    Nick Gautier
"Conceived in violence to fight violence!"

Nick Gautier is the average boy from across the tracks that this series focuses on. Going through school, work, and life in general doesn't get more crazy than when it's happening to him. But he handles it pretty well for a 16 year old.

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: But he will snark all the way to the end.
  • Always Save the Girl: Enslave himself to Noir for all eternity or let Kody die. Hhm...
  • Battle Couple: Him and Kody.
  • Berserk Button: Make fun of his mom and you'll see why Good Is Not Soft.
    • Hurting Kody has become a close second. Her getting kidnapped angered him enough to trigger his temporary Malachai transformation.
    • He mentions to his father that his classmates called him Dickless Nicholas to land him in a few fights.
  • Big Eater: He's not seen eating a whole lot, but Rosa's cooking seems to slide down his throat and Simi mentions that Nick is the only one that can eat as much as her. Simi said that.
  • Born Lucky: Depends on what you call lucky. He could potentially become the greatest hero ever or the worst monster ever.
  • Bully Hunter: He hates bullies with a passion. Considering the fact he's been bullied by his dad, coach, classmates and probably many others, it's justified.
  • Chick Magnet: Despite being a nerd, he has managed to get a few girls' interest. To name a few: Kody, Casey, Tiyana, Brynna, and Jill.
  • Cool Sword: Is given one by his future self. It can kill even gods.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He's this In-Universe. While the reader can often see he has deep thoughts, he projects an armor of sarcasm and ADHD that makes characters underestimate him. That is why people are genuinely surprised when he shows focus and attention to detail they never would have expected of him.
  • Determinator: This is one of his dominant traits. I'm the son of the sum of all evil? That's life. Every demon in the universe wants my head? Guess I better learn these powers. There's an apocalypse going on and I have to do an Impossible Task in a short time? Just like last week. I'm stuck in Hel and I'm going to be sold? Let me spend hours using my fire powers to try to break free, because I don't just sit around.
  • The Demon Who Does Nothing: Whenever he's not battling supernatural catastrophes he is more than happy to act like the unassuming squire rather than cause mischief.
  • Disappeared Dad: Subverted. Nick mentions that his dad sometimes came home on parole and it always got violent. He knows where his father is, he just wishes that this was the case. This changes when he dies at the end of the fourth book.
  • Hot-Blooded: Doesn't take abuse or threats sitting down. He's challenged dark hunters, gods, and the grim reaper; all of whom could kill with a flick of their finger.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: He is a deconstruction of this. It's not so much that he blatantly jumps into situations, it's just that he is so new to the supernatural world and situations often force him to go in guns ablazin. As he gets more use to the world and his powers, he starts planning things out and making preparations. It still looks like this to others.
  • Magnetic Hero: Many characters comment on his ability to draw people in with his charisma
Kody after losing her anger at Nick: "He was just too charming for his own good."
  • Mama's Boy: His mom loves him unconditionally and he is quick to reciprocate that love. They are all each other had for years and it is obvious that Nick and his mom only function well because of each other.
  • Noble Demon: Even though he is part of a race of demons that are considered to be the sum of all evil in the universe, Nick is decent. He tries not to be prejudiced against others, stopped Ted from bullying Wren, etc.
  • Odd Friendship: The 14 year old Nick is best friends with an eleven thousand year old god named Ash. Word of God has said this is because he treats Ash like he's any other regular guy.
  • Only Friend: Is this to Caleb. Granted it's mainly because Caleb has to be around to protect him, but Nick notices that he only really talks to him and he is usually more open to making jokes when Nick is around to banter with.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: The series isn't even half way over, but his fire powers have helped him reach this level quickly.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: Zigzagged. He's actually six foot four, but due to the fact that most of his enemies are supernatural shape-shifters, his size doesn't really matter to them. That doesn't mean he doesn't continue to give said creatures powerful beat downs.
  • Playing with Fire: Can light people on fire just by thinking it. The worst part is that he did it because of his anger, which shows his Malachai side is getting stronger.
  • Power of Friendship: He always trusts in his friends. It has gotten him in trouble many times and many people have remarked how naïve his mentality is in this world. Still, it has gotten him many allies and saved his life just as much if not more than it has threatened his life.
  • Power of Love: A main theme in the story. The love Nick feels for his mom and friends is what gives him his humanity. Half the things Nick does is out of love.
  • Power of Trust: In book five, when learning the tragic story of new member Zavid, Kody mentions that all Malachai have an ability to instinctively know the inner heart and pain of people. Every Malachai has used it to harm and manipulate others. Nick uses it to empathize with people and trust them with his life.
  • Weirdness Magnet: If it defies all logic, it's happening to Nick. In the fifth book, when stuck in a different universe, seeing his friends are enemies, his boss is dead, and Ash hates humanity, being chased by demonic monkeys, and seeing a chair pop up out of nowhere his only reaction to finding out his best friend in that universe is the grandson of a god is a lazy shrug.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Downplayed since he is a Knight in Sour Armor. Still he has a surprisingly large amount of optimism and his complaining never really goes into full on depression or inaction except in the third book when he almost kills himself. Characters lampshade his ability to see opportunities in very hard times.
  • Wild Card: His father figure is Bubba, who is the epitome of the wild card.

    Nekoda Kennedy
  • Badass Adorable: She's considered very cute by a lot of people, most especially Nick.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She's very kind and helpful, but she's very dangerous. Especially to Nick.
  • Birds of a Feather: Somewhat. She says in the fifth book that one of the things she likes about Nick is that his optimism and Determinator style is very much like her father's.
  • Born Winner: If the fifth book is anything to go by, Kody has a very strong legacy.
  • Broken Bird: Has seen everyone she ever loved killed. It's put her in a weird position because she's in love with the killer. Or at least the killer before he becomes a killer. It Makes Sense in Context.
  • The Cynic: Not shown often because she is so sweet, but her inner dialogue shows she is bitter with her life.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Nick did this. While she is very sweet on the surface, she tries to put a great deal of emotional distance between her and him. It takes a while for her to fall in love with him and truly believe he can avoid being the Malachai.
  • First Girl Wins: The first named woman of the series after Cherise, Nick's mom. It doesn't take them to long to get together either.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: Uses Katanas frequently. Nick loves it.
  • Only Sane Woman: She shares this role with Caleb. He gives the more realistic (and pessimistic) advice about situations, but during the situations she is the most strategic and focused member whereas he and Nick usually engage in Casual Danger Dialogue.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Hurt Nick, and you'll see why she's the prominent Action Girl of the series.

    Caleb Malphas
  • The Ace: Is this at his and Nick's school. He's popular, rich, good-looking, MVP level athlete, and drives a Cool Car.
  • Aloof Ally: Could care less if Nick dies. He only wants his freedom. Though they do become close friends later on.
  • Animorphism: Can turn into a raven. Word of God says he can do more, but this is his Animal Motif.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Towards Nick. The few times this is shown, Caleb is empathetic, kind, patient, and full of useful advice.
  • Bromantic Foil: The Ace Caleb is best friends with Nick.
  • Casual Danger Dialogue: He and Nick are guilty of this a lot. Though Nick tries to joke his way through situations while Caleb usually tries to maintain a calm and in control attitude.
  • Hidden Depths: Had a wife he was very in love with and fought against the Malachai in the first war. His current situation and attitude is due to centuries of disappointment after disappointment.
  • Like Brother and Sister: To Kody. They don't trust each other much, but they do joke around and talk like to siblings joking on one another.
  • Mayfly–December Romance: Says he had this in the fourth book. However, it's implied that her death was something other than age.
  • Only Sane Man: Shares this role with Kody. He is often less willing to go along with Nick's ideas and is more realistic about situations. Still, there are moments where he is just as willing to Let's Get Dangerous! as Nick is and that is when Kody jumps in.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Stoic to Nick's Hot-Blooded.
  • The Stoic: Tries very hard to keep a calm demeanor no matter what. It's easy to tell that a situation has truly gone to hell when he starts freaking out.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Is describe by just about everyone. Howwever this is simply A Form You Are Comfortable With as his true appearance is...shall we say not flattering.
  • With Friends Like These...: Almost bordering on frenimies given how quick he is to insult Nick. His only motivation for helping Nick in the beginning is because if Nick dies, Caleb will wish he had died with him.

    Cherise Gautier
"Laugh at your dreams. Everyone else does."

  • Almighty Mom: No One mouths off to Cherise when she's on a tirade, especially if she's talking to someone she feels hurt Nick.
  • Divine Parentage: Cherise is the daughter of Jared, making her half-human, half-sephiroth.
  • Doting Parent: Though she isn't oblivious to Nick's fault and never spoils him, she always tries to show Nick she loves who he is.
From Word of God: "Her most prized possession is Nick and she never lets him forget that. There’s nothing in the world she loves more than to see his face and hear his voice."
  • Mood-Swinger: Can go from cheerful to pissed at the drop of the hat.
  • Mum Looks Like a Sister: Looks very young and when people look at her and Nick it is a case of mom looks like an older sister. This is justified since Cherise was pregnant with Nick at thirteen.
  • Properly Paranoid: Does not trust Kyrian with her son. This is smart since he is a Daimon Hunter and being associated with him is dangerous. Ironically, it's 'she' who dies in the future. Though Nick isn't doing much better. Also ironic is that she acts like a Doting Parent to Acheron, who is Kyrian's boss.
  • Single Mom Stripper: Was the only way a thirteen year old with a baby could make any sort of money. In book two, she loses her job but finds a much better one working as a waitress at Sanctuary.

    Michael Daniel "Bubba" Burdette
  • Agent Mulder: Bubba believes in just about anything. Most times, he's correct; other times, he's arrested.
  • Hidden Depths: Bubba's come a long way from the stereotype redneck in his first appearance.

    Xevikan Daraxerxes
Imprisoned for betraying the Kallosum, Xev is the oldest and (perhaps) the most powerful of the Malachai's generals.
  • Hidden Depths: He may be surly, but it's understandable, consider that he had a wife and child and has been imprisoned for thousands upon thousands of years. He was also willing to protect Cherise from Dagon.

    Ambrose Malachai/Nick Gautier
A Dark-Hunter claiming to be Nick's uncle, but is actually Nick's future self from the original Dark Hunters timeline.
