Is suspect there is some degree of Fan Myopia here in terms of Japanese franchises outside of Japan. Well, either that, or it's relative. Aside from Dragon Ball, Pokémon, Sailor Moon, Naruto, and arguably Beyblade, I haven't really seen any anime actually hit mainstream awareness. Some have gotten very close, like Attack on Titan and My Hero Academia, but they are still thoroughly either a "geek" thing or a "young people" thing from my experiences, and people outside their target demographics are unlikely to recognize any characters or know the name of these franchises.
I'm seeing, for instance, Hunterx Hunter, My Hero Academia, and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure all classified as Stage 5, but there is no way they are nearly as popular or referenced in other media outside of Japan as The Beatles or Star Wars. You can have a character say, "We're bigger than Jesus!" and expect the majority of your audience to know where that's from. On the other hand, to most people, "How many loaves of bread have I eaten?" without proper context would be complete gibberish.

Edited by huyfrostDoes anybody remember the Fandom Life Cycle of Digimon before Digimon Adventure tri.?
Edited by E.T.G.Yes, but it's usually all the way back to stages 1 and 2, corresponding to "Oblivion" and "Cooldown", respectively. The line between going down a stage and going down all the way is blurry, anyway.
Shouldn't "pre-release hype" go first, no second?

I'm curious about the stage level of Korean Dramas in the world. In my country (Philippines) it feels like it's teetering between Stage 4-5 while I don't feel like the Anglosphere (other than stuff like Squid Game) has shown some interest in it.
