[up][up] Wait... The guy is actually named Dia? It's not a Shout-Out or a Bat Family Crossover?

EDIT: On another note, this could open up a special event with Crybaby!Ash and NewMovie!Ash, presuming that the latter is a single character. And, of course, presuming that Gen2-4!Ash, Gen5-6!Ash, and Alola!Ash are all the same guy...

[up] With a name like "Dia", it seems like a DPPT reference.

It'd be nice if the next movie featured Miyamoto's portion from Birth of Mewtwo, but that's a pipe dream. I doubt the trio will even be relevant in it.

[up][up]The people behind the anime work on it year round for dirt pay and overly long hours and only occasionally get vacations and breaks.

They're probably taking time off to enjoy the holidays like most human beings.

I thought they regularly had two weeks hiatus during the Christmas and New Year holiday anyway. There's several other short random breaks per year.

That and it seems as much down to the irregular program schedules during that time than just the episode production, given the episodes are usually made months in advance.

So, I've been wondering about the powers of Legendary Pokemon:

Does anyone recall times when a Legendary Pokemon demonstrated an ability that didn't seem to directly connect to it's theme or type?

I mean, we had Tapu Kokos from two universes opening portals between said universes in 100 and 101, so now I'm trying to remember times when Legendary Pokemon did stuff that you wouldn't expect them to do.

Not a legendary per-say but I do remember when they had an Unown do wierd shit back in the Lavitar arc back towards the end of Johto that you would be forgiven if you hadn't played the games and thought that Unown was a legendary Pokémon.

I do lots of stuff. The real question is am I any good at that stuff.

Ah yes. Address Unoun. I recall that ep. They probably got the idea from Spell of the Unoun.

Then again, they might actually be capable of that in large numbers, it's just that the games have never gathered that many Unoun together...and you can only have 6 of them in you party at a time...if you'd even put in 6 Unoun.

Hard to believe we're entering the final year of SM already, this saga has give or take around 40 eps left. BW and XY ended around 142 episodes and we're up to SM 103 with next weeks Brock ep. I still remember the controversy when this saga started right after XY and the change of art style...that was way back in 2016 already, lol

The Pokemon anime is the one thing that makes me feel really old. Whenever I think about sagas of the anime as "recent" I realize I'm thinking about stuff from over a decade ago already. Even the DP series ended way back in 2010, over 8 years ago now.

I notice a lot of casual fans online who are watching Misty/Brock's SM cameos feel the same, saying, "Misty didn't leave that long ago." Yet it was actually 16 years ago, almost 20 years ago since she left the cast. [lol] One of the Japanese promos for these eps told kids "watch this ep with your parents" implying all the original fans are now around 30 years old some with their own kids already. cool

[up][up][up][up] Considering Gen 8 will most likely be out on November 22nd, if we assume no more skips in the schedule and the first episode of the new season launches that same week, there's 47 more episodes to go.

The first trailer for movie 22 will be out on New Year's Day.

Please respond to this—

I’ll be blunt and just come right to the point; I can not honestly say just how I view the Original series of Pokémon anymore. I mean I still like it and as a would-be author I have had some interesting ideas about what could have been done during it. However, I will not lie, I am starting to see just why some fans few the following sagas as better and that kind of bothers me to be perfectly honest

For one thing I like Misty and have long since joined the ranks of those who believe that she and Ash would make a good couple. But, after watching Ash’s exploits with May, Dawn and Serena, I cannot help but still believe that Misty could have been nicer to him, the original series gave misty way too many opportunities to cut Ash down and insult him and I don’t really believe that he deserved it. I had originally thought that Iris’ treatment of Ash was far too needlessly condescending and somewhat hypocritical as well, and that Misty wasn’t that bad, but now I am unfortunately starting to see the resemblance between the two and Iris’s character was not one that I was growing fond of, I kept wishing for someone or something to take her down a peg, she deserved it.

Anyways, back to the topic at hand; when I think about how admirable Ash is the Advanced, DP and XYZ sagas, I try to tell myself that he was more or less like that in the Johto saga as well, but his behavior in the first season still manages to come back to haunt me. He was insulted and accused of handling Pokémon badly and irresponsibly and that just felt like people were just being needlessly condescending towards him. Also, when I compare it to how well he’s handled Sceptile, Infernape, Krookadile, Greninja and Noivern, I just can’t help but feel bothered by the problems that Ash has had in terms of his Charizard, especially since I still can’t for the life of me understand why it started to disobey him in the first place; I mean isn’t this the same kid who protected him from the rain while keeping his tail flame lit, who always cheered him on and treated him like a real friend no matter what? So, what exactly happened in the short amount of time that it evolved that caused it to think that Ash was not worth listening to, especially when it only evolved under Ash’s care anyways?

Ash could be a bit of a brat in the original series, but there's little doubt he took a lot of flak he didn't always necessarily deserve.

That entire thing with Erika apparently still irks people.

Ash's personality is modified to whatever the writing style of the saga is and who his companions are. He was a rookie and rash in Kanto and Misty played off of that. In AG he was a bit more experienced but still short tempered so May and he could still have some bickering even though she looked up to him. Then in DP he and Dawn were treated like equals (despite Ash having 4 regions of experience on her), so they had sibling like interactions. In BW they went to the idiot/rookie side of him, in XY he was a shonen hero because Serena had a crush on him, in SM he's silly due to the tone of the series.

That being said the same happens to everyone else. Misty in SM is all girly and cheery, her temper is gone and she's nothing like her old self either. Ironically enough all those Misty fans from a decade ago who used to complain about girly female companions are now a bit hypocritical because Misty is portrayed like that too.

The thing was that the Kanto series was originally conceived on a much more cynical and mature premise, that the 'Pokemon trainer' occupation was a pipe dream and led to many people having fake occupations or growing up to be deadbeats. We still have remains of this concept in areas, most through Team Rocket (though even they diluted into more generic villains as things went on) but, likely for executive mandates, the premise was made more light hearted.

I think this is why earlier episodes have a much more mean spirited touch to them, because the whole cast were originally conceived as being hyper defensive about their accomplishments because this "dog eat dog" system equated you to a complete failure if they were diminished, but without so much emphasis on that aspect in the show itself, it feels like everyone is just antagonistic out of pettiness and we're still meant to take their side, likely why from the point of the Orange Islands series, things becomes Lighter and Softer, if a bit blandened down and formulaic.

Misty was in fact conceived as an incompetent who hadn't really gotten anywhere, so her lashing out on Ash non-stop was sort of The Chain of Harm, trying to vent out her own follies onto him. While there are shades of this Inferiority Superiority Complex (eg. how her sisters demean her or her failure to handle Psyduck) she doesn't seem that brought down in the final show, so again she looks a bit like a petty asshole.

The change to being more lighthearted was probably for the better then because having a world and cast full of assholes doesn't really make you wanna root for anyone.

At the same time tho, Shudo clearly intended for this series to be something else than what it ended up being.

Very much so. We've discussed his proposed ending a few times now.

The guy had a very dim view of the Pokemon world...but he also planned for Ash to eventually beat Gary and become the champion, so I've softened a bit on it. At least he was going to let the kid pull off his ultimate victory.

You can easily tell by the time Orange Islands started or we got into Johto a lot of those darker Kanto eps plotlines started disappearing, partly because pokemon became a worldwide phenomenon and Shudo's direction of the series being weakened.

You watch "Tentacool and Tenacruel" from the first season, the whole ep is about Tentacruel/Tentacool destroying a city and buildings, and the old lady and her minions shooting it with machine guns, a bazooka, a tank, etc. And then those male servants in speedos.

All those type of eps gradually disappeared. It's hard to believe there was once a time real handguns or machine guns were shown in the pokemon anime, you'd never see that now.

I feel like the last episode that came kinda near to the Kanto series' cynicism is "A Double Dilemma" in the AG series, where the nut job town that ostracises Ash still does so after he saves them from Team Rocket.

Granted even there it felt more like Some Anvils Need to Be Dropped, as Ash still seemed in the right, he just had to accept he couldn't reach everyone, and sometimes jerks who aren't clear cut villains will continue being jerks. Nearly every episode after that tended to white wash such a premise.
