Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tup] Izrador. You have no idea how tempted I was to mispronounce it as Isildur.

So I just remembered this other book candidate but can't find the book and haven't checked it out since...like a fucking decade. It was from the "canon" sequel to the original Dracula novel, and the villain in question was both Elizabeth Bathory and Jack the Ripper as the same character.

@bobg: My Valentine's Day was the usual. Just me going stag to watch Happy Death Day 2U and re-proposing the Scarlet King.

Solid entry Erazor...and now for Doug...

Who is Darkseid?

Lord of Apokolips and the New God of Evil, Darkseid in Justice League War kicks off the first Post-Flashpoint as the first Big Bad. Now, in Justice League: War, Darkseid seeks to conquer the earth to add it to his Empire...and he does this with a body count. Darkseid has many, many innocent people abducted and forcibly converted into Parademons, killing all they were to make them expendable cannon-fodder and unleahs them upon earth. Darkseid? Rains down fiery death upon the world, seeking to annihilate entire cities and to burn the world so he can reign over what's left. Darkseid is defeated here by the heroes, driven out and thrown back to Apokolips.

Now, in Reign of the Supermen? Darkseid reveals himself a the true mastermind of the major plot behind the Death of Supermen: having been responsible for the destruction of a space shuttle Superman couldn't save, Darkseid recovered the ravaged body of Hank Henshaw, an astronaut who lost his wife in the disaster. Corrupting Henshaw, he helps to nurture his hatred of Superman for failing to save his wife, and hatches a new scheme to take earth: Darkseid is the one who unleashes Doomsday, a walking bioweapon of pure destructiveness on the world to kill tons of people...ending in Superman's death...sorta. Sending Henshaw with new powers ina cyborg body built to resemble Superman, Darkseid has Henshaw begin to...convert people into robotic, lobotomized slaves to lay the groundwork...revealing himself, as Henshaw's tyranny increases, Darkseid is bringing a full on invasion force, when it's revealed Superman is alive and recovering. Henshaw, consumed with hatred for Superman, is willing to go to any length to hurt and kill him.

Darkseid? Prepares a massive boom tube to bring his forces in...planning to wipe out Metropolis and take over the earth. Unfortunately for him, Henshaw refuses to allow anyone else to get one over on him against Superman and ends up destroying a vital piece of Apokolips tech that kills the portal, leaving a furious Darkseid with his invasion plot ruined, as Superman is forced to fight Henshaw and eventually destroy him as well.

Heinousness?

Worst in the new DC films, with being...Darkseid, per usual. The Parademon creation, the massive body count, all the psychological manipulations and so forth.

Mitigating Qualities?

It's Darkseid. Now, in War Darkseid has the deeds but he has zero personality whatsoever. He's big, nasty and yells things. In Reign, Darkseid's more intelligent side comes out, and Tony Todd gives an excellent performance, with a far-reaching plan, a cold sense of humor and much more intelligence and charisma he's finally allowed to showcase.

Conclusion?

And a yes for Doug.

Yes to Darkseid. His War incarnation was Blum, BTW. This is Todd's 5th I think (Darrow, Juma, Fallen, voice of Zoom).

Lighty, is Midnight D&D? It doesn't appear on the franchise's page.

Mmmm....I think so? Fantasy Flight put it out, admittedly, and I've heard conflicting things. From Wiki: "Midnight is a campaign setting for the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, released under the Open Gaming License. It was published by Fantasy Flight Games from 2003 to 2009. "

For those interested, Darkseid ends the film unbeaten, but the heroes? Plan to take the fight to him

Yeah for Darkseid and @ ACW, there is an issue when it still sensationalizes every moment of sadism/jerkassery tangential to their actual crimes and perpetuates the 'need big entry because villains are so epic' mentality that gets irritating.

As I said, if I watch this and see it can be substantively cut down I'm not going to be happy with having to sit through a work because the OP couldn't be bothered to trim it down themselves. Like, does it not set off some red flags that their entry is longer than FMA!Dante, Thor!Hela and approaching that of Father?

[down] Eh, being fair to Hela, while she's not as cool as the Grandmaster her schemes are pretty nasty.

And yet, this has nothing. It's...odd.

Also, with Darkseid...how the hell is Blum reduced to a GDV?

[up] Mmm, that's fair (well, the first 2; I can understand it being longer than Hela).

It's from the original Young Justice comic, when Darkseid meets Secret, who introduces him as her new friend "Mr. Doug Side."

You know... I've been thinking if we need to use separate version instead and spoil Ijima's name. That way, I wont be trim the writeup and keep Mistleteinn's writeup as it is. Is it okay with you ACW? I mean, Ijima's separated writeup is mostly at the 95 words so I have no issue there.

Also yes to the candidates I missed.

@ACW alrite... I'll pull the merged version and use my writeup and heres the one in question:

  • The aforementioned Ryota Ijima is a charismatic teacher and guidance-counselor at Yumeji's Highschool. However, he reveals himself to be something sinister. In the last parts of the episode, he was revealed to conspire with the evil Dream Demon, Mistleteinn Treesea, to ruin the dreams of other students by killing the dream demons, taking a sadistic relish from all of it. He then reveals his true nature towards one of his students by repeatedly kicking her head and during the final confrontation, he then spitefully beats Yumeji after the other two heroes failed to kill Mistleteinn.

I prefer this one to be spoiled heavily in the YMMV page unlike Mistleteinn.
