Because they want to rebalance it. It doesn't fit the feel of the game for you to be an overpowered god killing Deathclaws from across the map.

They made something that, in retrospect, they believe is too powerful compared to the rest of the things in the game, so they're reducing its power.

Ratslayer is hilarious. Like they say, "The Last Thing You Never See" - PFFT silenced headshot. Ordinary bangers (Khans, Vipers, Fiends) usually fold after one shot. Weaker critters too.

So, New Vegas didn't win neither Best PC Game nor Best RPG at Spike VGAs. None of the side awards that usually go to the losers to make them feel less sad, either (they were nominated for only one anyway if I recall correctly).

In Best Biggest PC game it lost to SC2 - no real competition here, definitely. In Best RPG it lost out to Mass Effect 2. Now while ME 2 is an awesome game, I'm quite hard-pressed to call it an RPG, especially in comparison to ME 1 (which actually had an inventory, shitloads of unique items and party armor, not that I miss them much).

Well, if anyone cared about this, now ya know. Not that I did.

Well, on that note, does Fable III count as an RPG? I'm inclined to say "no" myself. I'm told earlier games in the series felt more like one, but this one feels like some weird gamish of a modern FPS style HUD stuck onto an action/adventure game.

In comparison, Fallout: New Vegas couldn't be anything but an RPG, with all that customization of your character from start to finish.

Eh, for me New Vegas was outright better than ME 2 I mean I really liked ME 2 but the dialogue felt really mechanical and bland tbh.

Also, New Vegas's plot and level of freedom was just amazing. Enough for me to justify deciding to roleplay as Tyler Durden (which is fun as hell by the way), that level of roleplay is just not possible with ME 2, hell in my opinion I don't think ME 2 really lets you roleplay at all given that it forces you to go all paragon or all renegade to get the best dialogue options right?

One thing I miss from Fallout3: the diversity of the various civilizations. You had Megaton, Oasis, Underworld, Little Lamplight, Tranquility Lane, and the Republic of Dave all in one game. Meanwhile, Primm, Novac, and Goodsprings aren't that different.

Wasn't that a complaint levelled at the game by NMA? That Fallout 3 was like a theme park with a mix of random post apocalyptic elements that couldn't realistically coexist so close together or something.

[up][up]Compared to the Strip, the Kings, Casear's Legion, the Great Khans, or the NCR? I'd say they're at least as diverse, and considering how stupid Little Lamplight and Oasis were, definitely much higher in quality.

^Add Jacobstown and Black Mountain. For Me Jacobstown just looks amazing.

Yeah, it was definitely more interesting imo.

^^ Well NV was meant to win back the fans right?

Why even bother bringing up the spike VG As? Nobody watches it for the freaking awards. They watch it for the exclusive trailer premiers. All of which where CGI this time with absolutely no gameplay footage. Bogus.

the VGA's are always fucked up. Red dead won in pretty much everything but best character. That's right, John Marston didn't win best character.

New Vegas felt more odd actually. What with space bound ghouls, a super mutant radio host, A gang of Elvis...

Yeah, but I consider Black Ops winning best character over Red Dead Redemption to be a pretty sorry decision.

I find all forms of gaming awards to be inherently flawed, because it all it takes is one idiot to screw up the decision making and give crap games awards they don't deserve.   [1]

[up] Honestly, I didn't really have one for this year. There wasn't really much that interested me this year, only about 3 games. If I had to, I'd say New Vegas, but that's really only because it was one of the only games I actually cared about.

I think New Vegas is definitely my favourite game of the year. Although, admittedly I haven't played RDR (is it on PC yet?)

RDR was amazing. I'll give you that. Marston felt like a human being, the side characters were interesting. The missions were fun and the game looked gorgeous. But it was up against mass effect 2. Which is currently sitting at my favorite game. Ever.

Mass Effect 2 is every bit the RPG that Mass Effect was... inventories do not a RPG make. They had, basically, the same sort of RP system, with the dialogue wheel allowing you to make important decisions for your character... actually ME 2 had interrupts, which actually gives you a little more wiggle room. It's a very good game, and might deserve best game of the year.

That said, it's not as good a RPG as New Vegas. FNV is nuts with the character options, mutable dialogue, and alternate endings, all of which I think are key to an excellent RPG.

OTOH, FNV is ridicilously buggy. (even by Obsidian standards).

I would say it doesn't have as many RPG elements as Fallout: New Vegas, not that it's not as good of an RPG. It's still an RPG and a quite good one, it just as less G and more RP to it.

Actually, inventories do the RPG make, RPG's are still games which run on gameplay mechanics which is what we also use to separate the genres, a FPS is different from a TPS because it has a different camera angle which drastically affects how you play a game, a gameplay mechanic.

Generally there are four mechanics an "RPG" has,

1) The ability to select at least one "slot" of armor and weapons

2) Numerical record keeping, things like levels, stats, XP and etc.

3) An alternate system of combat beyond the basic maneuvers.

4) Numbers which affect the stats "passively" such as buffs or bonuses from armor.

A hot dog is not a dog that is hot, and a "Role Playing Game" does not involve choice or story when speaking in the sense of a game, they're not gameplay mechanics because they do not affect gameplay they affect the world but if you took them out and replaced them with "Go here signs" then the gameplay wouldn't change, Mass Effect 2 is missing #3 while the Fallout series has all four, Fallout is an RPG not Mass Effect 2.

See, I always thought that an RPG had to have you making choices about how you wanted your character to carry on, having to make tough decisions and whatnot. You know, playing a role. But apparently there's also got to be a huge inventory. Thanks for the clarification there.

Also, by your logic, New Vegas is an FPS, as one of its gameplay mechanics is a shifted camera angle that dramatically affects how the game is played.
