All things considered, I am voting for the Catfish. I played through UNL just to see it and I laughed my butt off once it came to that battle, mainly for Meilings reaction.

In a way going Meiling->Catfish-> Sakuya would work, since Meiling dreamt of the catfish Sakuya cooked.

You know, I really wonder what Godzilla did to Sakuya that injured her and yet didn't completely pulverize her body. That's remarkable precision for a 100-meter tall radioactive dinosaur, or maybe a narrow dodge on her part. As the only human, is she coming down with radiation sickness or something?

She could possibly timehax to slow down the spread of the poison.

Late to the Meiling party, huh. Already posted by someone else but...

All we would need to get an EX-Meiling is to have someone she cares about killed in front of her. There's a lack of short, bald people but that Godzilla picture should be just enough to do the trick.

Write-up:
The (presumed) man, the legend, the fish.

The Giant Catfish is a villainous avatar of Taisui Xingjun, a God of Calamity who sent assassins (disguised as familiar characters) to attack Meiling. His objective, as he claims, was to drain her of her power so that he could move the earth and return to this world once again. He also spoke quite strongly of his plans to cause various disasters to Gensokyo.

Will Meiling defeat him, thwart his evil plans, and save Gensokyo from this phantom menace once and for all?

And most importantly... does it really matter? It's all just a dream anyway.

Also, aww. I thought the Sakuya thing was fun! It would've been pretty silly if we had put her off until the very last moment... But if Scholastica is sad about it, that's no good. We can do her soon, if you want.

Wow. Really? This is a triumph of silliness over good judgement and rational thought. And I'm sorry about the Sakuya thing. It was funny to pretend not to know of a popular character rather than one of the underloved ones. Anyway.

Namazu may be the strongest character never to actually exist in Gensokyo. Even the fearless Meiling, Great Wall of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, fears him. Also, he's a guy. You can tell by his totally macho 'stache.

He's also remarkable because he is one of the few Touhou characters that causes an Incident for destruction's sake rather than boredom, silliness or whim.

He was stopped this time but next time he may appear in someone other than Meiling's story mode in which case we're all doomed. I mean, he can take on the form of Reimu, for Dragon's sake. Really, the only person who has a chance of stopping him other than Meiling would be... Yamame! Swims under the ground does he? I smell a sequel hook!

Namazu is too game breaky to use in silly doujins and the like so I don't have anything to share on that front. So I'll do a picdump this time.

• Originally ZUN planned for Namazu to be like other Touhou characters.

If we're discussing the Catfish, it'd do to also discuss Taisui Xingjun as we do so.

That being said, Hisoutensoku brings up an interesting point. In Meiling's ending, It says that may,be just maybe, Taisui Xingjun does exist. And that'd make for an interesting story, what with him(?) being the only openly evil thing in the series, aside from the Saigyou Ayakashi.

... you know, something I just realized. Both Cirno and Meiling's endings involved people preparing for a coming threat, albeit, imaginary ones. Considering this, I honestly won't be surprised if your prediction does turn out to be true especially if Gensokyo's border of disbelief kicks in and combines both urban legend and dream into reality.

This would even tie into SWR's hanging plot thread revolving around the double-edged nature of Tenshi's gift to Reimu if the Catfish does return, complete with all his world-shattering earthquake goodness.

I'd like that idea, and it would fulfill my idea that he is the one Tenshi was talking about. Of course, it is a common legend, so...

Anyway, I must say I love the names of his spell cards.

Cutscene: "Rawr I'll make the earth shake!"

1st spellcard: Catfish "See? The earth is shaking!"

I think it's a crying shame that he apparently decided to cut himself off halfway through UNL (for gods' sake, three story mode paths? He couldn't even come up with a story for the other new characters, not to mention how he scrapped his original plan of making a Lower-Deck Episode and dropped several of the planned characters in favor of the Moriya crew.

Still, the catfish was funny as hell.

It would have been kind of hard to come up with a story for Utsuho. Unless people kept intruding on the reactor site.

But yeah I agree with you. I want playable Wriggle!

Wel, remember Reimilia's story in SWR? She was able to have her entire story in basically one location,so why not Utsuho?

Besides, Utsuho didn't technically lose either of her fights in the other people's story modes; Cirno got scared and ran and Sanae tricked her with talkyness.

The catfish is interesting because it could all be part of a dream but it seems like Alice was the only character Meiling saw before the dream, and its hard to tell if Alice was messing with Meiling or if the Catfish really did exist.

I loved Utsuho's logic in Sanae's story.

Sanae: Wait! I'm a servant of Lady Kanako!
Utsuho: Who's Kanako again?
Sanae: Well, basically, I serve a higher power than you.
Utsuho: Ah? Wait... a servant isn't really that strong, is it? Well! Gotta beat that higher power's lowly servant!

Hmm, we already have Sanae, Suwako, and Cirno landing in the reactor. Had Nitori been in, she would have probably gone into the reactor as well. Just need one more person, and we would have enough for Okuu's story mode.
