So yeah, I'm almost certain I didn't see a thread about it on the front page and figured I might as well make one myself. Now that I have, hoopidy joopidy! What a game! I mean, I haven't actually played it yet, but I loved the first one, and this one looks just plain swell. Thoughts?

Oh phooey! I knew this would turn out bad. Still, nobody has posted in that one in nearly a month. Can't I be forgiven for only skimming through the first few dozen topics?

Can't wait for it. I wanted to pre-order it and get the Terminus armor, but it's become obvious to me that I can't get it.

Let's count the Darker and Edgier versions of the party members.

  • Wrex —> Grunt
  • Liara —> Thane
  • Ashley —> Subject Zero

Nobody can beat Wrex.

I'll miss him.

I thought Liara —> Samara was more obvious, what with them both being Asari.

The other pre-order bonus is a gun that shoots black holes. So Yeah.

I don't like the seemingly Darker and Edgier teammates.

Your teamates in the first Mass Effect were likeable, these ones are all like "I ain't joining Shepard because I care about his cause. But because I love fighting!"

And yes, Wrex was the best team-mate. I managed to save him on my first playthrough thanks to me being a good Paragon.

You can get what you want and still not be very happy.

Seriously.

I'm sure each character will have optional backstory, but it's like they're trying to be too hard to be edgy.

Edit: It's not "like", they are trying to be too edgy. It isn't working.

I'm having my doubts for the reasons previously stated.

You wrote great characters the first time, Bio Ware, there's no reason to drop half of them and write new ones.

What would "drop" mean in this instance? Not having them in the party, or not having them in the game?

Uh, Dragon Age was supposed to be Darker and Edgier than previous games, like Baldurs Gate, but it turned out to have splendidly well-rounded (and -written) characters.

Remember what we say about trailers.

Anyway, half of the NPC squad-mates in ME 1 could die during the game, and two of the three remainders have been verified as being in ME 2 (and honestly? I don't mind if Liara doesn't make it in; her story was heavily tied to the plot of ME 1 and can end it there as a team-mate without reprecussion). Garrus and Tali both got short-shifted with the ME 1 plot (they were basically hired hands) and have more room for plot development.

Given what I've heard about the ME 2 plot, it seems like they're going all Empire Strikes Back with it. So darker works.

Apparently most of the 'dropped' characters are still making apperances, even if they're out of the party. So maybe 'dropped' isn't exactly the right word.

It's effectively the same thing, though. Not having them in the party means missing out on their input and reactions for various situations, which is probably what makes Bio Ware companions so great. Unless they get sent into the 'outside support character' slot (like Captain Anderson, for example) it's doubtful they'll make a big contribution to the story outside their one appearance, if at all.

(Wrex might be an exception, depending on what exactly Bio Ware has planned for the Krogan.)

Tali joins Shepard's team. She's not exactly Darker and Edgier, but more cynical and less optimistic. The fact she gets booted by her own people is the chief reason. Ah, growing up...

I must admit I'm one of the few who doesn't like Wrex. I find him to be a nerd's idea of what a badass sounds like. To me, he just seems insecure and overcompensating.

My team is usually Garrus and Tali. Garrus because he's the only one who seems to really act like an adult (Well, Kaidan does as well but CarthCarthCarth) and Tali is a Deadpan Snarker.

This said, I'd be disappointed if they tried to make the series Darker and Edgier. I'm playing through right now as a pretty much straight down the line Paragon and really enjoying it.

Hearing Miranda talk is a real mindfuck to me. I'm not used to hearing Australian accents in video games.

I still needs to play through ME 1, again, since I lost my old saves.

I'm looking forward to ME 2 though. As long as they've made the Mako Sequences less boring.

Yeah I haven't actually played through ME 1 yet, because I bought it at the Steam holiday sale.

I do not hate the Mako like Arilou does. I've controlled worse vehicles, far worse.

To me, he just seems insecure and overcompensating.

I like Wrex a lot (fave teammate apart from Garrus), but I have to admit I felt this way about him too. Though to me it came off as Bioware trying to deconstruct "tough, badass characters".  *

As long as they've made the Mako Sequences less boring.

They got rid of the Mako, and replaced it with a shuttle you don't get to drive that just drops you where you need to go. Yeah, that's going to go down well with the fanbase.

I hear tell Adam Baldwin is voicing someone?

Yes, he is. To my knowledge, he's voicing a male quarian called Kal'Reegar who helps defend Tali during her trial and seems to be little more than a cameo.

So is Michael Dorn, playing a minor character apparently.

Which makes me wonder: Why would you sign on Michael fucking Dorn to do some random guy when you've got a new Krogan character who's merits as a good character are in question by the fandom?

The solution is simple, Bio Ware!

I don't think it's Darker and Edgier it seem like all the info is form the renegade side of things, kinda like how Dragon Age ads were all about blood and gore but you can play a WARRIOR OF JUSTICE
