Mainly for a session of Shadowrun's background music, atmospheric stuff, y'know?

The gist of it is that I'm looking for creepy songs that give off a half empty feel. Bonus points if they play on or remix songs that a child may have found comforting, or that has children vaguely heard in the background.

Right now I've got some Zelda tracks and "It's a Small World" backwards, any suggestions?

Vandal my user page if ya don't mind.

Hmmmmm... I remember that Shadow Of The Colossus had some nice themes; the last boss theme is rather ominous but also has that creepy, kinda empty, atmosphere.

Other cool unnerving themes from the same game are:

Godspeed You! Black Emperor's "Static". There are versions on YouTube, but the track is cut into pieces since it's about 23 minutes long.

The ICO soundtrack is also very atmospheric and empty-sounding, but not really oppressive.

The Cave Story Remix Project features a few dark tracks, specifically "12. Shoddy Loch", "14. Scrap Metal", and "17. Combination Lock".

Almost anything by Sixteen Horsepower or Woven Hand. A sampling:

Godspeed You! Black Emperor

Curse you and your preemptive strikes.

Uh, let's see. Tarentel's "Ghosty Head" or "Death in the Mind of the Living."
Radiohead's "Treefingers," "How To Disappear Completely," or "Street Spirit (Fade Out)."
Stars of the Lid's "Austin Texas Mental Hospital, Part 2," "Articulate Silences, Part 2," or "Tippy's Demise."

Parts of Delirium Cordia by Fantomas could work, I think, but parts of it is a bit too intense for that kind of usage, plus it's all in one long track, so I guess it's a little bit unwieldy. Slug Bait by Throbbing Gristle is shorter, well, seven minutes, but fits the bill, I'd say.

Aphex Twin, SAW Vol. II. More than two hours of redundant and hypnotic music. Have fun.

Contributing to the industrial trend here, Coil are pretty creepy. I only listened to the Love's Secret Domain album, but I guess it's a pretty good starting point.

From Alien Vs Predator's soundtrack come these three pieces, heavy on ambiance and ominousness. Maybe a bit minimalist, though.

The Terra Tower or Tower of Geddon tracks from Chrono Cross might work, and I've always liked Eternal Darkness' "Ashes to Ashes" too. Oh, and "Whark Room" from Riven.

And... well, there used to be a Silent Hill 4 remix called "16121," done by a chap named Sefiros and hosted on VGMix. I thought it was lost when the site was killed, but it looks like some Russian fansite has it for download.

Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town

This song is perhaps one of the most horrifying things on the planet. You have to pay attention to the lyrics and give it just a little thought but…man…especially the ending…

I do NOT want to be kept up by the same things that keep Kenny Rogers up at night.

Here's a bonus: Leonard Nimoy singing the same song.

David Lynch's movies have a lot of these, but my personal favorite is Ghost of Love from Inland Empire:

Super-creepy sorta ambient stuff that gives a feeling of emptiness?

Set Fire to Flames is a GSY!BE off-shoot that does some suitable stuff.

Lustmord is a group that does very dark ambient. A lot harsher, with a lot of cavernous echoing and deep rumbles.

You've lost. You're the Bomb Squad after the bomb's gone off. I'm the blast ongoing.
