Go To

This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

I understand. It was not my intention to appear to have a negativity bias; it is indeed only fair to require sources for statements even if the entry is neutral or positive.

I apologize again, and hope that I can continue to show that I'm willing to abide by policy.

Good day.

I have been suspended for several days now due to being involved in an Edit War.

I wanted to know where I'm wrong.

Fighteer: Well, in that case, I suppose the indentation would look something like this:

  • BIONICLE
    • Makuta Teridax seemed to have a habit of creating prototypes that were much stronger than the mass-produced versions that'd come later, though in his case that was usually because his creations tended to be too intelligent or ambitious to serve his goals, so he'd scale them back in power and intelligence to ensure they wouldn't become a threat. Also, he made them with limited lifespans to ensure they wouldn't remain a thorn in his side for too long even if he didn't bother with killing them.
    • One of Makuta's creations, the Karzahni, was this to its successor, the Morbuzakh. It had all the Morbuzakh's abilities (incredible strength, complete control of its vegetation, capable of intelligent thought and speaking), plus it lacked the need to feed off of fire and heat (since it survived just fine in the sun-less darkness of the tunnels between Metru Nui and Mata Nui) and possessed immunity to ice and cold (casually shattering a layer of ice over its form that would have crippled its successor for a time). However, it was far too ambitious and intelligent to be content with Makuta's plans for it and rebelled, so he banished it and made the Morbuzakh with the mentioned flaws (plus being less intelligent) so it would serve him alone. The Karzahni did not like that in the slightest and started planning Teridax's downfall and death.

[up] That is correct indentation. Please heed our indentation rules, and you'll do fine.

Suspension released.

It's been a few years since my editing suspension, and I'd like to help provide contributions again.

May I please have access to editing privileges once more?

You've been wikibanned four times, at least two of those for Edit War infractions. I'm not sure why you think we're likely to let you edit again.

I'd have to look into the specifics of those, because it's been quite some time. I mean, I know by now that edit warring is best kept to the forums. My last infraction was due to me phrasing my feelings on a YMMV page too strongly, which I've apologized for.

At any rate, I now know to discuss editing conflicts in forums, so I'd appreciate another chance to provide updates. There are quotes on pages that are wrong that's driving me up the wall, and I'd like to be able to fix them, and would appreciate another chance seeing how it's been years since my last infraction.

Not to mention, when I try to make an edit, I'm provided with the following passage:

"Sorry, your editing privilege has been suspended. Don't worry, this is not a punishment."

Is that not the case?

I was curious what my previous suspensions were for, so I did a little digging and this is what I found.

The first time was for swapping out an image without taking it to IP. This was I think around 2013, when I didn't know the policy on this sort of thing. Once I was informed, I didn't change any other images without taking it to IP.

The second time was I think early 2014. due to an edit war with captions on some of the Fire Emblem pages. I wasn't aware of any way of discussing captions outside of edit reasons, which resulted in the edit war.

The third was mid-2014 for me going through and updating links to that they wouldn't require redirects. This was a simple matter of me not knowing the rulings on spellings and redirects.

The last one was late 2015 due to me making a sour comment on a YMMV page; I figured all opinions mattered on YMMV pages, which apparently wasn't the case, so I apologized for that.

The second one was an edit war thing, and you can make the argument that the last was also an edit war issue (though the reasoning was different than just from multiple edits, it was me making a stupid remark). I understand that I've undergone multiple strikes, but at the same time I'm stated to be under a suspension. And if there's no timeout on these sorts of things, then I fail to see how it's a suspension.

If I screw up again and repeat one of my mistakes, perma-ban me, that's fine. But these have been a series of different mistakes I made, none of which were catastrophic, and I think it's fair to say I've had time to simmer on things.

It's been two years. Cut me some slack.

[up] Most people get a permanent ban after three strikes, unless they're really minor. You've had four non-trivial strikes, and plenty of warnings. You are free to interpret this however you want; from our point of view, there's no reason to believe you wouldn't violate the rules again, and there's no value in putting other tropers through the hassle of reporting you.

If you really want to make this into some kind of vendetta that we have against you, personally, then consider that we've let you keep your forum privileges and your ability to read the wiki, if not edit. There are worse things we can do (and have done). If you want to become the kind of pain in the ass that we have to serially ban, it's no skin off our nose: we'll just add you to the bounce-on-sight list. If not, you'd do well to accept the situation.

Then at least someone fix the quote on The Not-So-Harmless Punishment.

The first line Fry says is "What if I refuse?"

It's driving me nuts that I can't make small fixes like this.

~Utopian Ratite: Alright. I've released your suspension.

~Biznizz: You get a third chance (your previous suspension had to do with an apparent vendetta against another troper). There will not be any more.

Pope: We get that all the time. "I'll just make minor fixes." The thing is: by violating our rules, you also abrogate the right to do that. You're not the only one who can clean stuff up.

Also you are in no position to be demanding edits from us. Especially since that's also against the rules.

  • Do not deliver Messages or Edits from someone who is banned.
    • If you're banned from participating in something - Wiki editing, posting in the Fora, etc - it means you're not allowed to do that thing. If someone asks you to post something in a subforum in which they're not allowed to post, do not deliver their message. Same with Wiki edits from someone who is banned from editing the Wiki; that is just ban evasion by proxy.
    • Please don't engage with a Troper who you know is banned under another handle
    • Exception: If a user is suspended for poor grammar or editing style, they may post edits they wish to make in the "Get Help with English" and "Is this an example?" threads. Once those edits are corrected, other tropers may make them on the suspended troper's behalf.

It doesn't matter what the circumstances are. If you're banned for something other than grammar issues you do not get to ask people to edit for you. This is non-negotiable.

I suppose I've been forum banned for posting my opinions about Zelda's decline again.

Oh well, if people don't like that, I'll completely stop doing that.

I'll just need two weeks to cool down.

Edit: Sorry, I misread your file.

If Zelda is going to be a trigger for you no matter how many times you get thumped and/or suspended for it, then there most definitely will not be any more chances. We'd have to be idiots to take you at your word this time around.

If you feel that's the only way to stop me, then I can't really argue with that.

Got edit suspended for some reason and I'm really not sure why. I've checked What to Do If You Are Suspended, and as far as I know, I haven't violated any of the criteria listed. Any way anyone could clear things up for me? If so, thanks.

I thought that it would be a good idea to turn the links into overly literal translations, sort of like the folders over at Translation Train Wreck. At first I was just going to Self-Demonstrating Article-ify the Laconic page, but I guess I kinda went overboard with that, then.

~Fighteer (I apologize; I genuinely can't figure out how to link your name in a post, and "the Show Markup Help" button doesn't do anything in my browser (Safari on OS X 10.11)):

Of course. I wasn't begging forgiveness because I didn't understand the rules, I was taking responsibility for having broken them in foolish ignorance and promising to be more careful and knowledgable of the rules in the future. As a user it's my responsibility to understand the rules and guidelines in place and to adhere to them, and I failed; I know better now.
