South Korea is hitting back at criticism for military drills at Dokdo/Takeshima:

From NHK World

South Korea's presidential office has hit back at the US for criticizing the country's recent military drills near the Takeshima Islands in the Sea of Japan. South Korea controls the islands. Japan claims them.

The refute came in the wake of critical comments from a US State Department spokesperson on Tuesday after the two-day regular exercises aimed at thwarting an attempt to land on the islands.

The spokesperson said "given the recent disagreements" between Seoul and Tokyo, "the timing, messaging and increased scale" of the drills "are not productive toward resolving ongoing issues."

An official at South Korea's presidential office said on Wednesday that the drills were regular and that the islands are in South Korean territory.

The official said other nations should not easily make comments about a country's actions aimed at protecting its sovereignty and security.

The US also recently criticized South Korea for deciding to end its intelligence-sharing pact with Japan.

Observers say Seoul faces difficulty in dealing with its ties with Washington while its relations with Tokyo deteriorate.

They're voicing concerns about the impact on cooperation between the three countries in tackling the issue of North Korea.

Task & Purpose clarifies the child born overseas situation:

Let's break this down.

  • If you are a U.S. citizen or a naturalized U.S. citizen who has met the residency requirements, your child will receive automatic birthright citizenship and can therefore transmit U.S. citizenship to your child.
  • If you are a U.S. citizen who adopts a child overseas, you must either apply for citizenship on their behalf or obtain an immigration visa for that child and bring them back to the U.S. At that point, upon entering the United States with an immigration visa, they will become a lawful permanent resident (LPR), and after physically and legally living with you — a U.S. citizen — inside the U.S., they too will become a citizen.
  • In the scenario that If you are not a U.S. citizen and are instead a green card holder who is overseas as a U.S. service member or government employee and you have a child with either another lawful permanent resident (LPR) or a foreign national, you must either wait until you naturalize and then apply for citizenship on their behalf or apply for them to have an immigration visa and bring them back to the United States.

There are US Servicemembers and Government workers overseas that are Green Card holders or who are naturalized citizens that this "change" would affect. Overseas adoption is common enough that the Armed Forces TV gives PSA's about it.

The only real change is that it bring the US State and Homeland Security regs in line.

Random writing question!

In my current (and first actually written and soon looking to be published) story, The Graveyard Girl, Dave is one of the main characters and MC's "best friend", and a former Army Ranger sergeant. Now, his background as a soldier is one of the big reveals of the story, with everybody speculating about his past until the very end where he fights off a whole bunch of Neo-Nazis.

Like with other reveals in my story, I added fair number of foreshadowings. Or at least, I tried to. The question is, do following characteristics work as a hint for his military background?

  • He doesn't like fireworks, pranks, and anything that involves surprises and sudden loud noises. In fact, he even has a very low tolerance for Jump Scare.

  • Whenever he is asked for time, he answers in military time before correcting himself.

  • He thinks eating/drinking and walking at the same time is inappropriate. Also, whenever he gets a phone call he stops at the spot until he hangs up.

  • Whenever he's outside or enters a new place, he scans the area. He even pulls off Sherlock Scan from time time.

  • When he stands out in the open, he prefers standing with either a wall or a tree against his back.

As someone with military background - even if it's laughably short compared most people here - I worry if these are a little bit too unsubtle and obvious.

In a less related note, he's very into wristwatches and his watch is Luminox (Atacama Field Automatic 1900, to be specific). Has anyone here actually seen American servicemen wearing that brand?

I would try adding in "has trouble not standing at parade rest", but that's often subject to a lot of jokes.

Patriot force halfway thru major modernization

FORT SILL, Okla. — The Army's Patriot Air Defense battalions are upgrading their fire-control computers, communications, radars and operator interfaces while adding more capable missiles in a refit that is scheduled to continue through 2021.

"Right now we're conducting the most significant Patriot modernization since the early 1990s," said Col. Mark A. Holler, commandant of the Air Defense Artillery School at Fort Sill.

About 25 years ago, units began receiving Patriot Advanced Capability 3 — or PAC-3 — missiles combined with an overhaul to command and control systems and related software.

Upgrading again, the PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement — or MSE missiles — fielded a few years ago brought extended range and more maneuverability due to a more powerful rocket motor and larger fins. However, radar limitations prevented utilizing PAC-3 MSE missiles to their full capability.

Now Patriot units are undergoing a system-wide upgrade, to include radar improvements that will enable them to use the full capability of the PAC-3 MSE missile.

CONFIG 3+/PDB 8

As a soldier, I saw part of this upgrade. The company that made the CRT's literally no longer exists (and the Germans bought up their stock!).

A move to more digital components saves almost a ton of weight between the ECS (fire control station) and the radar.

@The Wild - Heh, I thought about that too! [lol] I took it out though because he left the army in a very sour note (it wasn't a dishonorable discharge, though), and parade rest was one thing he really hated in the army and even when he was a NCO he didn't enforce it to lower enlisted men that hard. tongue

@Taira - Ooh, thanks for sharing that! My other story has a former Navy SEAL who left the Navy because he couldn't put up with the issues inside SEAL and it should be helpful. [lol]

Exactly the same thing. He created Seal Team 6, things got really unruly thanks to the culture he fostered, which ended with him leaving and the SEALs getting "professionalised". It didn't work, and one reason for it might be his legacy of unconventional behaviour being passed down.

Marcinko pioneered the idea that SEAL's were men behaving badly - a bunch of partying drunks with weapons.

The famous "modified grooming standards" - long hair and beards - later be got the scum of the SEAL teams to form both Six and later RED CELL.

The Navy forced him out but the men he put in the SEALs were still there.

There were a few others who brought the rot it . The 90's schlockfest that was Virus? It was written by a SEAL who served with Marcinko.

As terrorism came to the fore in the 90's, SOCOM loosened the reigns on the SEAL's and the Navy followed suit. They were a recruiting tool after all.

SEAL's went Hollywood and were encouraged to act like a Lower-Class Lout as the "war on Terror" progressed.

The problems were bubbling up in The '90s but with no adult supervision from the Navy or SOCOM, things got worse.

It took longer for the Green Berets to get that bad but it has been happening as Big Army looked the other way. Now that's biting the Army in the ass.

His attitude can be best understood by his own words, that unless you weren't behaving badly, you took "special out of special forces".
