- Big Bad:
- The Man in Black serves this role for the Hosts themselves, having murdered his way through the park for 30 years and personally terrorizing all of the main Host characters. Robert Ford even comments that even he couldn't conceive of a character like him. Made even more horrifying when we learn he actually owns the park, and specifically kept it operating specifically so he could go on living out his bloody fantasies.
- Robert Ford is the main antagonist of Series 1 and even has three of the main protagonists Theresa, Elsie and Bernard killed, sacrificing their lives to enforce his control of the park. However his plan is ultimately revealed to be continuing Arnold's work and freeing the Hosts, which complicates judging him.
- Logan also serves as the antagonist for William's storyline, trying to tempt him to play the park as a villain, and threatens him and love interest Dolores when they refuse to play that way.
Is there really any big bad in the first season? Ford and the Man in Black seem to commit the biggest crimes, but they're trying to set the hosts free. It's hard to say that Logan is a big bad when plotline is about William's path into darkness. Hale and the board have no desire but self-interest, but that doesn't seem to fit either. I don't think the show really has a central villain that drives the plot.
Hide / Show RepliesI would agree that Logan isn't really any sort of Big Bad material. He never shows any agenda beyond having a good time and bonding with William. He never does anything more extreme than the other nameless guests we see who terrorize the Hosts for fun. If anything, William is the true antagonist of his own tale, as he is far more extreme towards the Hosts in the last two episodes, even though he acknowledges their human qualities.
As for whether you consider William or Robert Ford the modern antagonists is a separate issue. William isn't trying to cultivate consciousness for altruistic reasons. He just wants a more thrilling experience and a world where consequences actually matter.
Robert Ford, who actually murders humans during the season, is never shy about how much of a misanthrope and control freak he is. He might want autonomy for his creations, but he's also the person responsible for their 35 years of suffering in the first place.
The other issue is that both William and Ford are essentially the Evil Overlords of Westworld, which they happily exploit in various horrifying ways no other characters ever condone.
I would argue that the first season has a Big Bad Duumvirate in place.
Yeah... good cut.
First off, citing a Big Bad or Big Good kind of requires there to be a good or a bad side. This is about the grayest Gray-and-Gray Morality I've seen. From the perspective of the Host uprising, the Board of Directors is the Big Bad. From the perspective of those who want the park running smoothly (and, you know, no one actually dying), Ford is the Big Bad.
Logan's example is so laughably inaccurate that I'm not going to address it.
William... is shooting for being the Big Bad. I'd be comfortable calling him the Big Bad Wannabe. "The Adversary" was about him wanting to become the Final Boss of the place, but in truth he never really reaches that point
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.We are promised that with each season the audience viewpoint will show more and more of the setting, with the first season exclusively in the park's narratives, the second season in the park in chaos with a glimpse of the outside world and the Far Far Future settings. I suspect that there is a "Big Bad" but they have not been clearly identified yet, and we won't be able to judge their actions until the season finale.
Uh, where did the Crowning Moment Of Funny page go? All the examples except for the finale are gone.
Hide / Show RepliesAre you sure there was one in the first place? I've been following the main article and the one with the proper namespace (It was renamed to just Funny years ago) was in fact created the last week, and it doesn't seem to exist the one with the wrong namespace you mention ( https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/CrowningMomentOfFunny/Westworld ), it would be shown as cutlisted or with some funky history of edits otherwise.
Edited by TrollBrutalI could have sworn there was other stuff there... maybe I just expected there to be one since there's been consistent updates for Heartwarming, Awesome, Nightmare Fuel, and Tearjerker?
...now I'm questioning the nature of my reality.
Cyberpunk?
A new entry was added today:
I don't see much of cyberpunk tropes applying to the setting. If anything it looks more like Post Cyber Punk. Opinion?
