So, did you guys heard this film got nominated for the best dramatic film at the Golden Globes even before release?

[up] It was screened early for critics, which I would imagine includes the Golden Globes' judges. For reference, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is also nominated, despite not being publicily released yet. That film also had limited early screenings.

I didn't hear about it, but... so?

Award famous for people being able to buy nominations nominates most expensive movie.

In other words, water is wet.

Not saying this means anything bad, I'm just saying this means absolutely nothing.

I heard the variable High Frame Rate in Avatar 2 made for an atrocious viewing experience… Has anyone here had issues with it?

The best moments to pee during Avatar: The Way of Water, ranked

Given the film's 3+ hour runtime, it might be advisable to consult this (mostly) spoiler-free guide.

And below is my favorite little nugget:

If you do end up missing some important scenes, however, director James Cameron insists that it doesn’t matter too much. Asked when audience members should go to the bathroom, Cameron told the Hollywood Reporter, “Any time they want. They can see the scene they missed when they come see it again.”

If the first film was "Dances with Smurfs" is this film "Dances with Snorks"?

Just came out of the theater with my dad. My god, what a spectacle.

The money spent on this thing fucking shows. You get lost in the world and completely forget 90% of what you are seeing aint real.

Really enjoyed the family dynamic, and I can't help but wonder what will happen to Spider in future installments.

Kiri is probably my fave of the kids.

One thing I like about the sequel is that the villain Quaritch is actually given more depth and character development than in the previous film.

In the first film, the villains were all stock and flat. Some may say it makes them more "realistic" because real life have these kinds of asshole but really, it just makes them cannon fodder and I don't even remember most of their names. At least Quaritch has the potential to become a great, memorable cinema villain after his resurrection as a Na'vi. He really shows that he can adapt to Na'vi ways and still be on the side of humans. Plus he has a genuine soft spot for his son.

Just came back from the film. Jake Sully joins the Water Tribe. Not that Water tribe Though it's odd the title could still be mistaken for an A:TLA film.

Thoughts in a folder as it contains lots of spoilers

Initial thoughts after just coming back: It's the first film only bigger, underwater, and far too long. That's not entirely fair but... yeah that's kind of the short version.

Jake starts a family has four kids, including an adopted daughter that's played by Sigoury Weaver and is the virgin birth of her Avatar. Earth comes back with a shitload of ships and really opens up shop. Meanwhile Quaritch and some of his redshirts had their minds backed up and uploaded into Avatar bodies. So you may be seeing an issue here; some really contrived means to keep all the original cast (except Trudy I now realise) onboard and bring them back.

Jake was leading a resistance but when Quaritch comes after him, he flees to the water tribes and his family learn their ways. Eventually Quaritch learns where he is, commanders a whaler ship. (the new unobtainiam is super-whale brain-fluid that makes I immortal, I am not kidding). And there's a big ass final battle.

In the end analysis, this film is far too long, and caters far too much to James Cameron's love of the underwater. And it really is far too long, the same plot beats repeat themselves a good few times, which is Jake's kids fuck things up, go where they shouldn't and get in trouble, or get captured by Quaritch or both.

There's a point where his daughter is captured and tied up again and lampshades it. And I was just thinking 'that doesn't help, don't lampshade it, write it better')

And having gone to all the trouble of resurrecting Quaritch they of course don't kill him again. So really the whole film is pretty much awash plotwise and just for sceptical. (There is also the ongoing mystery of the not-Grace daughter for the sequels as well as she seems super connected to Eywa)

But still watchable enough once it gets going but I'd really prefer a intermission or two.

"It clearly had an impact."

When people said a impact it means the narrative imprit throught memes(the DNA of the soul) discussion about the story and all that, kinda like how Vader is still use as redemption 20 years later, kinda like how Terminator is still hold today. that sort of stuff

I will said the issue is aside of the story being so borderline bland, is that James cameron want this to be his high franchise but I feel there isnt enough material around? I mean I know the park, the movies and a videogame but aside of that.....what else is there?

I watched the movie yesterday, and I agree with many of the critics, the movie is beautiful, and in some points, it really overwhelms you about the beauty of the backgrounds, and the story is quite sad at times, especially at the end.

The few things I didn't like is how the humans outside Quaritch are quite cartoon-level evil and petty in their motivations. I understand the humans in the setting are trying to survive by any means, but the thing they do in the film doesn't had any sense, outside making you hating them.

I came out of the film yesterday thinking it had duel problems:

A 'Too many characters' problem where they couldn't give enough screentime to each individual one so when one or two dies, you don't feel anything, because you never got a chance to learn about them or care about them. When Weaver's character died in the first film, you at least had enough screentime with her to get to like her and know her as a person so that death could land harder. Here, if someone dies, you're like: wow, you were in like 2 scenes? They needed to scale back the primary players in the film so that each had their due time to develop, otherwise, cut back on the 60+ mins of action spectacle so we could get that time with these characters.

The second issue is not leaning hard into character motivations and inner conflicts. Like, the Jake Sully at the start of this film is not the one we ended up with at the end of the first film. Why was he so scared that he had to run away from with his family and hide instead of standing and fighting like before? Yes, the simple answer is: he has family now and kids, he must protect them. But I'd wish they went deeper into his feelings and thoughts on the matter. As for the humans, they do briefly touch on that their planet is dying and Pandora is to be the new home of their species, but we needed to see more desparation and more of their side of the conflict so they are not as one-dimensional as before. They are now a species bent on survival no matter what the cost. That should have been the angle to play instead of cookie-cutter bad people.

But overall yeah, it was pretty good, but doesn't exactly compare to the first film. It felt more like a stepping stone or a 'setup' film than anything else. A waystation as we move on to movies 3, 4 and 5.

The part I liked the most didn't even have anything to do with the main conflict. It was just when the kids were being kids. I liked all their relationships and dealing with moving to a new village and just being dumb from time to time. Okay, most of the time, now that I think about it.

I have to imagine a lot of the swearing the kids did was words they learned from their dad. They certainly learned a certain one finger gesture from him.

Oh, another thing that was odd in the finale that irked me: Once the final battle raged on and the dude's arm got sliced off and Sully's eldest son got shot. It's like the rest of the water tribe just vanished and disappeared from the battle. We didn't even get a single 10-20 second scene of them letting us know where or why they just simply left the battle at the end there, leaving Jake and his family to basically die. Maybe a simple one-off moment where the tribal leader told Sully: "Our part in this battle is over, we avenged our whales. They're after your family, the rest is up to you. This is your fight now." Something like that would have made their strange disappearance more palatible.

So, what can I say, a whole 13 years I refused to watch this movie.....but then my family basically forced me to watch Part 2 with them. Or rather, they bought the tickets in advance (we are watching it on Sunday) without asking me first.

So hey, I finally decided to watch Part 1. It was quite good I guess, but I really think that this is a movie made for the big screen, because on the small screen, the effects just aren't THAT overwhelming.
