Entries should only be commented out if they lack context and the troper isn't familiar enough with the work. Also, edit reasons should suffice for any commented out/deleted entry.

The troper commented out many examples, which is probably why they wrote notes next to each one of them, instead of writing one broad edit reason. Or maybe they wanted others to see them and improve them?

I've already added the ZCE and Creator Page Guidelines note at the top of the page.

He/His/Him. No matter who you are, always Be Yourself.

They should have fixed the entries themselves, leaving these little notes all through the page is a mis-use of the % % markup. If they don't have the time, then they should come back later and fix.

This was nottheactualevents, and the edit in question was done in September of 2020, so plenty of time to fix themselves.

If these were personal notes, someone should inform them of the To-Do list.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

Perhaps I could fix up those entries if they don't get around to it? I'm familiar with Stray Kids and their music.

^^^ That's assuming they know the work though. A lot of people just clean up random pages.

leaving these little notes all through the page is a mis-use of the % % markup.
Please explain how I am misusing the comment markup to leave comments for the next editor familiar with the work. I often find myself cleaning examples of works that I am not familiar with. This means that while I may be familiar with the trope, I can't add context to the example. Therefore, I try to leave guiding questions and sentence starters designed to make it easier to identify what context must be added to the example.

One of their notes states "rephrase this to reflect current changes - find a fitting duo trope, probably", and with the numerous other edits, they seem to be very familiar.

"They should have fixed the entries themselves, leaving these little notes all through the page is a mis-use of the % % markup"

ONLY if they're one who added the entry themselves. Not everyone watch the same show, and more specific extra note about what's missing from the context can be helpful option.

"Also, edit reasons should suffice for any commented out/deleted entry."

Consider how many commented out entries last for years even on high-trafficed pages... not really. Not to mention that sometime a troublesome page would require over hundred entries commented-out at once.

@gjjones, Forgot about these guidelines, thanks for adding them.

@Psychedelicate, Please do. I'm not completely familiar with their music & mvs (just a casual listener), only them as a band.

So, like, is it ok or not ok to leave notes with the comment markup? I also wanna know for myself when I do cleanups in the future.

Cleanup notes to other editors are OK. Examples of cleanup notes in the trope list

%% Needs to describe the "slob" part, not just the "fat" part

%% ZCE, how do they contrast each other?

%% Examples Are Not Recent, entry shouldn't speculate, delete if it doesn't fit

This is only when the editor who's doing a cleanup isn't familiar with the media/work itself, right? I mean, if they are already familiar with it, why wouldn't they just fix it on the spot or make a to-do list to come back to it later if they are busy.

Well, unless they said so, how you know if they're familiar with it or not?

selkies Since: Jan, 2021

If they, themselves, add examples into the page but comment out others' examples that they feel need more improvement instead of just fixing them immediately?

ZCEs should always be commented out if no one wants to fix them right away.

^^ While it does implies that the troper is familiar with the work, it isn't surefire. There's possibility that they're just moving misplaced example or copying example from another page for crosswicking. It's also possible that while the troper is familiar with the work, they have no idea about the event of the ZCE (they may just can't remember or miss that episode, and sometime ZCE give no useful clue at all).

Alright, so, the conclusive answer to my original question is that I'm allowed to add little hidden notes next to commented-out examples under whatever circumstance, correct?

MichaelKatsuro Since: Apr, 2011

Yes, I'd say so. Nothing wrong in itself with asking for improvement.

Yeah, I leave commented notes by zero-context examples all the time.
