This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.
If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.
The Forum Rules apply here.
Don'ts
- Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
- Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
- Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
- Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
- Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

From what I'm seeing now, it's just my grammar that needs work. I'll start using Grammarly from now on. And yes that new edit did flow better.
Now the next one is "zero-context examples". I'm not sure what that means, but I have at least tried describing the songs in Awesome Music. Like what it's lyrics are about and what it sounds like. Not sure if this has anything to do with grammar, but I could be wrong. What's an example of the proper way of describing something in Awesome Music?
Hello. I have made my appeal last page but to keep it short. I would like to sincerely apologize for my mistake for edit-warring and rudeness in the Trope Pantheons project. As a long time-contributor, it was immature of me to lash out against other users and I will not repeat those mistakes again.
I would like to be permitted to join the Pantheons project once again, and to those reading my post, I am sorry for what I did. I am willing to take a 3-day suspension to rethink my actions, so as long as am still allowed to join. Thank you.

I swear Loid, you can't draw worth shit!Hello! I just want to remind you that I’m still suspended? Can someone please fix that? Thank you!
Hello? I’ve been suspended for 5 days and no one has said anything. Can someone respond please?
I can’t answer the question because I never had or gave additional outlines. I don’t know what you are talking about. I feel there is confusion being brought here. I just want my suspension lifted.
Checked the folder. Get it now. Might check up on the TLP Adoption Drive next time I want to launch a page of my own, as opposed to drafts currently in development and likely a few days before reaching a launch consensus.
"Yeah yeah no, you can't change the way you are." - CharizardMay I edit again? I didn’t realize what I was doing wrong.
Hello. I'm suddenly suspended from doing any edits and I don't know what the reason is.
Please don't respond to other ban appeals on this thread as the pinned post on top of the page says.
Also, these responses take time and we usually have to respond to multiple at once. We intend to respond to all of you soon.

Macron's notesPlease un-suspend me
Hi there! I made my tvtropes account a day or so ago to create a page for some of my original work. I was working on the page last night and then came online today to see I'd been suspended. I looked through the common reasons for suspensions, but I have no idea what caused mine. Could someone please explain what went wrong and how I can avoid it in the future? Thanks!
Edit: I think I've figured out the problem. Last night I was editing my new page with the help of my friend (darkdoombob) who is also new to editing here. As we were messing with the syntax for the page, there were multiple times where we were swapping back and forth editing. I think it's possible that it was flagged as an editing war, because he is also suspended. If this is why we were suspended, we'll make sure to only have one of us working on the page for subsequent editing sessions!

I was suspended from editing a page and am not sure why.
Apologies, but has my appeal here been overlooked? It's been a few days, and my post did get pagebottomed, so I figured I'd bring it to your attention; if not, then again, my apologies.
clearly things are going well. Apologies for the delay, everyone!
If we missed you in today's posts, please re-appeal.
If we missed you in today's posts, please re-appeal.
~Mahoxy — Although there's generally a preference to remove ZCE by adding comment tags instead of outright deletion, many of the examples that you deleted didn't fall under your reasoning (Weblinks Are Not Examples). In fact, a tendency to poorly provide reasoning for your edits (three notifiers) is the real reason behind your suspension.
Yes, please check over Edit Reasons and Why You Should Use Them and then get back to us.
~Black Yakuzu 94 — That's fine. We can wait until you return, so long as you remember to use the proper channels.
None of this matters to your appeal. None of it is news to the moderation. We want you to stop focusing on your draft and pay attention to the larger issue that we are trying to resolve.
We're glad to hear that you understand the distinction. The "archetype" and "significant meaning" were removed from this quote because they're redundant to "send a message". We need to work some more on this concept before we move on.
What is the meaning inherent to Mortal Wound Reveal? Why isn't it just "character is wounded and will die"?
What is the meaning inherent to Translation by Volume? What separates it from the concept that people speak louder when asked to repeat information?
What is the meaning inherent to The Hilarious Table? What separates that concept from "a group of people laughing"?
~cwallace135 — We are waiting for you to answer our question
For ease of reading, the policy is here.~surname4u — Bad grammar is definitely a factor, although Grammarly and similar programs won't be much help due to the wiki's writing style (pseudocode and markup in the examples).
Failure to properly identify context is the other factor that we would say caused editors to send you Word Cruft notifiers. To answer your question, let's visit AwesomeMusic.R 3 HAB and here is a copy of four fixed examples for comparison:
* "Party Hard" was made during the prime time of the scene. Especially with the melody line being hard to forget. This one is a bumping festival anthem.
* "Won't Stop Rocking" really hits hard. The kick drums are deeper here, and the occasional reverb vocals add an emotional undertone to it.
%%* "Call Me" featuring Gary Ponte and Timmy Trumpet is a cover the Blondie song, so you know this already hits hard.
%%Why? This is zero-context as written.
%%* "All Around the World (La La La)" is an epic cover of the same song by A Touch of Class.
%%What's epic about it? This is zero-context as written.
"Party Hard" and "Won't Stop Rocking" both describe how the audience feels, along with details on why. "melody line being hard to forget" and "occasional reverb vocals add an emotional undertone" reinforces the "bumping festival anthem" and "really hits hard". In contrast, the other two songs are called "hits hard" and "an epic cover", without explaining either one. Why is the song awesome?
~Gojiboy 2000 — In order to get your suspension lifted, you will first have to read Edit War. We will know that you have done so after you have correctly answered our question about the policy. What methods are recommended to resolve an editing conflict?
~ACW — Since we issued this suspension primarily to have this conversation with you, that's all! We want you to be aware of the problem, and hope that you will take advantage of this oppourtunity to expand your focus. Your workshop privileges have been returned.
~Hamana Hamana Hamana — You are correct, except for the part where we do timed suspensions. Sometimes we'll try it out as a corrective measure, but usually suspensions only last long enough to discuss the reason why and to establish that whatever mistake that caused it won't happen again.
Looking over some of your conversations, we're forced to agree that your main problem is gatekeeping. You have a specific vision of the trope pantheon project and you have trouble expressing yourself politely when it comes to that. Your thumps are of the same nature, and we find it very upsetting that someone is being so unpleasant to other editors/posters, especially in an area which is intended to be Just for Fun.
We are returning your query privileges, and we want to see you exploring other areas of the website aside from the Trope Pantheons project before we are willing to entertain returning your editing privileges or forum games access. This is not timed because we expect to see decent progress in this area before we start discussing your return to editing in general.
~Thanos Quack — The TLP adoption drive usually mentions drafts that need some love and care before launching, too, but otherwise your response has been satisfactory. Your suspension is released.

Link to TRS threads in project mode here.~frankywifeey274 — Welcome to the Edit Bans and Suspensions thread! Yes, your suspension is primarily because you violated our rules on Edit Warring. After reading the policy, please explain when an edit war begins.
After we have resolved that issue to our mutual satisfaction (meaning that you understand and we believe that you understand the rules), we will discuss Speculative Troping.
~Puterboy 1 — Welcome to the Edit Bans and Suspensions thread!
Your suspension is because you have seven notifiers for Zero-Context Example, yet you have persistently added more ZCE/PCE entries to articles. What's up with that? Why are you still struggling with it?
~notShemp — Welcome to the Edit Bans and Suspensions thread! You were suspended because you've violated our policy on About Images and Copyright. You were notified about the problem at the beginning of the year, yet you persisted in pasting other people's work on our wiki without giving proper attribution. Do you remember the discussion that we are talking about?
~Creator 4984 — Welcome to the Edit Bans and Suspensions thread! You were suspended because of persistent Zero-Context Example problems. You may only edit occasionally, but you've been around for over ten years. We'd expect that you would've picked up the rules by now.
~leafgilly and ~darkdoombob — No, it wasn't exactly an Edit War. The situation is closer to an unusual case of mutual vandalism.
To start with, darkdoombob, you created an article for a work named Changeling of the Guard at the name of Streetlight Pursuit. Work names should be used to create article names, with the exception of using a disambiguation for works that share a name. Writing up a description for "Work A" under "Title B" is simply unacceptable. The unexplained removal of the trope list is also concerning. You should read Edit Reasons and Why You Should Use Them.
Next, leafgilly, you completely rewrote the Streetlight Pursuit article to be about your work. That's vandalism because it is essentially blanking one page and replacing it with a completely different one.
We can only take your (plural) word for being friends. We don't know what, if any, conversations that you're having about your wiki activity away from the wiki. You are not the only editors on the wiki, it isn't your private playground. We expect your edits to be transparent to anyone else that come across the pages that either one of you creates.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.
The actual changeling of the guard page still exists and is unchanged - https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Fanfic/TheChangelingOfTheGuard. I copied the text of the page into the streetlight pursuit page, which I had just created -https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Fanfic/StreetlightPursuit - to use as a template and formatting guide. I deleted the trope list because it was the tropes of Changeling of the Guard, not the work we were building a page for. When we made changes to the page, it did not affect the original Changeling of the Guard page. I apologize, I did not realize that it would be page vandalism and I will not do it again.

Alright, that being said, how exactly can I contribute per say in the query privileges? I have no interest on the Media/Real-ish forums and my editing function has been revoked for the time being. I suppose the Wiki and Forums sub-area is the closest I can contribute on.
I swear Loid, you can't draw worth shit!Agreed with everything darkdoombob says. We are new to the site and didn’t consider that duplicating and completely rewriting existing text could be interpreted as vandalism. Apologies for violating policy, and I’ll make sure to leave edit reasons on my future page updates.
I remember the discussion. I never intended to copy it permanently, it was supposed to be temporary until I get more context. I'm the one who usually creates the recap pages for The Great North, and I copy the synopsis for the upcoming episodes, but I try to put them in my own words the best I can and I update the synopsis of the episode after I watched the episode once I get more context about it. Unfortunately, I'll been neglectful to update the summaries in the recap pages because I was focusing on other projects and I just forgot. I fully understand that it's my fault for not updating the recap page after the episode airs and for not putting more effort into trying to put the synopsis in my own words.
Edit: And I apologize for not being responsible for keeping up with the information I put out.
Edited by notShemp on Nov 18th 2022 at 1:42:40 AM
I was suspended because I got involved in an edit war, which means that I made posts that didn’t line up with the tropes that I was posting about. Someone fixed it for me though. In the future I should be more weary of how a work fits into a trope, and shouldn’t just blindly put a work in because I think it is part of the trope. I’m sorry. Is there a way to lift my suspension?
An edit war occurs when one goes over someone else’s edit of a page quickly usually over a difference in ideas.
Speculative troping is when one presents their own theories as tropes on a page.
I’ll refrain from both in the future.
Edited by frankywifeey274 on Nov 18th 2022 at 6:35:17 AM
You determine the start of an edit war you notice that two or more people continue to edit over a trope since they can’t seem to agree on something. I in particular was suspended because I kept editing in things that other people didn’t agree with. I hope that answers your question.
I didn’t realize they were zero context examples. May I edit again so I can do better?
Sorry for the wait everyone.
~Stewie Griffin 34 -_- Nobody is trying to get rid of you. Your editing and posting permissions remain, the only action that we've taken is to prevent you from sending/reading private messages. We didn't like the idea as we can tell that you've sent out more notifiers than you've received, which made us disappointed in your ability to gage the social situation and respond appropriately.
You are welcome to continue editing and posting.
~The Goddess Is Dead
It may surprise you to know, but intentionality isn't a factor that enters into handling an Edit War dispute. If it was a factor, then we'd have to somehow mind-read the person and Charles Xavier continues to refuse our calls. Without mindreading as a possibility, we'd have to accept the editor at their word. They didn't know they were breaking the rules.
However, as you already pointed out, it is your responsibility to be aware of what the rules are and to edit responsibly. It doesn't matter if the only time anyone edit wars was a mistake, you are supposed to learn from them and avoid them in the future.
~surname4u — That's fine; Word Cruft can take a variety of appearances, but they're all essentially a violation of clear and concise writing. This example was added by you, saying
Do you see how the second version flows more smoothly than the first? The first example has an awkward sentence that is also bad grammar; "The song "Beer in the Bar" by Basshunter." doesn't contain a predicate. What is the song doing? Every sentence has a noun and an action that the subject takes. By eliminating the extra words, the example becomes clearer.
~D Jones 662 — Correct; your suspension is released.
~mangamanic
~Thanos Quack
The Draft Creator isn't the only one allowed to launch the trope. To find the answer to that, you'll want to read the folder titled "The Adoption Option". A draft sponsor isn't necessarily the draft creator. You could certainly become a sponsor without creating the initial draft, so the code has to allow you to launch the draft, even if you aren't the original creator.
~Gojiboy2000
~gamerzillasaurusrex2000 — Welcome to the Edit Banned and/or Suspended thread.
Your suspension is primarily because of issues with following the Example Indentation in Trope Lists. You've received three separate messages about it, spread out over several days. Have you read the policy yet?
~Randal Drake Good, I'll release your suspension.
