Im womdering could we create a Breaking Out Of The Ghetto trope to catalogue that (Perhaps with minority ghetto also there). We seem to have a decent number of aversions to make it its own thing.

I'm thinking about it the other way around. If there's no middle ground between a straight example and an aversion (either it's in the ghetto or it isn't), and we have nearly as many aversions as straight examples, that makes me think that it's not actually a meaningful or noteworthy Audience Reaction.

There's nothing meaningful or interesting about saying, "Some shows aimed primarily at girls appeal only to girls, and some have broader appeal." That's a tautology, a circular statement, like saying, "Some apples are red, and some aren't." Okay... so?

Seconded on creating a separate Breaking Out of the Ghetto page.

There is an idea that certain genres or demographics are "lesser", like shows aimed at girls, or SF and Fantasy shows. But I think it's more of a "Studio head reaction" than an Audience Reaction.

All the Ghetto pages have Aversion sections, so they should all be deleted?

^ Can't they all be moved to Breaking Out Of The Ghetto? Breaking Out Of The Ghetto could have a folder for each Ghetto breaker.

Not really, that would be less "breaking out of the ghetto" and more "destroying the ghetto."

The genre hasn't turned, there's just an exception to it.

It's both. Studios typically show less care or respect for shows targeted towards particular demographics, such as hiring writers who don't really understand the topics, giving the show less of a production and marketing budget, or allowing personal biases to seep into it. This often causes audiences to see these types of shows as inferior, which in turn "confirms" the studio's belief that these types of shows aren't worthwhile.

I made a thread about this in Trope Talk a few weeks ago but it hasn't gotten any replies. Should the "breaking out" examples be kept?

Maybe you could go to a tlp and try making "breaking out" a ymmv item on its own.

Keep them unless "Breaking Out of the Ghetto" gets launched.

Breaking out of the ghetto seems like a legit YMMV / Audience Reaction. You guys could take it to TLP.

To my mind the strangest, and most self-defeating, of these tropes with listed aversions is Couple Bomb. The description straight up says that exceptions are rare, yet the aversion list takes up more than half the page.

I suspect what it should say is that marketing a film on a celebrity lead couple doesn't work well. The aversions tend to be less advertised couples that audiences don't notice, so the perception skews towards the high-profile bombs.

Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.

I moved the examples from Girl-Show Ghetto. There's just the other pages now. Should a short-term cleanup thread be made?
