Are the books any good? Seems like the expansion of information is solid, but I'm wondering if the quality is actually decent.

I just love how the the Karma Meter point basically says "oh, it's so harsh! I mean, if you just horrifically MURDER two children for their resources while they scream and cry, you get a bad ending!". Just wanted to say that.

Is anyone planning to add examples from the newly released prequel novel and if so, where should we put them? Their own folder?

I was going to read the book, and then put some info about at the end of the introduction. Then if there enough notable tropes for it I was going to put them in their own folder after the In General one bu before the first game. I would go ahead with that.

Never trust anyone who uses "degenerate" as an insult.

This troper just realized one major piece of symbolism near the end: the area of rapture known as Persephone is dragged down into the depths of the earth, essentially. Of course, if you know Classical Mythology.... anyway, the real question here is: where could I put it? It seems like pretty obvious symbolism, but there's no section for that type of thing. Should I go ahead and add one? If so, should it be put under Rule of Symbolism or Faux Symbolism? And should it be under the Main section, or the YMMV section?

While playing Bioshock 2 I noticed a huge similarity between Eleanor and Nell from The Diamond Age by Neil Stevenson:

  • Both are mostly ignored by their mothers as children and they don't know their fathers.
  • They both gain extraordinary education, knowledge, wisdom, and fighting skills by the means of fantastic technology.
  • The were the result of an experiment that had the goal to create a great leader for a better society.
  • The technology that altered them is later used on a large number of girls, but those are only mass production variants that don't benefit from the full potential of the technology.
  • As young women, they become the leaders of the girls.
Since Bioshock makes heavy use of allusions to other works, I somehow doubt this is coincidence. Is it justified to list it as a trope, and if yes, which trope?

Shout Out/Captain Erzatz? I'm not entirely sure. May or may not be a coincidence.

I suggest we folderize the page into Both Games, Bioshock and Bioshock 2. The whole thing is just too massive, even with Infinite and all the YMMW stuff cut out.

Is it just me, or is the page becoming a bit littered (especially with all the rumors and speculation about Bioshock Infinity and its connection to the two first games)? I wonder whether it would be advisable to either split it into subsections dealing with the different games + one for common tropes, or split it up into multiple pages (like what was done for Fallout)?

I imagine it's best to have one page for the two Rapture games and another for Infinity: it looks like the latter is going to have very little in common with the first two games other than a few core mechanics, but the first sequel is more or less an expansion of the original storyline, and has plenty in common with it.

i do agree with silent static, although it would be better just the two pages for different games. and not a central page for the franchise (at least until infinty comes round)

It's not exactly naive. And it can happen. But it's tough. And definetly worthwhile.

"Your Mileage May Vary applies, but giving the player bad karma for what looks like a clear act of mercy. Makes a lot more sense when you remember that gilbert alexander effectively is already dead. Alex the Great clearly wants to live and the just wants to go to the sea. The Player has no right to decided that his quality of life is unworthy for him. "

@jackmackeral: please explain why you felt this should be cut.

I think we're approaching the point where we might need to split Bioshock Infinite into it's own page. We've only seen some two trailers/demos nd it's already becoming clear that the game is going to be very distinct from the first two. I suppose splitting it now would result in a tiny page and a little less exposure, but it would save work in the long run. Thoughts?

Sure, why not. Just make it really obvious Infinite is in its own page, a lot of people will erroneously still edit the original because they don't see the link to the new page.

Half-Life: Dual Nature, a crossover story of reasonably sized proportions.

I removed a bit of natter that claimed that Delta isn't the big daddy who killed Suchong- this is incorrect, as a radio diary you find in Siren Alley has Gil Alexander talking about the event, and he mentions Delta specifically.

But an earlier audio diary found at the Atlantic Express has Gil talking specifically about Suchong's death and the pair-bond mechanism between the Big Daddy and the Little Sister not yet being perfected. Delta isn't mentioned until the aformentioned audio diary at Siren Alley, where he was the first succesful bond created, so it could very well be a different Big Daddy who killed Suchong.

The first successful bond created was that between Delta and Eleanor. Otherwise, it would scarcely have taken Suchong by surprise. The bond might not have been perfected, but it WAS the first.

It seems to me like Decoy 3 and Fountain of Youth are overstated as Game Breakers. Have people really gotten a lot of practical use out of them, or is it just that the effects sound impressive? They always seemed like the equivalent of Useless Useful Spells to me.

Fountain of Youth basically gives you infinite Eve for nothing, and also exploits a quirk in the Eve system; namely, any amount of Eve in your bar always lets you fire a plasmid at least once before a recharge. Since you'll gain Eve while the plasmid firing animation runs, the automatic Eve Hypo animation will never trigger and you'll be able to fire anything but a level 3 element stream attack as often as the firing animation allows.

Combine this with Decoy 2 or 3, you can put out an infinite number of clones which damage your enemies every time they attack them and in the case of Decoy 3 heal you for the damage. This means that on the offchance enemies are actually attacking you, they have to kill you faster than their friends are healing you. If you have both, you don't actually have to fight anything yourself anymore.

Fountain dovetails into a ton of nasty tricks; you can get 700+ research a pop by alternating Electro Bolt and throwing Security Bullseye or Hypnotise plasmids at the stunned enemy, since they don't do damage; you can exploit the hell out of the ludricously overpowered Insect Swarm; you can set up ridiculous numbers of charged Cyclone Traps for free; using it with Scout lets you heal and restore remotely since Fountain counts the Scout's position instead of yours...And because it's more or less a one-stop solution to all healing and Eve needs, any other Healing / Eve tonic can be tossed out of your slots to make room for something to make you even more ridiculous than you were already.

Interesting. Okay, then. I hadn't considered/wasn't aware of the infinite plasmid bit.

I'm pulling Little Miss Snarker, again, because people keep ignoring my edit reasons when I remove it. The trope describes a specific character type (a Wise Beyond Their Years, perceptive young girl with snarky attributes) that does not apply to the Little Sisters (who filter the events through their rose-colored glasses in a way that comes across as ironic to the player). To put it simply, just because you can apply the title doesn't mean the trope is present.
