her goal to kill Kira no matter the cost, creating her own faction of radicals in Edo and plotting to assassinate him and avenge her master.
  • The Leader: To the Edo Radicals.
  • Worf Had the Flu: She loses her second fight against Kazuemon, due to the trauma she caused to her cousin Oume and weakening her will to fight.

    Hazama Shinroku

Hazama Shinroku

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5688_263515264.jpg
Voiced by: Hyosei
A former samurai of the Ako Domain living in Edo, who has a strong admiration for Yasubee. After the death of Asano, she quickly joined the Edo Radicals and began their second-in-command, tasked to collect information regarding Kira. Normally a calm and taciturn person, she becomes a very different person when she does talk, usually by spouting insults.
  • Big Eater: She's always searching for new kind of sweets and dumplings to eat in each city she visits.
  • The Gadfly: Tends to say outrageous things to get a good reaction out of people, especially Suguha.
  • Rei Ayanami Expy: Downplayed. She has a very quiet personality and blue hair, with a bit of a Dark and Troubled Past but she doesn't suffer any injury. Also, she has a tendency to mess with people.

    Takada Gunbee

Takada Gunbee

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4758_1415319892.png
A direct descendant of the Hōzōin-ryū school of spearsmanship, nicknamed "Gunbee of the Spear". She possesses a tendency toward guile and belligerence, but is extremely nice to her friends and companions, making her a combative and easily excitable warrior who's good friends with Yasubee.
  • The Lancer: Her extrovert and carefree personality makes her the primary Foil to her friend Yasubee.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: She's mysteriously missing from the Edo Radicals near the end of 1702, with no explanation given to the rest of the Ronin. The second route reveals she was forced to quit because of her unstable financial situation and become a merchant, but ended up suffering grievous wounds at the hands of a cursed Ichigaku when trying to attack Kira alone the day of her departure.

  • Shrinking Violet: Her default personality if she stops eating plums for a while.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Due to her regularly switching personalities, she alternates between being a sweet and very timid girl to a very assertive and confident warrior.

Voiced by: Miya Serizono
  • Number Two: She's the second in command behind Kuranosuke.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: She pretends to be a coward who refuses to take part in the assassination plot, fooling Suguha and all of the other ronin where she really was working on a backup plan should the raid ended up in failure.
  • Unspoken Plan Guarantee: Thanks to keeping the details of the second plan to herself and later Suguha, the second assassination attempt on Kira in Chikara's route is a huge success.

  • Big Damn Heroes: Intervenes at the last minute during the fight against Ichigaku.

    Mimura Jirouzaemon

Mimura Jirouzaemon

  • Chef of Iron: Despite being a mere cook, he's able to fight off several of Kira's guards as seen during the raid.
  • Humble Hero: He's recognized as a warrior by Kuranosuke herself, yet doesn't brag about it despite his status being higher than most of people of his rank.
  • Out of Focus: Starts off as a background character with some lines in the first route, but he stops appearing altogether afterwards. Somewhat justified since Suguha doesn't join Kuranosuke's faction starting from the second route.
  • The One Guy: He's the only male ronin with a proper portrait and actual lines, with the rest being background characters.

  • Conflicting Loyalty: When the idea of revenge is taking form among the radicals, they travel in Edo in the hopes of joining them, but they also hesitate since it means they would lose their newfound status as samurai again.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: The two are almost always seen together, and they consider each other best friends.
  • Important Haircut: Both of them chose to cut their hair following their master's death, in order to turn over a new leaf.

  • Driven to Suicide: Upon realizing he murdered his own sister, he ultimately chooses to kill himself out of guilt, hoping they would be Together in Death.
  • Faking the Dead: His suicide in the last route was actually a ploy organized by Suguha to throw off historical events in order to fool everyone else into thinking he's dead.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: He absolutely loves his sister and would do everything to protect her from harm and unwanted admirers...Which in turn causes him to murder her after he loses his sanity, in a vain attempt to prevent her from leaving him.

Mouri Koheita

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4758_1798583554.png
Voiced by: Tomoe Tamiyasu
  • Intrepid Merchant: She makes money by selling exotic things and wears a mask as a headgear. However, by the time of the game she doesn't have much money left.
  • Little Sister Heroine: Invoked. After seeing Suguha attempting to confront Kira's guard by himself in Yasubee's route, she begins to admire him and proclaims herself as his little sister, wanting to learn swordsmanship with him.
  • The Mole: Due to her sister's illness, she's short on money and eventually strikes a deal with the Kira clan to pay off her medications and buy her nice things, in exchange for intel on the Ako Ronin's moves.
  • Sacrificial Lion: She's the first character seen dying on-screen, who sacrificed her life to give a description of Kira's estate.

Wataya Takumi

  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: He's arrested near the end of Yasubee's route, on the suspicion of lending money to the Ako Ronin. Thanks to his father's influence in the city, he quickly goes out of jail.
  • Secret Test of Character: Before lending money to the Edo Radicals, he asks Yasubee and Suguha to beg for it on theur knees. After seeing them doing so without hesitation despite their status as a samurai (meant to be above simple merchants and moneylenders such as him), he immediately accepts to give them money, admitting he was only doing so on a whim as a friend of Kuranosuke.

Ohatsu

The little sister of Hashimoto Heizaemon, who means the world to him. After her brother became a ronin, she began to work as a clam seller on his behalf to help him carry out his duty as a Ako Ronin.
  • Adorably Precocious Child: At work, she's quite professional despite her young age, and happily sells clams to everyone she meets.
  • Morality Pet: Becomes one to Kousa Kazumi after befriending her in the fourth route, not knowing her job.
  • The Nicknamer: She likes to uses nicknames for her friends, usually by repeating the first part of their names, such as Sugu-Sugu or Yasu-Yasu.

    Yatou Emoshichi

Yatou Emoshichi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4758_221732556.png
Voiced by: Akari Harukawa
The eldest daughter of the Yatou family whom Suguha was adopted in, who is currently learning accounting from her father before her. Her small and frail body hinders her ability with a sword and makes her fall a lot, causing her something of a complex.
  • Little Sister Heroine: As the younger adopted sister of Suguha, she fills this role in the last route.
  • Naïve Newcomer: She's one of the weakest Ako Ronin, and is easily defeated by Fuwa on their first duel, unable to wield her sword correctly.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Despite her small frame, she eventually becomes part of the raid on Kira's estate and is tasked with guarding the main gate.

    Yatou Household

Yatou Chousuke and Sasaki Rui

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4758_254801925.png
Sasaki Rui
The two parents of the Yatou Family, who adopted the original Fukami Suguha when he was still a newborn. The family is affiliated with the Ako Domain, through Chousuke who manage the domain's financial affairs.
  • Action Dad: Downplayed. Chousuke used to be a warrior in his youth, but his illness prevent him to fight anymore, so he's relegated to a managing role.
  • Good Parents: They manage to raise four daughters and the original Suguha, and are loving parents to them.
  • Glamorous Single Mother: After Chousuke's death, Rui become the sole parent left for the Yatou sisters, but she doesn't have much problems to take care of them.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: Chousuke suffered from a chronic disease who made him cough a lot, and it's later suspected to be overwork on Kuranosuke's part, something that she feels guilty for.

Yatou Sayo, Kinu and Muku

Sayo voiced by: Hotori Asami
Kinu voiced by: Hiromi Igarashi
The three other daughters of the Yatou Family, with Sayo as the second oldest daughter alongside Kinu and Muku as the young twins.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Downplayed. They are this to Suguha, who find their presence a little annoying, but Sayo is surprisingly more mature despite her age, concerned by her older siblings well-being.
  • Cool Mask: Sayo likes to wear a Hannya mask to freak out Emoshichi, but it doesn't work too well on Suguha.
  • Chuunibyou: Sayo enjoys wearing her mask to imagine herself as a demon who came down from the mountains to curse her siblings.

    Yasubee's relatives

Okin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/76493.jpg
Voiced by: Kei Maeda
Yasubee's older sister who stayed in the family domain some time after Yasubee became a ronin. She now lives in a remote village in Northern Japan. She became the adoptive mother of Oume, and told her tales of her sister's feats as a samurai.

Oume

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5688_1011041553.jpg
Voiced by: Mika Enoki
Yasubee's half-sister born out of wedlock between their father and a peasant woman, who was adopted by Okin as her own daughter. Having heard stories of her aunt's feats, she dreams of becoming a warrior like her one day.
  • Big Sister Worship: Views her honorary aunt Yasubee as the coolest samurai of Japan, thanks to the stories of Okin.
  • Damsel in Distress: Suguha and Yasubee first meet her in a snowy forest, attacked by bandits.
  • Morality Pet: Accidentally becomes one to Yasubee after getting to know her, and witnessing her killing an assassin in cold blood. Following this event, Yasubee struggles in fighting, unsure about using her sword to kill.

    Fukami Kojiri

Fukami Kojiri

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4758_1928790775.png
Voiced by: Maki Tomonaga
Suguha's older sister, who regularly practices Kendo in her club and act as a teacher to younger trainees. A huge Tomboy at heart, she has a bright and masculine personality, but she regularly treats her brother like a slave due to his passive personality at the beginning of the story. She also claims to be a history nerd, but seems to being already bored of the Sengoku Jidai, seeking new stories to discover.
  • Action Girl: Downplayed. Being a modern Japanese citizen in all aspects, she's not a fighter but she's pretty good at kendo, and trains younger people under her wing with surprisingly good lessons.
  • Big Brother Attraction: Implied to be the case, when Suguha confronts her about why she treats him like a slave, she answers in a very quiet tone, saying he's the only man she trusts more than anyone.
  • Big Sister Bully: She often hits her brother with her shinai when things don't go her way or whenever he feels unmotivated.

Kira Clan

    Kira Kouzuke-no-Suke

Kira Kouzuke-no-Suke

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4758_1828924751.png
The latest representative of the Kira Clan, who's said to be the direct descendants of the Seiwa Genji bloodline. Due to the clan's prestige, all of its members are given the role of Master of Ceremonies (Koke). Managing the official meetings between the Imperial family and the Shogunate from a young age, he nonetheless takes his role seriously and kept his position for several decades, earning a reputation as an honorable man. He also has ties with the Uesugi Clan through his son's marriage.

However, he becomes the unfortunate victim of a plot destined to get rid of Asano Takumi-no-Kami, and gets cursed by Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, the Shogun's right hand, causing him to become uncharacteristically selfish and corrupted in her presence. Eventually, he unwillingly causes a series of event that would be known as the Ako Incident, with its Ronin attempting to kill him no matter what.
  • Curse: At the very beginning of the story, he's cursed by the Shogunate's higher-ups to become their puppet in their plot to gain more power for themselves.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: In Chikara's route, he turns out to be a body double with a more powerful curse than the original, meaning he's only a step for Suguha, who later needs to find the whereabouts of the original.
  • Final Boss: Of Kuranosuke's route in his cursed form.
  • Minor Major Character: He has one of the most powerful status of feudal Japan, but his role in the story is fairly minimal, only appearing at the beginning of the game and at the end of each route.
  • The Unfought: In Emoshichi's route, the body double goes down without a fight thanks to Kazumi's wits and after threatening Ogyū Sorai to help the ronin.
  • Zero-Effort Boss: He's the last enemy fought in Chikara's route, but lacking the powerful curse of his body double, Suguha kills him in one stroke.

    Shimizu Ichigaku

Shimizu Ichigaku / Kousa Kazumi (born Kira Kazumi)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4758_567894078.png
Voiced by: Sahomi Koyama
A vassal of the Kira Clan, who dutifully worked for them for years. Suspicious of the fact that her lord's personality suddenly changed, she nonetheless continue to follow him no matter what. In battle, she wields two swords, using a rather complex fighting style who allows her to take on two opponents at once. Because she has honed herself through violence and cruelty but has a calm demeanor, her character is difficult to gauge, but she's certainly the most dangerous enemy the Ako Ronin could ever face.

In the fourth route, her body and mind are taken over by her descendant from the modern world, Kousa Kazumi, whose goal is to protect Kira more actively and ruin the 47 Ronin reputation, and quickly antagonizes Suguha because of their opposing views on history.
  • Affably Evil: Despite her reputation and scary looks, she's actually polite and affable to her enemies as long as they don't attack her.
  • Anti-Hero: By Emoshichi's route, she eventually realizes that Asano and the 47 Ronin weren't at fault, and becomes an unlikely ally to Suguha, helping him behind the scenes to find out the true mastermind the Ako Incident.
  • Anti-Villain: As herself, she's merely a Punch-Clock Villain who only opposes the Ako Ronin out of duty for her lord, and (rightfully) thinks the whole incident to be made up by a third party. As Kazumi, she wants to repair her ancestor's reputation, tarnished by the numerous fictional accounts of the ChuShinGura depicting him as a full-blown villain while painting the Ronin as perfect heroes.
  • Ax-Crazy: Gets cursed by Ogyū Sorai in Yasubee's route, turning her into a psychotic warrior who gets off on killing people related to the Ako Ronin, unlike her more reserved self.
  • The Dragon: To Kouzuke-no-Suke, acting as his most powerful bodyguard.
  • Dual Wielding: She uses the Nitoryu school style, involving the usage of two swords to fight, making her a very dangerous opponent.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: Under the curse in Yasubee's route, she swiftly defeats Shinroku and attempts to have her way with her before Suguha and Yasubee's arrival.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Near the end of her route, she turns a new leaf and helps Suguha to save the ronin from their seppuku.
  • Identical Grandson: Kazumi is a perfect copy of her ancestor Ichigaku.
  • Mysterious Backer: Becomes this following her Heel–Face Turn, but she leaves most of the work to Suguha, instead acting as his backup from the sidelines, hiding from Kaguya.
  • Sex–Face Turn: Invoked by Kazumi. Feeling guilty about Ohatsu's death in her route, she goes out of her way to provoke a depressed Suguha and tempt him into having sex with her, feeling it was what she deserves. After the act, both of them make amends with each other and start working together to stop Kaguya.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: As a vassal of the Kira Clan, she doesn't have much choice but to oppose the Ako Ronin who want to take her master's head.
  • The Tease: Both Ichigaku and Kazumi really like to tease poor Suguha, espcially Kazumi in Bushi no Kodou.

The representative of the Uesugi Clan, which has strong ties with the Kira clan due to Kouzuke-no-Suke's son being married to them.
  • Anti-Villain: She doesn't directly oppose the Ako Ronins' plot to kill Kouzuke-no-Suke, unwilling to be an enemy of the Tokugawa Shogunate. She makes a single exception to this rule in Yasubee's route, where Ogyū Sorai asks her to deal with the Edo Radicals.
  • Cavalry Refusal: With the exception of Yasubee's route, she doesn't intervene when the Ako Ronin start their plot. Justfied since the Shogunate threatened her to revoke her status should she help the Kira Clan.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: While she's technically working for the Kira Clan, she doesn't actively work towards protecting their lord despite their alliance, not wanting to put the Uesugi's reputation at stake.

    Saruhashi

An assassin working for the Uesugi Clan, sent to kill Kuranosuke and later Yasubee.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: All of her fights ends with her defeat, since she's an assassin unfit for duels. She only manages to kill Suguha once, by stabbing him In the Back while he was distracted.
  • Fair-Play Villain: Upon meeting Suguha, she thinks he's no big deal and starts underestimating him, leading to her swift defeat.
  • Starter Villain: She's the very first enemy fought by Suguha.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Her life is spared by Suguha, and she later returns the favor at the very end of Kuranosuke's route by killing him.

A strange and enigmatic woman met by Suguha after the latter fled from Yamashina in Chikara's route. She's later revealed to be a vassal of the Uesugi Clan on the run, who regularly disobeys orders to go on improvised trips and one of their strongest assets. She's never seen without her Odachi, a long sword which she can manipulate with ease despite its size.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Girl: She self-proclaims to be the best swordswoman around, and certainly lives up to her reputation thanks to her raw power and mastery of the Odachi, until Suguha defeated her twice.
  • Attack Hello: Greets Suguha by attempting to murder him because he gave her a weird look.
  • Ax-Crazy: She has no qualms about killing people on a whim if she's slightly bothered by them.
  • BFS: The only character to use an Odachi in the story, and she's crazy good with it.
  • Blood Knight: She thrives on battles against strong opponents, and Suguha defeating her is one of the reasons she follows him.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: Usually fights one-handed with her Odachi, but if things gets serious, she'll use both hands. Oh, and she can use her other eye, too.
  • Living with the Villain: During Suguha's elopement, they travelled together, moving accross Japan without knowing of their respective identities.
  • Love at First Punch: Instantly falls in love with Suguha after he defeats her in their first meeting.
  • Yandere: Her love for Suguha makes her quite affectionate, to the point of being obsessive. She also doesn't take it well after learning he also has ties with the Ako Ronin and already has Chikara as a potential Love Interest.

The 5th Shogun of the Tokugawa clan, and the ruler of Japan during the Ako Incident. She's (in)famously known for her love of animals, to the point of instituting many animal protection laws, particularly for dogs, earning herself the nickname of "Dog Shogun" as a result.

Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu

One of the retainers of Tsunayoshi, and the most influential individual among them, making him the most powerful member of the Shogunate due to the immense amount of trust placed in him. He's the one responsible for the whole Ako Incident, caused by his attempt to confiscate the Ako Domain for the Shogunate.
  • Big Bad: The main villain of the game, who caused the downfall of the Ako Ronins.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: He's technically working for Tsunayoshi, but he runs the government in her place.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: Since he was born into a family with close ties to the Shogunate, he doesn't fight, instead using his connections to send assassins after the Ako Ronins.

Voiced by: Hiromi Igarashi
The main inspector who was in charge of interrogating both Asano and Kira during the incident in the Corridor of the Pines. Unlike most members of the shogunate, she has a certain sense of honor who makes her weary of Yoshiyasu.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She's pretty helpful to the heroes in Yasubee's route, feeling indebted to Asano for letting her die.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Her most notable action is to help Suguha and Yasubee hide in Edo for a few days, which turned out to be critical for the Ako Ronin's victory in Yasubee's route.
  • White Sheep: One of the few officials of the Shogunate who's a good person.

Voiced by: Akane Sanada
The daimyo of the Ako Domain, who's loved by her subordinates thanks to her generous personality and her devotion to the samurai code, despite its lack of relevance in the current Edo period. She becomes the unfortunate target of a conspiracy organized by Yoshiyasu, who wants to steal the Ako Domain for the Shogunate: After several days of escalating tensions with a cursed Kozuke-no-Suke, she ultimately wounds him with her sword, condemning herself to seppuku and leaving all of her retainers without home as her domain is confiscated by the Shogunate.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: Her seppuku and unjust treatment of the whole incident is what kickstarts the entire Ako Incident, who intend to kill Kira to avenge her.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: She's loved by many of her retainers, explaining why many of them are eager to avenge her in her name.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Downplayed. She dies very early in the story, but Suguha gets to learn several things on her past in the later routes by several of her former retainers.

    Konoe Family

Konoe Tadanori

A member of the Tadanori family of nobles and one of Kuranosuke's acquaintances, who pretends to be a servant.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He's a kuge with greater resources and money than the average samourai, but he's an helpful ally to Kuranosuke.
  • Servile Snarker: Isn't above mocking his master or snarking at him. Later subverted when it turns out he was the master in th first place.
  • Simple, yet Opulent: He wears a traditional attire usually worn by nobles.

Konoe's servant

The servant of Tadanori, a rather unattractive and leecherous man.
  • The Bait: His role was to falsely marry Chikara on her route, set up by Kuranosuke to get Suguha out of his PTSD and bringing him back to his senses.
  • Fat Bastard: Downplayed. He's not a bad person, but his leecherous views on young girls makes him a little unnerving for Suguha.
  • Gonk: By far the ugliest character of the series, looking like a stereotypical otaku.
