Introduced in Surge

     Asahi (Hizashi) Brothers

Tropes that apply to both

  • Alliterative Name: In the Dub; Hikaru and Hyuga Hizashi
  • Family Theme Naming: Overlaps with Meaningful Name. They are named with words related to the sun. Their Japanese surname "Asahi" means "morning sun", "Hikaru" means "ray of light" and "Hyuga" means "sunny place".
    • Their surname in the English dub also counts, with "Hizashi" meaning "sunlight".
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: Played with. Hyuga and Hikaru are hoping to join Valt and Aiger in the Ultimate Tag Series but never consider pairing up with each other. In fact, at first they actively avoid pairing up due to clashing styles.
  • Instant Expert: Subverted. Both Hyuga and Hikaru prove to be strong Bladers right after creating their Beys. Though admittedly, it takes them both a while to master the Lightning Launch, with Hyuga, in particular, taking longer. Hikaru doesn't become good overnight either, but is willing to put in the time and effort to become one. It helps that he's more analytical than Hyuga, meaning he understands situations a lot easier and can learn from his mistakes.
  • Limit Break:
    • Hyperion Flamebringer's limit breaker system allows it to protrude its blades out even further along with a strong push upon activating limit break.
    • Helios Flamebringer's limit breaker system allows it to add extra blades and because they spin out. They also help absorb attacks to reduce the impact of attacks. Upon activation, the spinning motion of the extra blades can repel other Beys.
  • Sibling Team: They are the main protagonists of Surge, and are the first pair of Burst protagonists to be siblings.

  • Blue Is Heroic: His hair is blue, and he wears blue clothes, and his Battle Aura is blue.
  • Catchphrase: "A hero has to be ____", it can be interpreted as him boasting about his status as the main character.
  • Cool Big Bro: He's a year older than Hyuga, but still loves and cares about him nonetheless.
  • Heavenly Blue: His beyblade Helios gives off a divine blue aura.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Hikaru really looks up to Aiger as he was inspired to start Beyblading after seeing Aiger defeat Valt for the World Champion title. When it was announced later he was going to team up with Aiger in the tag tournament, Hikaru responded with Squee.
  • Power of the Sun: His Bey is named after the sun god Helios from Greek mythology.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue to his younger brother’s Red, all in terms of personality and clothing/Bey/aura color.
  • Tsurime Eyes: In contrast to his brother Hyuga, emphasize his strong-willed and prideful personality.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: He’s much more level-headed and analytical, as opposed to his reckless brother.

Hyuga Asahi (Hizashi)

  • Alliterative Name: Hyuga Hizashi in the Dub, just like his brother.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: While previous protagonists have this mindset, Hyuga takes this to its logical extreme. While Valt's attacks are based in speed, and Aiger and Dante's are multiform and can adjust on the fly, Hyuga only cares about high power and impact, which is fine, but doesn't think about ways to utilize it effectively, basically boiling down to "strike now, ask questions later", which gets him into trouble despite his talent and training. He never has a strategy even in team battles, but will cooperate when the opportunity presents itself. In a tag-battle, utilizing his high impact abilities with the right teammate will deliver devastating results.
  • Badass Adorable: He's cute, short, and a pro at blading all together.
  • Cheerful Child: He's a sweet-hearted child, and has a wild imagination to go along with it.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Gushes over Lane's hedgehog, Harry.
  • Fiery Redhead: He's a cute redheaded kid with a fiery temper to match.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Much like his older brother Hikaru looks up to Aiger, Hyuga looks up to Valt as seen much later that he wanted Valt to be his tag partner in the last tournment.
  • High-Pressure Emotion: His face turns red when under pressure.
  • In-Series Nickname: He often refers to himself as "Bamboo Shoot" or "Pineapple" in the dub. And he's actually rather proud of said nickname.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Unlike his brother, Hyuga likes to charge into battles head on without thinking of any strategies. While he puts in just as much hard work and effort into blading as his brother, his recklessness gets him into more trouble. But on the rare occasions he does formulate strategies, it turns Hyuga into a force of nature.
  • Power of the Sun: His Bey has a sun motif like his brother's and is named after the Titan Hyperion, the father of Helios.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Averted. His eyes are red, but he has not a single evil bone in his body.
  • Red Is Heroic: He's a red-headed hero in his heart and soul.
  • Tareme Eyes: In contrast to his brother Hikaru, although it's a big contrast to his Fiery Redhead personality.
  • Verbal Tic: He has a habit of Punctuated! For! Emphasis! and peppers his speech with onomatopoeia.
    • In the English dub, he adds "super-duper" whenever describing something.

Gun (Guy)

Voiced by: Sho Nogami (Japanese); Shannon McKain (English)
  • The Generic Guy: He doesn't have any stand-out features. Chuck is a hyperactive announcer, Reina is the photographer and token girl of the group, while Guy's just... there.

  • The Ace: Considering he's defeated both Lui and Free despite being only a rookie, that's saying something. Then in the Legends Festival, he manages to defeat Aiger in a rematch, and defeat Valt in the finals.
  • And Then What?: It becomes apparent in Surge ep. 18 that Lain never considered what he planned to do after defeating all of the Lengendary Bladers, as after beating Shu in their rematch he undergoes what could be considered an identity crisis.
  • Barrier Warrior: This is Vex Lucius' main gimmick.
  • Big Bad: The main antagonist of season 5, targeting all of the Legends to surpass them, brutalizing and willing to break any bey that gets in his path. However, he plays this more like Lui than a typical antagonist like Phi or Arthur as part of his character growth is learning to control his flare.
  • Blood Knight: He's on a mission to defeat all of the Legendary Bladers in order to fuel his Flare.
  • Deuteragonist: While he is the main antagonist, his progress throughout the series falls more in line as an aggressive rival. His progress as a character is learning from Shu how to control his flare.
  • Dub Name Change: His Beyblade, Variant Lucifer —> Vex Lucius (most likely due to religious context.)
  • Hero Killer: He's destroyed Ranjiro's Glide Roktavor and later Hikaru and Hyuga's Beyblades at the same time. And he plans on ending the Blading careers of all the Legendaries.
  • Limit Break: Lucifer the End/Lucius Endbringer's limit breaker system drops a free spinning ring which pushes away other Beys. Because of the free spinning ring, this also means that Lucius can deflect any oncoming attacks.
  • Pet the Dog: As aggressive and dangerous as he is, he does have a soft spot for his pet hedgehog, Harry.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: A variant. When his Flare is at full power, his pink hair develops light blue highlights.
  • A Pupil of Mine Until He Turned to Evil: He was once a student of Shu Kurenai, who offered him a spot on the Raging Bulls in order to help keep his Flare under control. Lain, unfortunately, had other ideas...
  • Purple Is Powerful: The aura of his Flare is purple in color and Lain is a very powerful blader and is capable of defeating the majority of the Legendary Bladers.
  • Signature Move: His beyblade's special moves include:
    • Vexing Wall(Variant Wall): Lucius channels power with the spinning Chassis blades to create a near impenetrable 2D.
    • Vexing Crush(Variant Crush): With the 2D Barrier activated, Lucius attacks and pins into the opposing Beyblade in between itself and the Beystadium's walls for a pincer attack. This can also break the Stadium walls and Beyblades.
    • Vexing Disaster(Variant Disaster): Lucius channels the power through the 12 barrier blades on the Beyblade's ring, charging at the opposing Beyblade.
    • Final Limit Breaker(Limit Break The End): Lucius' ring transforms and explosively opens a two free spinning ring that knocks down and pushes away all the other
    • Final Wall(The End Wall): Similar to Vexing Wall, Lucius channels power through the End Ring and generates a ring around the ring to knock down, deflect, and push away all incoming Beyblades.
  • Shadow Archetype: Much like Phi, Lain is more or less what Shu would be like if he had no one to save him from his obsession with power. In fact, Shu even directly compares Lain to his old self.
  • Sore Loser: His response to being defeated by Shu in Surge ep. 17 is to evolve Vex Lucius in Lucifer The End and challenge him to a rematch.
  • When He Smiles: When he starts doing this near the end of the season, you know he's actually having fun, something that Shu's been trying to do since picking him up as his apprentice.

Harry

  • Morality Pet: Pretty much the only character whom Lain shows any kindness towards.
  • Killer Rabbit: He's a tiny hedgehog who can go from cute to scary at the drop of a hat.
