Find a Trope:
openNo in scene edits Film
Is there a trope where a movie doesn't have any in scene edits, cuts etc? Usually due to being a really cheap and/or bad movie but some art house movies do it on purpose.
openImpactful line trope Film
Character A and B are talking, character B tells character A one really impactful/truthful phrase that shocks them. Character A stares at character B slightly shocked and confused and just stands there watching character B walk away without saying anything else, leaving character A thoughtful and alone. What’s the trope?
Edited by carollsopenFutile Attempt Film
When some kid throws a rock or shoots a slingshot against some op monster/villain and it just bounces off his face and the kid is like oh crap what have I done.
openInnocent turned creepy Film
Something presented as innocent and harmless but quickly turns creepy. Think of things like Local 58, Don't Hug Me I'm Scared, stuff like that.
openCharacter believes they're chosen, but it turns out to be their friend Film
A character believes he's The Chosen One and prepares accordingly. However, it turns out that his friend or companion is actually the one who's chosen, creating drama.
openinternal dialogue Film
Hi, I'm looking for examples of internal dialogue in film to see the style of language used and how it is made visual /audible. Thanks!
Edited by HelenHorganopenSympathetic background elements? Film
Say, do you know if we have a trope for this? Basically, when problems in the main characters' lives seem to coincide with those of the world around them. A striking example I can think of is in Mary Poppins, the scene where Mr. Banks goes off to be fired, and as he heads to the bank he passes the cathedral and sees to his utter horror, as the background music reaches a gutwrenching crescendo, that the Little Old Bird Lady that's always there is gone - I've even heard some very well argued speculation that the implication is supposed to be that she's died.
The Beatles musical Across the Universe does this too, with the film's big Third-Act Misunderstanding occurring on the same day as the murder of Martin Luther King.
I know I've seen it elsewhere too.
openTrope of the character who can find everything Film
Y'know, like "Caretaker" in "The Longest Yard", the one who can find whatever you need the most in certain situations. The one who has a ton of contacts who can help him get stuff.
openWhen a person moves and they have copies behind them Film
What’s the trope for when a character moves and there are images of them that closely follow behind. I’m not talking about afterimage because it happens when they slowly move like walking or waving their hand. If for example they walk in a straight line, we see multiple images of them behind that continue to follow the path until they reach the person. The best example I can think of off the top of my head is in the movies Limitless and Lucy. It seems to happen when the character reaches a higher plane of consciousness and/or existence
openNeed Help Identifying a Trope Film
Character A senses Character B behind them. They turn and find nothing. When they turn back they are now face to face with Character B.
Not quite offscreen teleportation since Character B was never behind them.
openThe Circle of Parody Film
The Circle of Life from TheLionKing is referenced in other media.
openWork ends with a statistic to reinforce the message Film
Do we have a specific trope where a work with An Aesop ends (or maybe begins) with some factual text meant to really drive home the message? For example, a work about a person dying from cancer ends with a statistic about how many people die each year from that form of cancer.
Edited by SingingRainopenThe former huge threat dies real early on in a sequel Film
T He best way to describe this is through examples. About half an hour in to Return of the Jedi, the heroes relatively easily kill Boba Fett and Jabba the Hutt. About 10 minutes in to Return of the King in uncut scenes, Sauraman is killed off. About 10 minutes in to Civil War, Crossbones kills himself off. 10 minutes in to Revenge of the Sith, anakin chops off the head of Dooku, the guy who could match Yoda in the last movie. In Battle of the 5 armies, it takes about 10 minutes to kill Smaug. And if you look at it from T Hanos's perspective, about 10 minutes in to the movie, he manages to snap the neck of Loki, a character who has been a cause of great failure to him.
The heroes manage to easily kill a major villain from the last movie relatively easily, and get on with dealing with the REAL problem. Is there a trope for that?
openBlack and white is more dramatic? Film
Is there a trope for how black and white photos/live action footage looks more dramatic than color somehow?
openActor-Role Reference Film
I'm watching this film called "a perfect getaway", it noticeably stars a pre thor Chris Hemsworth, and theres a reference to iron man/avengers in this
First thor movie wasnt made until 2011 and a perfect getaway was released in 2009
There has to be SOME sort of correlation trope right?
openMissing button identifies the murderer Film
A dead body is found to be holding a button torn from his murderer. The protagonist finds this button and there's a dramatic moment where she identifies the murderer because he's missing a button.
openThe spy-er is being spied upon Film
Alice is spying on Bob. Maybe she's looking through binoculars, maybe she's across the street, whatever. The point is, she thinks Bob has no idea that anyone is looking at him. Then he turns and locks eyes with her. Alice jumps in shock and hides, embarrassed. I just saw this in the 2018 Little Women movie, but there are other examples.
Anyone got an idea of what the trope for a brooding antihero with mommy issues would be? Or just the brooding antihero with a troubled past?
