Is there any criterion for any YMMV trope? If there were criteria that one could use to judge if someting were an example, it wouldn't be YMMV. (I do agree that this particular example is pretty dumb.)

Some YMMV examples do have certain criteria due to misuse, like Broken Base requiring 6 months of a sustained, vicious conflict within a fandom, with two or more clearly-defined sides among other parameters.

While not as rigidly-defined as with Broken Base, I think the criteria for Internet Backdraft is (or should be) that it's a vicious backlash, with a lot of people really angry. I've seen people use IB in cases where it seems too mild of an issue to qualify.

In the case of this example, it merely seems to be saying, "the fans didn't like this," which I feel is misuse of the trope.

Remove the entry. For it to be an actual example it needs to describe an aggressive reaction, not merely "a sour taste". Classic Square Peg Round Trope.

By the by, I'd be careful with " I looked around and couldn't find any backlash, significant or otherwise." as a removal rationale though, Google searches and the like are not all encompassing.
