The very fact he exists is a twist itself. It's built up that the normal Marik is going to be the ultimate Big Bad for Battle City when, during the finals, this psychotic split personality comes to surface. He is only foreshadowed during Rishid's duel with Jonouchi and nothing other than that.
Why exactly is Dark Marik not a spoiler? We don't know he exists until he comes out of nowhere with not too much foreshadowing. Maybe the abridged series has something to do with it, or maybe it's just It Was His Sled. But just tell me why.
