Hello! My name's Ian.
I've been a regular contributor to TV Tropes since 2011 (originally I went by a different name on here). Story writing, drawing, and blogging are my three main creative hobbies. Writing especially; it's my dream to eventually have my novels published. By contrast, drawing is a much more recent hobby of mine and something I'm much less experienced with. I've had a casual interest in drawing for a long time, as far back as elementary school, but it was often a "backburner hobby" in favour of other things. As of lately, however, I've been making a sincere effort to become a better artist, and I make sure to draw now multiple times per week.
Aside from those, I'm a big movie and TV enthusiast. I like lots of genres, but I'm especially partial to action, thriller, mystery, fantasy, and sci-fi.
I also love to go out for long walks. Sometimes they can be very long. There's even been times when I've gone out for 20km or more. I love to explore new places in general. I live in a fairly big city that's situated on top of a large coulee range, so there's tons of great places to walk. At this point, there's very few areas of the city that I haven't been to at some point or another. I've also been making it a habit to do weight workouts. Since my legs get lots of exercise from all the walking I do, but I figured my arms could use more exercise as well.
In the meantime you can find me here, saving the world one trope at a time. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about anything, of if you just want to chat.
- Star Wars: Pretty much all the movies and TV shows. :-)
- Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts
- The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings
- Super Mario and Wario Land
- James Bond
- Mission: Impossible
- Hercule Poirot
- Benoit Blanc Mysteries
- The Brokenwood Mysteries
- Digimon
- Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, and Mr. Holmes
- Terminator
- The X-Files
- Lost
- The Land Before Time
- Watership Down
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and its sequels
- Sonic the Hedgehog: Largely the classic games
- Superheroes in general
And plenty of others still, but those are my biggest ones.
- An Ember in the Wind
- Strange Events on the Eastern Islands
- In the Life of an Imaginative Canuck
- Strokes of the Paintbrush
- An Ember in the Wind II: The Amethyst Necklace
- All Just a Dream: Probably goes without saying. But if it turns out that the story I invested my time in was just someone's wacky dream, chances are that I'm not going to be too thrilled.
- Ambiguous Ending: Ambiguity within a story is fine, as long as it's handled well. Even having an occasional unanswered question still left over by the end doesn't really bother me (usually). But as for the ending itself, I like to have a clear picture of how things went down.
- Breaking the Fourth Wall: I generally don't like having anything within a story that reminds me that it's just a story, as it tends to hurt my immersion. I'm fine with Leaning on the Fourth Wall though.
- Four-Fingered Hands: It just annoys me to look at.
- Laugh Track: And this just annoys me to listen to, unless it's being done as a deliberate parody.
- Sudden Sequel Death Syndrome (possibly overlapping with Back for the Dead): I don't mind a character simply dying in a sequel, but it is irritating when it happens within the first 10 or 15 minutes. If a character is going to die in a sequel, at least use them before you kill them.
