I only heard from other people such as Mr. Enter and This Very Wiki regarding this series's quality that its bad. So I decided to watch a couple of the episodes myself and after reviewing them, I began to consider Teen Titans Go! to be a comedy that caters to children and only to children.
Why is that? Well the biggest and the most obvious reason to me is that it greatly disrespects both the DC lore along with their cartoon counterparts in favor of turning them into shallow one-dimensional slapsticks. It's not just the Toddler Titans that suffers but Batman, Gordon, Superman, Slade, the other Robin, or hell any DC characters that is going to appear in this story.
When you find other comedy cartoons what do most good ones have in common? Genuinely serious moments and humors that can make even the older demographics laugh. Here, comedy is their sole focus in this series and their jokes are so amateurish that when I laugh, it's not because I am suppose to laugh at them but because of how ridiculous the entire plot is.
And speaking of plots, it's incredibly shallow with the feature episode pretty much defines the entire plot and nothing more. There's not even any lore or backstories for us to explore. It's just a Titan dealing with the featured problem and once its over, are never mentioned again.
If Teen Titans Go! focuses on comedy with some serious moments, respects their comicbook counterparts, or even make the Titans likeable, it would have had an older fanbase. But as it stands now, my final verdict for this cartoon is a garbage 2/10 because it's basically just another slapstick comedy for children without any Parental Bonuses that is completely overshadowed by every other series of the same genre such Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, and Oggy and the Cockroaches.
"You're dead if you aim only for kids. Adults are only kids grown up, anyway."
— Walt Disney
@Phantom Heartless 5: he really said that? I suddenly have a renewed respect for the guy. Not that I didn't respect him already mind you.
@Theokal3: That's one of his most quoted sayings. And it's true. Too many people always use the tired "It's just for kids" excuse to justify bad cartoons. It's really irritating because it feels like people are insulting kids, thinking they're too stupid to understand tough concepts and it ignores cartoons like Gravity Falls and older cartoons that appealed to adults and kids.
That is one Bad Ass Walt Disney quote.
@Very Melon: Why, thank you. It seemed appropriate for this review.
Wow Disney said that, I didn't realize that and that explains why his movies cater to all ages.
Anyway, for comparison, look at Adventure Time. What does it caters to? Kids. And what genre is it primarily? Comedy which is what Teen Titans Go! is also aiming for yet Adventure time has serious moments (Everything about the Ice King's backstory, Finn and Flame Princess's relationship, and how Ooo came to be), has characters that are likeable and three-dimensional across both genders, has jokes that even adults will laugh at (and not just pure slapstick comedy too)note Let's see, there's Jake describing the tiers of love, flooping the pig, there's a lot of genuinely funny moments, but the biggest selling point of the show is the deep backstory and lore of how the AT characters came to be and everything regarding the Mushroom war. That's why Adventure Time is well-loved by all ages and why fans treats the show as seriously as an anime series. But TTG is only well-loved by children who have poor grasps of morality and jokes and is mostly hated by older demographics (such as me) because its such a childish cartoon that they shove it in our face to tell us that cartoon is "only for kids".
Regarding CN's favoritism of this show, I have no comment on it because in my country of Indonesia, Teen Titans Go airs three times per day and certainly never shows up on Toonami channels.
I think Teen Titans go is probably a fun show to make (at least if the voice actors are to be believed) and relatively cheap show to produce. This is probably why Cartoon Network goes out of their way to sell it.
...Disney understood. That man truly understood. :3
And someone else who also understood is you, Loekman 3. This was a really good review. You managed to shine light on everything that this show is doing wrong, and explaining it even without the comparisons to the old show.
Then what do you call this http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Radar/TeenTitansGo ?
Just being more childish.
