This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

Hello, I've been banned for a month and a half, and I want to be able to edit again. I know some articles can get testy, and many people can be guilty of getting heated in them, but I'm going to try not to be too sharply sarcastic in articles especially addressing broad subjects that might not be directly on the same subject as the article brings up. I know it's not necessary or desirable in articles. I want another chance to be able to contribute here.

@TropesofTV: Okay. Suspension released, but remember your conditions. No editing unless you use the Example Help thread.

@Doomsday524: Well now, let's take a look at this. You seem to enjoy popping into threads and articles and making some really obnoxious posts/edits, particularly of a political nature. And before you accuse us of partisanship, please note that we'd be just as hard on someone editing an article on, say, Rush Limbaugh, to call him a fat, slimy retard. We have a thing called the Rule Of Cautious Editing Judgement, and it applies to the forums as well. The rule can be summarized as: don't pick fights.

If you see an article that seems to be slanted overly towards a particular side or is spiteful or otherwise objectionable, you may ask for assistance in Ask The Tropers or here on the forums.

What we will not tolerate is more of those obnoxious posts and/or edits. There will not be another chance. Is that clear?

Yes, and then it tells you to come here to discuss the reasons. But you're familiar with this process, right secretist? And please do us the favor of not wasting our time with denials.

You have a friend who also lives or lived near Gary, Indiana, and was banned a month or so before you created your account. This friend was also in the habit of going to OTC and copy/pasting huge blocks of text from Wikipedia and ignoring attempts by people to debate his arguments. This friend was a strong devotee of Ayn Rand and Mises, plus a Japanophile.

You see, when we issue a ban to an account, that means that you don't get to come back on a different one and pretend you're someone else. Now, it's certainly our fault in a sense for not catching you sooner. Had you followed the proper appeals process, as noted under What to Do If You Are Suspended, we might have been able to work things out. As it stands, by ban evading and pretending that you are not, you've pretty much burned that bridge. And FYI, that means no forum posting, no PM's, no wiki editing, nothing.

I wanted to get your attention so I could deliver the message. But I suppose I'm curious to hear if you have some novel explanation for this massive string of similarities.

You know, I'm not sure which worries me more: that there's a single obsessive IUN student ban evading and lying about it, or that IUN is host to an Objectivist Anime Lovers club, multiple members of which decided to go on TV Tropes and debate politics by copying and pasting from Wikipedia.

Can you appreciate why this is a problem for us, though?

And the posting style consisting of strings of links that are only-somewhat related to the subject, the cut-and-pastes of wall o' text from other sites, the Randian and Misesian views, and the marked tendency to ignore responses from other posters rather than addressing them? I suppose those are all incredibly common in Gary, as well?

I never ignored any posts. I responded to them, but did get derailed by countering the counter points to defend the points indirectly rather than direclty defending the points. Any Archive Binge of for example "Tipping in Restaurants" will show I didn't ignore any points. Actually, various people ignored the ethical angle ie people just assuning utilitarianism is the only ethical theory ever. Also, bad use of grammar needed responses as well, but it did border on Grammar Nazi. People do not know the difference between active tense and passive tense, and no just because choosing is always active doesn't make whatever you choose to do active as well. Also, you can allaow things to be chosen rather than actually choose as well.

Also, people not defining what they mean by fairness. I showed that fairness can have many meanings. For example Rawlsina versus Nozickian fairness.

Also, I took Philosophy 140, Introduction to Ethics, so I am familiar with utilitarianism. The problem could be that professors here tend to be hardcore Kantians. In the cafeteria, once, two professors argued both for and against affirmative action based solely on A Groundwork on the Metaphysics of Morals by Immanuel Kant. So yes, I'm familiar with all the form of consequentialism and all possible criticisms thereof.

...

Okay.

So, you passively evade our accusations of ban evasion and then dump that paragraph of mangled English on us (plus, you edited in a cute little rant demonstrating your ability to copy and paste from a philosophy syllabus). You know, even if you aren't secretist despite the 99.9% similarity, I'm not sure we want a person on the wiki who demonstrates this sort of inability to be apposite or, indeed, coherent.

I'm going to give you a few hours to read this reply and then elevate your ban to full. I do not advise trying to make a new account to post or edit, as there will not be a discussion next time.

As a piece of purely personal advice, it's one thing to be in college and be exposed to all these elements of philosophy, sociology, and economics for the first time. It's quite another to understand those things well enough to hold an actual debate over them. You clearly lack the latter. If I were you, I'd go back and work a bit harder at the real-life applications of the things you are studying.

Is it possible to get an answer on what I wroted february 2nd? Yes, I know by english could be better, but whit a suspension I can't even correct it myself. Translating pages into danish as I suggested is also out of the question.

I fail to see what I did wrong. I answered the questions I responded to. Other people on this site have been sarcastic or comical in their answers. Why can't I? I mean, if you think I should "format it less like a discussion thread", then sure, I can try and do that.

This wiki has a policy about Conversation In The Main Page — summed up, we are a wiki, not a forum. The articles are not for you to hold a conversation with other tropers. The fact that other people may do it is not an excuse to do it yourself. In fact, we suspend people who we identify as habitual natterers in order to inform them of this policy so they will stop, and ideally, help with the cleanup effort.

Some articles have less formal rules: Headscratchers and WMG, for example, are places that really should be in a discussion format, but it's something we haven't gotten to yet. However, Fridge, Trivia, Wallbangers, Awesome, and similar places are subject to the same rules about natter as the main articles.

Many tropers respond to warnings with acceptance of the rules. When that doesn't happen, we remove your editing rights so we can talk it over.

So, please read up on How To Write An Example and indicate your understanding and acceptance of those rules.

This is the third time we've had to address behavior issues with you on the wiki, Ichigo Montoya. First, you were deleting YMMV entries that you disagreed with. Then you did it again three days later. Now you're undoing our efforts to fix Example Indentation.

We have a policy that we don't give many third chances. This would be a fourth. That's pretty much a wrap as far as we're concerned. "Fool us twice" and all that.

If we release your suspension, what's the next incident going to be?
