Umberto Eco wrote extensively on the features of ur-fascism, and on how contradictions and paradoxes get internalized into fascist believe systems. One example is the Aryan ideal mentioned above; another would be the depiction of Jews as both weak and inferior, yet also part of an all-powerful conspiracy posing immense danger to non-Jews.

I saw a comic that pointed out that the fascist explanation for the contradiction is that the Jews "cheated." Since Jews are weak and inferior, the fact that they are in charge is just more proof that they are morally inferior as well. It's begging the question and plenty of other logical fallacies.

You see something similar with immigrants, especially Mexicans. "They are lazy and stealing your jobs" is not intended as a contradiction, but as "they stole your jobs, and they don't deserve them because they don't do them right because they are lazy."

[up][up]It was only in jest.

[up]Right, that is the gist of a lot of racist rhetoric: the Other is weak and inferior, yet also an iminent threat, which justifies the (verbal or physical) violence that often follows such rhetoric.

You can have a variant of racism where the Other is not a direct threat, which usually involves peoples at a safe, very long distance from that culture, and generally leads to White Man's Burden missionary rhetoric.

You don;t usually see it the other way around, though, because the Other in a racist duality is inferior by definition. No culture ever declares ITSELF fully inferior to the Other. When it does happen, it usually leads to Noble Savage rhetoric, but even then, the Other is still a savage, noble qualities notwithstanding.

That could explain why House Elf culture feels so off to us, by the way. They are effectively Othering themselves, something no human would ever do.

I've gotten through the Order of the Phoenix audiobook. Someone apparently told Jim Dale after Prisoner of Azkaban that "Voldemort" is not pronounced in the French style, since the T has not been silent for the last two books.

I like the voice he did for Umbridge, but for Luna Lovegood he went with a low, throaty sort of voice that doesn't match my mental conception at all. Not sure how much that's been influenced by Evanna Lynch's portrayal; I only saw most of the films once each.

Bellatrix Lestrange has a French accent, probably because of her last name, but she married into it, so... maybe she spent time in France in her youth? Her sister Narcissa Malfoy's accent is vaguely German.

[up][up]Kinda but that part is coherent, racism out great emphasis on on violence and the hability to murder things, and some races are just better at it(read: theirs) which means they are better, the Jewish with their degenerate logic(read:peace) weaken the people.

Is not contradictory logic, is and awful one, is pretty much saying "you are all cheating because by logic I must always win!" That is why racist, facist and totalitarians like hard comunism are bad losers.

There was an update to the Harry Potter and the Nightmares of Futures Past fan fic a few months ago, but now the whole fic seems to have been deleted. Does anyone have a clue as to why?

That would probably be best moved to a Fan Fiction thread rather than here, since this is a place to discuss direct HP works, rather than fanfics.

Do you like Pokemon Go? There is a Harry Potter version now. And it's pretty awful. It is basically Pokemon with the Harry Potter world awkwardly painted over it. You rescue (instead of catch) Harry Potter characters and random magical trash, over and over again. It doesn't quite have the same magic of catching Pokemon, ironically enough.

Couldn't they just be lazier (but maybe more thematically appropriate) and just catch escaped magical beasts?

Anyways, I didn't realize Pokemon Go was still a thing.

How exactly does the Prefect system work? Do they select from the 5ths every year or do they only choose new people once the old Prefects/Heads graduate?

akanesarumara Since: Mar, 2012 Relationship Status: Abstaining

They chose from each new crop of 5th years. If I remember right the 7 years have prefects as well as the Head Boy and Girl (otherwise James would never have been able to be a Head Boy, since, you know, he never was a prefect in the first place - that was Lupin.)

Well, since prefects graduate every year, the answer is both. But yes, every House has six prefects at a time—one boy and one girl chosen in their fifth year, and continuing through sixth and seventh. Twenty-four total.

(Edit: Oh, and Quidditch captains have the status and privileges of prefects, but their responsibilities are limited to their teams. Probably nothing stopping someone from holding both offices, though. They are replaced as they graduate, and can probably be anyone from fifth year up—we first see Wood as a fifth year, Angelina replaces him in her seventh after Quidditch takes a year off in Goblet of Fire, and Harry takes over from her in his sixth.)

I always assumed the Head Boy and Girl were chosen from the seventh-year prefects, but you're right, that doesn't seem to be necessarily the case. Edit: Maybe they can be chosen from prefects or captains, and James was the latter.

Ooooh right, that makes perfect sense that James was not just randomly chosen but was in the running because he was captain! I forgot about that. BTW James I was a little confused, is he chaser or seeker? Harry says he seems more the chaser build but he nicked a snitch and played with that (tho prolly cos stealing a quaffle the size of a watermelon or football would have been harder than a snitch the size of a walnut), and before book five I always thought James was seeker too like Harry despite I think nobody expressly saying he was seeker, only that he loved quidditch and was good at it.

Abridged idea on what if Diary Riddle got a body of his own(and also regular Voldemort)

  • Diary Riddle: These past two years have been pretty great
  • Modern Voldemort: At last, I've returned to-what the hell is this
  • Diary Riddle: I figured you'd show up.
  • Modern Voldemort: No really, what the Hell is this?
  • Diary Riddle: I'm the first part of your/our soul we excised. Got out of the diary. Now I'm going to finish where you started off, with a new slate and a much more charismatic form
  • Modern Voldemort: I won't tolerate this! I'm the only one supposed to be in charge, not you! You're 50 years inexperienced you punk!
  • Diary Riddle: You've gone senile and look like a freak old man!
  • Both Riddles: Avada Kedava!
  • Both Riddles: Become mutually existing spirits
  • Both Riddles: Well this is awkward

Yeah, Diary Riddle is a pretty big honking plot hole in the whole horcrux scheme. It made much more sense when he was just a diary ghost. But now all of a sudden there were almost TWO Voldemorts.
