I think the reason is because Oda has to rush the story. He mentioned in that 80% finished/100 volumes total interview that he knows that he can't keep going on forever. He is getting older and his health worse. So he has to increase the pace, so that the story will actually be able to reach its conclusion. I think that's the reason for why quite a bit has been offscreened. I think Oda also mentioned that he has to skip some stuff and plot points.
If Oda doesn't take care One Piece may end up either like Bleach or Hunter X Hunter.
Sanji continues to be disgusting.
Ah, that also makes sense. That ties in various statements of his that add up to the second half being slightly shorter than the first.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."Of course, Sanji. Why would anyone expect something different from you?
And yeah, the whole Nami scene looked quite unnecessary.
... And that's called jazz!I think Oda has outright admitted he's getting pervier in his old age.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."I’m thinking maybe he should start seeing his wife more.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."The Nami cosplayer? She might be his inspiration
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."She wasn't a cosplayer; she played Nami in an official stage show. That's actually how they met. Nami's ever-increasing sexed-up-edness might very well be a sign of how much he loves her. Aww?
I believe that was Eww
A little from column A, a little from column B.
"I think my wife is so hot that I want to show her around in modest or no clothing."
... And that's called jazz!Get a feeling so complicated
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.Eh, close enough.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."When Hawkings turned up at the bath I knew we were going to get a Call-Back to Alabasta.
As an aside, we still don't know which island on the Grand Line Bell-mère found Nami and Nojiko on do we. Any bets it will be Wano?
It’s like having a really nice car, sometimes you want to show other people what they don’t have.
But yeah, when your project is 25 years old, meaning 1/4-1/3rd of the average life expectancy of a human being, mortality becomes a pressing concern. Unless you want to be Hajime no Ippo and keep going even after a complete wet fart of a twist put you in a corner, you have to get ready for the end.

We don't even know it was an island on the Grand Line.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."
Hmm. I thought it was at least implied but I could be wrong (its been ages since I read/watched East Blue). I thought it would make some narrative sense for it to be Wano as Nami was found around 20 years ago, about the same time Wano was closed off.
But also remember it's implied Bellemere went straight from wherever she was to Cocoyashi, and did so with just had a single little boat.
There's only so far someone could sail in those conditions with an infant and toddler who became deathly sick en route in tow and, even if the New World/Wano wasn't a Thing yet, it's close enough to Whisky Peak for oda to at least have the Grand Line's general conditions in mind.

Cool. I was misremembering then
That was funny actually.
One Strip! One Strip!I think these few special words perfectly encapsulates Oda.
“Every time I close my eyes, I wake up feeling so horny. I can’t get you out of my mind. I don’t give a damn about nothing else, freek’n you is all I need.”

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."That applies to a lot of Mangaka really.
One Strip! One Strip!Though the “I don’t give a damn” really fits him in this context.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."@slimcoder
Freekin You should be the new theme song for Nami, even though I kind of think that she is a virgin.
Am I the only one who thinks that chapters are getting more content than they used to in order that the anime gets more material per episode? I mean, don't misunderstand me, they were always pretty packed in terms of stuff happening, but I feel like at some point it crossed over into the manga's pacing suffering because of so much story jammed in.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."
