The first part about being a conservative bigot is getting really good at denying reality. For a lot of them that thin cellophane sheet might as well be a iron wall.
But I feel like Magirevo has shown a lot of yuri fans how good we can actually have it so our standards are shifting.
Modern classifications shouldn't be applied retroactively, at least.
You'd get this weird bump where some truly weird things, in terms of writing, qualify (Strawberry Panic, Kannazuki no Miko, Kashimashi), then a lot of things not counting, and then suddenly we're getting yuri again.
And that's also ignoring the third category of 'things that would have unquestionably been yuri under that definition if the entire story had been adapted', like Bloom Into You. <_>
Avatar SourceThe sooner we all accept Bloom Into You is not getting more episodes the sooner we will all be at peace.
I already accepted that, I'm just pointing out that it's also a thing that happens. So, overly rigorous definitions and retroactive application makes for some really strange stuff.
Avatar SourceI HAVEN'T THOUGH. AGH.
The one exception to getting more of something I want more of has always been Symphogear, I'm resigned to unfinished things forever.
Avatar SourceReading through the YMMV.Yuri Kuma Arashi page one entry really bugs me. Under the Narm why is "shipping two prepubescent girls together" considered creepy when:
- A: There's no mention of explicit sexuality.
- B: In Real Life you can find tons of public displays of prepubescent heterosexual affection (kissing included) and it's not considered creepy.

Humankind is like a train. No matter how powerful the locomotive is, it can only travel as fast as its slowest car allows it to.This season has at least 3, maybe 4 yuri shows going:
- Gundam: The Witch From Mercury
- Birdie Wing
- Yuri is My Job
- Hiragaru Sky Pretty Cure (though this may be the most controversial opinion)
Precure refuses to let romance happen, straight or otherwise, post yes so I don't really expect whatever they're doing to amount to anything canon.
I absolutely cannot help but adore handsome 2D boysThe subtext is really strong in this season, with Sora basically admitting in Episode 6 she can't live without Mashiro

The subtext in Dokidoki was ridiculous, but it was still only subtext in the end.
Avatar SourceThere are characters who one party actually has a confirmed crush on the other and they get left on metaphorical read by the end of the story. This season is very different in a lot of ways so maybe they'll actually go through with it, but I'm not super holding my breath
I absolutely cannot help but adore handsome 2D boysYeah I doubt it'll happen but it has two things going for it. The first being that Soaring Sky is basically THE greatest example of Breaking Old Trends in that franchise as far as I'm familiar with. The other is that as has just been mentioned, yuri is popular now. We're surfing an awesome wave of the stuff. It's great.
In any case Sora and Mashiro are definitely going down as one of those implied couples, nothing stopping it now.
I think as long as Precure remains a show for five-year-olds we aren't going to get two girls kissing or going out because, as mentioned, they don't even let heterosexual pairings do that. But if you want to watch a show where two girls are very obviously in love Soaring Sky will keep you satisfied. We already got the "I want to stay with you forever" moment.
Currently staring at Gundam with extreme judginess.
Although Miorine being one of the best people for not making ridiculous misunderstandings helps.
Avatar SourceThe two leads of Maho Girl Precure do kiss in the manga.
Where there's life, there's hope. This recent ANN Answerman article on the apparent popularity of yuri series at the moment and it mentions the book By Your Side: The First 100 Years of Yuri Anime and Manga by Erica Friedman. Has anyone read it, and if so is it worth getting?
I vaguely recall that Erica Friedman has a pretty good reputation, but I can't say much more than that, sorry.
Edit: She's the founder of Yuricon and was the first publisher of yuri manga into English, so yeah, I would imagine she knows what she's talking about.

It's been fun.Just read Yoru to Umi, which someone had recommended to me. It’s about Aya, a peppy but not very social girl, who meets Tsukiko, a cold, lonely beauty. Aya only likes swimming alone, Tsukiko only likes watching her swim.
A simple premise, two loners who find a connection in the other that they can’t quite explain. It has a decent premise, a quiet, slightly melancholic atmosphere that I can dig and some interesting or amusing visual metaphors.
The only problem is that it’s boring as hell. It feels like the story never goes anywhere and the two girls’ relationship never really solidifies beyond "I like spending time with her, I guess". Even when they meet again in the epilogue, they’re basically still at square one.
I only recommend it if you like pure, undiluted slice-of-life. It’s barely even yuri, really, although that I don’t mind in itself.
I suppose that if the market is expanding to include more and varied types of pure fruit juice, we must also accept that there may, indeed, be a market for La Croix as well.
(I chose my metaphor without thinking about "fruit juice" but I stand by my choice.)
It's been fun.Ooh, a whole bunch of things that I'd been reading over time have wrapped up now, going to have to catch up on those. Vampeerz was an odd one, kind of kept going between dramatic and goofy. It had a pretty rare art style, too, and it worked out in the end. Pretty long, all things considered.
Pretty fun if you also want something where the focus isn't just 'here's a gay vampire'.
The Sheep Princess in Wolf's Clothing, too. And that's just pure fluff. Adorable, silly fluff. With animal ears.

Thanks. I'll have to add it to my to read list.
Oh, looks like Hino-san no Baka is going to be finishing soon too. Possibly the end of this week...
Avatar SourceI read that for awhile. Did that ever progress beyond sexual harassment?
Probably just to avoid alienating the usual lot. It's vanishingly unlikely that the writers would have any disagreement on this, given the number of times and ways that this relationship has been emphasised as vitally important.
Could it get away with being direct about it now? Maybe. But, I guess even by XV they had to keep to the market they'd appealed to back in 2012. No matter how fervently in denial this group has to be.
