Actually, we go for "offcial English release". Assuming that there is an official translation.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman...Somehow I forgot to put the relevant information in there. There is an official translation in Dynasty Warriors: Gundam and they use Loran. (Which is where the Ple/Puru dispute below comes from.)
Except, it's not official to Sunrise and Bandai. Artbooks and official site says "Rolan Cehack". Please, don't disregard those.
Just so we have reference,
Official Website says: http://www.turn-a-gundam.net/character/01.html
Slips from Official Artbooks says: http://g.e-hentai.org/s/0740ff9817/293903-27 (Be alert about the NSFW ads)

The name is written in English letters that do not need translation. They all say "Rolan Cehack".
Given that the Ask The Tropers thread seem to be agreeing that "Loran" is the preferred spelling, with our friend Sinxxx here being the only one arguing for "Rolan", does anyone object to reverting the spellings to "Loran" on the Turn A pages?
The matter appears to be settled, but I do not wish to Edit War.
^^ Those aren't translated, though. That's just Gratuitous English. It reminds me of Hellsing where the mangaka wrote out ARACADO or something on a splash page. Doesn't mean we go with that over the obviously intended Alucard.
Anyway, revert away. We go with the official English translation, which is Loran.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.I want to ask about RolanxDiana being an official couple. I watched the series, and I have doubts on the legitimacy of that. The show itself never really confirmed anything. It didn't help that Rolan kisses Sochie at the end, and the ring Diana is wearing in the epilogue is implied to be from her dead fiance from what I heard. Is there a source or supplementary material that expressly list them as that?
Edited by tropesWontChangeMeI'm questioning the decision to convert from Loran to Rolan, mostly because "Loran" has been standard among the fandom since the show came out and continues to be the most used ("Loran Cehack" produces 10 times as many results on Google as "Rolan Cehack" if you use quotation marks). Also, while Rolan is used in official Japanese documents for the show, the only officially translated material involving him (the Dynasty Warriors Gundam games) use Loran. Loran also makes more sense with Gwen/Guin's giving him the nickname "Laura," and, to my ear anyway, an English speaker approaching the name "Loran" more closely approximates the Japanese than "Rolan" which tends to end up with the second syllable pronounced like "an" instead of "on." (Well that's part of it—it's not easy to articulate but it's a pretty marked difference).
I'm planning to change it back momentarily but I thought I'd open the topic up here so we don't just change it back and forth, in case there's any contention.
Hide / Show RepliesBut that's the thing. "Loran" is a fan translated name that have prevailed for a long time. But that is not the proper name. "Dynasty Warriors" name is also questionable. They also gave Ple the name "Puru" and the Bandai has proven them wrong. And Japanese don't have distinction between L and R, the pun goes by Japanese pronounciation.
I took the name thing to Ask The Tropers, and according to precedent over there, they say it should be Loran Cehack. One, it's customary to go with the most common fan translation in unlocalized works (and Gundam Wiki is the only other place that uses Rolan; even The Other Wiki uses Loran... right now). Two, if there is a localization, that name is the one TV Tropes will use. It might not always be right (as with Ple/Puru), but unless they translate the artbooks or localize the series proper, it's the only official translation we've got.
