This thread is for quick questions. A "quick question" is a question which has a relatively quick, generally factual answer; a question which is not likely to inspire an extended discussion.

e.g.

Quick Question: How tall is an average ten-year-old boy?
Not a Quick Question: Why are Americans obsessed with guns?

Quick Question: Why is ALS sometimes called Lou Gehrig's Disease? Who was Lou Gehrig?
Not a Quick Question: In Alan Dean Foster's Thranx Commonwealth series, is Pip a Mary Sue?

Get the idea?

The 12th amendment of the US Constitution states that if you're not qualified to serve as president (such as that two-term limit), then you are disqualified from vice presidency too.

Now, some scholars say that the 22nd amendment (which establishes the two-term limit for president) only applies to election, and not to being appointed vice president upon a vacancy. And if they can serve as vice president, logically they would be eligible to serve as president too. But office seekers don't want to chance getting into legal conflict over this.

Simply having been president does not prevent you from being vice president later. It would just be awkward, and as far as I know Gerald Ford is the only one that considered it.

Much classier for a former president to go on to become a Supreme Court Justice like Taft.

John Quincy Adams was elected to the House of Representatives after his presidency, and Andrew Johnson became a Senator after Congress failed to impeach him. Now that's awkward.

Taft wanted that job in the first place, so it's all good

This also ties into (potential) alternate history. In February 1861 there was a plot to assassinate Abraham Lincoln while he was president-elect. The 20th amendment, which among other things establishes that the vice president-elect is the successor of the president-elect dies, would not be established until 1932-3. If the plot was successful how would they have determined who was president?

Does anyone know where the structure of Red Eyes, Take Warning and Red Sky, Take Warning comes from? They sound like they're references to something.

It comes from a mariners' rhyme.

Well the origin to that is explained in Red Sky, Take Warning's description. The "Red skies at night, sailor's delight. Red skies at morning, sailor take warning" adage

What are the benefits of having a government job type like the post office?

I've seen government jobs variously regarded as either very cushy jobs (good pay and benefits, very stable, very decent conditions), stable and pleasant but low-paying, gold bricks (getting paid a fortune for next to nothing and nearly impossible to fire), or constantly under the threat of budget cuts and layoffs, and resultantly overworked. It pretty much depends on the job, the union, and the government in question, and what you enjoy doing.

Benefits specifically in the "nonmonetary compensation" sense, again depends on the situation, but there's usually some kind of health insurance and pension, unless the area politicians have decided such things are too budget-breaking and have managed to get those removed from new hires' contracts.

What does it mean when someone is sentenced to (as in the recent Cosby trial) three to ten years? Does it mean their sentence will be decided at a later date?

They might be released in more or less time depending on behavior in jail and whatever else the parole board decides, but they cannot serve less than three or more than eight years for that crime.

Could get more time for a different crime, though.

All criminal convictions are subject to parole unless the sentence specifically includes the phrase "without parole". As I understand, "three to ten" would typically mean that the convict becomes eligible for parole hearings upon serving three years. If parole is granted, one is still a convict and must obey the conditions that are assigned (such as not leaving the jurisdiction, not committing any further crimes, not using drugs, and/or having productive employment) until the full term of the original sentence is completed.

Question with Franklin D Roosevelt-did his paralytic illness make him impotent or not? There's evidence suggesting he still had an affair with Lucy Mercer and/or other women during his presidency, so I'm wondering if he was able to put anything physical into it or not

Is "transgenicist" a correct term to denote an advocate of creating transgenic organisms? If so, would "anti-transgenicist" be the logical term to denote an opponent of the same?

PS: I couldn't find any dictionary definitions of "transgenicist", and while the term does seem to be used online, none seem to offer any formal definition of it whatsoever. A lot seem to be non-scientific sites, actually.

Why is beer foamy? Is it a natural part of the fermentation process that produces alcohol? And if it is, than why are only some beers foamy? And why aren't other alcoholic beverages like wine foamy?

Beer is fermented with yeast, and CO 2 is a byproduct of yeast breaking down the sugars. I think wine is fermented with bacteria. I don't know why some wines are sparkling.

I know that if an election sees no-one get more than 50% of the electoral vote in a US Presidential election, it goes to the House of Representatives. What's the process they use to determine who's the winner? I ask because there's been some in history that could've turned out that way like the 1836(which was the intention of the Whigs), 1860(the Democrat split and John Bell) and 1892(The Populists) elections, and there has been at least one example in the 1824 election(Adams vs Jackson vs Crawford vs Clay)

I think if it goes to the House, they're pretty much allowed to vote for whoever they want. As I recall, thanks to some heavy lobbying, that broken election that was decided by the House was given to the candidate behind the two who tied.
